WHAT IS SEMICONDUCTOR?
• A semiconductor material is one whose electrical properties lie
in between those of insulators and good conductors. Examples
are: germanium and silicon.
• In mathematically, A semiconductor is a substance which has
resistivity 10-4 to 0.5 Ω-m in between conductors and insulators
e.g. germanium, silicon, selenium, carbon etc.
• In terms of energy bands, semiconductors can be defined as
those materials which have almost an empty conduction band
and almost filled valence band with a very narrow energy gap (of
the order of 1 eV) separating the two.

INVENTION HISTORY OF SEMICONDUCTOR
• The beginning of semiconductor
research is marked by Michael
Faraday’s 1833 report on negative
temperature coefficient of resistance
of silver sulfide. This is the first
observation of any semiconductor
property.

  • 4. WHAT IS SEMICONDUCTOR? • A semiconductor material is one whose electrical properties lie in between those of insulators and good conductors. Examples are: germanium and silicon. • In mathematically, A semiconductor is a substance which has resistivity 10-4 to 0.5 Ω-m in between conductors and insulators e.g. germanium, silicon, selenium, carbon etc. • In terms of energy bands, semiconductors can be defined as those materials which have almost an empty conduction band and almost filled valence band with a very narrow energy gap (of the order of 1 eV) separating the two. 4
