Plants use photosynthesis to produce their own food, while animals cannot. During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide through stomata in their leaves and water through their roots. Using energy from sunlight captured by chlorophyll, plants combine carbon dioxide and water to produce oxygen and sugars as food. Plants store this extra food as sugar and starch in their tissues. All living things, including plants and animals, require energy from food to carry out functions like growth, movement, and tissue repair.
