introduction
Communication is the action or process of
communicating. Oxford (1995:230). When all
people speak in a communication is a process.
And then, there must be both sender and
receiver. Sometimes, all people only talk
interaction not only directly interact with
Communicator alone, but it can
communication through songs, poems etc.
Communication mainly through song means
something more meaningful. Human beings
need language as their communication
because language as the branch of linguistic
In the branch of linguistics, semantics is the
study about all of the aspects of meaning outside
the gramatical of language which different with
morphology and syntax that concern with
gramatical of language. In this paper, the writer
interest to discuss about semantic analysis on song

aspect in linguistics and song lyric is also have

study of meaning and linguistic
semantic is the study of how languages
organize and express meanings. Its
means that, meaning in linguistic

humans learn
•how they retain, recall or

•concerned with how we

Lexical
Meaning
According to Harimurti (1982:103) in
Mansoer Pateda book said that lexical
meaning is the meaning of the word
when the word is seen in isolation,
either in form or shape lexeme
affixes whose meaning more or less
fixed, as can be read in a particular
language dictionary.
Contextual
Meaning
Contextual meaning is the meaning
according to the context. According to Abdul
Chaer (2007:290), Contextual meaning is the
meaning of a lexeme or word inside a
context. A contextual definition is also a
definition in which the term is used by
embedding it in a larger expression
containing its explanation.
According Mansoer Petada (116-2001), Contextual meaning
could be regarded as a situational meaning. It raised as a result of the
relationship between speech and context. It took the form of a lot of
things. There are some contexts here, they are:
• the first context organs, including those relating to gender,
position the speaker, the speaker or the listener age , socio-
economic background speaker or the listener.
• The second context of the situation, such a situation is safe or
noisy situations.
• The third context purposes, such as asking or expecting
something.
• The fourth context of whether or not a formal conversation.
• The fifth context of the speaker or the listener’s mood such as
afraid, excited, upset or angry.
• The sixth time context, for example, night or day.
• Context seventh place, for example where at school, at home, in
the field, etc.
• Eighth object context, mean what the focus of the conversation.
• Ninth context fittings speak or hear the speaker or the listener.
• Tenth linguistic context that does meet the rules of the language
used by both sides.
• Eleventh context of language, meaning the language used.
However, the contextual meaning could be regarded to the
situation, where the time, the language usage environment.

Research Finding and Discussion
• The first stanza:
Try to have no regrets
Even if it’s just tonight
How you gonna walk ahead
If you keep living blind
From this stanza I just want to use the words “Blind” to
explain the lexical and contextual meaning. The word “Blind” in this
lyric consider as an adjective. The lexical meaning of “blind” is unable
to see; sightless. In the contextual meaning “blind” means that living
in the darkness or do not want to look forward of the future.
• The second stanza:
I’m waiting, waiting, just waiting
I’m waiting, waiting outside the lines
Waiting outside the lines
From this stanza, the lexical meaning of the word “waiting” is
the action of staying where one is delaying action until a particular
time or until something else happens. In the contextual meaning, the
word “waiting” means that the singer want to give the motivation to
the listeners and make the listeners believe that the singer always be
there and wait them until they can be successful person.
• The third stanza:
Stuck in the same position
You deserve so much more
There’s a whole world around us
Just waiting to be explored
From this stanza, I will use the word “world” in line 3 that
consider as a noun. The lexical meaning of the word “world” is the
earth, together with all of its countries, peoples, societies, institution
and natural features. In the contextual meaning, it can be interpreted
as a science or something that can to be learned and explored to
make us more creative and productive.
• The fourth stanza:
Don’t wanna have to force you to smile
I’m here to help you notice the rainbow
Cause I know
What’s in you is out there
From this stanza, the word “rainbow” consider as a noun. The
lexical meaning of the word “rainbow” is an arch of colors formed in
the sky in certain circumstances, caused by the refraction and
dispersion of the sun’s light by rain or other water droplets in the
atmosphere. In the contextual meaning, the word “rainbow” can be
defined as the future life or the meaning of true life. The singer
wants the listeners know that there are so many possibilities if they
believe and take every opportunity in their life.
Conclusion and Suggestion
• The lexical meaning here is the meaning of the terms used in the
lyric describe in the lexicon or dictionary. The researcher explained
those as suitable as were wrote in general dictionary and it fairly
different from the meaning in context. The contextual meaning is
the terms explained the actual meaning according to the situation
in which they were used. Thus, in this discussion is interesting event
unique to be learned in order to avoid misunderstanding and
misinterpreted.
• Finally, the researcher suggest that in listening the songs not only
just listen and enjoy it but also we have to know the meaning about
that song itself to take the lesson from the lyric. So we can get the
positive thing to motivate our self.
