Feedback to: So ... What do youFeedback to: So ... What do you
know about how plants getknow about how plants get
food?food?
1. Plants do not need food. All living things, including plants,
need food. That’s the life process called nutrition.
2. Plants make their own food. Yes they do! By a process
called photosynthesis!
3. Plant roots absorb food from the soil. No! plants do not
absorb food … they absorb water (+ mineral ions/salts like
magnesium, potassium). Water is one of the ‘raw
materials’ used in food-making or photosynthesis.
4. Plants use their own food made during photosynthesis.
Yes. Plants use the food they make for energy and as raw
materials to make their various body structures.
5. Plants absorb water containing mineral ions/salts from
the soil to make food. Yes they do!
6. Plants need Carbon dioxide from the air to make their
food. Plants use the Carbon from Carbon dioxide to
make sugars.

know about how plants getknow about how plants get

7. Variegated leaves cannot make food. If this were true
then plants with those kinds of leaves would die! Food is
made in the green parts of variegated leaves.
8. Light is required for photosynthesis. The energy from
light is what is converted to energy in food by plants
9. Oxygen is required for photosynthesis. Oxygen is not
required, rather, it is produced.
10. Plants produce glucose from photosynthesis. Yes this
is the first product.
11. Plants do photosynthesis in the day and respiration at
nights. Whilst photosynthesis needs light to occur,
respiration can occur whether light is present or not – so
respiration occurs both in the day and night.
From the feedback to these questions, think
about how you would define photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis can be summarized as a word equation:
You already know these chemical symbols: water = H2O,
Carbon dioxide = CO2 and Oxygen = O2. Note that glucose =
C6H12O6. How would you re-write the above word equation
for photosynthesis with chemical symbols? Try it!

The equation says: Six molecules of Carbon dioxide plus six
molecules of water in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight
produce one molecule of glucose and six molecules of
Oxygen.
Answer: (a) The quantities of the ingredients, and (b) the
conditions under which the process occurs. Note that the
amount of elements balance on each side of the chemical
equation, shown below.

What is Photosynthesis?What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process in which green plants
use water and Carbon dioxide and the energy of light
to produce a carbohydrate e.g. glucose, in which
energy is stored, and during the process they give off
Oxygen.

reaction in the world!

“Even the ‘waste’ product of photosynthesis, i.e., oxygen,
is necessary for animals to survive. Hundreds of millions of
years ago, the earth’s atmosphere was mostly carbon
dioxide. Thanks to photosynthesis, there’s now enough
oxygen to sustain animal life.”

QUIZQUIZ INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION Test Yourself before you begin! Test Yourself before you begin! Feedback to: So ... What do youFeedback to: So ... What do you know about how plants getknow about how plants get food?food? 1. Plants do not need food. All living things, including plants, need food. That’s the life process called nutrition. 2. Plants make their own food. Yes they do! By a process called photosynthesis! 3. Plant roots absorb food from the soil. No! plants do not absorb food … they absorb water (+ mineral ions/salts like magnesium, potassium). Water is one of the ‘raw materials’ used in food-making or photosynthesis. 4. Plants use their own food made during photosynthesis. Yes. Plants use the food they make for energy and as raw materials to make their various body structures. 5. Plants absorb water containing mineral ions/salts from the soil to make food. Yes they do! 6. Plants need Carbon dioxide from the air to make their food. Plants use the Carbon from Carbon dioxide to make sugars.

QUIZQUIZ INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION Test Yourself before you begin! Test Yourself before you begin! Feedback to : So ... What do youFeedback to : So ... What do you know about how plants getknow about how plants get food?food? 7. Variegated leaves cannot make food. If this were true then plants with those kinds of leaves would die! Food is made in the green parts of variegated leaves. 8. Light is required for photosynthesis. The energy from light is what is converted to energy in food by plants 9. Oxygen is required for photosynthesis. Oxygen is not required, rather, it is produced. 10. Plants produce glucose from photosynthesis. Yes this is the first product. 11. Plants do photosynthesis in the day and respiration at nights. Whilst photosynthesis needs light to occur, respiration can occur whether light is present or not – so respiration occurs both in the day and night. From the feedback to these questions, think about how you would define photosynthesis.

Why is photosynthesis soWhy is photosynthesis so important?important? -- Food and fuel forFood and fuel for living thingsliving things“The ability to capture the energy of sunlight to make glucose puts plants at the bottom of the food chain, making them the producers of the energy needed for much of life on earth.” When animals eat, they get food and their energy or ‘fuel’, either directly or indirectly from green plants that carry on photosynthesis! When animals eat, they get food and their energy or ‘fuel’, either directly or indirectly from green plants that carry on photosynthesis! “Even the ‘waste’ product of photosynthesis, i.e., oxygen, is necessary for animals to survive. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the earth’s atmosphere was mostly carbon dioxide. Thanks to photosynthesis, there’s now enough oxygen to sustain animal life.” Watch this clip > http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=pmebLsHPbsU
