Challenges in Defining, Designing, and Measuring “Digital Literacy” Developm...Rebecca Reynolds
This presentation discusses scholarly definitions for the research construct “digital literacy,” identifies limitations in conceptualizations to-date, fand presents a proposed framework of Six Contemporary Learning Abilities (or 6-CLAs: Create, Manage, Publish, Socialize, Research, Surf). This explicated framework offers a more structured definition based on student-centered social constructivist learning theory. The article then presents an empirical investigation of digital literacy development, drawing on the framework, and its proposed approach for operationalizing technology activities (whether as research constructs or instructional activities). The empirical analysis is situated in the context of an innovative educational program implementation of game design based learning for middle and high school students offered in a U.S. state, in the 2011/2012 school year. The study explores how student engagement in activities representing the 6-CLA dimensions factor, inter-correlate, change from pre- to post-program, and bring about student transfer of that engagement, from school to home environments. Findings reveal that the dimensions proposed hang together well, students change in their engagement as a result of the intervention across multiple dimensions in both school and home contexts, and at-school engagement in the dimensions contributes to at-home engagement in them (in various ways as reported). The study offers support for the proposed framework, provides some evidence of digital divide effects for the intervention, presents questions for further inquiry, and offers a conceptual and research design stake in the ground for other researchers interested in the digital literacy construct.
Leveraging Flat Files from the Canvas LMS Data Portal at K-StateShalin Hai-Jew
A lot of data are created in an LMS instance, and much of this can be analyzed for insight. In 2016, Instructure, the makers of Canvas, made their LMS data available to their customers through a data portal (updated monthly). This portal enables access to a number of flat files related to that particular instance. This presentation showcases how this big data was analyzed on a regular laptop with basic office software, to summarize Kansas State University’s use of the LMS. Methods for analysis include the following: basic descriptive statistics, survival analysis, computational linguistic analysis, and others.
The results are reported out with both numbers and data visualizations, including classic pie charts, line graphs, bar charts, mixed-charts, word clouds, and others. The findings provide some insights about how to approach the data, how to use a data dictionary, and other methods for extracting the data for awareness and practical decision-making. This work also is suggestive of next steps for more advanced analysis (using the flat files in a SQL database).

The recent emergence of the “Linked Data” approach for publishing data represents a major step forward in realizing the original vision of a web that can "understand and satisfy the requests of people and machines to use the web content" – i.e. the Semantic Web. This new approach has resulted in the Linked Open Data (LOD) Cloud, which includes more than 70 large datasets contributed by experts belonging to diverse communities such as geography, entertainment, and life sciences. However, the current interlinks between datasets in the LOD Cloud – as we will illustrate – are too shallow to realize much of the benefits promised. If this limitation is left unaddressed, then the LOD Cloud will merely be more data that suffers from the same kinds of problems, which plague the Web of Documents, and hence the vision of the Semantic Web will fall short.
This thesis presents a comprehensive solution to address the issue of alignment and relationship identification using a bootstrapping based approach. By alignment we mean the process of determining correspondences between classes and properties of ontologies. We identify subsumption, equivalence and part-of relationship between classes. The work identifies part-of relationship between instances. Between properties we will establish subsumption and equivalence relationship. By bootstrapping we mean the process of being able to utilize the information which is contained within the datasets for improving the data within them. The work showcases use of bootstrapping based methods to identify and create richer relationships between LOD datasets. The BLOOMS project (http://wiki.knoesis.org/index.php/BLOOMS) and the PLATO project, both built as part of this research, have provided evidence to the feasibility and the applicability of the solution.
Metaliteracy and the Participatory Role of Learners in Today’s Social Informa...Tom Mackey
Participating effectively in today’s social information environment requires abilities and dispositions that encompass and extend beyond those required to engage in academic research. The open, participatory nature of social media requires learners to take on diverse roles, from critical consumer to informed producer and responsible sharer of information in dynamic and sometimes uncertain spaces. This collaborative and connected world also provides opportunities for learners to expand their roles as communicator, researcher, and teacher. In order to connect fully and successfully in this sphere, our students must understand and accept their potential contributions and responsibilities when consuming and creating information in an environment that is similarly fractured and divisive. They need to adapt to ever-changing technologies and must be prepared to ask critical questions about the information they encounter from formal and informal sources. General Education, in particular, is key to how we prepare students for this ever-shifting and dynamic socially connected world.
Web Mining Based Framework for Ontology Learningcsandit
Today, the notion of Semantic Web has emerged as a prominent solution to the problem oforganizing the immense information provided by World Wide Web, and its focus on supporting
a better co-operation between humans and machines is noteworthy. Ontology forms the major
component of Semantic Web in its realization. However, manual method of ontology
construction is time-consuming, costly, error-prone and inflexible to change and in addition, it requires a complete participation of knowledge engineer or domain expert. To address this
issue, researchers hoped that a semi-automatic or automatic process would result in faster and
better ontology construction and enrichment. Ontology learning has become recently a major
area of research, whose goal is to facilitate construction of ontologies, which reduces the effort
in developing ontology for a new domain. However, there are few research studies that attempt
to construct ontology from semi-structured Web pages. In this paper, we present a complete
framework for ontology learning that facilitates the semi-automation of constructing and
enriching web site ontology from semi structured Web pages. The proposed framework employs
Web Content Mining and Web Usage mining in extracting conceptual relationship from Web.
The main idea behind this concept was to incorporate the web author's ideas as well as web
users’ intentions in the ontology development and its evolution.

An efficient educational data mining approach to support e-learningVenu Madhav
The e-learning is a recent development that has
emerged in the educational system due to the growth of the
information technology. The common challenges involved
in The e-learning platform include the collection and
annotation of the learning materials, organization of the
knowledge in a useful way, the retrieval and discovery of
the useful learning materials from the knowledge space in a
more significant way, and the delivery of the adaptive and
personalized learning materials. In order to handle these
challenges, the proposed system is developed using five
different steps of knowledge input such as the annotation of
the learning materials, creation of knowledge space,
indexing of learning materials using the multi-dimensional
knowledge and XML structure to generate a knowledge
grid and the retrieval of learning materials performed by
matching the user query with the indexed database and
ontology. The process is carried out in two modules such as
the server module and client module. The proposed
approach is evaluated using various parameters such as the
precision, recall and F-measure. Comprehensive results are
achieved by varying the keywords, number of documents
and the K-size. The proposed approach has yielded
excellent results by obtaining the higher evaluation metric,
together with an average precision of 0.81, average
Keynote for Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries 2017
The theory and practice of digital libraries provides a long history of thought around how to manage knowledge ranging from collection development, to cataloging and resource description. These tools were all designed to make knowledge findable and accessible to people. Even technical progress in information retrieval and question answering are all targeted to helping answer a human’s information need.
However, increasingly demand is for data. Data that is needed not for people’s consumption but to drive machines. As an example of this demand, there has been explosive growth in job openings for Data Engineers – professionals who prepare data for machine consumption. In this talk, I overview the information needs of machine intelligence and ask the question: Are our knowledge management techniques applicable for serving this new consumer?
Nurturing the Connections: The Role of Quantitative Ethnography in Learning A...Dragan Gasevic
This talk will explore connections between two emerging fields focused on harnessing the potential of data – learning analytics and quantitative ethnography. Learning analytics is focused on the analysis of data collected from user interactions with technology with the goal of advancing our understanding of and enhancing human learning. Despite some early success stories and widespread interest, producing meaningful and actionable results is still a top open research challenge for learning analytics. The talk will first explore how quantitative ethnography can offer promising approaches that can address this open challenge in learning analytics. The talk will next discuss how progress in learning analytics can be used to accelerate the development of the field of quantitative ethnography. The talk will finally outline promising directions for future research at the intersection of learning analytics and quantitative ethnography.

This analysis offers many opportunities to advance understanding and enhance learning and the environments in which learning occurs. Existing research has shown how learning analytics can provide contributions to different areas of education such as prediction of student success, uncovering learning strategies, understanding affective states, and unpacking the role social networks in learning. While these results have shown much promise, one critical challenge remains unclear – how learning analytics can help track learning progression and inform assessment especially from the perspective of the 21st century skills. This talk will explore opportunities and challenges for the integration of methods commonly used in learning analytics to analyze different digital traces with methods commonly used in assessment. The talk particularly focuses on open learning environments where analytics-based assessment is rather underexplored in contrast to assessment in specialized (intelligent tutoring) systems where the combined use of data mining and assessment has been established for some time now.

The field learning analytics is established with the promise for the education sector to embrace the use of data for decision making. There are many examples of successful use of learning analytics to enhance student experience, increase learning outcomes, and optimize learning environments. Despite much interest in learning analytics, many higher education institutions are still looking for effective ways that can enable systemic uptake. The talk will first describe some selected examples of the successful use of learning analytics in higher education. Key challenges identified to affect implementation of learning analytics will then be discussed. This will be followed with an overview of an approach to the development of institutional policy and strategy for the learning analytics implementation in higher education. The talk will be based on the findings of several international studies and will critically interrogate the role of institutional and cultural differences.

- systemic approaches to the development and adoption of learning analytics are critical,
- multidisciplinary teams are necessary to unlock a full potential of learning analytics, and
- capacity development at institutional levels through the inclusion of diverse stakeholders is essential for full learning analytics adoption.

Learning with me Mate: Analytics of Social Networks in Higher EducationDragan Gasevic
Effects of social interactions are reported in research on higher education to lead to positive outcomes such as higher levels of internalization, sense of community, academic achievement, metacognition, and student retention. The role of social networks has especially been emphasized in research due to the availability of theoretical foundations and analytic methods to investigate their effects in higher education. The increased use of technologies in education allows for the collection of large and rich datasets about social networks which call for the use of novel analytics methods. This talk will first give a brief overview of the existing work on and lessons learned from some well-known studies on social networks in higher education in diverse situations from face-to-face to massive open online courses. The talk will then identify critical challenges that require immediate attention in order for the study of social networks to make a sustainable impact on learning and teaching. The most important take away from the talk will be that
- computational aspects of the study of social networks need to be integrated deeply with theory, research and practice,
- novel methods for the study of critical dimensions (discourse, structure and dynamics) that shape network formation and network effects are necessary, and
- innovative instructional approaches are essential to address the changing conditions created by contemporary educational and technological contexts.
Technologies to support self-directed learning through social interactionDragan Gasevic
This talk will describe underlying principles, design, and experience gained with ProSolo, a platform that supports personalized, competency-based learning through social interaction. Traditional educational models are primarily focused on classroom education and training typically associated with the notion of credit hours as the (only) route towards formal credentials. This limits opportunities for creating personalized learning pathways in the changing educational context. ProSolo provide users with the ability to unbundle education programs, courses, and units into discrete yet inter-related competencies, allowing learners to construct their education pathway in a manner that better reflects their interests and future career motivations and requirements. ProSolo is developed with the intention of providing learners with opportunities to customize, modify, and personalize their self-directed learning journey. ProSolo supports the development of skills for self-directed learning by allowing learners to control the planning, learning, and presentation of outcomes associated with their learning. To support learners with different levels of prior knowledge, study skills, and cultural backgrounds, ProSolo offers features for supporting self-directed learning through three types of scaffolds, including instructional, social, and technological. Learning in ProSolo occurs within a socially rich environment that aggregates learners’ information created and shared in their existing online spaces. ProSolo makes use of learning analytics to empower learners and instructors in this new model of education. ProSolo was used in the Data, Learning, and Analytics MOOC and is currently being piloted at several university sites.

Educational data mining and learning analytics have to date largely focused on specific research questions that provide insight into granular interactions. These insights have bee abstracted to include the development of predictive models, intelligent tutors, and adaptive learning. While there are several domains where holistic or systems models have provided additional explanatory power, work around learning has not created holistic models with the level of concreteness or richness required. The need for both granular and integrated high-level view of learning is further influenced by distributed, life long, multi-spaced learning that today defines education. Drawing on social and knowledge graph theory, we propose the development of a Personal Learning Graph (PLeG) - an open and learner-owned profile that addresses cognitive, affective, and related elements that reflect what a learner knows, is able to do, and processes through which she learns best. This talk will introduce PLeG, detail required technical infrastructure, and articulate how it would interact with established learning software.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
