Decisions, decisions, decisions — we make them all the time! The life we are living right now, is the outcome of decisions we made in the past. Our future depends on the decisions that we will make today or tomorrow. To put it simply, decision making can be defined as a choice of action in an uncertain environment. There are routine and life-altering decisions; individual and group decisions; short-term and long-term decisions; high and low-stake decisions, and decisions that can be changed as well as decisions that are cast in stone — the list can go on indefinitely. Those who are not allowed to make decisions are not happy about it, and those who are entrusted to make decisions may feel burdened by the responsibility. Decisions are sometimes made by scribbling on the back of a paper napkin and at other times with the help of massive computer programs. Some decisions need to be made on the spot — in the blink of an eye — with other decisions it is often recommended that we sleep on it.
The scope of decision making is very wide, the process sometimes starkly complex and individual styles vary considerably. It is such a fundamental part of our existence and growth; however, many of us may not give enough thought to our approach to decision making — does my decision making need any tweaking or am I happy with it as it is? In order to understand our own style of decision making, we need to consider what are the major dimensions of decision making and where do we stand on each of the dimensions.
Here are 5 important dimensions of decision making:
The Humble Programmer
It is relatively easy to express the range of technical capabilities that is good enough to build software reasonably well. Sure, it can generate much debate, but technical ability is the minor part, overall, of being an effective developer. I believe that software solutions can only ever be as good as the people who build them. Reflecting on the last 30 years or so of my career, I have observed that humble programmers are a lot more effective. It doesn't matter if they are working alone, in a small team or with many teams; humility plays a significant part in increasing their effectiveness. In this discussion, I walk through stories gathered from my work and life and what I have learned from others in a humble programmer's journey. In doing so, I extracted a few principles that have served myself and others well and codified a few practices. These complement what we already know but perhaps forgotten or overlooked. Humility affects the lines of code we write, the design decisions we make, and the very nature of a team and engineering organisation. I find that humble programmers create spaces where others are comfortable expressing their creativity and contribution. The consequence is better performance, a better way of working, and increased fulfilment, leading to higher effectiveness. The global software community is still a long distance from being fundamentally equal, inclusive and diverse. We understand the necessity and beneficial side effects of such a society. Humble programmers have a large part to play in shaping that future.

Overall, the proposal process was beneficial and she was pleased to complete what she outlined.

They can be made through either an intuitive or reasoned process, or a combination of the two. Independent from the level of difficulty we fall victim to the same cognitive and personal biases. Especially personal and cultural decisions are sometimes hard to make, cause the establishment and enumeration of the underlying criteria is hard.
The technological developments of the last decade have made poor decision making easier, more immediate, and more widely consequential. A good understanding of your decision making process and well known biases helps you to make better judgment. That said the talk will give you a psychology overview about the process of decision making and common pitfalls. It will share some tricks to make the right choices and cases of invaluable weak criteria.
