Sensation and perception are discussed. Sensation is the meaningless response of sensory organs to environmental stimuli like light and sound waves. Perception involves combining sensations to form meaningful sensory experiences like seeing a chair or hearing a guitar. Transduction is the process where sensory organs change stimuli into electrical signals in the brain. Adaptation is the decreasing response of senses with continuous stimulation like clothes on skin. Psychopathology studies mental illness and distress. Common psychological disorders include neurodevelopmental disorders diagnosed in childhood, anxiety disorders involving excessive fear and worry, dissociative disorders interrupting consciousness, depressive disorders with sad moods, and schizophrenia affecting thinking, feelings, and behavior.
