INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY
Development and progress of human civilization is the product
of education. System of education is influenced by our philosophy of
life. Philosophy wants to understand man in relation to the universe,
nature and God.
Philosophy is in-fact or urge to understand the universe.
Philosophy is a “Search for Comprehensive View of Nature” and
attempt at universal explanation of the nature of things.

2. Describe the scope of philosophy
3. Understand and discuss the branches of philosophy.
4. Analyze the relationship of education and philosophy.
5. Evaluate the role of philosophy in educational policy and practice.

SCOPE OF PHILOSOPHY
DEFINITION
Philosophy is a compound word made from Philien and Sophia –
Philien mean love and Sophia mean wisdom. Hence philosophy
means to love wisdom.
• The human struggle or urge to understand the universe.
• The philosophy is general theory of criticism.
• “Philosophy, like science, consists of theories of insights arrived at
as a result of systematic reflection”
• “Philosophy is concerned with everything as a universal science”
• The subject of philosophy is a collection of viewpoints such as
theory of metaphysics, knowledge, logics, cosmology, epistemology,
axiology, ethics, aesthetics etc. 5

Scope of Philosophy
The subject of philosophy discusses the following problems.
1. Metaphysical Problems
What is reality, creation, space, time, mater, world, cause and
effect, self, God etc.
2. Epistemological Problems
3. Logical Problems
Structure of thought, its laws, what is its relation with nature,
what are natural methods of thinking etc. 6

4. Problems of Semantics
(Science of meaning of words) it discusses the creation of
words and objects.
5. Philosophy of Science
It discusses the concept of causality – cause and effect.
6. Axiological Problem
It discusses the values from philosophical points of view.
7. Problems of Aesthetics
(Philosophical study of beauty) e.g. does art lie in the artist or
in his creation of art. Is there beauty in music, drama, picture
etc.
