On Friday 23rd February P7 pupils again led everyone in the 'Step It Up' Sport Relief song with everyone in the Hall joining in the dance. P7 Sports Captains led Assembly by thanking those who had dressed up and purchased wrist bands and explaining why we were fundraising and how the money would be used in the UK and abroad. P7 pupils Emily, Eilidh and friends announced they raised a fabulous £150 last Friday with their Sport Relief Bake Sale, completely selling out of a huge array of home baking within twenty minutes. Thank you to P7 pupils who have been selling wrist bands over the last few weeks and P7 Louis announced that an amazing £274 had been raised! P7 Isaac and his brother Reuben continue with their 'Marathon in a Month' campaign and we are fortunate to have made contact, with their mum's help, with representatives from Asthma UK who will visit school next term to celebrate the boys' achievement and raise awareness of asthma. Sports Captain Eilidh presented Cross Country certificates to P6 pupils (with P7 certificates to follow) and Louis congratulated P6 Dylan on 4th place and P7 Sam on his Bronze medal in the Lothian Schools Cross Country League. Grateful thanks to Mrs Kitchen and all the families who have supported P6 and P7 participation throughout the year. P6 pupils Rory, Isla, Ella and Evie thanked everyone for the tremendous generosity of families in donating Easter eggs to their Foodbank appeal. The big count took place at the end of the day and is in excess of 300 eggs! Three of our ECO Reps, P7 pupils Alejandro, Camille and Rachel told everyone about Earth Hour on Saturday 24th March 8.30pm-9.30pm and encouraged pupils to take part in switching off lights during the hour. They also explained ways we can live more sustainably, beyond Earth Hour, including walking and cycling to school. What a truly wonderful Cycle to School event this morning, in honour of our truly wonderful Business Manager Ms Angela Christie who retires next week. Thank you to all the secret organisers who managed to keep it a complete surprise and to the spectacular masses of parents, pupils and staff who turned out in force to meet at King's Buildings at 8.15am and escort her in style en route to school. Ms Christie has been fundamental in Sciennes' Active Travel movement, providing innovative cycle training programmes for all age groups over many years and developing generations of cyclists. It was a perfect tribute and show of respect and thanks to truly remarkable, inspirational and much loved Angela. Next week, Mrs Noble will lead a whole school Easter Assembly on Thursday 29th March at 1.30pm and we will be joined by Stuart Irvin, Minister at St Catherine of Argyll's Church. In preparation, P4-7 pupils practised the 'Spring Chicken' song. Term ends next week at 3.20pm on THURSDAY 29th March and all resume on TUESDAY 17th April.

Sciennes Be Kind 9.3.18
On Friday 9th March we continued with our 'Be Kind to Others' topic from City of Edinburgh's Health and Wellbeing 'Be Resilient' programme. Pupils from P4 and P6 shared their learning on the topic and gave examples of acts of kindness.
We welcomed Austrian Primary Education students Elisabeth and Daniela and bade fond farewell to Erasmus French teaching student Elodie (from Lyons) and Erasmus Spanish trainee teacher Adriano (from Madrid University) thanking them for all their tremendous support at school.
Our P7 House and Sports Captains have been busily working for several weeks with the Fiona Denvir, Bethan McEwan and Cathy McCormack from the Parent Council to redesign and plan our annual school fundraising events. P7 Captains Flora, Caspar and James introduced their new logo and explained their ideas for P1-4 to continue to take part in a Swimathon, while P5-P7 will take part in a new 'Meadows Mayhem' obstacle course.
P7 pupil Isaac updated us on his 'Marathon in a Month' campaign with brother Reuben to raise awareness and funds for Asthma UK and explained how others can take part, to raise funds for Asthma UK, or for Sport Relief or simply just to participate.
Emily and friends in P7 told everyone about their Sport Relief Bake Sale on Friday 16th March at 12pm in the playground and P7 Sports Captains will continue to sell wristbands for £1.
Alice, Niamh and Margret talked about International Women's Day and updated everyone on their P1 and P2 survey about gender equality. P2 pupils and Girl Guides Penny and Catriona were congratulated on their launch of the Citizen Girl campaign.
P6 pupils Rory, Isla, Ellie and Evie promoted their annual Easter Egg Foodbank Appeal running from 12th - 23rd March. There will be an opportunity to donate eggs at Parent Consultations on Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd March.
What a wonderful P6/7 Disco!
P6/7 Cross Country were congratulated on their participation in the recent EPSSA event at the Meadows where P6 Anna and P6 Dylan both received a 4th place medal.
Huge congratulations to Sean, Evie, Katharine and Tomos on their outstanding success at the recent Edinburgh Semi Final of Euroquiz, as Runners Up, only one point behind eventual winners Stewart Melville's after an unprecedented TWO tie breaking sudden death rounds. Congratulations to Stewart Melville's who will now progress to the Final at Parliament.
Sciennes Send a Cow P3 Harvest Appeal 29.9.17
On Friday 29th September 2017 at Assembly, a group of P3 pupils joined Send A Cow Ambassador, Robert Stephens, in presenting how they are taking action as global citizens in support of four of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our three Primary Three classes are again leading the whole school Harvest Appeal with their Class Teachers and DHT Ms Anstruther, which this year is in support of the Send a Cow charity.
Each child in P3 is producing hand drawn collection envelopes which will be distributed to each of our families. If all our families contribute £1 we will reach a goal of £640 and be able to gift a cow to a family in Africa. Primary Three pupils are taking on different young workforce lead roles for their appeal campaign, such as Communications, Publicity and Finance.
Send a Cow Ambassador, Robert Stephens, spoke with passion and eloquence to explain to the children how the charity works with families in Africa to provide training in not only animal husbandry but also in sanitation, irrigation and keyhole farming. He relayed the story of Jennifer whom he had visited in Uganda and saw first hand the huge difference the project had made to her life and that of her family. Jennifer was able not only to provide milk and vegetables for her own family, but could sell surplus at market to pay for tools, medicine and schooling. Perhaps most telling was Robert's final slide which showed that Jennifer had reached such a self-sufficient stage that she was able to purchase an ornamental vase, merely because she 'liked it.'
Primary Three invited everyone to help Make A Difference by supporting their appeal with donations in the envelopes and also contributing to their planned bake sale on Friday 13th October. We wish them great success in their endeavours and thank Robert for his gracious time supporting the children.
Sciennes Take a Moment Launch Assembly 27.4.18
On Friday 27th April 2018 we introduced pupils to the latest CEC HWB programme topic 'Take A Moment' which we will focus on over the next three weeks in the lead up to Mental Health Week 14th-18th May. Pupils were asked what strategies they use to cope with life's ups and downs and one P4 pupil suggested Music and Singing were great ways to weather a storm.
This led nicely into a fabulous performance of two songs by our Glee Club, led by Miss Dougal and Miss Rogerson and supported by Mrs Yaseen. Truly spreading glee and joy throughout the entire Hall! Sensational!
Our P7 House and Sports Captains updated everyone on the recent Swimathon and Meadows Mayhem fundraisers and received a lovely message of commendation from Ms Christie, read to them by Mr Howie, congratulating them on their outstanding work in redesigning and running the P5-7 fundraiser this year.
P7 pupils Niamh, Alice, Stella and Margret organised interviews this week for ten out of more than fifty P6 applicants to carry on their Equalities work. They announced the four successful candidates - Tomos, Natalia, Nina and Ben M - and will link with them to help them continue their work on gender equality into next session.
P7s Melissa and Iseabhail had approached the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Class Teachers about raising awareness of LGBT equality and gave a remarkable, very carefully considered and appropriately pitched presentation at Assembly. They impressed all with their positive messages and their eloquence. Both will work with SLT to produce a child friendly version of our Equalities Policy. Wonderful to see so many of our pupils taking the lead and making a difference.
Sciennes Global Goals Week 22.9.17
On Friday 22nd September we celebrated Global Goals Week with a look at what action is already taking place at Sciennes to support the Sustainable Development Global Goals (SDGs). We invited the children to design their own Global Goals glasses to reflect the world they want to see by 2030 and asked them to think about which actions they could take this year to be Global #Goalkeepers.
Our three P3 classes are taking action on SDG1, SDG2 and SDG3 by leading a whole school Harvest Appeal in support of the charity 'Send A Cow to Africa' and a speaker will address both Assemblies next week.
This week, in Scottish Climate Week, P7 have been taking action on SDG13 (Climate Action) by presenting 17 000 consultation responses to the Scottish Government's forthcoming Climate Bill with Stop Climate Chaos Scotland and Friends of the Earth. Eco Schools Scotland invited Faye, Sorley and Lucy to participate as a direct result of P7A's work on air pollution last year with Mr Hutchison, Mr McKenna, Ms Christie and SEPA. The pupils cycled to Parliament from school to hand over the responses to Roseanna Cunningham, Cabinet Secretary for the Environment.
Newly elected P6 Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) Lyall, Essie and Anna shared details about their invitation to a training session at City Chambers, designed to support them in their lead role this year. Lyall explained that there had been workshops and one was on air quality, as a direct result of P7A's involvement with SEPA last year. Essie updated everyone on the Hands Up Scotland Travel Survey they organised and that baseline information has been added to our Living Streets Travel Tracker. Anna shared that the JRSOs will work with classes to help them use the Travel Tracker again this year to track active travel.
Supporting the world's plan for sustainable development using the Global Goals will help us all stand up for rights and P7C pupils this week articulately explained their understanding of the UNCRC to the Minister for Young People, Mark MacDonald, at a special celebratory event arranged by Together Scotland. Many thanks to Juliet Harris and Liz Millerfield for organising a very special 'picnic' lunch for the children, in recognition of all their hard work with artists Joanna, Yonnie and Lyver in creating fabulous UNCRC artwork on panels destined for the Scottish Parliament.
There was recognition for Ms MacKintosh in successfully leading engagement with Maths Week Scotland and for Ms Christie in leading a uniquely innovative and adventurous programme of cycling for P6.
P4A showed their wonderful 'Resilience Role Model' posters and Anjalie in P4 was also congratulated on her terrific Mindset poster.
We reminded pupils that to stay safe they should come back into the School Office if the person coming to pick them up is delayed.
We look forward to hearing pupils' ideas for making a difference, at Sciennes, in the local community and beyond.
Sciennes Sharing Take a Moment Assembly 11.5.18
On Friday 11th May 2018 we held a Sharing Assembly, inviting pupils to share strategies they use to cope with life's ups and downs, as part of our CEC HWB Building Resilience topic 'Take A Moment.'
In preparation for Mental Health Week next week, we focused on the importance of sleep at both Assemblies. P7 Captains shared their hints and tips for getting a good night's sleep and we watched a short video to re-enforce key messages, also shared by Mr Howie.
We sang the Fischy Music song "Bad Times Won't Last" and Took A Moment to reflect on previous and new achievements. We celebrated the weekend success of P7 Boroughmuir Rugby FC players Fraser, Henry, Will, Fraser and Innes who alongwith former pupil Jo-Jo Robertson were undefeated in a Yorkshire tournament, despite being 6 months to a year younger than fellow participants.
We also took another opportunity to heap praise on wonderful P5 for all their hard work in preparing for Scottish Opera's "Dragons of the Western Sea" which resulted in a sensational, confident and exuberant performance on Wednesday 9th May.
Sciennes Think Global, Act Local Assembly 2.2.18
On Friday 2nd February we were delighted to welcome a delegation of eight teachers and staff from Laugarnesskóli Primary School in Reykjavik. Laugarnesskóli is the first Icelandic school to gain a Silver Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Award and we welcomed the opportunity to share practice and ideas. After a tour of the school and classrooms, the Headteacher very kindly spoke at Assembly and gifted a beautiful book about Iceland for our Library. We are really looking forward to establishing a new International partnership between our schools.
As global citizens, pupils were encourage to participate in this year's #showthelove climate action campaign, by noticing and recording evidence of climate change over the next few weeks.
We concluded Week Three of our City of Edinburgh 'Be Resilient' Health and Wellbeing topic 'Have a Goal' by sharing pupil examples of goals they have recently set as a family.

On Friday 4th May we continued with our current HWB topic 'Take A Moment' from City of Edinburgh's 'Be Resilient' programme. We reminded pupils of key messages and practised the Fischy Music song "Bad Times Won't Last" in the lead up to our whole school Mental Health Week 14th-18th May. (Please look out for Flyers from Ms Anstruther and the Parent Council Health and Wellbeing and Communications Groups that were sent home in schoolbags on Friday.)
At next week's Assembly, pupils have been invited to share strategies they use to cope with life's ups and downs.
The Gender Equality Group explained the 'UN Day of the Girl' and shared their own inspirational female role models. We have been fortunate to discover from their surveys and campaigns that Sciennes' pupils are very gender neutral in their outlook. The group responded to concerns that have been raised by some of our P7 boys that they were creating an imbalance by focusing on female equality issues. Rather, their intention is to raise awareness of global inequalities that exist beyond our school gates. Also in response to concerns raised, the group of four P7 girls designed their own application forms, interviewed 10 out of more that 50 P6 applications to continue their work next year and sought to appoint two boys and two girls. The new pupils were introduced at Assembly and were articulate in explaining why they had applied to join.
P6 and P7 pupils have been asked to 'Take A Moment' to reflect on all their achievements this year in order to complete their Bronze and Silver Award applications in eJASS (Junior Award Scheme for Schools. They have also been asked to give a five minute talk to their classmates on how they achieved the award by the end of May. FoTA (Friends of the Duke of Edinburgh Award) have contacted recently to invite selected Sciennes' pupils to contribute to a Case Study in early June and there may be press interest.
Pupils were reminded school is closed on Monday and Tuesday. P5 pupils should bring PE kit to wear underneath costumes at their Scottish Opera performance on Wednesday 9th May at 2.15pm in the Hall.
Sciennes Have A Goal House Assembly 15.1.18 #YOYP2018
On Monday 15th January we welcomed back pupils by holding our first House Assemblies of the new year for Grange, Lauder, Sienna and Tantallon. House and Sports Captains explained 'The Year of Young People', reflected on goals already achieved, shared their own goals for the coming year and asked pupils to think about their own goals.
Great to see almost all of our pupils in school uniform, and we appreciate parental support in continuing to encourage this. Warm, hooded jackets with hats, gloves and scarves at the ready, please, for the colder weather.

We have been fortunate to discover from their surveys and campaigns that Sciennes' pupils are very gender neutral in their outlook. The group responded to concerns that have been raised by some of our P7 boys that they were creating an imbalance by focusing on female equality issues. Rather, their intention is to raise awareness of global inequalities that exist beyond our school gates. Also in response to concerns raised, the group of four P7 girls designed their own application forms, interviewed 10 out of more that 50 P6 applications to continue their work next year and sought to appoint two boys and two girls. The new pupils were introduced at Assembly and were articulate in explaining why they had applied to join.
P6 and P7 pupils have been asked to 'Take A Moment' to reflect on all their achievements this year in order to complete their Bronze and Silver Award applications in eJASS (Junior Award Scheme for Schools. They have also been asked to give a five minute talk to their classmates on how they achieved the award by the end of May. FoTA (Friends of the Duke of Edinburgh Award) have contacted recently to invite selected Sciennes' pupils to contribute to a Case Study in early June and there may be press interest.
Pupils were reminded school is closed on Monday and Tuesday. P5 pupils should bring PE kit to wear underneath costumes at their Scottish Opera performance on Wednesday 9th May at 2.15pm in the Hall.
Sciennes Have A Goal House Assembly 15.1.18 #YOYP2018
On Monday 15th January we welcomed back pupils by holding our first House Assemblies of the new year for Grange, Lauder, Sienna and Tantallon. House and Sports Captains explained 'The Year of Young People', reflected on goals already achieved, shared their own goals for the coming year and asked pupils to think about their own goals.
Great to see almost all of our pupils in school uniform, and we appreciate parental support in continuing to encourage this. Warm, hooded jackets with hats, gloves and scarves at the ready, please, for the colder weather.
Sciennes Easter Assembly March 2018
On Thursday 29th March, Headteacher Mrs Alison Noble led the whole school Easter Assembly. Mrs Ruth McVicker played the Sciennes School Song, and it was lovely to be joined by recently retired co-composer Mrs Claire Ford. Stuart Irvin joined us from St Catherine's of Argyll and retold the Easter story. Congratulations to P6 pupils Rory, Isla, Ella and Evie who collected an amazing 310 Easter eggs in their Foodbank Appeal.
Mrs Noble then wished staff well, first thanking Edinburgh University Volunteer Language students Lucas and Tycho for their support this term to classes in Spanish and French and then passing on all our best wishes to Miss Kirsty Gallagher who is getting married in the Easter holidays, to Mrs Emma Kidd who is expecting her new baby soon and to Ms Chantelle Hall who is heading off on new adventures in London.
Mrs Jennie Waters has been an outstanding, devoted and much loved teacher at Sciennes for fourteen years and Mrs Noble spoke for everyone in thanking her sincerely and wishing her well in her new post at Dunbar Primary School. She will be sorely missed but hope she will keep in touch with all her friends at Sciennes.
The special whole school Assembly also marked the retirement of our incomparable and dynamic Business Manager, Ms Angela Christie, who has worked tirelessly throughout her career at Sciennes to provide the best possible experiences and learning for generations of our pupils. Her talents and capabilities are countless and the impact she has had at Sciennes is staggering.
A former Sciennes parent herself, Ms Christie has always worked indefatigably in close partnership with the Friends of Sciennes School Charity Trust and all the many Parent Council subgroups over many years. We were joined at the Assembly by several parent representatives, including Sue Lewis, Emma Kirk and Phoebe Cochrane who presented her with a gift and a banner of messages made in secret by all the pupils.
Mrs Noble and pupil Oscar presented Ms Christie with a beautiful floorbook which Ms Anstruther had arranged to be filled with lovely and creative messages from each class in school. Mrs Noble celebrated some of Ms Christie's outstanding achievements: arranging innovative cycling programmes for P1-P7, promoting sustainability, Active Travel and Spanish, introducing online payments, driving improvements in digital learning, championing outdoor learning and our wonderful playground and ever striving to light the flame of learning in all she does. And all this on top of and far beyond her Business Manager remit, where she also excels! Truly, a Sciennes Legend and thoroughly deserving of now being able to timetable some time for herself. We wish Angela a very happy retirement, with deep love and grateful respect.
After School News, the whole school sang the 'Spring Chicken' song and Mrs Noble wished all our families a safe and happy Easter holiday. School resumes on TUESDAY 17th April.
Sciennes P4-7 Aim High Assembly 18.8.17
On Friday 18th August we welcomed Primary Four pupils and all new pupils to their first upper school assembly. We also welcomed Miss Jennifer Ferguson and Miss Sophie Mitchell to the Primary Five team.
This year, we are revisiting our school vision and values so pupils were invited to think about what is most important to us in the Sciennes Family. We are extremely grateful to parent Emma Kirk (CEO User Vision and Convenor of the Parent Council Communications Group) who recently led an excellent session to help the whole staff revisit and reflect on our vision and values. Pupil Council leaders will soon be elected, one from each class P2-P7, who will then be able to join in on discussions and support the process.
We explored ways to respect everyone's right to be safe and right to learn at Sciennes. Primary Seven pupils helped explain what 'The Golden Rule' means. Showing respect universally unites us all: in the classroom, in the school and beyond, as global citizens. Brad Montague's moving film ' Smuggling Hope' was shown to help us all continue to believe that we all can make a difference by upholding our values.
Sciennes Year of Green Action P4-7 Assembly 18.1.19
On Friday 18th January we launched our Year of Green Action 2019 campaign, with support from our Pupil ECO Group and P7 Captains. We continued with our City of Edinburgh Building Resilience theme of 'Have a Goal' by stating our ECO and Sustainable Development Goal ambitions. The ECO Group shared their progress on the three ECO Schools Scotland topics they have selected this year: Litter, Waste and Food. Pupils encouraged all not only to avoid dropping litter, but also to reduce the amount of litter we produce. Juline spoke about her plastic reduction petition and the group's aims to reduce the use of single use plastic at school and in the dining hall. Everyone was asked to make sure they only use reusable water bottles and take these to the dining hall to avoid using plastic cups. We watched a film by 'Kids Against Plastic' to find out why their campaign is important and the reasons behind it.
Our P7 Gender Equality Pupil Group have been interviewing over the past two weeks to recruit two more P7 members. Ivy and Sean
will join Nina, Ben, Tomos and Natalia. We have been very impressed how the group initiated and led the interviews and they have plans to repeat this later in the year to find a group of P6 pupils who will continue their work next year.
We are very proud to have a strong partnership with our friends and colleagues at the Children's Parliament and watched a video about their fantastic work. P6 pupils Jennifer, Haris and Rory have been taking part in exciting and innovative sessions throughout the year as part of their What Kind of Edinburgh?project where top level council leaders listen to their views and ideas for improving Edinburgh for young people. Rory, Jennifer and Haris gave out leaflets for pupils to share their own ideas about what kind of Edinburgh they want by 2050.
Exciting news! Haris in P6B has been selected for another amazing opportunity with the Children’s Parliament! Over the next couple of years he has been invited to take part in the 2020 and 2021 Cabinet Meetings with children and young people. Since 2017, there has been a meeting between the First Minister and her Cabinet and children and young people from the Children’s Parliament and the Scottish Youth Parliament. As far as we know, Scotland is the only country where an annual meeting like this happens! In yet more exciting news, six P7 pupils have been invited to Parliament on 31st January to speak about Health and Wellbeing with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and 8 P7 pupils have been invited to take part in a Model UN Conference at City Chambers in March.
P7 Hannah shared some tips with P6 about how she prepared for the Steven Lui Cup Burns Recital competition. A worthy winner last year! We wish our P6s good luck in reaching their goals to win this year.

On Friday 6th October we promoted Primary Three's Harvest Appeal and celebrated the many other ways that Sciennes' pupils are taking the lead in school events. We encouraged everyone to think about they can get involved in making a difference in The Year of Young People 2018.
Sciennes Respect Yourself Launch Assembly 31.8.18
On Friday 31st August 2018 we introduced pupils to the latest CEC HWB programme topic "Respect Yourself."
This topic fits very well with our whole school 'All About Me' topic from P1-P7 where pupils, parents and teachers at the start of the new session share and find out about each pupil's uniqueness and strengths. Pupils have been invited to share topic work and family learning tasks at next week's Assembly.
At Sciennes, we have been reviewing our Positive Behaviour Policy to take account of recent research, particularly Paul Dix's book "When The Adults Change, Everything Changes." Following consultation with pupils, we have decided to stop our whole school practice of collecting House merit points. However, each stage in the school will maintain their own rewards and praise systems in class. Children felt that the awarding of such point was irregular, inconsistent and too competitive.
We have also reviewed our use of Golden Time. As part of our school wide Positive Behaviour Policy, loss of Golden Time has been used as a sanction for inappropriate behaviour. Again in consultation with pupils, we have decided to stop this practice. However, we will still maintain a space in the curriculum for structured, purposeful play and socialising but this will no longer be linked to our behaviour policy. As a 1 in 5 Child Poverty Awareness school, we are also conscious that the practice of bringing toys and games from home can lead to challenges and pressures for families and potential scope for inequalities.
Therefore, the structured play activities will be resourced in school from now on.
On some occasions, a year group may opt for a games session and so we would greatly welcome any donations of preloved board games, which can be handed in to the School Office. It is also a good excuse for a clear out and a happy new home for these games! This would help us to provide some exciting opportunities to encourage children to play board games together.
One of our P7 pupils, Essie, suggested renaming Golden Time as 'Play Right' Time. We like the link to UNCRC Article 31 'The right to play' and the implied meanings of playing fair, including everyone and social etiquette. Respect, Inclusion, Teamwork and Effort (RITE) are our school values so we have slightly adapted Essie's idea and will use the term 'Play RITE Time' rather than 'Golden Time.'
Sciennes P4-7 Be The Captain of Your Ship 25.8.17
On Friday 25th August 2017 we introduced pupils to Skipper, the lead character in a Health and Wellbeing programme called 'Building Resilience' which has been developed by a group of Edinburgh staff led by Karen Richmond (South Morningside Primary) and Pattie Santelices (Principal Officer Mental Health & Welllbeing, City of Edinburgh Council.) The programme complements and re-enforces our own Health and Wellbeing programme, developed by Carolyn Anstruther and staff, with support from our Parent Council Health and Wellbeing group, and well established over several years.
Primary Seven pupils from P7B helped introduce ten strategies that we will focus on throughout the year to help our pupils build resilience to support good mental health. We all got on our feet to sing 'Stronger' and considered Kid President's message that things in life may not always be 'awesome', but our response can be. Pupils were invited to research 'Resilience Role Models' at home and create a poster. A selection will be shared at next week's Assembly.
We congratulated our two Fringe Festival actresses Hannah and Faye who have had rave reviews on stage. Zoe in P4A wowed us with her Spanish language skills and we celebrated Aiden and Louis' tremendous achievements competing in an international mathematics competition in Beijing over the summer holiday.
Pupils were reminded that Pupil Council and ECO rep elections will soon take place and to prepare speeches if they wish to stand for election.
Sciennes P4-7 Resilience Role Models Assembly 1.9.17
On Friday 1st September 2017, Mr Howie led the P4-7 Assembly, continuing our 'Building Resilience' Health and Wellbeing focus by exploring Resilience Role Models. Mr Howie particularly focused on Teddy Roosevelt, engagingly telling the story of his fascinating, inspiring life and how he strove to overcome adversity and take on personal challenges. Mr Howie also highlighted links with some of the ten 'Be Resilient' toolkit strategies (from a City of Edinburgh HWB programme) that we will be exploring further this year.
Pupils from P7A helped launch our annual P6 and P7 Junior Awards Scheme for Schools (JASS) and we celebrated recent pupil achievements.
Sciennes End of Term Assembly 2017
Once a year we all come together in the Hall - twenty two classes from Primary 1 to Primary 7 - for our End of Year Assembly, led by Headteacher Mrs Alison Noble.
Sciennes MLK P4-7 Assembly 13.1.17
On Friday 13th January we learned about the life of Dr Martin Luther King Junior and how his peaceful actions and brave dedication to equal rights for all led to change. We asked pupils what they could do in 2017 to make change happen and make a difference for others. P7 pupil Nicky raised almost £500 with his Save the Children Christmas Jumper campaign and P6 pupil Catherine spoke at Assembly to explain how she is being sponsored to donate a length of hair to the Little Princess Trust to help a child suffering hair loss due to cancer treatment.
We celebrated Sciennes' parent, Mr Colin Sim, who took action to make a huge difference to learning and teaching for our pupils by submitting two grant funding applications for the school. One to Aviva Life Assurance was awarded £500 and one to the OneFamily Foundation was awarded an incredible £5000! Thank you to all the Sciennes Family for voting. The money will be used to purchase a year group set of iPads.
Sciennes SHANARRI P4-7 Assembly 25.2.16
On Friday 25th February 2016, House Captains helped explain SHANARRI and what we all need to be healthy and well. Pupils learned a 'SHANARRI' song, ready for our visit from Hopscotch Theatre on Thursday 10th March with their production "The Rights of the Child."

Sciennes Make A Difference and Sport Relief Assembly 18.3.16
Pattie Santelices, City of Edinburgh Principal Officer Health and Wellbeing, joined the P4-7 Assembly on Friday 18th March to share information about City of Edinburgh's 1 in 5 Child Poverty Awareness project. Ms Anstruther accompanied 5 Sciennes Pupil Council members to the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday 14th March and she announced that two of our P2 pupils have won an award for their idea to 'Make a Difference!' They cleverly suggested that school could keep a 'dressing up' box of costumes for pupils to borrow and their idea was awarded £250! Ms Anstruther invited everyone to donate any unused costumes to school to add to the collection for borrowing. We were absolutely delighted when Pattie announced that P6B pupil Asma's poster, highlighting 1 in 5 Child Poverty, has been selected as overall winner and will be used in campaign literature throughout Edinburgh! Pattie presented Asma with a framed copy of her artwork and a certificate. Runner up P6C pupil Samara also received a framed copy of her artwork. All the children who entered the competition received special highlighter pens for their contribution in highlighting 1 in 5 child poverty.
All the pupils were congratulated for helping to Make a Difference by dressing up in sports gear and P.E. kit and donating to Sport Relief. Our end of day total was £450! Congratulations to Isla, Ailsa and Sarah for showing great initiative in organising their own bake sale and raising £14. Very well done to P7A and P5C girls who raised an incredible total of more than £400 rollerskating across the Forth Road Bridge! We look forward to hearing about any personal fundraising efforts from our pupils since many are taking part in local run, swim or cycle events this weekend.
Sports Captains congratulated pupils for their achievements this week and led everyone in singing the Sport Relief song. Special commendation to Alex, Rory and Alex for their initiative in Making a Difference by organising a school collection of Easter eggs for Foodbank. Outstanding citizens!

Sciennes Red Nose Day P4-7 Assembly 24.3.17
On Friday 24th March 2017 Sciennes celebrated Red Nose Day with a whole school Comedy Festival, designed to develop confidence in public speaking and as part of our Health and Wellbeing programme, in support of Comic Relief. We watched a film about 12 year old Hassan from Sierra Leone and found out how Comic Relief has supported him return to school following the Ebola crisis.
Generous donations and support for P6 led bake sales, friendship bracelet, bath bombs and keyring sales as well as P7 Comedy Book and Red Noses sales have helped our school community to come together to make a difference to others, in the UK and abroad. Thank you.
Some of our pupil jokers took to the stage at Assembly to share funny stories, knock-knock jokes, slapstick and one-liners. Thank you to everyone who took part and will receive a special Red Nose Day certificate next week.
Our P7 House and Sports Captains celebrated many recent pupil achievements and P7 Sports Captain, Robert, reported on recent runaway Cross Country success.

Sciennes P4-7 Mental Health Assembly 12.5.17
On Friday 12th May we celebrated a week of Mental Health awareness and activities led by DHT Carolyn Anstruther, PSAs Mrs Helen Anderson and Mrs Sarah Sheehan, Staff Health and Wellbeing Working Group and Parent Council HWB Group which included Relax Kids sessions, yoga, Mindfulness, Random Acts of Kindness, outdoor learning, journalling and a whole school display of happiness bands.
We watched a video created by parent Jimmy Chow which shows just how much work and dedication is involved in preparing our weekly fruit platters by Sciennes' Parent Council Fruit Group and explored a variety of things we can all do to maintain our mental health.
We watched a Kid President video "Life Is Like a Comic" to reflect on how things might not always be 'awesome' but our response can be. Everyone got to their feet to sing along with and do actions to Fischy Music's "Stronger" song.
James and James gave a presentation on Sciennes After School Care Club (SASCS) Holiday and Sports Camps.
Our P7 Captains celebrated pupil achievements and Mr Neil Scott, SSO, assisted by our Sports Captains, presented this year's Swimathon medals. Thank you to Fiona Denvir and Bethan McEwan, Parent Council Health and Wellbeing Group Leads, for providing the medals and organising the event with Ms Christie. Thank you very much to all families who supported poolside and by sponsoring and encouraging.
Sciennes Waste Week P4-7 Assembly 4.3.16
On Friday 4th March, Arleen from ChangeWorks challenged P4-7 pupils to think about how we can reduce waste by recycling and re-using and how to make sure our playground and school are Grade A Litter Free. Our ECO team will meet next week (Waste Week) to discus and decide how to take forward improvements. House Captains helped celebrate the launch of our new Playground Reading Shed and recognise pupils' achievements.
Sciennes P4-7 Burns and JASS Assembly 29.1.16
P6 finalists Ben, Rachel and Cai competed to win the Steven Lui cup for Burns Recital at the P4-7 Assembly on Friday 29th January 2016. All three contenders were outstanding, giving an exceptionally high standard of performance. The closely run decision was taken to award Rachel with the cup for her very confident delivery and stage presence. Well done to all!
Jonathan in P7B, assisted by Sam, gave a superb account of how he set about achieving the 'Me and My World' section of his Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS) award by supporting local charity Re-Act Scotland. An exemplary model for other pupils to follow.
Sciennes 1 in 5 Make a Difference Award
Sciennes Primary School is participating in City of Edinburgh's 1 in 5 Child Poverty Awareness campaign. Sciennes' Pupil Council is taking the lead in encouraging fellow pupils, classes, staff and parents to submit ideas of how they would use the award money to help make a difference to children and families living on or below the poverty line in our school community. The three best ideas will be considered for a £250 award.
Sciennes Fairtrade P4-7 Assembly 3.3.17
On Friday 3rd March we held a Fairtrade Assembly to highlight how paying a fair, minimum price to Fairtrade farmers can make a real difference to their livelihoods. Mr Hutchison is organising a Fairtrade Craft and Tuckshop on Thursday 9th March and will provide further details next week.
President Obama has encouraged the next generation to 'take up the mic' through his Obama Foundation and we are encouraging pupils to get involved in Red Nose Day by 'saying something funny for money.' We are mindful of our 1 in 5 Child Poverty Awareness project and so pupils need only bring a donation if they wish, rather than be sponsored. Pupils will be asked to share a joke, funny story, rhyme, poem or drawing with their class as part of our whole school Comedy Festival later in the month and we are looking forward to encouraging their confidence in performance and their Listening and Talking skills in a fun way. P7 pupils will soon be selling red noses in school and our P7 Comedy Book launches on 17th March. Please respond to the email you will shorty receive to place advance orders by 8th March, ahead of printing dates. Sciennes' parent Richard Melvin, comedian and compere at The Stand, has very kindly offered to provide comedy workshops for P6 pupils and we continue to use the BBC and Blue Peter resource "Comedy Classroom" to develop literacy skills through comedy. We are learning the new Red Nose Day song for Comic Relief and everyone who takes part in our Comedy Festival will receive a certificate.
P5 pupil Cole blew everyone away with his outstanding street dance skills and he gained deserved applause for his confident performance. We congratulated pupils on many recent achievements.
Sciennes Global Goals Week Assembly 27.9.18
On Friday 28th September 2018, we celebrated Global Goals Week for the third time since their launch in 2015. We looked at what action is already taking place at Sciennes to support the Sustainable Development Global Goals (SDGs) and how we can take further action.
We also spoke to the children about how they can help improve our school. This session we are trialling Learner Participation groups in P4-7 and we invited all children to take part in one of six school improvement groups, linked to our school improvement plan. Committees will be formed for each of the six groups who will meet with lead teachers throughout the year while the wider body of about sixty pupils in each group will meet together a few times throughout the year. The older children will also work with P1-P3 to seek their views.

Sciennes Year of Green Action P4-7 Assembly 18.1.19
On Friday 18th January we launched our Year of Green Action 2019 campaign, with support from our Pupil ECO Group and P7 Captains. We continued with our City of Edinburgh Building Resilience theme of 'Have a Goal' by stating our ECO and Sustainable Development Goal ambitions. The ECO Group shared their progress on the three ECO Schools Scotland topics they have selected this year: Litter, Waste and Food. Pupils encouraged all not only to avoid dropping litter, but also to reduce the amount of litter we produce. Juline spoke about her plastic reduction petition and the group's aims to reduce the use of single use plastic at school and in the dining hall. Everyone was asked to make sure they only use reusable water bottles and take these to the dining hall to avoid using plastic cups. We watched a film by 'Kids Against Plastic' to find out why their campaign is important and the reasons behind it.
Our P7 Gender Equality Pupil Group have been interviewing over the past two weeks to recruit two more P7 members. Ivy and Sean
will join Nina, Ben, Tomos and Natalia. We have been very impressed how the group initiated and led the interviews and they have plans to repeat this later in the year to find a group of P6 pupils who will continue their work next year.
We are very proud to have a strong partnership with our friends and colleagues at the Children's Parliament and watched a video about their fantastic work. P6 pupils Jennifer, Haris and Rory have been taking part in exciting and innovative sessions throughout the year as part of their What Kind of Edinburgh?project where top level council leaders listen to their views and ideas for improving Edinburgh for young people. Rory, Jennifer and Haris gave out leaflets for pupils to share their own ideas about what kind of Edinburgh they want by 2050.
Exciting news! Haris in P6B has been selected for another amazing opportunity with the Children’s Parliament! Over the next couple of years he has been invited to take part in the 2020 and 2021 Cabinet Meetings with children and young people. Since 2017, there has been a meeting between the First Minister and her Cabinet and children and young people from the Children’s Parliament and the Scottish Youth Parliament. As far as we know, Scotland is the only country where an annual meeting like this happens! In yet more exciting news, six P7 pupils have been invited to Parliament on 31st January to speak about Health and Wellbeing with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and 8 P7 pupils have been invited to take part in a Model UN Conference at City Chambers in March.
P7 Hannah shared some tips with P6 about how she prepared for the Steven Lui Cup Burns Recital competition. A worthy winner last year! We wish our P6s good luck in reaching their goals to win this year.

Sciennes Year of Young People 6.10.17 #YOYP2018
On Friday 6th October we promoted Primary Three's Harvest Appeal and celebrated the many other ways that Sciennes' pupils are taking the lead in school events. We encouraged everyone to think about they can get involved in making a difference in The Year of Young People 2018.
Sciennes Respect Yourself Launch Assembly 31.8.18
On Friday 31st August 2018 we introduced pupils to the latest CEC HWB programme topic "Respect Yourself."
This topic fits very well with our whole school 'All About Me' topic from P1-P7 where pupils, parents and teachers at the start of the new session share and find out about each pupil's uniqueness and strengths. Pupils have been invited to share topic work and family learning tasks at next week's Assembly.
At Sciennes, we have been reviewing our Positive Behaviour Policy to take account of recent research, particularly Paul Dix's book "When The Adults Change, Everything Changes." Following consultation with pupils, we have decided to stop our whole school practice of collecting House merit points. However, each stage in the school will maintain their own rewards and praise systems in class. Children felt that the awarding of such point was irregular, inconsistent and too competitive.
We have also reviewed our use of Golden Time. As part of our school wide Positive Behaviour Policy, loss of Golden Time has been used as a sanction for inappropriate behaviour. Again in consultation with pupils, we have decided to stop this practice. However, we will still maintain a space in the curriculum for structured, purposeful play and socialising but this will no longer be linked to our behaviour policy. As a 1 in 5 Child Poverty Awareness school, we are also conscious that the practice of bringing toys and games from home can lead to challenges and pressures for families and potential scope for inequalities.
Therefore, the structured play activities will be resourced in school from now on.
On some occasions, a year group may opt for a games session and so we would greatly welcome any donations of preloved board games, which can be handed in to the School Office. It is also a good excuse for a clear out and a happy new home for these games! This would help us to provide some exciting opportunities to encourage children to play board games together.
One of our P7 pupils, Essie, suggested renaming Golden Time as 'Play Right' Time. We like the link to UNCRC Article 31 'The right to play' and the implied meanings of playing fair, including everyone and social etiquette. Respect, Inclusion, Teamwork and Effort (RITE) are our school values so we have slightly adapted Essie's idea and will use the term 'Play RITE Time' rather than 'Golden Time.'
Sciennes P4-7 Be The Captain of Your Ship 25.8.17
On Friday 25th August 2017 we introduced pupils to Skipper, the lead character in a Health and Wellbeing programme called 'Building Resilience' which has been developed by a group of Edinburgh staff led by Karen Richmond (South Morningside Primary) and Pattie Santelices (Principal Officer Mental Health & Welllbeing, City of Edinburgh Council.) The programme complements and re-enforces our own Health and Wellbeing programme, developed by Carolyn Anstruther and staff, with support from our Parent Council Health and Wellbeing group, and well established over several years.
Primary Seven pupils from P7B helped introduce ten strategies that we will focus on throughout the year to help our pupils build resilience to support good mental health. We all got on our feet to sing 'Stronger' and considered Kid President's message that things in life may not always be 'awesome', but our response can be. Pupils were invited to research 'Resilience Role Models' at home and create a poster. A selection will be shared at next week's Assembly.
We congratulated our two Fringe Festival actresses Hannah and Faye who have had rave reviews on stage. Zoe in P4A wowed us with her Spanish language skills and we celebrated Aiden and Louis' tremendous achievements competing in an international mathematics competition in Beijing over the summer holiday.
Pupils were reminded that Pupil Council and ECO rep elections will soon take place and to prepare speeches if they wish to stand for election.
Sciennes P4-7 Resilience Role Models Assembly 1.9.17
On Friday 1st September 2017, Mr Howie led the P4-7 Assembly, continuing our 'Building Resilience' Health and Wellbeing focus by exploring Resilience Role Models. Mr Howie particularly focused on Teddy Roosevelt, engagingly telling the story of his fascinating, inspiring life and how he strove to overcome adversity and take on personal challenges. Mr Howie also highlighted links with some of the ten 'Be Resilient' toolkit strategies (from a City of Edinburgh HWB programme) that we will be exploring further this year.
Pupils from P7A helped launch our annual P6 and P7 Junior Awards Scheme for Schools (JASS) and we celebrated recent pupil achievements.
Sciennes End of Term Assembly 2017
Once a year we all come together in the Hall - twenty two classes from Primary 1 to Primary 7 - for our End of Year Assembly, led by Headteacher Mrs Alison Noble.
Sciennes MLK P4-7 Assembly 13.1.17
On Friday 13th January we learned about the life of Dr Martin Luther King Junior and how his peaceful actions and brave dedication to equal rights for all led to change. We asked pupils what they could do in 2017 to make change happen and make a difference for others. P7 pupil Nicky raised almost £500 with his Save the Children Christmas Jumper campaign and P6 pupil Catherine spoke at Assembly to explain how she is being sponsored to donate a length of hair to the Little Princess Trust to help a child suffering hair loss due to cancer treatment.
We celebrated Sciennes' parent, Mr Colin Sim, who took action to make a huge difference to learning and teaching for our pupils by submitting two grant funding applications for the school. One to Aviva Life Assurance was awarded £500 and one to the OneFamily Foundation was awarded an incredible £5000! Thank you to all the Sciennes Family for voting. The money will be used to purchase a year group set of iPads.
Sciennes SHANARRI P4-7 Assembly 25.2.16
On Friday 25th February 2016, House Captains helped explain SHANARRI and what we all need to be healthy and well. Pupils learned a 'SHANARRI' song, ready for our visit from Hopscotch Theatre on Thursday 10th March with their production "The Rights of the Child."

Sciennes Make A Difference and Sport Relief Assembly 18.3.16
Pattie Santelices, City of Edinburgh Principal Officer Health and Wellbeing, joined the P4-7 Assembly on Friday 18th March to share information about City of Edinburgh's 1 in 5 Child Poverty Awareness project. Ms Anstruther accompanied 5 Sciennes Pupil Council members to the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday 14th March and she announced that two of our P2 pupils have won an award for their idea to 'Make a Difference!' They cleverly suggested that school could keep a 'dressing up' box of costumes for pupils to borrow and their idea was awarded £250! Ms Anstruther invited everyone to donate any unused costumes to school to add to the collection for borrowing. We were absolutely delighted when Pattie announced that P6B pupil Asma's poster, highlighting 1 in 5 Child Poverty, has been selected as overall winner and will be used in campaign literature throughout Edinburgh! Pattie presented Asma with a framed copy of her artwork and a certificate. Runner up P6C pupil Samara also received a framed copy of her artwork. All the children who entered the competition received special highlighter pens for their contribution in highlighting 1 in 5 child poverty.
All the pupils were congratulated for helping to Make a Difference by dressing up in sports gear and P.E. kit and donating to Sport Relief. Our end of day total was £450! Congratulations to Isla, Ailsa and Sarah for showing great initiative in organising their own bake sale and raising £14. Very well done to P7A and P5C girls who raised an incredible total of more than £400 rollerskating across the Forth Road Bridge! We look forward to hearing about any personal fundraising efforts from our pupils since many are taking part in local run, swim or cycle events this weekend.
Sports Captains congratulated pupils for their achievements this week and led everyone in singing the Sport Relief song. Special commendation to Alex, Rory and Alex for their initiative in Making a Difference by organising a school collection of Easter eggs for Foodbank. Outstanding citizens!

Sciennes Red Nose Day P4-7 Assembly 24.3.17
On Friday 24th March 2017 Sciennes celebrated Red Nose Day with a whole school Comedy Festival, designed to develop confidence in public speaking and as part of our Health and Wellbeing programme, in support of Comic Relief. We watched a film about 12 year old Hassan from Sierra Leone and found out how Comic Relief has supported him return to school following the Ebola crisis.
Generous donations and support for P6 led bake sales, friendship bracelet, bath bombs and keyring sales as well as P7 Comedy Book and Red Noses sales have helped our school community to come together to make a difference to others, in the UK and abroad. Thank you.
Some of our pupil jokers took to the stage at Assembly to share funny stories, knock-knock jokes, slapstick and one-liners. Thank you to everyone who took part and will receive a special Red Nose Day certificate next week.
Our P7 House and Sports Captains celebrated many recent pupil achievements and P7 Sports Captain, Robert, reported on recent runaway Cross Country success.
The Evening News took a photograph yesterday which is on Page 17 of today's newspaper and another photograph taken today will appear in tomorrow's edition.
Sciennes P4-7 Mental Health Assembly 12.5.17
On Friday 12th May we celebrated a week of Mental Health awareness and activities led by DHT Carolyn Anstruther, PSAs Mrs Helen Anderson and Mrs Sarah Sheehan, Staff Health and Wellbeing Working Group and Parent Council HWB Group which included Relax Kids sessions, yoga, Mindfulness, Random Acts of Kindness, outdoor learning, journalling and a whole school display of happiness bands.
We watched a video created by parent Jimmy Chow which shows just how much work and dedication is involved in preparing our weekly fruit platters by Sciennes' Parent Council Fruit Group and explored a variety of things we can all do to maintain our mental health.
We watched a Kid President video "Life Is Like a Comic" to reflect on how things might not always be 'awesome' but our response can be. Everyone got to their feet to sing along with and do actions to Fischy Music's "Stronger" song.
James and James gave a presentation on Sciennes After School Care Club (SASCS) Holiday and Sports Camps.
Our P7 Captains celebrated pupil achievements and Mr Neil Scott, SSO, assisted by our Sports Captains, presented this year's Swimathon medals. Thank you to Fiona Denvir and Bethan McEwan, Parent Council Health and Wellbeing Group Leads, for providing the medals and organising the event with Ms Christie. Thank you very much to all families who supported poolside and by sponsoring and encouraging.
Sciennes Waste Week P4-7 Assembly 4.3.16
On Friday 4th March, Arleen from ChangeWorks challenged P4-7 pupils to think about how we can reduce waste by recycling and re-using and how to make sure our playground and school are Grade A Litter Free. Our ECO team will meet next week (Waste Week) to discus and decide how to take forward improvements. House Captains helped celebrate the launch of our new Playground Reading Shed and recognise pupils' achievements.
Sciennes P4-7 Burns and JASS Assembly 29.1.16
P6 finalists Ben, Rachel and Cai competed to win the Steven Lui cup for Burns Recital at the P4-7 Assembly on Friday 29th January 2016. All three contenders were outstanding, giving an exceptionally high standard of performance. The closely run decision was taken to award Rachel with the cup for her very confident delivery and stage presence. Well done to all!
Jonathan in P7B, assisted by Sam, gave a superb account of how he set about achieving the 'Me and My World' section of his Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS) award by supporting local charity Re-Act Scotland. An exemplary model for other pupils to follow.
Sciennes 1 in 5 Make a Difference Award
Sciennes Primary School is participating in City of Edinburgh's 1 in 5 Child Poverty Awareness campaign. Sciennes' Pupil Council is taking the lead in encouraging fellow pupils, classes, staff and parents to submit ideas of how they would use the award money to help make a difference to children and families living on or below the poverty line in our school community. The three best ideas will be considered for a £250 award.
Sciennes Fairtrade P4-7 Assembly 3.3.17
On Friday 3rd March we held a Fairtrade Assembly to highlight how paying a fair, minimum price to Fairtrade farmers can make a real difference to their livelihoods. Mr Hutchison is organising a Fairtrade Craft and Tuckshop on Thursday 9th March and will provide further details next week.
President Obama has encouraged the next generation to 'take up the mic' through his Obama Foundation and we are encouraging pupils to get involved in Red Nose Day by 'saying something funny for money.' We are mindful of our 1 in 5 Child Poverty Awareness project and so pupils need only bring a donation if they wish, rather than be sponsored. Pupils will be asked to share a joke, funny story, rhyme, poem or drawing with their class as part of our whole school Comedy Festival later in the month and we are looking forward to encouraging their confidence in performance and their Listening and Talking skills in a fun way. P7 pupils will soon be selling red noses in school and our P7 Comedy Book launches on 17th March. Please respond to the email you will shorty receive to place advance orders by 8th March, ahead of printing dates. Sciennes' parent Richard Melvin, comedian and compere at The Stand, has very kindly offered to provide comedy workshops for P6 pupils and we continue to use the BBC and Blue Peter resource "Comedy Classroom" to develop literacy skills through comedy. We are learning the new Red Nose Day song for Comic Relief and everyone who takes part in our Comedy Festival will receive a certificate.
P5 pupil Cole blew everyone away with his outstanding street dance skills and he gained deserved applause for his confident performance. We congratulated pupils on many recent achievements.

Sciennes Global Goals Week Assembly 27.9.18
On Friday 28th September 2018, we celebrated Global Goals Week for the third time since their launch in 2015. We looked at what action is already taking place at Sciennes to support the Sustainable Development Global Goals (SDGs) and how we can take further action.
We also spoke to the children about how they can help improve our school. This session we are trialling Learner Participation groups in P4-7 and we invited all children to take part in one of six school improvement groups, linked to our school improvement plan. Committees will be formed for each of the six groups who will meet with lead teachers throughout the year while the wider body of about sixty pupils in each group will meet together a few times throughout the year. The older children will also work with P1-P3 to seek their views.

Sciennes P4-7 Patron of Reading Assembly 1.5.15
Janis Mackay, celebrated and award winning children's author was invited by Ms Bethan Owen to become Sciennes' Patron of Reading and we are all thrilled that Janis has accepted this role. She will work with the school over the next three years and gave inspiring, masterclass presentations to both P1-3 and P4-7 Assemblies on Friday 1st May 2015.
Sciennes Shakespeare Assembly 28.4.17
On Friday 28th April we explored Shakespeare's legacy to commemorate the anniversary of his birth and death on 23rd April. Our three P7 classes have just begun preparations for their end of year show which this year will be a musical entitled "Shakespeare Rocks!"
Our P7 House Captains thanked pupils and staff for leading numeracy sessions for families on Thursday evening so successfully, and thanked Ms Anstruther for co-ordinating and inviting Head of Maths Faculty Mr Ben Lewis to give presentations to parents. They congratulated pupils on recent achievements, which included a Princess Diana Award certificate for P5 pupils Rory, Isla and Ella in recognition of their efforts in donating hundreds of Easter eggs to Foodbank on National Kindness Day. Swim and Dive team pupils also received EPSSA certificates.
House Assemblies will take place next week led by P7 House and Sports Captains, Mrs Noble (Tantallon), Ms Anstruther (Grange), Ms Gallagher (Lauder) and Mr McKenna (Sienna).
Sciennes Easter P4-7 Assembly 24.3.16
Mrs Noble led the P1-3 and the P4-7 Easter Assemblies in the Hall on the last day of term Thursday 24th March and wished everyone a safe and happy Easter holiday. Jane, Minister from St Catherine's of Argyll Church, talked about the symbol of the cross and what Easter means to Christians and Miss Dougal led the School Choir in a rousing rendtion of pupil penned "Come On and Sing With Me." P5 Play Squad pupils explained the new Small Play materials and how to look after them in the playground. P2 pupils Emma and Bella were congratulated on their £250 Make a Difference award winning dressing up box idea to tackle 1 in 5 Child Poverty. House Captains congratulated pupils on recent achievements and we gave a fond farewell to P7B pupil Alexandra who returns to Australia. Mrs Noble wished everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Sciennes Walk to School Week Assembly 11.5.18
On Friday 18th May, JRSOs encouraged everyone to join our Living Streets Walk to School Week next week. We explored the benefits of walking to school and asked what everyone enjoyed about their own walk to school. We were joined by parent Anna Salman who will be working with JRSOs and ECO Reps next week issuing leaflets encouraging more parent volunteers for our School Streets road closure and badges for Active Travel. Miss McGouther is leading another Cycle to School Day on Friday 25th May and we hope the weather stays glorious for an excellent turnout. Meet 8.15am at King's Buildings or join en route.
Josh explained how school will again be participating in National Clean Air Day and we have been invited to take part in an exciting event on the Mound on the day!
ECO Reps Paloma, Camille and Alejandro updated us on their plans for Litter and Bug Hotels and encouraged use of the ECO Suggestion box.
The theme tune for Walk to School Day is 'Walk This Way' and the children in the Hall were visibly bemused by the Aerosmith and Run DMC video but all enjoyed the music.
After a very successful Mental Health Week and Outdoor Classroom Day, pupils were reminded to keep filling in their Sleep Diaries over the long weekend. We sang 'Bad Times Won't Last' and promoted walking to school as an excellent coping strategy.
P5s told us about their exciting enterprise plans for the Year of Young People Summer Fair on Saturday 26th May 12.30pm-3.00pm and all pupils who are available on the day are still welcome to come along to help lead coding sessions.
Chiara and Amelia spoke very well about their efforts to promote Human Rights charity Amnesty. They are holding a bake sale on Saturday 19th May 9.45am -10.45am and hoping to draw the attention of hungry Sciennes' footballers on the Meadows!
P5 pupil Qingyang was warmly congratulated on her amazing achievement in being awarded Scottish U11 Badminton Doubles Champion.

Sciennes Values House Assembly 23.4.18
On Monday 23rd April 2018 we held a House Assembly for each of our four Houses - Grange, Lauder, Sienna and Tantallon. P7 House and Sports Captains introduced our new Values which staff and the Pupil Council have been working on this year with Olivia's mum Emma Kirk, who chairs the Parent Council Communications Group. P7 Captains explained what they felt each Value meant to them and invited everyone to think about that as well.
Captains also explained their role in supporting the P1-4 Swimathon event and designing and leading the new Meadows Mayhem school fundraising event, both taking place this week. Sponsorship for both events is online through BT MyDonate.
We sang the SHANARRI song and encouraged everyone to keep getting involved in the Year of Young People, particularly at our forthcoming Summer Fair on Saturday 26th May 12.30pm-3.00pm.
We showed a very special video by our Pupil Support Assistants created in tribute to the wonderful Angela Christie who truly believed and truly achieved in all she undertook at Sciennes throughout her long and distinguished career. Although officially retired, Angela is back in school this week helping as usual with the school fundraising events.

Yes you can! You are the master of your fate and the captain of your soul. Mr Howie led the P4-7 Assembly at Sciennes Primary School on Friday 15th January and encouraged everyone to recognise what we can and cannot control then take charge of what we know we CAN change.

On Friday 20th January we were delighted to welcome back Former Pupils Jamie Underwood, Li-Sian Song and James Stewart, who are now in S6 at James Gillespie's High School and preparing for a visit to twinned schools in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in February. They have asked pupils to donate pencil cases, toys, games and clothes which can be handed into the School Office until Friday 2nd February.
Mr Howie gave an inspirational presentation on how Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Arkansas Little Rock Nine, successfully managed her emotions and response to the extreme prejudice and racist hostility she endured in 1957, just for going to school. Her remarkable dignity is an example to us all and linked very effectively to school use of 'Emotions Talk' as a support for pupils in managing their emotions. Mr Howie encouraged everyone to learn not only from role models in history but also from people around us in how we manage our emotions and stand up for what we value. We all certainly look to Mr Howie to inspire and encourage us with his engaging and deeply thought-provoking presentations, taking powerful lessons we can all learn from History and relating them to our school.
We thanked Sciennes' parent, Mr Colin Sim, who as well as recently securing £5500 for digital learning through funding applications also secured a grant of £2000 from South Central Edinburgh Neighbourhood Partnership to enhance our school grounds. There is great interest from the children in the willow structures currently being installed in the playground by Gus and his team from 'Earth Calling'.

Sciennes Clean Air Day 18.6.2021
Due to staff absence, this week’s Assembly on Friday 18 June was emailed to classes. The focus was on Clean Air Day and marked five years of Sciennes’ support for the campaign. We had been pencilled in for a visit from the new Environment Minister, Mairi McAllan, yesterday but unfortunately she had conflicting engagements. Our P7 Captains were presented with a Clean Air Day bag from John Bynorth at Environmental Protection Scotland as a thank you for their contribution to the successful campaign launch in May. Mr Hutchison’s P4A class received colouring books in recognition of his support since we launched the first Clean Air Day at Sciennes with former Environment Minister Roseanne Cunningham. The children have campaigned for clean air in surrounding streets and for closure of Sciennes Road outside the school through the Living Streets initiative, as well as learning about how air pollution can affect everyone’s health both here and abroad. P3 pupils Poppy, Makeda and Ella gave a presentation on how they are helping the Homeless and how they want to change the world!
Sciennes SDGs 11.6.21
On Friday 11 June 2021 we focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how our ECO Team is working to support these goals in school. P6C had a chance to hold their own United Nations session this week, role playing and debating to help them understand how representatives from 193 member states across the globe are working together to tackle poverty, reduce inequalities and tackle climate change. P6C came up with some amazing ideas to support refugees and help countries deal with COVID-19.
This year, our ECO Team has been focusing on three main topics: Litter, Life Below Water and Climate Action. P4 reps are currently following up on their recent fact-finding mission with Mr Scott. They have decided to make signs to help us all recycle using the correct bags and bins. Today, P7 Rosa Mellanby gave a rousing call to action in reducing single use plastic (which can end up in the oceans). She asked everyone to boycott plastic straws – in school and at home. P6 pupils Ellie Napier, Vatanda McColl and Gracie Kirk prepared a presentation on Palm Oil. Vatanda was absent today so Ellie and Gracie broadcast live at both Assemblies. They were so knowledgeable, articulate and passionate about raising awareness of the problems of palm oil use and making suggestions for change. Thank you to all our ECO Reps for working so hard this year with Miss Wittland and Ms Gallagher and thank you to Ellie, Grace and Rosa for presenting so well today.
Sciennes Alan Turing Assembly 14.5.21
On Friday 14 May 2021 our Assemblies focused on Alan Turing, not only to raise awareness about his inspirational achievements as the father of the modern computer and the role he played in cracking the Enigma machine code during the Second World War (hastening its end and thereby saving millions of lives) but also to raise awareness of LGBT+ Equalities.
Sciennes Deaf Awareness week 7.5.21
On Friday 7 May 2021 our Assemblies focused on Deaf Awareness Week and we are extremely grateful to parent Aicha Reid for providing signing videos which we have used in class each day. Our P4 and P7 Equalities Advisors produced their own signing videos to share at Assembly. Unfortunately, we experienced technical difficulties which forced us to abandon the live P1-3 Assembly broadcast which was hugely disappointing. We managed to get operational for the P4-7 Assembly and gave some information about deafness and hearing impairment and shared the story of Helen Keller’s life and amazing achievements. We will broadcast the Assembly to P1-3 on Monday and will first make sure all is working well in cyberland!
Sciennes Participate and Lead Assembly 30.4.21
On Friday 30 April 2021 both our Assemblies focused on pupils and our school community not only participating but also taking the lead. We celebrated the Friends of Sciennes School’ Seven Hills Challenge and shared details of how many pupils took part. It was wonderful to see so many of our families taking to the hills! We showed a slideshow of happy, smiling children enjoying days out across the city. Mr Armstrong and our Digital Leaders shared how they have been supporting teachers and pupils with using technologies for teaching and learning.
Well done Eve Buckeridge and Kathleen Hunt who under their ‘own steam’ decided to clear up rubbish at Portobello beach on Saturday followed by a Bake Sale for World Wildlife Fund & raised over £25! We are so very proud of them!
Congratulations to P5 pupil Rosemary Reid who received a Green Pencil Award with her poem “Nature in Lockdown.” All the children watched a video of her reciting her winning poem at Assembly. Well done, Rosemary!
Sciennes Easter Assembly 2021
Stuart Irvin, the Minister from St Catherine’s Argyll Church joined us on Thursday 1 April 2021 for the live broadcast of our Easter Assemblies to P1-3 pupils and then to P4-P7 pupils. Stuart told the story of Maundy Thursday and Mr Hunter focused on Spring and Spring cleaning! Our three P4 ECO Reps, Stanley, Abby and Sara, demonstrated their interviewing skills by asking Mr Neil Scott (our janitor) about Recycling at Sciennes and how we can all help make it better. Mr Scott asked them for their ideas on reducing, reusing and recycling. What are yours? Tell your ECO Rep. Thank you to both of our wonderful janitors Mr Scott and Mr Reid for working so hard for all of us, recycling 400 milk cartons as well as paper and card every single day. Sciennes P-4-7 Road Safety 13.11.20
Assemblies on Friday 13th november 2020 related to our values of Teamwork and Respect through Learner Participation. P7 Sports Captains Josh, Cyrus, Finn and Callum introduced themselves and shared their own inspirational sportsmen to mark the upcoming International Boys and Men in Sport Day on 17th November. Many thanks to P5 pupil Alfie for drawing this date to our attention. All sixteen of our P7 Junior Leadership Team members have now introduced themselves at our weekly online Assemblies, broadcast live to the school. Our P6 Junior Road Safety Officers Eilidh, Amy and Rory again took the lead, this time in launching Road Safety Week. The theme this year is ‘No Need for Speed’ and they invited pupils to take part in designing their own Road Safety poster next week as well as encouraging everyone to ‘Be Bright and Be Seen.’ Mr hunter read a short story to P1-3 called “Bright is Right” from Think Education about the importance of being seen in the dark.

Sciennes P4-7 Assembly Learner Participation 21.8.20
On Friday 21st August 2020 we held our second live Assembly, broadcast to P1-P7 classrooms via Microsoft Teams. This week the focus was on Learner Participation. Mr Hunter explained to the children that we want to hear their ideas to help us improve our school. At the Upper Assembly, children heard about the many different areas for leadership and participation. We have had a few technical issues in some classes but we are getting better at everyone being online together.

Sciennes Junior Award Scheme for Schools 4.10.2019
On Friday 4th October 2019, we launched our Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS) for P6 and P7 pupils. JASS is a Duke of Edinburgh style award for 10-14 year olds and stemmed from an original idea by Sciennes staff! Today it is an international programme, recognising young people's personal achievements. Pupils can gain Bronze in P6 and Silver in P7 (with Gold achievable by the end of S2). All our pupils attending Lagganlia next week will gain accreditation for one quarter of the award, the 'Adventure' element. P7A Lauder pupils shared their memories of Benmore and what they are looking forward to at Lagganlia.
P3 pupils gave a presentation on their Harvest Appeal for Foodbank and reminded everyone that donations can be handed in to Class Teachers until Friday 11th October. P3 pupils will come and collect. Local Minister Stuart Irvin from St Catherine's of Argyll and a representative from Foodbank will join us for a Harvest Assembly next Friday.
Elika in P5 shared her amazing experience at the launch of the Sir David Attenborough Polar Research Vessel and P7 Rebecca announced this year's ECO Reps. It was a very difficult choice with over 150 out of 375 pupils showing interest in the 12 P4-P7 places. An indication of how important environmental issues are to our young people. Congratulations to Elizabeth who retains her World Stone Skimming Champion title and to all the girls who performed in an amazing ballet production of Cinderella by the Grange School of Ballet at the Churchill Theatre. P7A Lauder pupils led the singing superbly this week!

On Friday 27th September 2019, P6 pupils Serena, Lexia, Sofia and Bella confidently shared their experiences presenting at the Scottish Learning Festival on Wednesday 25th September with Jenni Snell (Youthlink Scotland) and Rachael Hatfield (MSYP).
Pupils from Grange in P7A capably took their turn in presenting the P4-7 Assembly and in leading the singing. P3A pupils Laura and Michael were roundly applauded for their clear and confident launch of this year’s P3 led Harvest Appeal for Foodbank. Non-perishable food items can be handed into class from Monday until Friday 11th October. P3 pupils will come to classes to collect.
To celebrate the fourth anniversary of the launch of the UN Global Goals (which have their base in human rights) we watched a video - “Just A Kid” - and invited pupils to keep thinking about how they might make a difference to others this year.
This was the last week for sharing Resilience Role Model posters and Ms Gallagher was genuinely touched that a group of P4C girls made a lovely poster about her! Heather’s poster about her Grandad, Anaya’s about her Dad and Anjalie’s poster about Evelyn Glennie were really well presented as well.
Sciennes Learner Participation 13.9.2019
On Friday 13th September 2019, Primary Seven pupils helped introduce our Learner Particiipation Groups for the year. Last year. seeking to expand participation, we replaced our Pupil Council with six pupil groups. Following consultation with pupils and staff, this year pupils will contribute to school improvement priorities within their four House Groups, from P2-P7. We reminded everyone about our competition to design new House logos, which can be handed in to House Leaders on a piece of paper with name and class on the reverse.
Primary Sevens congratulated everyone on their Swimathon and fundraising efforts and thanked all the parent organisers, especially Catherine McCormack, for a fantastic event.
Sciennes Values 23.8.19
On Friday 23rd August we revisited our School Values of Respect, Inclusion, Teamwork and Effort and gave reminders of our school rules.
Our dear and wonderful friend, comedian Patrick Monahan, had hoped to be able to join us briefly at Assembly but his schedule was extremely busy. One of the UK's hardest working and talented comedians, we wish him well and thank him for kindly thinking of us. Act quickly try to catch his show #goals at the Gilded Balloon at 8pm this weekend!
Great to welcome P4 to their first upper school Assembly and Mr Hunter encouraged everyone to show respect for all the major improvements to school property.
Pupils were reminded to share their achievements with us so we can share them at future assemblies.
Mr Hunter asked pupils to remind families about the road closure at drop off and pick up times. We look forward to our first Cycle to School Day of the year next Friday 30th August and thank P7 Class Teacher Miss McGrouther for organising.
Sciennes End of Term Assembly 2019
Once a year we all come together in the Hall - twenty two classes from Primary 1 to Primary 7 - for our End of Year Assembly, led for the first time this year by Headteacher Mr Andrew Hunter.
A particularly busy year at Sciennes Primary School has seen significant improvements to facilties and we are grateful that everyone in the community has supported one another to manage the challenges of extensive builiding works. Very well done to our pupils, staff and families for all their efforts, working so hard together to make 2018-2019 such a successful year, rounded off with a stunning musical "The Adventures of Super Stan" by our marvellous Primary Seven. All good wishes and fond farewell to Mrs Hogan, Miss Ross, Ms Pearmain and Mrs Gibb and we wish everyone a restful and happy summer.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
