What DoesIt Meanto Be Deaf?
Deafness and hearingloss canmean different things to different people.
People use various words and terms to describe how theyview their own
deafness or hearingloss.
Thegeneral term 'deaf people' can be used to describe people with anyamount of hearingloss.
Being deaf can mean:
• Finding it difficult to hear.
• Not being able to hearcertain sounds – high pitch, low pitch, sounds nearby or far away.
Profoundly deaf -Sign language maybe the person’s preferred method
of communication.
Severely deaf - People will usually need hearingaids and may relyon lip reading or sign languageto
communicate. Sign language may bethe person’s preferred method of communication.
Moderately deaf -People mayneed to use hearingaids.
Mildly deaf - People may find it difficult to follow speech in noisy situations.

What Causes Deafness?
Some people are deaf when theyare born.

Deafness happens whenthe ear is not workingcorrectly.
How DoDeaf PeopleCommunicate?
People who aredeaf can communicatein manydifferent ways such as using:
Hearing aids, hearingbands, induction loops, cochlear implant
Sign language – gestures, fingerspelling
Lip reading
Facial expressions and gestures
Written language, e.g. Email, text, letter.
Deaf or hearingimpaired people mayuse sign language to communicate.

communicate.
It is a visual language whichuses gestures, facial
expression and body language.
Hearing people also use sign language to communicate
with their deaf friends or family members.
Fingerspelling is a wayto spell out words using
handshapes for letters of the alphabet.
