This document is a newsletter from Our Saviour Lutheran Preschool informing parents about upcoming events and focusing on establishing classroom routines in the first few weeks of school. It discusses an upcoming field trip, book orders, providing snacks for class, pick-up procedures, and tuition due dates. Dear Parents,
Thank you so much for sharing your child with us this year. We are
so excited to get to know you and your family; we hope to make this a
wonderful learning experience for your family. As we partner with you in
the growth of your child’s faith and character development we pray
that you would grow together as a family as well as in your relationship
with Christ.
Our “Integrity” word of the month is Obedient. Our Bible verse is:
“…Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know
that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. 1 John 3:24
In our first few weeks of preschool we will be focusing on
establishing our routine. This simply means we will be working on
classroom procedures: lining up, making choices, bathroom
procedures, transitioning activities, cleaning up & taking care of our
environment. We want them to become autonomous in our
classroom; we desire to give them the tools necessary to be
independent learners and helpers within our classroom and the
world around them. We appreciate your patience in waiting to
volunteer to help in our class until October so that we can create
this setting with them.
Please note that our Country Kritters Field Trip is scheduled for
September 24 & 25 for all classes. You can help us with this trip by
signing up to chaperone, the class will leave shortly after arrival on
each day. Please see sign up on the table in the coat room. The
cost of this trip is $10.00 for each student; please turn in money by
September 22nd. The $10.00 covers the cost of the field trip and the
bus fee. Adults pay for entry at the door. Hillside Orchard Trip October
15th & 16th, please be on the lookout for more information and sign-
ups for chaperones. This field trip with bus and Orchard fees will be
$9.00 per child. Please have money in by October 12th or 13th. They
will come home with apples and a pumpkin.

2. Book Orders will be coming home for all classes this week, please fill
them out and get orders back to school by Friday September 18th or
next class day. Please make checks out to Scholastic Book Club, we will
send in your check with the classroom order.
Please plan to provide a nutritious snack for our class; please try to
keep them simple during the first weeks of school. When it is your
child’s turn to provide a snack, your child will bring home the
‘snack bin’, please include everything needed to serve your snack.
This includes napkins and spoons.
At pick-up times we will bring your child up to the parking lot
overhang. As we work on establishing our routine it is important
that you wait for your child in the Welcome Center just inside the
church doors or in your cars. It can become easily crowded in the
hallway outside our classroom; we appreciate your waiting for us by
the church doors.
The tuition payment for quarterly plans is due on or by October 15th;
please give to your child’s teacher or drop in at the office.
This week we will talk about how Jesus welcomes all the little
children into His family. We will sing about his love as we discuss
the cross and what that means to us as Christians. We will talk
about forgiveness using an old coffee mug with a broken handle and
a story that happened to me many years ago. The emphasis will be
that when we use words or actions to hurt others we can’t take the
action back but are required to ask for and give forgiveness. As we
talk about being OBEDIENT to God we will focus on forgiveness.
Remember to talk about your child’s day with them, ask them to
share their “highs & lows” from each day. Please note that studies
show the most important times of your child’s day are the first five
minutes of each interaction: waking in the morning, picking up after
school, or play dates etc… Use these times to connect with them,
our desire is that they get used to sharing their world with you so
that 10 yrs from now they are so used to sharing with you it isn’t a
struggle to drag out a few words about their day. ☺☺☺

5. Stages of ART
Every now and then we become involved with a teaching principle that we feel you would find as
fascinating as we do. Many of these moments will be taking place in our classroom throughout
the year; we’d like t o share it with you. It has to do with the developmental stages that children
pass through in their drawings.
There are basically five of these stages that can take place between the ages of two and six. By
observing, we can learn a lot about how your child is maturing. Let’s get into the stages so that
you can understand the process as well and watch your child develop through them.
STAGE ONE: Random Scribbling: The very young child makes large arcs on the paper. They
have no “visual” control over where the marks go. Here, however, the motor activity of using the
entire arm is very important to their development.
STAGE TWO: Controlled Scribbling: Now, there is greater variety of scribbles. The arcs get
smaller because the child is using the wrist. Now, there is visual control. The child looks at the
drawing until it is finished.
STAGE THREE: Names Scribbling: There is no doubt in the child’s mind about what his or her
picture is. Adults, however, can’t recognize it. Drawings are symbols of the objects, events or
experiences that the child has had. This is an important step because the child is using abstract
thought. The child can see the relationship between the marks on the paper and the symbol or
object.
STAGE FOUR: Early Presentation: The drawings start to look like the objects they
represent. There will be distortion in size. Usually, the most important part of the drawing will be
much larger than the rest. Their drawings are still not adult pleasers, but they are very important
to the child. Also, by this time, the child has naturally changed the grip on the drawing instrument
to an almost adult grip. Objects that are important to the child will appear.
STAGE FIVE: Preschematic: The progression goes on very naturally. Now, objects are more
relative to size. There is a right side up to the paper and a base line develops, i.e., green for
grass, blue for sky. By this time, the child is using the wrist and fingers and has mastered an adult
grip on the drawing instrument. Authorities have observed that when a child is doing closed
forms in his or drawings, the child will also be able to use closed forms in writing his or her name.
If the child is in the early scribbling stages, the name will also be scribbled. If this is the case, the
child should not be forces to print letters because he/she is not ready.
