Second Life is a 3D virtual world entirely built by its residents. It began in 2003 with 64 acres and has grown to over 64,000 acres. Residents can purchase land, build structures, and interact with other users through customizable avatars. Many universities and libraries have established a presence in Second Life to conduct classes, meetings, and provide educational and cultural resources to users.

Search, citation and plagiarism: skills for a digital age have to be taught!CIT, NUS
By N. Sivasothi
A "writing workshop" of three 24-hour essays is integrated into a first year core module (biodiversity) and a personal statement and field report are requirements of a popular second year elective (ecology).
General and specific feedback is provided by motivated TAs to students in groups and individually. Offered both semesters, the typical enrolment is about 200 students. It had became clear that skills for a digital age had to be specifically taught to enhance scholarship. Some of those lessons are discussed here.
Besides the slew of tips for conducting an effective Google search, an ability to adapt the vocabulary of specific disciplines and an evaluation of site credibility are important skills.
Learning and understanding citation of sources in detail has turned out to be key in ensuring an appreciation and differentiation of the diversity of resources available online. This helps eliminate unintended plagiarism (which we evaluate using Turnintin) and facilitates an understanding of scholarship.
Other basics which require exploration are Creative Commons for use of digital resources, Wikipedia as a jump start rather than a primary resource, the quick way to invoke NUS Digital Library access to journals and the basics of email etiquette.
While our writing workshops were initiated to emphasise the critical basics of clear and effective writing, a critical component will be digital skills.
Please join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) on Tuesday, March 26, 10:00 am (Pacific time) to hear about authoring tools available for developing open educational resources including web pages, ePub, and PDF formats. This webinar will feature three different authoring tools that are being used to develop OER that can be made freely available.
Connexions Authoring Tool – Daniel Williamson, project manager of the OpenStax project at Connexions, will demonstrate the new Connexions repository authoring tool which provides a seamless development to distribution workflow for OER creation.
Pressbooks Authoring – Adrienne Watt, a Computer and Business instructor at both Douglas College and Northwest Community College in British Columbia will discuss and demonstrate the BCcampus Pressbooks platform that she and other instructors in British Columbia have used to develop open textbooks.
SoftChalk – Sue Evans, CEO and founder of SoftChalk, will demonstrate their award-winning eLearning content authoring tool and give us a tour of Softchalk cloud, their online community and learning object repository for sharing resources.

Abstract:
This paper and its accompanying presentation and video explore the library experience in Second Life and takes us on a visual journey through the virtual environment; meeting some of the librarians and educators, collaborators and partners. It introduces virtual worlds and their increasing significance to the library and educational communities, show-casing the work of the Alliance Virtual Library (AVL) founded and coordinated by the Alliance Library System of Peoria, Illinois, USA. Over the last 2.5 years, AVL has explored what it would be like to provide library services in virtual worlds, beginning with one librarian on a parcel of virtual land to a footprint that now comprises 50 islands, the virtual equivalent of 1.26 square miles, the size of Angel Island, standing proud and strong in the San Francisco Bay.
What are some of the issues and ongoing challenges facing libraries as they consider the creation of a virtual presence? What does a library “feel like” in a virtual world? (see accompanying video) How are libraries integrating Second Life with social networking sites such as FaceBook, Twitter, Delicious, YouTube, blogs and their existing web sites? Join us for this virtual world exploration and new media demonstration, I am Library.
Second Life: Virtual Libraries in a Virtual WorldMeg Kribble
A slightly re-organized version of the slides I used for a Second Life workshop for the Northeast Florida Library Information Network (NEFLIN) on August 28, 2007.
This Second Life tour highlights an educator's journey - Lyr Lobo - from the first days in world to the start of the NMC Teachers Buzz to taking virtual world classes, designing classes, teaching classes, examining research and mentoring on the Teen Grid.
It showcases projects and activities from English composition, literature, software design, game design, systems engineering methods, software requirements engineering and Teen Grid classes at the Ramapo islands by Suffern Middle School, including a couple of initial photos from the Summer 2007 - CS 835 robotics class activities at Colorado Technical University (CTU).
The photos include new content from recent projects and Elf Circle activities.
Presented at the CHECO Fall Conference on September 19, 2007 and also for UCCS on October 8, 2007
