What type of Genre is ‘We love pop’?
•We love Pop magazine is a magazine which falls into the music category
“pop music”. I have therefore researched this to this conclusion, I have
analysed the colour scheme, such as the colour scheme mainly consists of
pinks, blues and other bright colours in order for them to stand out, the
choice of colour scheme also reflects on the type of readers We Love Pop
is aimed at. The choice of colour scheme also reflects on the type of music
and artists which are featured in the magazine issues, for example the
colours are bright, fun and cheerful, therefore this reflects on the cheerful,
fun, pop music which is featured in the magazine issues.
Target audience
•When looking at the main images of We Love Pop magazine, their target
audience is mainly teenage girls aged 13-18 (Hartley) this is because it
includes free gifts which are generally targeted at young girls, such as they
include things like make up, stickers and sweets, which therefore could
affect if they buy the magazine or not. Happy facial expressions from
artists on the cover as result of this I would make the audience to also feel
happy due to the fact that most of the artists are looking at the reader
allowing them to feel connected and brings a light-hearted feel to the
magazine.
•When it comes to We love Pops would fit into the socio-economic group
of E, and D in the demographics table, as We love Pops target audience is
teenage girls ages 13-15 they are unlikely to have a job, as they still would
be in education therefore this is beneficial to them as We love Pops
magazine is priced too high so therefore they will be able to afford it.
• We love Pops target audience would fit into the category on the
physiographic chart of “Aspires” this is because they tend to be
orientated to image and appearance persona and fashion. Attractive
packaging more important then contents. As well as this it this is normally
found is younger people.
•According to Maslow the audience would be ‘survivors’ they like having
the routine of knowing when the magazine comes out – which I have
shown evidence of in a screenshot. They would also be ‘survioirs’ because
they would get into the regular routine of the magazine, and would may
get excited when a new one comes out as it means they are likely to get a
free gift inside.

5. Purpose and Meaning
The main purpose of We love Pop magazine is to
provide fun, facts and information about teenage
girls favourite singers/groups. They also provide
small posters of popular artists inside making girls
want to buy the magazine more.
The meaning of the magazine is for teenage girls to
have fun reading it, this is conveyed by the fun
bright colours used on the front cover. As a result of
using bright fun colours like pink, this is going to
make the audience by the magazine again.
We love Pop strapline denotes “Don’t bore us, get
to the chorus". The connotations of the strapline of
“chorus” are that it relates to the music magazine,
using the term “bore us” could connote that the
magazine would be boring, and this could also
connotes attitude, within the strapline, and it gets
to the point.

The style of each magazine is full with bright, girly colours. By them doing
this it is getting the readers to by the magazine more often. Each magazine
has large bright text, which would engaged the reader to be drawn to them
first.

out against the pictures and headlines in
the magazine. By including this is gives
an insight of what's inside the magazine
to the reader.

in girly bubbly font
with a love heart in
the masthead which
shortens the name of
the magazine. By using
a pink love heart for
the masthead draws
the young readers in
more as a pink love
heart is mainly
associated with young
girls.

which is quite expensive
and suggests it is aimed
at a young audience who
still get their working
parents to buy the

All the smaller images are of Teen-Celebes or artists related to
pop. This suggests that ‘Top of the Pops’ is a pop magazine. By using
lots of imagery on the page suggests that the target audience is
quite young, as young people like to see a lot of visual images to
stay entertained.

8. Contents Analysis-”We love pop”.
Here is a contents page for We love Pop,
here for the title they have used “We love
this..” instead of “contents” I think that
they have used this catching slogan,
instead of “contents” to catch the readers
eye in hope that they will read on into the
magazine.
This contents has the artists One Direction
on the cover to encourage fans to read
into the magazine, as it is more than likely
to contain a page on One Direction. There
are also quotes directly from the group,
which would interests fans, while also
include a number of pictures.
Furthermore, the list of where things are
have been highlighted in Gold/orange to fit
with the same colors from the pull quotes
next to the image of One Direction. Doing
this makes them stand out, and catches
the eye of the reader. Against the gold
numbering they have used black font,
which pops against the gold and makes it
look neat and sleek.

magazine, having this allows the company of the magazine know how many issues they have
relased but also means for the readers in this case young girls, they are able to keep up to
date with each issue they have or haven't got. Humour is used throughout the magazine,
which makes it more interesting for the specific target audience, by including humour it
makes the reader feel more involved, they also include images, to invite the reader in more
as bright pictures are a big attraction for young teenagers.

• The denotation of the house style is pink and black-
which together connote fun and summery feel to the
magazine This relates the winter edition of the
magazine as it’s an November to December issue. By
using a lot of pink on the cover, immediately suggest
the target audience is young, girls. The fonts used
throughout the page are bubbly and has a lot of
flicks in them, suggesting the target audience is for a
females. Main image- The main image is of a pop boy
band, One Direction which suggests the magazine is
aimed at a pop music genre.

The first things is to set a date when the magazine is going to be published. By this is when the
magazine will be released to the public. Once this date has been finalized the publishing
companies would have to work out a schedule therefore from working out the schedule they will
have to make sure that they stick to this deadline in order for the magazine to get completed and
published in time.
Managing the schedule-
This is the most important step as the publishing company need to make sure that they time
themselves well and that they stick to the time schedule in order to be successful with their
magazine. The publishing company should give themselves enough time in case anything goes
wrong so that they can fix their mistakes.
Editorial and budgetary decision-
This next step happens within the production process of the magazine. By this the editorial
decisions involve coming up with what topic will be covered in the issue of the magazine, within
this as well the team talk about various content that will make up the main content of the

This is the most important process as this determines what is in the magazine and without this
there would be a magazine. The are two main ways in which content can me gathered and by this
is through in house staff writers that are ordered to write on topics that are specific to the
magazine, during this stage the artwork in the magazine and graphics are worked on. The artwork
is over viewed as the illustrations and pictures that are going to be put into the magazine.
Sub-editing-
Sub-editing focuses on one major thing, which is the quality control. If the publishing company is
big enough then they are able to have a sub-editor, if there is no sub-editor then the main editor
will do this job which involves important things like;
•Checking of the accuracy of all facts and information in the article.
•Making sure that the words are spelt properly.
•Making sure that the grammar and punctuation are use correctly.
•Making sure that all the articles follow the house style throughout.

Page layout-
In large publishing companies there are teams responsible for the pay layout. Their job is to work
on the page layout, and that they come up together with ideas in order to make the magazine. In
working on the magazine they use a programme in order to work on the layout called Desk-top
publishing programs such as InDesign or PageMaker.
Proofreading-
Once the page layout stage is done, the next stage is proofreading, by this the editorial
department will print out a hardcopy of the magazine for reading through it and to find anything
which may be incorrect. By printing a hardcopy it is a lot easier to proofread rather than a soft-
copy. Any mistakes which are spotted are easily corrected on the DTP file, the editorial team
keeps proof-reading until they member is happy with the magazines content.

printing the company prints the hundreds or thousands of copies requested by the publishing
company, the publishing company then gets sent these copies which then get proof-read again by

18. Front cover analysis
• Here is a front cover analysis, by using pink and
white colour scheme, We love Pop is really
appealing to their target audience of young
teenage girls. On the front cover it features a boy
band “One Direction” on the cover to attract fans.
You can also see other famous singers at the
bottom such as “Katy Perry "whose fans could be
interested with this. The magazine have used
straplines and boxes to tell potential customers
what’s inside to attract attention and the way
they’ve done everything looks professional and
stylish. The masthead is easily recognisable with it
being on a pink background in white writing and is
aesthetically pleasing.
• This magazine is specifically targeted at teenage
girls as the colours used are feminine but also the
main artists on the cover are male which attracts
female fans who have a crush rather than a male
fan. The cover also has many cover lines which
grab attention as they appear to be quite
interesting but they also stand out too.

19. House colours- By using house colours
such as blue, purple pink and white,
convey how this magazine is targeted at
the younger generation as well as being
aimed at mainly girls. By having all the
house colours as blue, purple and pink
don’t make them clash against the
artists on the page as them, themselves
are wearing similar clothes to the
colours in the title. By doing this it gives
a very grown up feel to the magazine as
it could be seen as a child-like magazine
to other/older people. Although this
contrasts against the bright cover as
people see the cover fist and could
expect it do be like that inside the
magazine.
Puff promotion -The use of puff promotion in this DPS conveys
how it can persuade readers to read the magazine as they could
be shown a puff promotion reading ‘free gift’ for example. In this
cover in the right hand corner it shows a picture of an iPhone
reading next to it ‘blip it now’ which connotes how fans of the
band are able to Photoshop themselves into a picture with their
favourite member from the band. This could be exciting to some
readers as they may not get a chance to meet them personally
although it adds to the effect of it and that it seems real that
they have met them.

as this it creates a simplysisity and
balances out the businesses.

interesting and funny which would catch
the readers eye and invite them to read

• This magazine is by we love pop magazine who make pop genre
magazine, you can tell its for that with it’s pink and white colour
scheme. It has a female star on the cover which “Cheryl Cole”
and only teenage girls will listen to her music, this is to attract
fans. You can also see pictures of other stars who are male and
are on the beach in boxes at the bottom. The cover has the star’s
name “ Cheryl” going across her picture with a quote underneath
this is done to immediately attract fans to this magazine. You can
also see posters as the bottom which teenage girls would have.
The masthead is easily recognisable as its got the name we love
pop in back black writing on a white background but also the
world love is not there and they have used a pink love heart
there instead which adds an effect.
• This magazine is specifically targeted at teenage girls as the
colours used are feminine but also the main artist on the cover
would only be popular with females rather than males who
would be more interested in a footballer. The cover also has
many cover lines which grab attention as they appear to be quite
interesting but they also stand out too.

Date of publication-
The first things is to set a date when the magazine is going to be published. By this is when the
magazine will be released to the public. Once this date has been finalized the publishing
companies would have to work out a schedule therefore from working out the schedule they will
have to make sure that they stick to this deadline in order for the magazine to get completed and
published in time.
Managing the schedule-
This is the most important step as the publishing company need to make sure that they time
themselves well and that they stick to the time schedule in order to be successful with their
magazine. The publishing company should give themselves enough time in case anything goes
wrong so that they can fix their mistakes.
Editorial and budgetary decision-
This next step happens within the production process of the magazine. By this the editorial
decisions involve coming up with what topic will be covered in the issue of the magazine, within
this as well the team talk about various content that will make up the main content of the
magazine. As well as this they look how much money they have in order to produce this magazine
and if they need to budget themselves in any way.

•Making sure that the grammar and punctuation are use correctly.
•Making sure that all the articles follow the house style throughout.

Page layout-
In large publishing companies there are teams responsible for the pay layout. Their job is to work
on the page layout, and that they come up together with ideas in order to make the magazine. In
working on the magazine they use a programme in order to work on the layout called Desk-top
publishing programs such as InDesign or PageMaker.
Proofreading-
Once the page layout stage is done, the next stage is proofreading, by this the editorial
department will print out a hardcopy of the magazine for reading through it and to find anything
which may be incorrect. By printing a hardcopy it is a lot easier to proofread rather than a soft-
copy. Any mistakes which are spotted are easily corrected on the DTP file, the editorial team
keeps proof-reading until they member is happy with the magazines content.

After proof-reading the file containing the magazine is send to the printing company.But before
printing the company prints the hundreds or thousands of copies requested by the publishing
company, the publishing company then gets sent these copies which then get proof-read again by
the editorial department.

with the printing of the magazine they will package them and send them to a
warehouse near by, from the warehouse they are then distributed to the

bold logo. I was inspired to
keep the masthead, in this

Strapline-the strapline denotes
‘The UK biggest music magazine’
this connotes that Q is one of the

page in white font against a black
background means that the reader
is more likely to read it first. Also
by having a powerful strapline next
to the logo gives an impression that
the publisher (Bauer) wants you to
know that the best magazine is Q.
I also decided to keep the strapline
at the top of the front cover, as this
is where readers tend to look first.
Cover lines- By having a variation
of different fonts draws the
readers eyes to all different parts
of the magazine. Having a variation
of fonts provides different bits of
content to the reader as well as
this it appeals to the reader by
including other artists names. This

Main text - Having the large piece of text to
the side of the photo allows readers to
swap from looking at the picture to reading
through the text which is related to the
artist. As well as this I have realized d that
there is only one man picture this could be
due to the fact that they want to want the
reader to focus on only one image, and by
the image being so detailed and important
by adding others may make it overcrowded.
Drop Capital: The drop capital is the large letter starting of the
article. This tells the reader that the beginning of the article
starts there. The drop capital is bright red which links to the
contents page and the front cover.

Reason - When creating my magazine I want to make
sure that my magazine masthead is eye-catching to
the reader, I have come up with a name for my
magazine ‘Simply Sound’ the reason for choosing this
particular name I decided to reflect my masthead on
my logo, by this it is going to be simple but eye-
catching. I have chosen to call my magazine ‘simply
sound’ because my magazine is simply going to based
round music which creates a ‘sound’ as well as this
some people use the word ‘sound’ as describing
something which is good.

The main house styles of Q magazines are most of
the covers have a light background, and the image of
the artist is normally dark or they are wearing dark
clothes, by having the artist in dark clothing or the
image being dark against a light background makes
the artist stand out. By doing this it makes the
reader be drawn to the image of the artist first more
than the word. Although, on the other hand if the
reader is being drawn to the photo first of the artist
and they like the artist this may make them read the
words around the image.
Format- The length of Q magazine is 28.5cm, the
width of Q magazine is 21cm.
Language- The language used on the cover of the
magazine are mainly bold words, such as ‘breaking
BAD’ and ‘ROCK STAR'. These words would mainly
appeal to the audience such as men, but this the
words are quite bold statement words whereas this
wouldn't’t appeal as much to a woman. Therefore
this may mean the magazines are a lot more popular
therefore more people are buying them making high
profits for shops selling them. I Have decided to
analysis this front covers house style and the fonts in
order to give me inspiration for my own magazine,
and how I will make it look neat and professional.

to each front cover of ‘Q music magazine’. In the first picture its
conveys a dark simple side to the magazine compared to the
others, this could be done to convey the type of artist that is on
the front cover, as his music may be simple, a gentle. Where as
compared to the middle magazine the middle magazine is a lot
more bright and colourful making the artist stand out in the
middle of the magazine. Having white font against skin tone of
the artist really makes his own hand signed autograph stand out
attracting customers.

Masthead: I am keeping the logo in the left hand
corner of each page I am doing this so that my logo
becomes recognisable to the reader when they go to
buy another copy of my magazine.
Main title: I have decided to have the
main title of the interview right next to
my logo the reason for this is because I
still want my logo to be the last thing
they remember, and as well as this it
means that the title is covering the
whole page focusing on the text and
photos.

69. Interview draft planning
This image conveys how I have drafted a
dew questions and ideas for my interview,
going over what I would ask. After
planning I began to write up the interview
with a series of questions.
I began to draft questions before finalizing
what I was actually going to write, I did
this so that I wasn’t just asking closed
questions like ‘Yes or No'. I also drafted
questions as to make sure that they fit
with the artist I am interviewing. I chose
Krept and Konan because they are a
popular well known group and fits in well
with my target audience. Although, I just
decided in the end to interview just krept,
as when looking on my magazine cover, a
image of just one person looked a lot
better than the two.

70. Interview question ideas
Krept joins us at Simply Sound to chat about his life in music and his
lifestyle out of his music career.
So Krept lets get the questions rolling, how old were you when you
started off in the music industry?
Krept: I was around 13 years when I started loving music. I started to
make up my own raps after school and my other mates would join in
and we would have a rap off (laughs). So basically that is how it all
started and I’m still creating raps to this day.
We love your music and your rapping is great. When you were
younger did you think you would be here today?
Krept: Nah defo not, we just began making up raps in our bedroom
after school for a bit of fun, and now were here sharing those raps we
made with our friends.
What do you aim for you music to do to the younger generation?
Krept:I just wanted my music to inspire young people, as when I was
growing up music play a huge part of my life. I want my music to
motivate people to carry on with their goals you know, and it can show
that like me coming from a run down house in Croydon you can make
it somewhere in the world.
What could be a motivation quote you could give to your fans then?
There's going to be times in your life when people tell you, you can't
do something, and there's going to be times in your life when people
tell you, you cant live your dreams.
Have you had any favorite or life changing moments this year?
Krept- My favorite moment by far was when i performed at Reading
Festival the crowd when crazy man! The screams were so loud! It was
unreal to think that all these people have come to see me perform.
Who’s your celebrity friend, and is there anyone you would like to
make a song with?
Krept: Ive always wanted to make music with Kanye West as his music
inspired me a lot, ive got a few celebrity friends, most of them singers
or rappers like Stormzy, and Ed Sheeran.I would love to preform with
Fetty Wrap as im close mates with him, but we live such busy lifes,
when it comes to preforming our timings never add up.
How do you come up with the raps you make?
Krept-I tend to base my raps around passed experiences in life when
growing up I didn’t have the best childhood you know always getting into
trouble and fights in school, getting myself mixed up with the wrong people,
like joining gangs.
Do you think young people are targets for this type of up bringing, getting
themselves into gangs? And a fan wanted to know do you have any pets?
Krept: yeah course, there are so many young people getting mixed up in the
wrong groups, getting involved in drugs and crime, you know I was young
too and got mixed up with the wrong people.
Krept- Yeah I’ve got a family, but would love to have a pet of our own but
cant as were always on the go.
Who do you base your style of clothing on?
Krept- my style icon is Usher, I've always been inspired by what he wears
and he can make wearing sunglasses in the dark, good !! (LAUGHS)
Hahaha yeah he can, is there a song which you have enjoyed writing the
most?
Krept –My most enjoyable song I have written would be Dreams featuring
Ed Sheeran, I loved writing this song with Ed as he’s a huge inspiration to me
selling out the O2, when he first started off singing on the streets for some
pocket money .. Now look where he is!!
Krept-ahhh no way! He's I'm a HUGE fan of Ed sheeran!!

Font-When deciding what font I want in my
magazine, I want to make sure that it is consistent
throughout. I have also made sure that my font
looks interesting as it would appeal/address to the
target audience. I have chosen several fonts that
will be used in my magazine, because some are
easier to read than others when sized differently,
although I didn't’t want my magazine to contain a
lot of different fonts as it could just confuse the
reader, and become messy.
House Color-My main color schemes in my
magazine are going to be grey and yellow.
The reason I have picked these two colors is
because I want my magazine to appeal to
both girls and boys. So therefore the grey
side of the magazine is for the boys and the
yellow for the girls, so that my magazine is
covering both genders.

72. Front cover analysis of magazine of
inspiration.
Logo-One of the main and most important
parts of Q magazine is the logo. I think
this is the most important part of the
magazine because this depicts Q
magazines apart from everyone because
of their bold logo. I will repeat this in my
magazine as I was inspired by Q music
magazine.
Puff promotion- Having the
verbal code ‘plus’ in red font
means that the reader will be
drawn to it as it stands out
against the dark background.
Although, this also gives an
insight as to what is inside the
magazine as by giving the
reader an added bonus. I will
repeat this in my magazine as it
would draw the reader in to my
magazine as well as appealing
to the target audience.
Cover lines- I will include cover lines in my
magazine by having a variation of different
fonts draws the readers eyes to all different
parts of the magazine. Having a variation of
fonts provides different bits of content to the
reader as well as this it appeals to the reader
by including other artists names. This is called
‘start appeal’

Positioning of the page-I was
inspired by this page when
making my magazine, I liked
the way the text was to one
side and the multiple photos
were on the other side, I think
this is a good idea as it allows
the reader to refer back to the
images while reading.
Drop Capital-When making my magazine I am
going to consider using as large capital letter during
the interview, I think this will had to the effect of
the magazine as well as it will be eye-catching to
the reader when they are flicking through the
magazine.
Consistently of logo- I have decided that
throughout my magazine I will keep my logo in
the left hand corner I have decided to do this
as my logo soon with become rememberble to
the readers, as well as when they are in a
magazine shop they will be able to remember
my logo.

74. Conclusion
• In this learning outcome I focused on todays generation to come up with
ideas fitting my brief for my music magazine. I started this by coming up
with two similar music magazines which were ‘We love pop’ and ‘Q’ music
magazine. I first started off researching about the two magazines reaching
things like how frequently they get realised and what there content
involved and began to analyse their front covers and a double-page spread
from each magazine in order to pick up ideas for my own magazine.
• Once I had done this is began to analyse the language used within each
magazine, to determine what type of language I wanted to use my
magazine. Additionally I looked at the house styles of each magazine to
get an idea of the type of colours/fonts I wanted to use.
• Finally, I produced 2 draft sketches for the front cover and the double page
spread. During this is began to repeat ideas for my magazines of
inspiration include similar things like the position of the masthead and
including a strapline.

75. Conclusion Continued
• The genre I have decided to go for is with R&B, the reason why I chose this
genre of music over pop from my magazine of inspiration ‘we heart pop'.
Is because of my target audience as is 15-18+.This is why I have chosen the
genre to be R&B as people who fit into this age category typically listen to
R&B music, rather than pop as today they are influence by music in their
day to day life, from seeing new artists, and new music on social media, as
well as listening to the radio which typically plays more R&B on popular
radio stations like Capital FM and Kiss 100.
