Mental Illness
Presentation by: Crisha Kaye B. Añabeza
Mental Illness
• Mental illness, also called mental health
disorders, refers to a wide range of mental health
conditions — disorders that affect your mood,
thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness
include depression, anxiety disorders,
schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive
behaviors.
• Mental illness can occur when theb brain (or part
of the brain) is not working well or working in
the wrong way.
Symptoms of Mental Illnesses:
• Feeling sad or down.
• Confused thinking or reduced ability to
concentrate.
• Excessive fears or worries, or extreme
feelings of guilt.
• Extreme mood changes of highs and
lows.
• Withdrawal from friends and activities.
• Significant tiredness, low energy or
problems sleeping.
A mental illness can make you
miserable and can cause problems
in your daily life, such as at school
or work or in relationships. In most
cases, symptoms can be managed
with a combination of medications
and talk therapy (psychotherapy).
Causes of Mental Illnesses:
• childhood abuse, trauma, or neglect
• social isolation or loneliness
• experiencing discrimination and stigma, including racism
• social disadvantage, poverty or debt
• bereavement (losing someone close to you)
• severe or long-term stress
• having a long-term physical health condition
• unemployment or losing your job
• homelessness or poor housing
• being a long-term carer for someone
• drug and alcohol misuse
Mental health problems can
have a wide range of causes.
It's likely that for many people
there is a complicated
combination of factors –
although different people may
be more deeply affected by
certain things than others.
Common Disorders of Mental Illnesses
• Anxiety Disorders.
• Depression.
• Bipolar Disorder.
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
• Schizophrenia.
• Eating Disorders.
• Disruptive behaviour and dissocial
disorders.
• Neurodevelopmental disorders.
A mental disorder is
characterized by a clinically
significant disturbance in an
individual’s cognition,
emotional regulation, or
behaviour. It is usually
associated with distress or
impairment in important areas
of functioning. There are many
different types of mental
disorders. Mental disorders
may also be referred to as
mental health conditions.
How can we avoid Mental Illnesses?
• Talk about your feelings.
• Get a good night's sleep.
• Eat well.
• Stay active.
• Practice mindfulness, a way to
be fully engaged and present in
the moment.
• Keep in touch.
Many factors influence our mental health, such as our personal history (our
family, relationships and how we see ourselves) and our social
circumstances (including our housing, employment and education).
That’s all, Thank
you!
