The Lovely Bones Character Analysis
Imagine having a perfect family a wife and three kids also after a short 13 years having your eldest
child viciously torn away from you, in the story the lovely bones this is exactly what happened to Jack
salmon. Jack is having to deal with the trauma of losing his firstborn child on top of trying to keep a
grasp on his wife. With Jack s wife running off to California and his daughters offender on the loose,
Jack struggles with keeping a steady head. Jack copes with this trauma by seeking revenge to the
culprit Mr. Harvey. Jack takes time to move past this in his life but soon learns to hold his family
closer than ever before. We can all learn from what Sebold illustrates to us in jack s character about
dealing with trauma. A picture perfect family a husband an a wife with two girls and one boy. They
lived in the suburbs of Pennsylvania where the people were friendly. Anyone could see Jack s and
Susie s bond, they bonded over many things but the biggest had to be building the boats in the bottle.
All the kids were supposed to grow up in the same neighborhood going to the same school and live the
same life but all that changed when Susie never came home after school. What happen in the cornfield
disrupted everyone s way of life, nothing would ever be the same.
Jack had found a new passion passion for revenge and greed. Jack had known from early on ... Show

Some of these may be healthy and some may be unhealthy, which clearly for the most part Jack
Salmon s way was unhealthy. However, right or wrong each path eventually leads to a healthy place.
At least for those involved in Suzie s tragic story. As each character dealt with the tragic loss of life in
different ways, in the end they ended up reunited and able to move on and live their lives. As Suzie
described it, These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence. (Alice Sebold,The

Carrie Anne Pope Comes Home
Thank you for the opportunity to read the next chapter in your work, Carrie Anne Pope Comes Home.
I enjoyed the use of the small kid and her mother in the Greyhound bus as a real life image of what
Carrie Anne would love to do for her own child, Winnie. I thought that the paragraph starting, Carrie
Anne wanted to make her daughter sandwiches and cut up apples in perfect star shapes. (3) worked
well in particular. The reemergence of routine worked well when Carrie Anne comes home such as her
going through the back door as visitors only came through the front door as well as the arrangement of
the groceries on page 6 in the fridge which signals to her that Winnie is at home. Milk on the top shelf,
butter next to the cheese covered in butcher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On page 5, when Carrie Anne was in conversation with the cops in front of her family home, I can t
imagine her saying out loud that she was in rehab, especially in front of Mrs. Boadean, who she hadn t
seen in years and but was still effected by her meanness and with her carefulness in her recovery.
Within Carrie Anne and Winnie s conversation in the house, some interiority of how both Carrie Anne
and Winnie felt in the exchange would help add more to the situation and Winnie s character
development since Carrie Anne s departure. For example, on page 8, when Winnie asks why Carrie
Anne is crying, this is the first time she s heard Winnie s voice in a long time. There could be some
emotional response, whether externally or internally, or shock. Also, in that exchange, how did Winnie
seem to Carrie Anne in her physicality along with her responses? Also, within his conversation, Carrie
Anne seems so fluid in her speech when talking to Winnie that I didn t buy at the moment that she was
affected by the moment. This is a huge deal to her and all of the guilt and conflict that she has gone
through without Winnie. Some inner dialogue within the conversation along with it as well as some
slowing down in the pace would help make those more relatable to the moment. Good job and I look
forward to your next

Hawaii Culture Research Paper
Hawaii Culture
I chose Hawaiian culture because when people thing of Hawaii a lot of times we think hula skirts, hula
dancers, or the beach. I had this image of dancers and a tropical get away. I am interested in the
background of their culture and the different traditions that get Hawaii to where it is today. I have been
asking myself many questions such as: Who founded or first landed in Hawaii? Is there a specific
language spoken there? What is the true meaning behind hula dancers, leis, and some of their
clothing? My final question was how did these traditions start and are they still being carried out
today? The purpose of this essay is to evaluate the Hawaiian culture and form an appreciation for their

Hawaii is founded upon six main values, those being; 1. Ke Akua, Mana, 2. Lōkahi, 3. ʻOhana, 4.
Poʻokela, 5. Hoʻomau, 6. Koho ʻIa. The first one Ke Akua, Mana can most relate to the English word
Prayer, but this isn t the whole meaning completely. The whole meaning would be having a full divine
understanding of life and the harmony between man and nature. Lōkahi the second foundation value is
about unity and working together as one whole unit for the better of the society. The third value is
ʻOhana meaning family. Hawaiians think this is the most important of all the founding values. ʻOhana
is not just about immediate family, this means the relationship with their creator as well. Forth is
Poʻokela, this refers to excellence which is not only desirable for Hawaiians but also very important to
any Hawaiian. Second the last is Hoʻomau, this means growth and regrowth of generations to keep
family traditions still going. Hawaiians must continue to grow or cease to exist, thus they have chosen
to give breath to life. Last but not least is Koho ʻIa. Which was adopted at a later time. Koho meaning
chosen. This concept pertains to everyone having the choice even if it may not seem that

Pharmacist Career Goals
In selecting a career, every person follows certain drives, justifications, and guidelines. A variety of
factors influenced my choice of pharmacy as a career. Having observed countless drug drug and drug
body interactions, volunteering as a pharmacy technician and in different positions in healthcare, I was
able to see the impact pharmacists have on patient lives and the mutual love they have for their
patients. I was pleased to see the effect pharmacists have on the quality of care their patients receive.

As a research assistant, I am currently studying the drug thalidomide, which caused one of the darkest
episodes in the history of pharmaceutical research due to its teratogenic effects. Through my research I
am able to obtain a better understanding of the molecular targets of the drug through the use of
chimera and cytoscape, which are specific software platforms that incorporates network data
integration and extensive molecular modeling systems. Although I appreciate the new skill set that
working as a research assistant has provided, my current stint has confirmed my intent to become a
clinical pharmacist, where I can have patient centered interactions and formulate appropriate care
plans to solidify my position as a key member of the interdisciplinary team. Moreover, my
membership in the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program at Ithaca College, a program that focuses

backgrounds, and cultures. These attributes will prove to be invaluable as I pursue my goal of

A Utopian Society
A utopian society is amongst many things that we as humans strive towards. In an ideal world, a
society where everyone is treated equally and sin does not exist, is the definition of a perfect society.
However, what many people neglect to understand is that they are striving to reach a goal that is
nearly impossible to accomplish. A utopian society is nearly impossible to have because of power
imbalances, different values, and the existence of sin. All of which are a part of human nature, and
controlling the actions and feelings of humans cannot easily be done, especially without the use of
extensive technological devices.
The power imbalances in The Scarlet Letter exhibit examples of unequally. Inequality, as many of us
realize, is not a characteristic of a Utopian society. Throughout the novel, we observe many people
with titles such as Governor Bellingham and Minister Reverend Dimmesdale. Titles, such as these,
communicate to the audience their authoritative role in story. It also allows the readers to become
informed about the power imbalances that often occur within any society. Governor Bellingham and
Reverend Dimmesdale possess certain rights and powers that the puritan community does not have.
For example, the governor had the authority to put Hester Prynne in prison after she committed
adultery. Although, we do not know for certain which person gave orders to place Hester Prynne in
prison, it is appropriate to assume that it was someone with a lot of power and

Literary Devices Utilized in Thomas Foster s Book How to...
The only real way to truly understand a story is to understand all aspects of a story and their meanings.
The same goes for movies, as they are all just stories being acted out. In Thomas Foster s book, How
to Read Literature Like a Professor , Foster explains in detail the numerous ingredients of a story. He
discusses almost everything that can be found in any given piece of literature. The devices discussed
in Foster s book can be found in most movies as well, including in Quentin Tarantino s cult classic,
Pulp Fiction . This movie is a complicated tale that follows numerous characters involved in
intertwining stories. Tarantino utilizes many devices to make Pulp Fiction into an excellent film. In
this essay, I will demonstrate how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

which she found in Vincent s jacket pocket. In the end, Vincent asks Mia is the events of the evening
can stay between them and Mia agrees. The final outcome of Vincent s quest is that the two form a
friendship with trust and respect. This mini story is just one example of how quests are used in Pulp
Fiction . Archetypes or symbols are described in Foster s book as being easy to identify but almost
impossible to define. According to Foster, everyone wants a symbol to mean something incredibly
specific (Foster 97). In Pulp Fiction , the most prominent archetypes are the briefcase and the band
aid. Throughout the film, Marsellus Wallace wears a band aid on the back of his neck and seeks out a
briefcase which has been taken from him. The contents of the briefcase and the reason for the band aid
are never revealed throughout the movie. Whenever Marsellus does not have his briefcase, he is
shown with the band aid on the back of his neck and whenever he has his briefcase, the band aid is
gone. Anytime the briefcase is opened, the only thing seen is a bright golden light emanating from the
case. Each character who sees what is inside of the case appears enthralled and amazed with the
contents. A very popular theory about the meaning of the case and band aid is that perhaps the

The Journey Of A Trip
I took the plunge, stepping out of the known and falling into the unknown that is travel. I had never
left the breezy state of Ohio, but here I was, packed up and getting ready to board a flight to the
beautiful Hatteras Island. Hatteras was far, much farther away than I had ever been from my home. I
slept most of the plane ride in fear that I would be sick in front of everyone. Crammed in between a
large man who decided both armrest were his and a small elderly women who spent the entire flight
flipping through a book of pictures, I let my head lazily hang to one side and drifted off into the
darkness of my sleep. I was awoken by the same large man hacking up what seemed to be his lung,
pancreas, spine, and PhD into my face. I looked across the frail old lady out the window and took in
my current surroundings. Everything hit me at once, the beauty of the earth around me suddenly
became less blurry as I watched out my circular airplane window down at the sandy beaches of
Hatteras. I got off the flight, went into the air conditioned beach house, and unpacked my suitcase.
The white sand of the beaches warmed the soles of my feet as I stepped onto the dune down into the
slack. The glow of the now fading orange sun warmed my face, while the unfamiliar smell of
saltwater tickled my nose. I was on the beach for the first time and I was beyond anxious. My only
previous knowledge of the beach came for movies such as Jaws and Soul Surfer. To my dismay there
was not a cute sheriff

Olaudah Equiano Slavery
In the written eyewitness account The African Slave Trade by Olaudah Equiano, he illustrated the
horrible accounts of his experience as a young boy captured as a slave sent to the New World. He
conveyed his narrative to mostly Christian settlers about his astonishment and awe of the white men
and question slavery itself. Also, he illustrated much of the cruelty captured slaves experienced that
they would rather choose death over bondage. Thus, Equiano did this in order not only to inform
people of the immoral acts of slavery but also to inspire them to make a moral change.
First, Equiano illustrated a theme of awe and astonishment towards the white which is in equally
degree to the fear and apprehension he felt towards them. These sorts of astonishments are likened to
his horrid journey as if out of this world. Equiano, through his journey as he was captured as a sort of
out of the world experience. He stated, I was immediately handled, and tossed up to see if I were
sound... I was now persuaded that I had gotten into a world of bad spirit , which demonstrated the
shocking force of being trafficked into slavery. Moreover, Equiano stated everything about me was
magic which emphasized how from the point of captivity to slavery, Equiano s life was completely
altered. In addition, he was in surprised of the people, houses, and houses he saw when he arrived at ...

Free Will Scandal In Philosophy Analysis
For centuries, philosophers and scientists alike have debated the nature of consciousness, human
freedom, and moral responsibility. Quantum Mechanics (QM) would indicate that on the smallest,
most fundamental scale of the universe, indeterminism is logically true, and provides room for free
will theory in our universe. Alternatively, adequate determinism proposes that macroscopic events can
be statistically predicted with impressive precision, but that the unpredictability of microscopic events
has no noticeable effect on the macroscopic world. There are other subcategories of determinism and
indeterminism, all of which bring interesting perspectives on the nature of the reality, and all of which
have a large impact on moral responsibility. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, there are some philosophers who believe that our genes determine our future entirely,
and some philosophers that believe our actions are dictated by environmental conditioning (Doyle
2001, p. 147). These two perspectives are both faulty and inaccurate. Our genes, however, are only
hereditary units that determine the characteristics of our bodies. Although this may have some effect
on the way we act, most of the information stored in the brain is accumulated throughout life. This
does disqualify biological determinism alone as an explanation for our actions, although it can still be
treated as a contributing factor in a more complete theory of determinism. For example, in a free will
theory that uses O Connor s definition of free will, some biological genetic processes could explain
our primal, animalistic desires, that cause us to act out of character . The behavioral (environmental)
determinism perspective argues that the environment we are reared in has a massive effect on our
perspective on reality; thus, it can be used to predict the decisions we will make in a given
circumstance. This does not, however, prove that all of life is determined by causal chains, as is
posited by determinists, it simply bolsters the idea that nurture plays a large role in developing our
character. It provides no evidence to show that a certain childhood environment is somehow indicative
of the likelihood of certain specific decisions in a certain situation. Adequate determinism, arguably
the most rational of all deterministic schools of thought, is guided by statistical laws, and does not
claim to be able to predict everything perfectly. It only claims to predict things that have been
sufficiently experimented and explained by classical laws in the macroscopic world and, thus, does
not claim to explain issues presented by QM that are contradictory to

The case for VC firms is similar. General partners must convince some in regards to the affiliations
already said to place put into the store with the certification of tremendous returns (in the region of 5X
and 10X) in a particular time period (as a rule 10 years).
The VC firms should then go ahead to make clever investments so they can give the limited partners
their cash back... in addition to a benefit.
How do Venture Capital firms make money? The way Venture Capital funds make money are two
fold: by managements fee and carries (carried interest).
Management fees: administration charges are typically characterized as the cost of having your
benefits professionally managed . How does this convert into the Venture Capital industry? VC
capitals commonly pay a yearly administration charge to the reserve s administration organization, as
a type of salary and an approach to cover authoritative and funds expenses. Administration expenses
are normally figured on a level of the capital duties of the reserve, or around 2 to 2.5 per cent.
Carried premium or carry: share of the profit of an investment or investments fund that is paid to the
investment administrator in abundance of the sum that the director adds to the partnership. When an
investment is effective, a carry speaks to the offer of the profit that is paid to the fund supervisors.
Carried interesting in Venture Capital is typically 20 to 25 for each penny, implying

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Movies
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, spanned from 2001 2003, is a series of dramatic mythical movies based
on the fantasy novels The Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The
Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Peter Jackson s attention to detail and
graphic design enhanced the film and produced the mythical fantasies and wonders displayed in the
book series. His choice of music added dramatic effect that added intensity. The Lord of the Rings
trilogy s predominant theme is Fate. Fate is shown throughout the entire movie with a variety of
representations. It is very enthralling to see how the theme fate is incorporated into the film. The most
efficacious demonstration of Fate in the movies is seen in the unlikely trio of Frodo Baggins, Samwise
Gamgie and Gollum. Fate can be seen in from the moment Frodo receives the One Ring and his
unlikely strength while carrying the ring. Samwise, who was simply a local gardener, surprisingly
exhibited great courage and powerhouse in the quest to destroy the ring he was conclusively played an
extreme role in the destruction of the ring. Gollum, an out casted creature who lived solely for the One
Ring , became the most crucial being in the trio. It was Gollum who in the end was directly
responsible for the One Ring s demise. Frodo Baggins was an exact exemplification of how Fate is
portrayed in the Lord of the Rings movie series. The One Ring was unwillingly passed

Salomon, on the grounds that Mr. Salomon had abused the privileges of incorporation and limited

who had a mind and will of their own and were not mere puppets . The lord justices of appeal

The Second Treatise Of Government By Locke
One of Locke s most influential writings was his Second Treatise of Government . In this essay, Locke
discusses his ideal version of government, in which a social contract is exchanged between the
subjects and the government in power. In discussing this social contract, Locke provides a distinction
between express consent and tacit consent. In our discussion today, much of our time will be spent
discussing tacit consent. For our purposes, we will define tacit consent as a nonverbal, implied,
voluntary act of permission or agreement. In Locke s Second Treatise of Government , he asserts that
all individuals are equal and independent, so thus no one is superior over another. In governments
though, there is a fundamental hierarchical nature in which there are leaders, who are superior, than
say, the subjects. In order to fix this problem, Locke introduces the concept of Tacit Consent. Locke
sums up tacit consent by saying And to this I say, that every man, that hath any possessions, or
enjoyment, of any part of the dominions of any government, cloth thereby give his tacit consent, and
is as far forth obliged to obedience to the laws of that government, during such enjoyment, as any one
under it; Basically, if an individual is benefitting from resources given to them by the government,
then they have tacitly consented to also accept the burdens of that government and follow the laws set
forth by that government. So, have we as a nation, provided tacit consent to the US

Gilroy offers provocative commentary on the creation and consumption of [the] news in 21st century
America. This may be true, but Nightcrawler is a powerful reminder that the situation has only gotten
worse (Nightcrawler). It is known that the purpose of local television news is to inform people about
what is happening in their communities. For example, when Lou captured the homicide scene, Nina

words that would scare the audience and give more fame to her TV station. Nina says, hit it harder.

fight to be the first on the scene when a crime does occur; furthermore, in Lou s case, there will also
be fabrication in order to make the scene more dramatic ( Nightcrawler ). To succeed as a TV station,
news should be exclusive and unique. However, Nightcrawler has shown how news can fabricate a

The Secret Of Conspiracy Theory
However, Fenster fails to show the nature of politics in relation to culture that leads conspiracy
theories to arise in every historical event. This is due to his frustrating use of too much historical detail
on conspiracy theories in relation to culture (mass media and fictional writing). In contrast to Fenster
examination of conspiracy theory, Knight would critics his book, because of his excess use of data on

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Atomic Era By William Faulkner
The Atomic Era, spanning from 1945 through the 1960s, was a source of immense concern and fear
that faced both Americans and the entire world. During this tumultuous time in history, past
abominations such as the Depression and two deadly World Wars haunted Americans, while the Cold
War loomed as an imminent threat. Due to such prolonged suffering, the human spirit holding people
together the world over had fallen apart at the seams. Upon receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in
1950, William Faulkner delivered an acceptance speech in which he applies balanced sentences,
meaningful repetition, and potent hyperbole in order to call aspiring writers to abandon their fears and
encourage them to create work that will aid the world in midst of the current, volatile Atomic Age.
William Faulkner incorporates balanced sentence structure throughout his speech to draw connections
between the writer and their role within humanity. Faulkner begins his speech by addressing all
aspiring writers and linking himself to them. He states that these writers are already dedicated to the
same anguish and travail, among whom is already that one who will someday stand here where I am
standing. Faulkner immediately establishes a hopeful tone regarding the future of writers, writers who,
like Faulkner, understand that good writing requires the hard work of self sacrifice. Later on, when
discussing the work of authors who disregard the universal truths of writing, Faulkner once again
employs a balanced sentence. He claims such works are of defeats in which nobody loses anything of
value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or compassion . Defeat and victory
juxtaposed blurs the lines between the two and emphasizes the lack of meaning found within the
works of authors unwilling to share the problems of the human heart. The parallelism of victories
without hope, pity, and compassion marks any author s work lacking these essential elements as
destitute. Faulkner closes his speech with a final balanced statement, The poet s voice need not merely
be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail. Faulkner
expounds his central message that our writings must be the

Apple Inc, By Steven Wozniak Essay
Apple Inc. was founded by Steven Jobs and Steven Wozniak in 1976 by selling a designer personal
computer, called the Apple 1. Through technology Steven Jobs and Steven Wozniak were able to
introduce a mass produced personal computer called the Apple 2, which was the first color display.
With the Apple 2 being a success the partner upcoming revision of the product line was the Macintosh
(Mac), a user friendly product that allows users to interact with screen images rather than text
commands. The Macintosh (Mac) was introduced to the public in 1984 but failed to uphold as a
prospering product. Software used in the Mac was not upgraded and did not have the availability to
compete with the other leading electronic equipment such as PC and IBM, which had previously been
introduced in 1981. Although the Mac started out with initial success my analysis shows that the
software used in the Mac was under such tight restrictions that no outside software developers were
allowed to obtain any information on the software used. Apple s restrictions on the Apple Certified
Developers Program for software made it difficult for Mac to compete with other leading Microsoft,
which was the introduction of Window s 1.0. Unlike Apple, Microsoft made the software used
available to other computer companies. Apple did not sell or share software with rival companies.
Even with the introduction of Mac, Apple was able to set prices higher than the competitors. With the
introduction of Window s 1.0

An Example Of AAnd A Neurocognitive Disorders And How...
When studying abnormal psychology, we have learned about a variety of neurodevelopmental and
neurocognitive disorders and how they affect personality and behavior. In this paper I will discuss an
example of both a neurodevelopmental and a neurocognitive disorder. Within each of these disorders I
will provide behavioral criteria, incidence rates, causes and treatments options for each of the
disorders. The first disorder I am going to discuss is the neurodevelopmental disorder, Down
Syndrome. Down Syndrome has always been fascinating to be as to its causes and its effects on
people. Down Syndrome is congenital disorder resulting from a chromosome defect. Human s have 23
pairs of chromosomes giving us a total of 46 chromosomes. When a person has Down Syndrome, they
have 2 copies of chromosome 21, as opposed to the normal 1 copy of it. People who have Down
Syndrome still have 23 pairs of chromosomes but, with an additional copy of chromosome 21, they
have a total of 47 chromosomes. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and
causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome (What is Down Syndrome, 2012). People
who have from Down Syndrome will display both physical and cognitive symptoms ranging from
mild to sever depending on the person. Physical symptoms of people with Down Syndrome can
include; low muscle tone, small stature, flattened facial profile, wide hands with short fingers, and an
upward slant in eyes. Cognitive symptoms of Down

Date Rape Essay
Rape defined is forcing sexual intercourse upon someone without his or her consent. This isn t just a
girls problem, boys have to deal with this too. According to the American Psychological Association,
nearly one in ten girls and one in twenty boys say they have been raped or experienced some form of
sexual assault (Atlanta Journal, 1). Almost more than half of rape victims know their attacker; they
don t report it or tell anybody. In most date rape cases, the attacker and victim have known each other
for at least a year or even longer. Only about 10 percent of rapes are reported, less than that go to
court. According to data taken by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, one forcible rape is reported to
the police every six minutes, on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When you ve had one, you call for two, and then you don t care what you do (Ade, 12). Date rape is a
growing problem in the community but by educating people on drugs used for rape, the effects, and
treatment will help make the dating world a safer place.
There are three main drugs used in date rape, which include Rohypnol, Gamma Hydroxybutyerate,
and Ketamine. Rohypnol is a sedative with ten times the potency of Valium. They come in pill form,
which is white and round. Anybody could buy this drug on the street for fewer than five dollars. The
effects of this drug include drowsiness, dizziness, slurred speech, amnesia, muscle relaxation, loss of
control, and gastrointestinal disturbances that can last up to twelve or more hours. Street names for
this drug include Roofies, which is most commonly used, Rib, Roach 2, Roopies, Rope, R 2, Circles,
La Roche, or Mexican Valium. This drug leaves the body without a trace after so many hours after
ingesting it. Another drug used for date rape is Gamma Hydroxybutyerate. This drug is a central
nervous depressant that is a clear liquid with a metallic smell. It can also come in a white powder. This
drug can be sold for five dollars just for one capful. The effects of this drug has many of the same
effects as alcohol such as nausea, headache, vomiting, drowsiness, slurred speech, dizziness, reduced
breathing and heart rate, and involuntary muscle spasms. GHB completely

Simplicity By William Zinsser
William Zinsser is an American writer who wrote an informational guide to writing. He made a
decision to revise a specific chapter called Simplicity. In the year 1980, the first version of Simplicity
was created, then came 1998 followed up by 2006. In the first version, 1980, Zinsser created a long
and wordy paper. He used specific examples but included details that were unnecessary. This is ironic
because the paper is about how writers can write unnecessary words and phrases creating complicated
sentences. He was not inclusive of gender, naming men as writers and only using wives as examples
of distraction. This draft had a complete count of 20 paragraphs. The 1998 version had few changes
when compared to the 1980 s version. There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Paragraph 2 2006) He changed viscous language to clotted language. This makes sense, he used a
more commonly used word to this time period making it readable to a younger generation of readers
and writers. (Paragraph 2 2006) He took out on Christmas Eve or any other eve , this made sense
because it was an extra unneeded detail. The sentence made complete sense just as what father or
mother can put together a child s toy from the instructions on the box? . In paragraph 4 he changed
what was originally the president of a major university in versions from 1980 and 98 to the president
of my university in the 2006 version, making a personal connection with the reader. (Paragraph 8
2006) He completely redid the paragraph. In the 1980 and 1994 version, the 8th paragraph was
completely unneeded and included a story that seemed unrelated to the topic of writing. It started as I
love to be alone . The 2006 version of this paragraph wasn t completely off topic from the original. I
still believe this paragraph isn t needed, even with the shortening. With the 2006 version he has taken
out the he s and switched to they . This allows women to feel included, making it more likely for a
female to enjoy the writing. It felt noninclusive in the first two versions. In the newest version
(paragraph 10) he included devices relevant to that time period. Instead of saying he, he said a man or
woman could be distracted by many forces

Assembly Line and Line Workers
JIELIANG PHONE HOME CASE STUDY

Jieliang (DL) is a line worker at Precision Electro Tech s Dongguan, China manufacturing plant.
During a plant walk through, Marty Cole (OEM Global Team) witnessed Jieliang being publicly
disciplined in front of her fellow line workers for not following Total Quality Control (TQC)
procedures and using her own method.
ANALYSIS
Precision Electro Tech is a large contract manufacturer (CM) that produces products (i.e., cell phones)
for another company or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). In the case of complex assembly
tasks, if those tasks can be broken down into simple unit manufacturing steps that can be completely

Although her rationale was not explicitly stated, several factors were in play. Jieliang was trained that
way and trusted her fellow factory workers and believed they were capable hard workers with
ambition and drive (Shih, et al., 2009). She knew (perhaps subconsciously) that the TQC shortcut was
more efficient and believed that it was the prudent course of action. Additionally, there was a level of
enabling and complicity from the floor supervisors who believed in the old adage, one eye open and
one eye closed.
Jieliang s motivation and intent is difficult to know for sure; especially given how she and her fellow
workers strived to get the job done quicker, in part to have some computer play time and flash card
study time.
There are three players involved in this situation and each represents a role and cultural
differentiation: Marty Cole, OEM American, Yellow Hat, Supervisor Chinese, and Jieliang, DL
Chinese. Each of these players possesses their unique personality and VABEs. Marty Cole s
observation was alarming due to his witness of public reprimand by the Yellow Hat toward Jieliang,
DL. The Yellow Hat is a position of authority and Jieliang is a line worker in a subordinate role at the
manufacturing plant. The expectation of protocol for line workers is for them to follow the procedures
to the letter with no deviation or suffer the consequences. Thus, when

The Emergence Of The Film Industry
The emergence of the film industry was a momentous occasion for mass entertainment, and world
culture in general. For the first time in human history, visual experience could be shared and most
importantly sold to the general public. Cinema changed society as much as society influenced cinema.
Paramount amidst this radical change in entertainment was the American film industry: Hollywood.
The factors that contributed to Hollywood s socio economic and cultural influence around the globe
deeply relate to the socioeconomic and political situation of the world during the early 20th century. In
this essay, I will attempt to identify some of the issues that affected and were affected by the rise of the
film industry in the United States.

Hollywood was quick to capitalize on the popular appeal of particular actors, by publicizing their stars
as a certain type. This phenomenon gave rise to the typecasting of popular actors into the same role. In
this case, film only followed the previous example of traditional theater, where the star power of
famous actors would carry a production. The familiarity of audiences with actors contributed to the
popularity of Hollywood films both home and overseas.
First and foremost, Hollywood operated like the big businesses created at the beginning of the 20th
century. Just as Henry Ford revolutionized the car industry by mass producing the Model T, the studio
system perfected the formula for massive hits. After a brief period of experimentation, Hollywood
figured out the elements that constituted an audience favorite; they then proceeded to extract as much
value as possible before audiences got exhausted of the repetitiveness. It must be noted that
Hollywood did not offer a plethora of identical pictures, but a model which could be modified by
directors, actors, and especially during this period producers. What the standardization of narrative did
produce, however, was a set of pre formed expectations that audiences carried to the movie theater.
Any deviation from those norms triggered a certain disappointment among the movie going public or
at least that was the

Scarlet Letter Essay On Puritan Society
H.L Mencken defines Puritanism as the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy. These
words address the Puritan s attitude regarding strict and unrelenting societal standards. Modern society
views Puritanism with a negative connotation; Puritanism is often used as a synonym for words such
as: judgemental, critical and disapproving. While modern American society has grown and changed,
our Puritanical roots from the 1600 s remain. Our society can be condescending, hypocritical and
relishes in the ignominy of others. In Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel, The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne
discusses the harsh reality of living within the Puritan communities. The Scarlet Letter follows the
journey of a lonely single mother, who falls victim to sin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main character, Hester Prynne, is a young woman who commits adultery and gives birth to an
illegitimate child. As a repercussion, the Puritan community, that Hester calls home, shuns and labels
her as a sinful outcast. While modern society considers adultery is more of a personal issue than a
broken law, people are still critiqued for specific behaviors and actions, similarly to the way Hester
was judged in the 1600 s. Modern American culture has been affected by outdated Puritan values, and
has caused society to become an echo of the Puritan community of 1692. While Puritans may have
publically shamed others on scaffolds as a crude punishment, Americans reach a broader audience
with the help of technological advances and social media. But, technology has also allowed our nation
s Puritan roots to be prominently displayed online. Social media platforms are often the most popular
choice when it comes to bringing light to the ignominy of others. With the option of hiding behind a
screen, people often lose touch with human empathy and do not hesitate to lash out at others; this is
shown in the Justine Sacco twitter incident of 2013. In the New York Times magazine, Jon Ronson
educates his audience about how quickly people chose to harass

Satire In The Princess Bride By William Goldman
Satire Within The Princess Bride
In literature, satire is the use of irony, humour and exaggeration to critique and draw attention to
societal shortcomings with the hope of bringing on improvement. The Princess Bride, written by
William Goldman, uses satire to criticize rigid fairy tale conventions. Posing as a classic tale of true
love and high adventure , The Princess Bride portrays greatly exaggerated characters to mock the
common fairy tale archetypes. Similarly, it utilizes irony to diverge from the ordinary storybook
plotline. William Goldman s The Princess Bride is a satire that highlights the absurd portrayals of
which fairy tale characters and events and the confined framework they are built on.

These unexpected happenings destroy the unrealistic ideas within classical fairy tales making The
Princess Bride a better reflection of real life. Through Goldman s narration, he points out the
expectations one has for a fairy tale to follow a certain plotline. Near the end of the story, before
Westley dies in the Machine at the hands of Count Rugen, the narration interrupts the story with young
Goldman fighting with his father. The father does not want to continue the story, but due to his son s
persistence, he reluctantly explains that Westley is killed. Young Goldman is extremely upset and
begins crying as he can hardly believe that Westley, Buttercup s true love, dies. He seems even more
traumatized after learning that Prince Humperdinck, the villain of the story, survives or wins (282).
Young Goldman is clearly uncomfortable with the idea of the hero losing to the villain and represents
most readers who will also recognize the outcome as the opposite of what one expected. These plot
twists occur again at the end of the book. In the conclusion, Buttercup, Westley, Inigo and Fezzik
manage to escape Prince Humperdinck s army, astride four white stallions and are fleeing the
kingdom. However, instead of the expected happily ever after , the ending holds much uncertainty.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Plasmin
Plasmin is the most well studied and promising of the vitreolytic agents. It is a nonspecific serine
protease that mediates fibrinolysis and is capable of degrading several vitreous macromolecules
directly and indirectly.185 In a landmark paper published in 1993, Verstraeten and colleagues induced
PVD in rabbit eyes by intravitreal injection of this enzyme followed by vitrectomy.165 In 1999,
Hikichi and co workers166 confirmed complete PVD after injection of 1U plasmin and 0.5 ml SF6 gas

First, the plasminogen is isolated from human plasma by affinity chromatography. Then it is
concentrated and activated by the addition of streptokinase. Finally, it is sterilized by filtration.
Although the use of plasmin obtained by chromatography has been found to be safe and efficient, the
production of the plasmin enzyme is technically and logistically difficult and expensive. Hence, other
alternative method has been proposed to facilitate the production of the APE for vitreoretinal surgery;
1 hour before surgery a sample of the patient s blood is centrifuged and incubated with streptokinase.
Using this method, Rizzo and coauthors reported the presence of PVD in 85% of the eyes which
received the APE solution intravitreally.193 Pharmacologic vitreolysis by intravitreal injection of APE
has been proposed by several researchers. In a pilot study, Williams et al.168 assessed the use of the
APE as an adjuvant to vitreous surgery in eyes with advanced diabetic retinopathy. A beneficial
surgical result was also reported in cases of pediatric macular194 and idiopathic macular holes in
adults.195 There is evidence of a favorable effect of plasmin on the ultrastructure of the ILL and its
separation from the vitreous, as reported by Asami et al.169 However, the efficacy and toxicity of
intravitreal APE is dosedependent. Intravitreal injection of 0.4 IU of plasmin has been

in a hybrid format before moving to a distance format. The teachers received online training sessions
with the purpose to share their successes and challenges to improve their understanding, and ability to
implement recommended instruction practices.
In my project, the professional development will include offering training to both instructors and
bilingual adult students. I can talk with property about the sessions since I have been helping as

Analysis Of Francois Truffaut s The 400 Blows ( 1959 )...
The French New Wave, or Nouvelle Vague, is among the most revolutionary film eras in the history of
cinema. Spurred as a result of major shifts in economic, social and technological norms within post
WW11 France, the New Wave conceived a renewed mode of expression across various creative
industries. Francois Truffaut s The 400 Blows (1959) and Jean Luc Godard s Breathless (1960) are
two films, which despite major disparities, would go on to exemplify integral characteristics of the
movement in the following years. Perhaps, the best way to truly appreciate the fervor of New Wave
cinema is to examine the context of its inception. Both the stylistic and thematic qualities of French
New Wave works directly reflect the implicit values, virtues and vices possessed by the emerging
youth culture of the late 1950s, which consequently posed a fundamental challenge to the institutions,
ideas and attitudes of the past.
To fully comprehend why and how this cinematic motion took place, it is valuable here to establish
the wider social climate of France at the time, and the active forces which heavily shaped New Wave
cinema. Between the years of 1945 and 1975, France would undergo thirty glorious years of economic
growth, urbanization, and a considerable baby boom, all of which came to expand and radically alter
the parameters of French culture (Haine 33). Beneath the surface affluence however, France was in a
state of deep self evaluation and consciousness. Following WW11, the

Differences Between Religion And Catholicism
1.0 Framing:
1.1 Hypothesis
It is hypothesised that although a number of differences, the similarities between Indigenous
Spirituality and Catholicism marriage rituals are due, primarily to the religions views regarding what
happens to the soul after the uniting of two different beings.
1.2 Purpose of the Rituals
The agreement between man and woman, also know as marriage, is a universal act seen throughout all
of humanity. Marriage allows for legal contract between spouses to be sealed and establish the rights
of each other. This ceremony dates back into Biblical times, and is shown right throughout the history
of both, Catholicism and Indigenous Spirituality.
From within Judaism, Catholicism originated. This was believed to have happened after the death and
resurrection of Jesus. As several of the beliefs and traditions were carried on from Judaism, it could be
assumed that Catholic and Jewish wedding ceremonies are very similar.
This ethnographic study will outline and examine the wedding ceremonies from within Catholicism
and Judaism, showing the similarities and differences between the two religions, having the main
focal point the origins and traditions of the two religions.

writing style matched up to all of the letters and poems that BTK had sent to authorities and local
newspapers. The payphone that he used to report a murder was only a few blocks away from his job at
the time, which was at ADT. Many different pieces of evidence led back to Wichita State University,
which he had attended in the 1970s. Photocopies had been made on campus, poems were similar to a
song taught by one of the professors at the university, and BTK even asked Kevin Bright, the man
who was shot and managed to survive, if he had seen him at the university. Rader was neighbors with
one of his victims. He sent trophies to police along with his letters. Rader had many different jobs
throughout the thirty years in which he was acting as BTK, and he worked for some of the same
companies as his

Obesity Is An Obesity Epidemic Exists
To understand whether or not an obesity epidemic exists, one has to define obesity and determine what
suggests an epidemic. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) (2015), obesity means
having too much body fat which can occur when one has more caloric intake than one uses, which is
different for each person. In comparison, overweight means weighing too much and may result from
bone, fat, muscle and body water (NIH, 2015). In both obesity and overweight, an individual s weight
is considered greater than what may be considered healthy in relation to their height (NIH, 2015).
Contributing factors that may affect weight are eating high fat goods, overeating, genetics, or not
being physically active (Akabas, Lederman, Moore, 2012; NIH, 2015). To determine what is
considered a healthy weight, a body mass index (BMI) is used to measure an individual s height and
weight and estimates body fat as a determinant of potential risks for diseases (Akabas, Lederman,
Moore, 2012; Morrill Chinn, 2004). BMI less than 18.5 is recognized as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is
within normal weight and is categorized as a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, 30 to 34.9 is
mild obesity, 35 to 39.9 is moderate obesity, and 40 and over is severe obesity (Akabas, Lederman,
Moore, 2012; Jones, 2006; NIH, 2015; Reville, 2006). Currently, one in three adults in the United
States are obese, increasing potential for health risks such as heart disease, diabetes high blood
pressure

Universal Political System During The Cold War
For over four decades the citizens of the United States focused their attention to the seemingly
interminable tension that existed between American and the Soviet Union. Fear of the USSR and the
communist regime tormented Americans, who poured their energy into promoting and safeguarding
the democratic values they had always been accustomed to. As the Cold War steadily subsided, the
United States and the Soviet Union came together to repair the damage they had inflicted on one
another since the end of the Second World War. With the Cold War in the past, the field of
International Relations shifted its focus to a multitude of new issues that were on the rise. Issues that
were not necessarily relevant during the Cold War, but have dominated global politics in recent years,
are defined under the concept of human security. In order to accurately assess the universal political
system in a post Cold War world, a more expansive definition of security is required.
The emergence of the multi faceted concept of human security can be attributed to the collapse of the
bi polar system and the accelerated pace of globalization. As the Cold War diminished, the United
States and the USSR agreed that it was not in their best interest to obliterate one another after all. As
the Soviet Union disintegrated with nationalist regimes and the economic policies under leader
Mikhail Gorbachev, the United States was left to serve as the global hegemony. With the focus shifted
to maintaining peaceful

Social Control In Hedda Gabler
Henrik Isben s Hedda Gabler is a problem play that deals with several social conflicts that a newlywed
woman experiences when we arrives back to her home town from her honeymoon. As the daughter of
General Gabler, Hedda Gabler has been born into and grown accustom to being at the top of her town
s social hierarchy. Because of Hedda s social status and undeniable beauty she has the ability to
control and manipulate those around her but to a certain extent. The time the play was set in, women
did not have a lot of freedom to do anything outside of getting married, having children and attending
to the house. Hedda did not fit this mould that was created for women of that time. She was not very
maternal individual and reactive negatively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hedda desperately needs to believe that the expectations of her society do not control ever person who
dwells within it. Eilert Løvborg serves as living proof to Hedda that a person can live their live the
way they choose to without conforming to the norms of society and she is attracted to as well as
secretly envies him for that eminence. Hedda sits at the top of the social ladder she has a long way
down if she slips up and falls below what is socially accepted and expected from her. And for that
reason she is deathly afraid of a scandal. Eilert Løvborg on the other hand, had the courage to live life
after his own mind (Ibsen 298). He led a life that was considered less than respectable in the eyes of
his community, consisting of alcohol abuse and scandalous visits to the towns women s boudoirs.
Eilert Løvborg had little self control over his actions once he started drinking and would go on binges
for days at a time. To Hedda, Eilert Løvborg was daring brave because he was able to do the very
thing that she was very afraid of which was to live life carefree from the judgments of her society. She
also enjoyed the power and control she possessed over him. When Eilert Løvborg tells her the truth
about his manuscript he confesses that Thea Elvsted has inspired him to lead nobler lifestyle: I ve lost
all desire for that [old] kind of lifestyle. I don t want to start it again, not now. It s the courage and
daring life that s what she s broken in me

Finding A Balance

FINDING A BALANCE
Finding a Balance: Europa Universalis IV
In many ways, Europa Universalis 4 is less of a game about history, and more of a game about
understanding history. In this game, you play as any nation from 1444 until 1821, from the dawn of
the fall of the Western Roman Empire until the death of Napoleon, and your goals as a state are only
limited by your imagination and skill. Accomplishing a world conquest is completely within the realm
of possibility for a skilled player, or you could be the type of player who simply wants to form
Germany or unite the Holy Roman Empire.
The player can begin the game at any date during the period which the game takes place, with the map
of the world being representative of the actual world at that time, but players will often find that their
games do not come close to this accuracy even when the player has nothing to do with it. Because
every nation is played by an AI just as long as you have been playing your nation, sometimes variation
happens. From personal experience, I have seen
Venice control almost all of Greece when I was playing an Asian country. It is this variation which
gives the game excitement; if I knew how the game would progress every single time, I would play
one game and never play again.
On one hand, you have a serious, historical simulation of the world and how it progressed, and on the
other hand you have a game where Ulm, a German minor, can take over the entire European continent
within several hundred

Cdna Cloning And Sequence Analysis Essay
3. Results
3.1 cDNA cloning and sequence analysis
In this study, we cloned the rabbit NMU, NUM R1 and NMU R2 cDNA fragments using RT PCR.
Specific fragments were amplified and target gene fragment length was 443, 366 and 203 bp,
respectively (Fig.1 A, B and C), consistent with the expected size of the fragment, and clear bands.
These fragments were confirmed by sequencing, and the NMU, NMU R1 and NMU R2 sequences
were submitted to GenBank (GenBank IDs: KP276160.1, KM 236787.1 and KM 236788.1). NCBI
database map views program analysis showed that The rabbit NMU, NMU R1 and NMU R2 gene
were located at chromosome 2, 3 and 1 respectively.
The sequence analysis showed that rabbit NMU gene exhibited an open reading frame (ORF) of 564
nucleotides encoding 188 amino acids residues, while NMU R1 gene included 360 nucleotides
encoding 120 amino acids residues, and NMU R2 gene included 288 nucleotides encoding 96 amino
acids residues. The rabbit NMU, NMU R1 and NMU R2 genes sequences were 84%, 84% and 87%
identical to those of the corresponding human homologues, respectively. The homology of the
nucleotide and amino acid sequences are compared in Table (2, 3 and 4). Multiple alignment analysis
of the amino acid sequences indicated that the rabbit NMU, NMU R1 and NMU R2 were relatively
conserved in human, mouse, cow, pig, rat and sheep (Fig. 2, 3 and 4). Phylogenetic analysis revealed
that the NMU coding sequences are highly conserved between the related species (Fig. 5).

Essay on Emily Bronte s Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights: A Great Romantic Novel
The Romantic Period was a very imaginative and creative period of thinking. The literature produced
during this period reflected this wild and free spirited imagination. The works dismissed the
Enlightenment thinkers in their claims of Reason, progress, and universal truths (Damrosch, 1317).
Instead, these writers explored superstitions and had a renewed sense of passion for the wild, the
unfamiliar, the irregular, and the irrational (Damrosch, 1317). Other common elements of the writing
during this period were the returned interest of gothic romance elements, a fascination of exploring the
inner world of the mind and the unconscious into its dark side, an interest in emotional ... Show more

This is not even the complete list of Romantic elements found within the books borders. To sum up
the elements, one needs to include all of the conflicts found in the novel, both the internal and external
conflicts. These include things like Nature vs. Civilization, the Wild vs. the Tame, the Deep and
Elemental vs. the Superficial and Impermanent, and Natural Impulses vs. Artificial Restraint
(Agatucci, 4).
All of these different elements are combined into this one novel, showing the avant garde genius of
Emily Bronte. She was a very creative innovator full of an incredibly gifted imagination and
otherworldy sense for the supernatural ghosts of the past and the hidden personal demons found deep
in the unconscious mind, which she displays in the character of Heathcliff especially.
Heathcliff starts out in the story as the most outcast of the outcast. He is picked up and adopted from
the streets of Liverpool by the head of the household on one of his journeys to town he takes every
once in a while. He starts out as this ugly and hideous creature who is ridiculed and beaten by the
other kids in the house. He finds one true playmate and friend in the rambunctious Cathy, who is a free
spirit that falls in love with his mysterious character. This relationship becomes forbidden however
when the father dies and the oldest son takes over the household. Heathcliff is banished from the
house eventually,

  • 2. The Lovely Bones Character Analysis Imagine having a perfect family a wife and three kids also after a short 13 years having your eldest child viciously torn away from you, in the story the lovely bones this is exactly what happened to Jack salmon. Jack is having to deal with the trauma of losing his firstborn child on top of trying to keep a grasp on his wife. With Jack s wife running off to California and his daughters offender on the loose, Jack struggles with keeping a steady head. Jack copes with this trauma by seeking revenge to the culprit Mr. Harvey. Jack takes time to move past this in his life but soon learns to hold his family closer than ever before. We can all learn from what Sebold illustrates to us in jack s character about dealing with trauma. A picture perfect family a husband an a wife with two girls and one boy. They lived in the suburbs of Pennsylvania where the people were friendly. Anyone could see Jack s and Susie s bond, they bonded over many things but the biggest had to be building the boats in the bottle. All the kids were supposed to grow up in the same neighborhood going to the same school and live the same life but all that changed when Susie never came home after school. What happen in the cornfield disrupted everyone s way of life, nothing would ever be the same. Jack had found a new passion passion for revenge and greed. Jack had known from early on ... However, right or wrong each path eventually leads to a healthy place. At least for those involved in Suzie s tragic story. As each character dealt with the tragic loss of life in different ways, in the end they ended up reunited and able to move on and live their lives. As Suzie described it, These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence. (Alice Sebold,The Lovely Bones, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Carrie Anne Pope Comes Home Thank you for the opportunity to read the next chapter in your work, Carrie Anne Pope Comes Home. I enjoyed the use of the small kid and her mother in the Greyhound bus as a real life image of what Carrie Anne would love to do for her own child, Winnie. I thought that the paragraph starting, Carrie Anne wanted to make her daughter sandwiches and cut up apples in perfect star shapes. (3) worked well in particular. The reemergence of routine worked well when Carrie Anne comes home such as her going through the back door as visitors only came through the front door as well as the arrangement of the groceries on page 6 in the fridge which signals to her that Winnie is at home. Milk on the top shelf, butter next to the cheese covered in butcher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On page 5, when Carrie Anne was in conversation with the cops in front of her family home, I can t imagine her saying out loud that she was in rehab, especially in front of Mrs. Boadean, who she hadn t seen in years and but was still effected by her meanness and with her carefulness in her recovery. Within Carrie Anne and Winnie s conversation in the house, some interiority of how both Carrie Anne and Winnie felt in the exchange would help add more to the situation and Winnie s character development since Carrie Anne s departure. For example, on page 8, when Winnie asks why Carrie Anne is crying, this is the first time she s heard Winnie s voice in a long time. There could be some emotional response, whether externally or internally, or shock. Also, in that exchange, how did Winnie seem to Carrie Anne in her physicality along with her responses? Also, within his conversation, Carrie Anne seems so fluid in her speech when talking to Winnie that I didn t buy at the moment that she was affected by the moment. This is a huge deal to her and all of the guilt and conflict that she has gone through without Winnie. Some inner dialogue within the conversation along with it as well as some slowing down in the pace would help make those more relatable to the moment. Good job and I look forward to your next ... • 5. Hawaii Culture Research Paper Hawaii Culture I chose Hawaiian culture because when people thing of Hawaii a lot of times we think hula skirts, hula dancers, or the beach. I had this image of dancers and a tropical get away. I am interested in the background of their culture and the different traditions that get Hawaii to where it is today. I have been asking myself many questions such as: Who founded or first landed in Hawaii? Is there a specific language spoken there? What is the true meaning behind hula dancers, leis, and some of their clothing? My final question was how did these traditions start and are they still being carried out today? The purpose of this essay is to evaluate the Hawaiian culture and form an appreciation for their customs, values, celebration, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hawaii is founded upon six main values, those being; 1. Ke Akua, Mana, 2. Lōkahi, 3. ʻOhana, 4. Poʻokela, 5. Hoʻomau, 6. Koho ʻIa. The first one Ke Akua, Mana can most relate to the English word Prayer, but this isn t the whole meaning completely. The whole meaning would be having a full divine understanding of life and the harmony between man and nature. Lōkahi the second foundation value is about unity and working together as one whole unit for the better of the society. The third value is ʻOhana meaning family. Hawaiians think this is the most important of all the founding values. ʻOhana is not just about immediate family, this means the relationship with their creator as well. Forth is Poʻokela, this refers to excellence which is not only desirable for Hawaiians but also very important to any Hawaiian. Second the last is Hoʻomau, this means growth and regrowth of generations to keep family traditions still going. Hawaiians must continue to grow or cease to exist, thus they have chosen to give breath to life. Last but not least is Koho ʻIa. Which was adopted at a later time. Koho meaning chosen. As a research assistant, I am currently studying the drug thalidomide, which caused one of the darkest episodes in the history of pharmaceutical research due to its teratogenic effects. Although I appreciate the new skill set that working as a research assistant has provided, my current stint has confirmed my intent to become a clinical pharmacist, where I can have patient centered interactions and formulate appropriate care plans to solidify my position as a key member of the interdisciplinary team. Moreover, my membership in the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program at Ithaca College, a program that focuses on the issues of civic education, and my position as a teaching assistant in the chemistry department, have allowed me to develop the maturity and insight to interact with people of different ages, backgrounds, and cultures. • 7. A Utopian Society A utopian society is amongst many things that we as humans strive towards. In an ideal world, a society where everyone is treated equally and sin does not exist, is the definition of a perfect society. However, what many people neglect to understand is that they are striving to reach a goal that is nearly impossible to accomplish. A utopian society is nearly impossible to have because of power imbalances, different values, and the existence of sin. All of which are a part of human nature, and controlling the actions and feelings of humans cannot easily be done, especially without the use of extensive technological devices. The power imbalances in The Scarlet Letter exhibit examples of unequally. Inequality, as many of us realize, is not a characteristic of a Utopian society. Throughout the novel, we observe many people with titles such as Governor Bellingham and Minister Reverend Dimmesdale. Titles, such as these, communicate to the audience their authoritative role in story. It also allows the readers to become informed about the power imbalances that often occur within any society. Governor Bellingham and Reverend Dimmesdale possess certain rights and powers that the puritan community does not have. For example, the governor had the authority to put Hester Prynne in prison after she committed adultery. Although, we do not know for certain which person gave orders to place Hester Prynne in prison, it is appropriate to assume that it was someone with a lot of power and ... • 8. Literary Devices Utilized in Thomas Foster s Book How to... The only real way to truly understand a story is to understand all aspects of a story and their meanings. The same goes for movies, as they are all just stories being acted out. In Thomas Foster s book, How to Read Literature Like a Professor , Foster explains in detail the numerous ingredients of a story. He discusses almost everything that can be found in any given piece of literature. The devices discussed in Foster s book can be found in most movies as well, including in Quentin Tarantino s cult classic, Pulp Fiction . This movie is a complicated tale that follows numerous characters involved in intertwining stories. Tarantino utilizes many devices to make Pulp Fiction into an excellent film. In this essay, I will demonstrate how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His reason to go there is that he was asked by his boss. In the end, Vincent asks Mia is the events of the evening can stay between them and Mia agrees. The final outcome of Vincent s quest is that the two form a friendship with trust and respect. This mini story is just one example of how quests are used in Pulp Fiction . Archetypes or symbols are described in Foster s book as being easy to identify but almost impossible to define. According to Foster, everyone wants a symbol to mean something incredibly specific (Foster 97). In Pulp Fiction , the most prominent archetypes are the briefcase and the band aid. Throughout the film, Marsellus Wallace wears a band aid on the back of his neck and seeks out a briefcase which has been taken from him. The contents of the briefcase and the reason for the band aid are never revealed throughout the movie. Whenever Marsellus does not have his briefcase, he is shown with the band aid on the back of his neck and whenever he has his briefcase, the band aid is gone. Anytime the briefcase is opened, the only thing seen is a bright golden light emanating from the case. Each character who sees what is inside of the case appears enthralled and amazed with the contents. A very popular theory about the meaning of the case and band aid is that perhaps the ... • 9. The Journey Of A Trip I took the plunge, stepping out of the known and falling into the unknown that is travel. I had never left the breezy state of Ohio, but here I was, packed up and getting ready to board a flight to the beautiful Hatteras Island. Hatteras was far, much farther away than I had ever been from my home. I slept most of the plane ride in fear that I would be sick in front of everyone. Crammed in between a large man who decided both armrest were his and a small elderly women who spent the entire flight flipping through a book of pictures, I let my head lazily hang to one side and drifted off into the darkness of my sleep. I was awoken by the same large man hacking up what seemed to be his lung, pancreas, spine, and PhD into my face. I looked across the frail old lady out the window and took in my current surroundings. Everything hit me at once, the beauty of the earth around me suddenly became less blurry as I watched out my circular airplane window down at the sandy beaches of Hatteras. I got off the flight, went into the air conditioned beach house, and unpacked my suitcase. The white sand of the beaches warmed the soles of my feet as I stepped onto the dune down into the slack. The glow of the now fading orange sun warmed my face, while the unfamiliar smell of saltwater tickled my nose. I was on the beach for the first time and I was beyond anxious. My only previous knowledge of the beach came for movies such as Jaws and Soul Surfer. To my dismay there was not a cute sheriff ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Olaudah Equiano Slavery In the written eyewitness account The African Slave Trade by Olaudah Equiano, he illustrated the horrible accounts of his experience as a young boy captured as a slave sent to the New World. He conveyed his narrative to mostly Christian settlers about his astonishment and awe of the white men and question slavery itself. Also, he illustrated much of the cruelty captured slaves experienced that they would rather choose death over bondage. Thus, Equiano did this in order not only to inform people of the immoral acts of slavery but also to inspire them to make a moral change. First, Equiano illustrated a theme of awe and astonishment towards the white which is in equally degree to the fear and apprehension he felt towards them. These sorts of astonishments are likened to his horrid journey as if out of this world. Equiano, through his journey as he was captured as a sort of out of the world experience. He stated, I was immediately handled, and tossed up to see if I were sound... I was now persuaded that I had gotten into a world of bad spirit , which demonstrated the shocking force of being trafficked into slavery. • 11. Free Will Scandal In Philosophy Analysis For centuries, philosophers and scientists alike have debated the nature of consciousness, human freedom, and moral responsibility. Quantum Mechanics (QM) would indicate that on the smallest, most fundamental scale of the universe, indeterminism is logically true, and provides room for free will theory in our universe. Alternatively, adequate determinism proposes that macroscopic events can be statistically predicted with impressive precision, but that the unpredictability of microscopic events has no noticeable effect on the macroscopic world. There are other subcategories of determinism and indeterminism, all of which bring interesting perspectives on the nature of the reality, and all of which have a large impact on moral responsibility. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, there are some philosophers who believe that our genes determine our future entirely, and some philosophers that believe our actions are dictated by environmental conditioning (Doyle 2001, p. 147). These two perspectives are both faulty and inaccurate. Our genes, however, are only hereditary units that determine the characteristics of our bodies. Although this may have some effect on the way we act, most of the information stored in the brain is accumulated throughout life. This does disqualify biological determinism alone as an explanation for our actions, although it can still be treated as a contributing factor in a more complete theory of determinism. For example, in a free will theory that uses O Connor s definition of free will, some biological genetic processes could explain our primal, animalistic desires, that cause us to act out of character . The behavioral (environmental) determinism perspective argues that the environment we are reared in has a massive effect on our perspective on reality; thus, it can be used to predict the decisions we will make in a given circumstance. This does not, however, prove that all of life is determined by causal chains, as is posited by determinists, it simply bolsters the idea that nurture plays a large role in developing our character. It provides no evidence to show that a certain childhood environment is somehow indicative of the likelihood of certain specific decisions in a certain situation. Adequate determinism, arguably the most rational of all deterministic schools of thought, is guided by statistical laws, and does not claim to be able to predict everything perfectly. It only claims to predict things that have been sufficiently experimented and explained by classical laws in the macroscopic world and, thus, does not claim to explain issues presented by QM that are contradictory to ... The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Movies The Lord of the Rings trilogy, spanned from 2001 2003, is a series of dramatic mythical movies based on the fantasy novels The Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Peter Jackson s attention to detail and graphic design enhanced the film and produced the mythical fantasies and wonders displayed in the book series. His choice of music added dramatic effect that added intensity. The Lord of the Rings trilogy s predominant theme is Fate. Fate is shown throughout the entire movie with a variety of representations. It is very enthralling to see how the theme fate is incorporated into the film. The most efficacious demonstration of Fate in the movies is seen in the unlikely trio of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgie and Gollum. Fate can be seen in from the moment Frodo receives the One Ring and his unlikely strength while carrying the ring. Samwise, who was simply a local gardener, surprisingly exhibited great courage and powerhouse in the quest to destroy the ring he was conclusively played an extreme role in the destruction of the ring. Gollum, an out casted creature who lived solely for the One Ring , became the most crucial being in the trio. It was Gollum who in the end was directly responsible for the One Ring s demise. • 16. The Second Treatise Of Government By Locke One of Locke s most influential writings was his Second Treatise of Government . In this essay, Locke discusses his ideal version of government, in which a social contract is exchanged between the subjects and the government in power. In discussing this social contract, Locke provides a distinction between express consent and tacit consent. In our discussion today, much of our time will be spent discussing tacit consent. For our purposes, we will define tacit consent as a nonverbal, implied, voluntary act of permission or agreement. In Locke s Second Treatise of Government , he asserts that all individuals are equal and independent, so thus no one is superior over another. In governments though, there is a fundamental hierarchical nature in which there are leaders, who are superior, than say, the subjects. In order to fix this problem, Locke introduces the concept of Tacit Consent. Locke sums up tacit consent by saying And to this I say, that every man, that hath any possessions, or enjoyment, of any part of the dominions of any government, cloth thereby give his tacit consent, and is as far forth obliged to obedience to the laws of that government, during such enjoyment, as any one under it; Basically, if an individual is benefitting from resources given to them by the government, then they have tacitly consented to also accept the burdens of that government and follow the laws set forth by that government. Nina says, hit it harder. Build it. Say vicious attack (Gilroy). Nightcrawler takes it a step further by showing us how local news operates when crime rates have dropped. To succeed as a TV station, news should be exclusive and unique. However, Nightcrawler has shown how news can fabricate a crime scene in order to make it look more dramatic and more frightening. • 20. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Atomic Era By William Faulkner The Atomic Era, spanning from 1945 through the 1960s, was a source of immense concern and fear that faced both Americans and the entire world. During this tumultuous time in history, past abominations such as the Depression and two deadly World Wars haunted Americans, while the Cold War loomed as an imminent threat. Due to such prolonged suffering, the human spirit holding people together the world over had fallen apart at the seams. Upon receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950, William Faulkner delivered an acceptance speech in which he applies balanced sentences, meaningful repetition, and potent hyperbole in order to call aspiring writers to abandon their fears and encourage them to create work that will aid the world in midst of the current, volatile Atomic Age. William Faulkner incorporates balanced sentence structure throughout his speech to draw connections between the writer and their role within humanity. Faulkner begins his speech by addressing all aspiring writers and linking himself to them. He states that these writers are already dedicated to the same anguish and travail, among whom is already that one who will someday stand here where I am standing. Faulkner immediately establishes a hopeful tone regarding the future of writers, writers who, like Faulkner, understand that good writing requires the hard work of self sacrifice. Later on, when discussing the work of authors who disregard the universal truths of writing, Faulkner once again employs a balanced sentence. He claims such works are of defeats in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or compassion . Defeat and victory juxtaposed blurs the lines between the two and emphasizes the lack of meaning found within the works of authors unwilling to share the problems of the human heart. The parallelism of victories without hope, pity, and compassion marks any author s work lacking these essential elements as destitute. Faulkner closes his speech with a final balanced statement, The poet s voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail. The familiarity of audiences with actors contributed to the popularity of Hollywood films both home and overseas. First and foremost, Hollywood operated like the big businesses created at the beginning of the 20th century. Just as Henry Ford revolutionized the car industry by mass producing the Model T, the studio system perfected the formula for massive hits. This was acceptable for a time, but after a while it occurred to Russell Simmons, the president of Run DMC s label Def Jam Records, that the group should be getting paid for the promotion they were giving to Adidas. He approached the German shoe company about kicking in some money for the act s 1987 Together Forever Tour. Adidas executives had a skeptical reaction about being associated with rap music, which at that time was known for starting riots. To help change their minds, Simmons invited a couple of Adidas representatives to a Run DMC show. Christopher Vaughn describes the event in Black Enterprise: At a crucial moment, while the rap group was performing the song My Adidas , one of the members yelled out, Okay, everybody in the house, rock your Adidas! This resulted with three thousand pairs of sneakers shot in the air. The Adidas executives couldn t reach for their checkbooks fast enough. • 34. Analysis Of Francois Truffaut s The 400 Blows ( 1959 )... The French New Wave, or Nouvelle Vague, is among the most revolutionary film eras in the history of cinema. Spurred as a result of major shifts in economic, social and technological norms within post WW11 France, the New Wave conceived a renewed mode of expression across various creative industries. Francois Truffaut s The 400 Blows (1959) and Jean Luc Godard s Breathless (1960) are two films, which despite major disparities, would go on to exemplify integral characteristics of the movement in the following years. Perhaps, the best way to truly appreciate the fervor of New Wave cinema is to examine the context of its inception. Both the stylistic and thematic qualities of French New Wave works directly reflect the implicit values, virtues and vices possessed by the emerging youth culture of the late 1950s, which consequently posed a fundamental challenge to the institutions, ideas and attitudes of the past. To fully comprehend why and how this cinematic motion took place, it is valuable here to establish the wider social climate of France at the time, and the active forces which heavily shaped New Wave cinema. Between the years of 1945 and 1975, France would undergo thirty glorious years of economic growth, urbanization, and a considerable baby boom, all of which came to expand and radically alter the parameters of French culture (Haine 33). Beneath the surface affluence however, France was in a state of deep self evaluation and consciousness. Following WW11, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Differences Between Religion And Catholicism 1.0 Framing: 1.1 Hypothesis It is hypothesised that although a number of differences, the similarities between Indigenous Spirituality and Catholicism marriage rituals are due, primarily to the religions views regarding what happens to the soul after the uniting of two different beings. 1.2 Purpose of the Rituals The agreement between man and woman, also know as marriage, is a universal act seen throughout all of humanity. Marriage allows for legal contract between spouses to be sealed and establish the rights of each other. This ceremony dates back into Biblical times, and is shown right throughout the history of both, Catholicism and Indigenous Spirituality. From within Judaism, Catholicism originated. This was believed to have happened after the death and resurrection of Jesus. As several of the beliefs and traditions were carried on from Judaism, it could be assumed that Catholic and Jewish wedding ceremonies are very similar. This ethnographic study will outline and examine the wedding ceremonies from within Catholicism and Judaism, showing the similarities and differences between the two religions, having the main focal point the origins and traditions of the two religions. 2.0 Investigating This ethnographic study started by developing a hypothesis to be tested using primary and secondary research. • 39. Obesity Is An Obesity Epidemic Exists To understand whether or not an obesity epidemic exists, one has to define obesity and determine what suggests an epidemic. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) (2015), obesity means having too much body fat which can occur when one has more caloric intake than one uses, which is different for each person. In comparison, overweight means weighing too much and may result from bone, fat, muscle and body water (NIH, 2015). In both obesity and overweight, an individual s weight is considered greater than what may be considered healthy in relation to their height (NIH, 2015). Contributing factors that may affect weight are eating high fat goods, overeating, genetics, or not being physically active (Akabas, Lederman, Moore, 2012; NIH, 2015). To determine what is considered a healthy weight, a body mass index (BMI) is used to measure an individual s height and weight and estimates body fat as a determinant of potential risks for diseases (Akabas, Lederman, Moore, 2012; Morrill Chinn, 2004). BMI less than 18.5 is recognized as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is within normal weight and is categorized as a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, 30 to 34.9 is mild obesity, 35 to 39.9 is moderate obesity, and 40 and over is severe obesity (Akabas, Lederman, Moore, 2012; Jones, 2006; NIH, 2015; Reville, 2006). Universal Political System During The Cold War For over four decades the citizens of the United States focused their attention to the seemingly interminable tension that existed between American and the Soviet Union. Fear of the USSR and the communist regime tormented Americans, who poured their energy into promoting and safeguarding the democratic values they had always been accustomed to. As the Cold War steadily subsided, the United States and the Soviet Union came together to repair the damage they had inflicted on one another since the end of the Second World War. With the Cold War in the past, the field of International Relations shifted its focus to a multitude of new issues that were on the rise. Issues that were not necessarily relevant during the Cold War, but have dominated global politics in recent years, are defined under the concept of human security. In order to accurately assess the universal political system in a post Cold War world, a more expansive definition of security is required. The emergence of the multi faceted concept of human security can be attributed to the collapse of the bi polar system and the accelerated pace of globalization. As the Cold War diminished, the United States and the USSR agreed that it was not in their best interest to obliterate one another after all. As the Soviet Union disintegrated with nationalist regimes and the economic policies under leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the United States was left to serve as the global hegemony. Finding A Balance 2 FINDING A BALANCE Finding a Balance: Europa Universalis IV In many ways, Europa Universalis 4 is less of a game about history, and more of a game about understanding history. In this game, you play as any nation from 1444 until 1821, from the dawn of the fall of the Western Roman Empire until the death of Napoleon, and your goals as a state are only limited by your imagination and skill. Accomplishing a world conquest is completely within the realm of possibility for a skilled player, or you could be the type of player who simply wants to form Germany or unite the Holy Roman Empire. The player can begin the game at any date during the period which the game takes place, with the map of the world being representative of the actual world at that time, but players will often find that their games do not come close to this accuracy even when the player has nothing to do with it. Because every nation is played by an AI just as long as you have been playing your nation, sometimes variation happens. From personal experience, I have seen Venice control almost all of Greece when I was playing an Asian country. It is this variation which gives the game excitement; if I knew how the game would progress every single time, I would play one game and never play again.
