Who was he?

mathematician
and scientist.
A Second

Born 23 June 1912
Alan’s parents worked
in India.
Alan and his brother
were looked after by
family friends in
England.

A machine that
could read codes
(an early version
of a computer).
World War Two
During the Second World War,
Nazi Germany sent encrypted
messages.
To win the war, people
needed to decode these
messages.
A team at Bletchley Park began
to try decoding the messages.

Enigma Machine
Alan Turing and his
team worked out the
meaning of secret
messages during
World War Two.
Alan worked out where and when the enemy
was planning to attack.
OBE Medal
Turing was awarded the OBE
(Order of the British Empire)
in 1946.
Without Turing’s code breaking the
war would have lasted much longer.
Died 7 June 1954
Alan was arrested
and severely
punished because
he was gay.
Nowadays people
can love whoever
they want.
Alan Turing will
be remembered
as the father of
the computer
and as
someone who
saved millions
of lives with his
work.
