This document discusses different types of seismic waves. P waves are faster longitudinal waves that cause compression and rarefaction. S waves are slower transverse waves that cause a crest and trough motion and cannot pass through liquids. Surface waves are a combination of P and S waves and move the slowest. Tsunamis are ocean waves that are above normal size ranging from 2 cm to 30 meters. Seismographs record ground movements and use the different arrival times of P and S waves to locate earthquakes and find underground resources.
