The Democratic Party Split Of 1860 Over The Slavery Issue
The Democratic Party split in 1860 over the slavery issue. The Democrats from the Northern states
were against slavery or at least the expansion of slavery in the new territories while the Democrats
from the Southern states wanted to preserve slavery in their states and were for extending it in the new
territories. On April 23, 1860, the Democrats met in Charleston, South Carolina with the goals of
finalizing their platform and nominating a presidential candidate. In the North the Democratic
candidate was the moderate Stephen Douglas. Voters in the South chose John Breckenridge, a
defender of Southern rights . The Southern Democrats hated Douglas, although he was not completely
opposed to slavery in the West, he wanted to limit the institution s use in the territories, by initiating
popular sovereignty. A key play by Lincoln in the Lincoln Douglas Debates in 1858 helped the
Southerners realize this. Because the Democrats were split between different candidates and the
Republican Party was united behind Abraham Lincoln, they won more electoral votes. Therefore,
Lincoln became president.
Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president. It was his election that convinced South Carolina
to secede from the Union. Though not an abolitionist, Lincoln was an opponent of slavery and
determined to use all means at his disposal to stop its spread. Because the Republican Party was an
anti slavery party, South Carolina, along with several other states, saw the election of Lincoln

Psychoanalytical Theory Essays
Psychoanalytical Theory Sigmund Freud (1856 1939) was the first person to initiate the thought of
psychoanalysis. According to Friedlander (1947), classical Freudian psychoanalytic explanations of
delinquency focus on abnormalities or disturbances in the individual s emotional development from
early childhood. Since then many people have amended his original writings and presently there are
numerous versions Freud s original psychoanalytical theory. Many of these recent versions are similar
to the original version with the exception that they are updated to current times. Few new models are
extremely different from Freud s theory. Adler, Mueller, and Laufer (2004) describe the ... Show more

86). The psychoanalytical theory focuses on the development of personality, the stages of
development and the emotional problems reflecting some unconscious aspects of one s psychological
functioning. Adler, Mueller, and Laufer (2004) base this theory on three principles. First, The actions
and behavior of an adult are understood in terms of childhood development. Second, Behavior and
unconscious motives are intertwined, and their interaction must be unraveled if we are to understand
criminality. Third, Criminality is essentially a representation of psychological conflict (p. 86). Freud
believes that criminality has a lot to do with the structural model of the mind. He breaks the mind
down into three categories; the Id, Ego, and the Superego. The Id is the unconscious seat of irrational,
antisocial, and instinctual impulses which must be controlled and shaped for social adaptation to life
in society (Akers, 1999, p. 50). When newborn babies are born, they have biological drives that are
unaffected by society. The Id can be considered the instructional forces, which focuses around sexual
desires or drives. This is now the time when the infant knows nothing but the pleasure principle and
when tension gets high it will only behave according to the

Urban India vs. Rural India
Globalization has had an astonishing impact on the modern world. It has allowed nations to connect
with other nations through mediums such as the internet, fax machines, music and television.
Globalization has also encouraged companies to take advantage of the knowledge and talents of
people all over the world. Outsourcing has created thousands of job opportunities for developing
nations. The flow of income into developing countries has allowed people to increase their standard of
living (Friedman, 126 150).

Multinational businesses exploit their Indian employees as they do not command the same wages as

Data Description: In both the bleach and vinegar soaked seeds, there was no growth whatsoever;
therefore, there were no trends or changes in seed growth to be accounted for. The beer soaked seeds
did relatively well, growing at a steadily fast pace, and grew more healthily than the other seeds
(besides the control). On the graph, the beer soaked seeds seemed to follow a type of pattern. From
point 1 to 2 and point 2 to 3 it inclined at the same angle. But point 3 to 4 was a larger jump, giving
the line more height, and from point 4 to 5 it also seemed to follow incline that point 3 to 4 made. The

And the answer is that it mainly affected two factors of the experiment; whether the seeds would grow
at all, and if they did grow, how long would they get in a certain amount of time. As the control, the
water soaked seeds grew well, but they were not the focus of this experiment. Out of the 4 groups of
seeds tested, the beer soaked seeds grew the best. The hydrogen peroxide soaked seeds did grow, but
they grew much more slowly. The vinegar soaked seeds at least were able to withstand the soaking
steps, but did not grow when planted. And the bleach soaked seeds were never planted at all because
there were no intact seeds to plant after soaking. This experiment had unexpected results and
interesting outcomes. Radish seeds are not the most durable, but they gave good results that were very
reliable when the experiment concluded. In some cases, experiments like this may go wrong, or the
solutions may not make a big enough impact on the seeds when soaked to find good results from. But
although this procedure was not necessarily foolproof or perfect, it was as reliable and solid as it could
possibly be for a home project with little equipment. Sometimes the things biology is capable of can

The Influence Of The Hippie Subculture
A new Identity for American Youth An essay on how the teenage ideology was influenced by the
Hippie subculture
Born from the social turmoil, and the differing opinions of people during the Vietnam War. The Hippie
movement first gained traction in American Colleges and Universities. These young adults during the
1950s, are considered to be the very first pioneers of the hippie subculture. Through the youths
rebellious nature against the main ideals of society, and the growing popularity of the hippie
subculture, hippies, through the 50s up until the 80s, have managed to cultivate and solidify a new
concept of social behavior in young adults: The teenager. This essay will show us how the hippie

No doubt, John Lennon wrote this song under the influence of the hippie subculture. This song helped
bring awareness to the public and teenagers alike, about the values of the Hippies. Another influential
song of the Hippie era is Fortunate Son by the group Creedence Clearwater Revival. This song is a
protest against the United States involvement in the Vietnam war, as the Hippies saw that the US
Army s involvement in the war as a mistake. Fortunate Son addresses the issue of the discriminating
way the government used forced conscription to recruit new soldiers as they forced the poor
population to fight much more often than people who held more political power. As much as fifty five
percent of the fighting force belonged in the working class. The message this song sends, closely
associates with the Hippie subculture view of the vietnam war. This song, also being very popular to
the teenage population, inspired teenagers to rebel against the government and societal norm, causing
teenagers to become more aware of the Hippie subculture (since rebelling against societal norms was
one of their underlying ethics.) One more artist who contributed to the change of impression in
teenagers is Buffalo Springfield. For what it s worth is another protest song written in 1966. Although
the literal meaning of the song is about hippies protesting a curfew at their favorite

The Morality of Managed Care Essay
The Morality of Managed Care
The preservation of health is a duty according to Herbert Spencer, an English philosopher (Andrews,
1993). Managed care conglomerates provide health coverage for increasing numbers of Americans.
Many critics question whether these businesses provide care dutifully. At the very least, the present
managed care system requires health care providers and recipients to reexamine established principles
underling physician patient interaction. Although health maintenance organizations are commonly
misunderstood, Americans hope these institutions will dampen runaway health care expenditures.
Since HMO s are increasing in number, health care recipients need to examine how established,
ethical principles in America ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike fee for service reimbursement which was normative previous to managed care, HMO s usually
pay doctors and hospitals massive sums up front. These payments are arranged per diem, by
capitation, or sometimes by fixed salary. Many critics of managed care believe that these
compensation packages are immoral.
What Health Care Is Now
In order to ascertain the merit of managed health care, ethical presuppositions guiding our health care
system require consideration. In the United States, four main principles undergird the way health care
is practiced. These principles are: beneficence, nommaleficence, autonomy and justice. Beneficence is
the obligation of health care providers to render help to people in need. Just as health care workers are
called to provide care, they also have a duty to do no harm. This principle is commonly called
nonmaleficence. At times, the possibility of doing good may result in injury. Therefore, the principle
of beneficence and nonmaleficence do not always concur. Thirdly, the principle of autonomy allows
patients to make choices regarding their health care. In other words, health care providers should
allow patients to make the final decision regarding their treatment plan. Finally, justice refers to the
ethical concept of treating everyone in a

Essay on Lanval and Yonec
Often times in literature the body becomes a symbolic part of the story. The body may come to define
the character, emphasize a certain motif of the story, or symbolize the author s or society s mindset.
The representation of the body becomes significant for the story. In the representation of their body in
the works of Marie de France s lais Lanval and Yonec, the body is represented in opposing views. In
Lanval, France clearly emphasizes the pure beauty of the body and the power the ideal beauty holds,
which Lanval s Fairy Queen portrays. In France s Yonec, she diverts the reader s attention from the
image of the ideal body and emphasizes a body without a specific form and fluidity between the
forms. Yonec focuses on a love not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Fairy Queen controls the dynamics of their relationship. They meet and separate whenever the
Fairy Queen feels the need to. The Fairy Queen s beauty gives her power and control over Lanval. The
concept of beauty as a method of control for women is not something new. Lori Baker Sperry and Liz
Grauerholz discuss the concept of female empowerment through beauty in their article The
Pervasiveness and Persistence of the Feminine Beauty Ideal in Children s Fairy Tale. Baker Sperry
and Grauerholz state that, women willingly engage in beauty rituals and perceive being (or becoming)
beautiful as empowering, not oppressive (712). Baker Sperry and Grauerholz argue that in children s
fairy tales, the female characters see their beauty as their most useful tool and would undergo beauty
rituals to attain this beauty. By being beautiful, the Fairy Queen is able to win the attention and loyalty
of Lanval. Not only does the Fairy Queen receive power in this bond, but also Lanval himself finds
good fortune in the form of physical wealth. To further emphasize the Fairy Queen s beauty and the
power she holds over the court, France uses the series of girls prior to the Fairy Queen s entrance. This
builds a sense of suspense and the fact that the Fairy Queen easily trumps the girls in beauty further
emphasizes her superiority. By emphasizing the Fairy Queen s bodily beauty, France is able to show
the power the Fairy Queen has over Lanval and the court. While

The Rising Sun and Death be not Proud by John Donne Essay
In this essay I will mainly focus on two poems written by John Donne, The Rising Sun and Death be
not proud. These poems were written during the Elizabethan era, which was an era mainly
characterized by love and colonialism, on separate terms of course. These principles often influenced
poets who lived during this period. Their poetry acts as testimonies of their underlying thoughts and
desires. Furthermore, metaphysical poets deliver a more divine and profound perspective to their
poetry. Within their conceits, they manage to engage and delight themselves in deeper movements.
This essay will further discuss how John Donne used death and the sun to his disposal. I will also

Eternal life thus defeats death and throughout the poem, John s strong background of Christianity
allows him to associate death with temporary entities as he refers to death as a state of much pleasure
(7). Death is conceptualized as a phase rather than an element which represents finality. Death is
personified and therefore has no greater power over human beings. Death losses its fearful connotation
and achieves a new meaning that makes it less intimidating and less powerful. The central theme,
introduced quite early within the poem, is the helplessness of death. Throughout the poem the speaker
belittles death and approaches it with such bravery and poise. Donne confronts death by saying it is
not in any regard mighty and dreadful (2), but rather brings much pleasure (7). Death is personified in
the poem, and in this regard, possess no greater power over man. The speaker of the poem is Donne
himself. He uses his literary tools of rhetoric and poetic devices to belittle death. Throughout the
poem, the speaker comes across as being slightly arrogant, but he refuses to show weakness. His
arrogance shows that he is not afraid of death as he demands death not to be proud. Donne takes the
association of death and sleep, and reinvents this comparison to a greater effect. He describes sleep as
being pictures (5) of death and death is no more different or more frightening. He extends this
metaphor throughout the poem. In the second last line of the poem he

Tips For Resolving Conflicts By Mrs. Breed
Solving conflict Conflict can be very hard to deal with. People always assume to use violence, but that
should never be the case. The best way to solve conflict is by staying calm, remaining positive, and
using good communication skills. In Dear, Mrs.Breed who shared notes with people who survived the

Communication and collaboration are two very useful things arguing or not. It is important to

Benefits Of Roundabouts In The City Of Yucaipa
In the city of Yucaipa, back in 2014, a plan was approved for the city to make several roundabouts to
replace stop lights and stop signs along residential areas. They made a plan that would place 5 of these
roundabouts along Avenue E and a few along Yucaipa Blvd. the plan would, in the end, cost them
around $2.3 million (according to a 2013 estimate). Now Calimesa wants to follow in its footsteps and
build 6 new roundabouts along County Line Rd. along with a road restoration project that will cost
well over $16.4 million to complete. The city is calling for Yucaipa to contribute almost $2 million,
while also receiving an $11 million grant from the federal TIGER program. The city will still have to

The city is making a mistake. If they can t afford it, then they need to invest more to bring businesses
and services for the people. That way, they can afford to make such a huge project plan. The mentality
that roundabouts would attract tourists is the wrong one to have. They would not earn back the money
that they cost the city. And while they lessen the impact of car accidents on the road, they cause more
accidents as people are unfamiliar on how to enter or go through a roundabout. And they are
inconvenient or maybe even intimidating for pedestrians with their design. On top of that, they are
disadvantages with the many blind spots that are created, either from the driver s focus or the
inconvenient decorative islands in the center of the intersection. Why are we even making
roundabouts then? I don t know. Well actually I do have an idea why, but it just seems illogical to me.
Possible solution number 1) Just don t build the roundabouts. Simple. Well, not really, the leftover
funds need to go somewhere after all. There is a call to improve the roads in this small town in
Calimesa, and after the last sudden burst of rainfall we received recently, the roads are in some really
bad shape. The funds would be better used to repair the existing roads, and it would likely be less
costly and would require no land

Hicok And Terrell Summary
An important aspect about the readings from Hicok (2000) and Terrell (1999) is that the two of them
were focusing on minority students, who first language is not English. Information about the level of
reading and knowledge about phonemics makes a great difference to understand the type of population
that the researchers were working on.
One thing that I would like that Hicok (2000) share with the readers was to explain the meaning of
ESL B2 students. On page 3, the author mentioned that there were 22 seventh grade students in three
different sciences classes who were ESL B2. I assume that B2 could be Block 2 if the school have its
school year by block. However, that information is not available in the researcher s paper. Hicok
(2000) mentioned the use of quiz and tests as part for describing the qualitative data that the author
was gathering, however, there is no report on this paper about the tests scores of the students. The
author said that more time is needed to analyze the quantitative data about tests and scores.
Regarding ethics, I think that both authors failed in protecting the confidentiality of the students. First,
both studies have been done at Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools District (Hicok, 2000; Terrell,
1999). By knowing the school district, it will be easy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Reflective Essay They Say I Say
The writer starts off with stating the progression of the They Say I Say novel, explaining that once you
read and interpreted the opposing argument, we move onto developing our own argument. One thing
the writer did bring up was the consensus of how people would respond to having to write your own
argument. Bottom line, we all believe we don t know how to do it nor feel confident enough to
interject our own opinion. What we don t realize is we actually can.
My favorite line was that good arguments are not based on more knowledge about the topic but rather
how you can get to the main topic of the issue at hand and then address it. The writer follows with
three main ways to respond to other s arguments which are agreeing, disagreeing or both combined.
These points can help avoid an argument being dragged out or as the saying goes beating around the
bush . Identifying where you stand in your argument can actually make your argument stronger. What
drew me into this piece was that I could identify with this piece. I, too had expressed that I don t feel
comfortable entering what is considered a high powered conversation. Like stated in the piece, I

they want substance. All in all, Identifying with this piece made it easier to comprehend. I believe with
all of the pieces I have analyzed I can identify and incorporate into my own writing. I have now

Social Pressures Reflected in Ginsberg s Howl Essay
Social Pressures Reflected in Ginsberg s Howl
Post World War II America produced a number of images that will be forever imprinted on the minds
of Americans. Such images as television shows like Leave It To Beaver and I Love Lucy, movies such
as An Affair To Remember, and Brigadoon, are watched frequently even in today s society. But in this
world of fairytale movies and the American Dream, what about those who didn t fit into the picture of
perfection and prosperity? These men became the basis of an underground network of dissident
writers, teachers, artists and filmmakers. Often a reaction against the strict standards of normalcy held
by the American public and the bureaucracy of the government, their work not only ... Show more

Such is the same in Howl.
Ginsberg does not spare the innocent reader. When one analyzes the social power of Ginsberg s
statements, one can come easily to the conclusion that society was not exactly welcoming to Ginsberg,
and he reacted to that through his writing, especially in Howl.
The second portion of Howl is commonly considered by critics to be the most complicated for the
average mind to comprehend. In this section, nearly every thing is described as a Moloch. Moloch, in
mythology was a God to whom children were sacrificed. Now, the term is commonly used to describe
anything responsible for destroying innocence. In Part II, Ginsberg describes nearly everything about
American culture to be a Moloch. Even society s viewpoints are Molochs. In a way, Ginsberg is
calling America itself a Moloch, and then continuing to describe parts of the whole.
Moloch whose mind is pure machinery! Moloch whose blood is running money! Moloch whose
fingers are ten armies! Moloch whose breast is a cannibal dynamo! Moloch whose ear is a smoking
tomb! (Ginsberg 21)
America is evil to Ginsberg because of the feelings of hatred and repulsion the society builds in him.
The third section of Howl is a striking contrast to the other two parts.

Maya Angelou s Graduation Day
Words are the building blocks of life. Words are the building blocks of language and communication.
Through words, one can encourage and/or discourage an entire audience. Words can also have the
power to create a sense of identity in humanity. If used poorly, words can establish superiority and
reinforce the subjugation of others. Words set up society and the general chain of command. It is the
power within the words that lends significance to the inspirational speeches and songs held so dearly
in the hearts of many. Due to their significant daily presence, words hold an immense power. In Maya
Angelou s Graduation Day, she carefully describes the intense negative power one man s words have
on an entire community. Angelou also illustrates a very emotional positive power that a boy s words
have in lifting the congregation s spirits up. Words are depicted as powerful because when used in
certain way, they are more than words; they are ideas. Words constantly manipulate emotions. They
weave a tapestry of complex and conflicting feelings throughout the course of daily conversation.
There are many contributing factors to the power of words including, but not limited to, body
language, tone of voice, and eye contact. In some cases, the effect of words can be disheartening, as
evidenced in Graduation Day. When Angelou describes Donleavy s speech in the story, she illustrates
the immediate effects his words have on the African American graduates. The proud graduating class

Ally s Welcome Home-Personal Narrative
Welcome Home It has been fifteen year since the killing of Ally s father. Now her brother, Matthew,
was leaving her to stage four lung cancer. Ally was a twenty eight year old lady, and her skin tone was
white. She had blue eyes and blond hair. Matthew, her brother, was Ally s protector, he was her savior,
and now Ally felt all alone in this dangerous world. She knew that she could not continue their
business by herself. On the day of her brother s funeral, Ally was so determined to go. She was all
dressed in black, and she had her hair nicely pinned up. But right as she was about to leave, she
stopped in the doorway of her front entrance. She panicked at the sight of daylight and fresh air,

Ally darling come out come out wherever you are. Dion chanted. Out of nowhere Ally came out of the
closet and attacked Dion. Then *BANG* the gun had went off. Josh stopped dead in his tracks, but by
this time Josh had already made his way out of the house and was about to leave the front yard. Josh
hoped for Dion to come out of the house, what now seemed so dark, but Dion never did. Ally was the
one who showed up and stood in the doorway, knowing she could not still leave the house. Later that
evening, Ally was arrested and put was into a mental facility. Just like Ally inherited her father s

We Need To Reform Laws Regarding Marijuana Essay
Imagine that your only father is lying in a hospital bed with one of the many life threatening ailments.
The disease has left him with nothing but agonizing pain and he only has a short time to live. Wouldn t
you like to see him live the last weeks of his life not having to deal with the pain? Sure you would,
however, this would only be possible by the use of a drug called marijuana. Cancer patients smoke
marijuana to dispel the nausea and vomiting they get from chemotherapy and to alleviate pre treatment
anxiety. The drug was first recorded as a medicine in Chinese pharmacopoeia in 2727BC (CNN
Interactive). An AIDS patient might use marijuana to improve their appetite, while it also reduces the
muscle pain cause by Multiple Sclerosis. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It wasn t until the 1970 s that this law was questioned and medicinal uses were rediscovered due to the
increase in number of recreational users. On September 6, 1988, the DEA s chief administrative law
judge, Francis L. Young, declared that marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically
active substances known to man. The provisions of the Controlled Substances Act permit and require
the transfer of marijuana from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2. Judge Young s order that the marijuana be
transferred to Schedule 2 was rejected by the DEA (Nida Info Facts). If that s the case then how come
in California they are protected under a proposition 215 and in Arizona a proposition 200. These
propositions permit the use of medicinal marijuana by those in which it is prescribed and if you don t
have a prescription you can get caught by the police with a small quantity without going to jail. Critics
of the Proposition 215 in California say its wording is so vague it virtually legalizes pot for anyone
(Hedman). In my opinion that saves the state a lot of money by not wasting it on keeping potheads in
prison and use it for something California really needs like new roads. So why hasn t this proposition
come up in other states? It might have something to do with the same reason why same sex marriage

Taking a Look at Natioanl Parks
A national park is an area set aside by a nation s government to protect natural beauty, wildlife, or
other remarkable features. Some national parks protect entire environments like coral reefs, deserts,
grasslands, mountain ranges, or rain forests. Today about 1,500 national parks protect about 1.5
million square miles. Theodore Roosevelt had a huge impact on the national parks we know today.
The three I found most interesting include The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Sequoia
National Park, and the Everglades National Park.
Theodore Teddy Roosevelt had a huge impact on the national park system that extended well beyond
his term in office. Teddy Roosevelt first came to the Badlands in September 1883. Big game hunting
had initially brought him to the west, as he spent more time in this area, he became more and more
alarmed by the damage that was being done to the land and the wildlife. After this, conservation
became one of Roosevelt s main concerns. After he became president in 1901, Roosevelt used his
authority to protect wildlife and public lands by creating the U.S. Forest Service. He also established
fifty one federal bird reservations, four national game services, one hundred and fifty national forests,
five national parks and created the Antiquities Act which he used to officially declare eighteen
national monuments. Roosevelt has been called many times our country s Conservation President He
is remembered with a National Park that bears

Tax Evasion Is An Illegal Evasion Of Taxes By Trusts,...
An organized country and government owes a lot of fundamental obligation to the people it governs.
These obligations can take many forms like basic social amenities such good roads, health, security of
lives and properties, shelters, good water, retirement system...etc.
So the government applies taxes on its citizens to pursue the above stated objectives it owns to the
people.
The citizens of Lebanon living under the guardianship of the government owe also the government
many obligations, such as paying taxes...
Tax according to C.S Ola is defined as: non punitive yet compulsory levy on the income and
properties of individuals and organizations by government and which it does not account for, the
proceeds from the levy on trade the government uses to pursue the accomplishment of some social,
economic and political objective in the interests of its citizens
The tax evasion is the subject matter of this work. Knowing that tax evasion is an illegal evasion of
taxes by trusts, corporations and individuals. Tax evasion usually when the taxpayers misrepresent the
true state of affairs to the tax authorities to minimize their tax liability and may include also dishonest
tax reporting, such as declaring less income, profits, or gains than the amounts actually earned, or they
can do it in another way like overstating deduction.
In Lebanon, the citizens have an uncooperative and unprogressive attitude towards tax payment. But
obviously it is an agreed fact, that payment and collecting

Sorry Not Sorry By Rowan Blanchard Summary
As evidenced by Rookie s article Sorry, Not Sorry, and Rowan Blanchard s essay about white
feminism, Rowan Blanchard is both ambitious and honorable in her ways of learning to stop
apologizing when she does not live up to societal norms for a teenage girl and starting to slowly
become a young feminist icon. Rowan is a 14 year old actress in the Disney Channel show Girl Meets
World , in addition, she is also a writer and activist. Yet from reading any of her writing, she is far
beyond her years and sounds like a woman with college level knowledge. She is an intersectional
feminist, i.e., feminism that includes women of all colors, races, sexuality, and gender spectrum
identities and the oppression they face in society. For such a small girl, she is not afraid to voice her
opinions and educate others on important women s rights topics, shying away from the white
feminism becoming more mainstream daily.
In Rookie s article Sorry, Not Sorry, Blanchard wrote In order to quit apologizing to other people, you
must first and foremost learn to stop apologizing for being yourself to yourself. [..] You can only do
your best YOU. (Blanchard 1). I believe, the concept of loving yourself unapologetically is one of the

Literary Devices In The Lottery
Have you ever heard of the saying, ¨never judge a book by its cover?¨ Or even been deceived by what
may look like the truth? In Shirley Jackson s short story, ¨The Lottery¨, a normal, average village from
the 1940´s has a tradition of playing the lottery, but in reality it is not about winning but about losing
in order to live. In her other short story, ¨The Possibility of Evil¨, the protagonist, Miss Strangeworth,
ends up being the antagonist of her town, causing the ¨evil¨ she believes she is ridding her people of.
In order to make these unpredictable truths hidden in these societies, Jackson uses literary devices
such as diction and irony in the same way to sense the realization of how different the material image
turns into the concealed truth under it all. Foreshadowing, however, reveals differently of how these
stories could end in a not so expected way. Both short stories convince the reader that they are
learning about these towns that are well kept and prospering. Diction is one of the keys to setting the
mood of the story. Words like ¨clear¨, ¨warmth¨, ¨boisterous¨, and ¨blossoming¨ from ¨The Lottery¨
allow one to assume that the setting of this story is someplace that is untroubled, nonviolent
community(The Lottery). What the reader doesn t know is that the people are only gathered together
to find out who will be this year s sacrifice to their god for a good year of farming. Similarly, in ¨The
Possibility of Evil¨, Jackson uses descriptive words like ¨daintily¨, ¨fresh¨, ¨bright¨, and ¨delicately¨ in
the same way as in her other short story to assure the audience that this town is completely ordinary.
Yet, in the end, both stories have words like nervously , humorously , sharply , and breathless from
The Lottery , and harsh , wickedness , and silently from The Possibility of Evil that turn the story into
what was really the veracity of the story(The Lottery, The Possibility of Evil). The mood changes
through the story due to the diction the author chooses. Authors will think of certain connotative
diction that they know will make the reader start to have a deeper relationship/connection with the
work. Another factor in Jackson s short stories that help display the realization of the

Investigating The Effect Of Temperature On Enzyme Activity
INTRODUCTION
Aim:
To investigate how temperature affect enzyme activity.
Background information:
Enzymes are globular proteins (see figure 1) that can be found in all the living cells. They can be used
as biological catalysts by lowering the energy that the chemical reaction requires to occur. Certain
enzymes only catalyze certain biochemical reactions and this property is known as enzyme substrate
specificity. Living organisms can produce many different enzymes. In order to further explain enzyme
substrate specificity, a basic knowledge about active sites on enzymes is required. An active site is
where substrates can be bind to the enzymes and where the biochemical reactions are catalyzed.
Active sites can be found on all enzymes. They are on the surface of enzymes and once the substrate
fits into the active site successfully the biochemical reaction is catalyzed. After the products are
released from the active site, the enzyme can be used again. As has been said above Certain enzymes
only catalyze certain biochemical reactions . However, some enzymes can catalyze more than one
biochemical reaction. This happens when the substrate is closed to the enzyme, and the enzyme
changes the shape of the active site to fit the substrate.
Figure 1(the shape of enzymes)
Enzymes only work within certain temperature and pH ranges as they can be denatured at certain
temperatures and pHs. When the enzyme is denatured, the shape of the active site on the enzyme will
change. Once

Gender Bias In Sports
In society, we see that women and minorities are negatively biased. For women, people are biased
against them because people think that women cannot do a job that is considered a man`s job, or they
aren`t strong enough to do specific tasks. Women are judged when they are playing sports like soccer
because reporters would ask them how is it like playing with other girls? It s as their almost saying,
Are you ok with girls that might be lesbian? There is also a bias for minorities as well because of there
is a society filled with the same race or gender, and then people from all over the world start to
accumulate, some people might fear that their jobs are at stake because the minority are trying to
assimilate to society and are trying to find jobs that are worthy for them to succeed in. Even though
for minorities, you see them areas of work, they are starting to expand their horizon and make a name
for themselves not just limited to specific jobs. Letting this go entirely probably won`t happen but if
society learns to corporate with different cultures and backgrounds, they are small steps to be made
but society has to start somewhere.
The idea that I will be focusing on is sports and how the industry has the power to dictate who will
likely win in the sport based on the culture of the specific game. Even though sports have come a long
way from how it was observed in the past, the players who are in a higher class than other players
usually have the upper hand and win.

Plato Homosexual Love Essay
deal with concepts of homosexual love. Sappho, the only ancient Greek female author whose work
survived, talks from the female point of observation, whereas Plato s work concentrates on the idea of
love among males. Though both of their perspectives are similar in ways such as their ideas of
physical attraction and desire, Plato s work creates a better understanding of the nature of love then
Sappho s ideas. This understanding will be shown with three arguments and counter arguments in
order to demonstrate the dominance of Plato over Sappho. It will than be concluded with an overview
of the main idea and a recap of the three arguments made for Plato.
In the symposium, Pausanias (Greek geographer) conveys the second part which talks about a few of
the societal standards representing gay (homoerotic) relationships. The way that a companion (an
older man) and his lover ( a younger man) may act towards each other is largely based on society s
ethical code. It is shown that the tradition of this relationship is pursuer to the pursued; the older man

Plato s work can be summarized by that the goal is essentially intellectual satisfaction, while Sappho s
objectives are directly linked with physical beauty and desire for physical attraction. Plato s work
provides a better understanding of love because the homoerotic relationship between an older man and
younger man creates positivity because it expands the virtue in the older man and the wisdom in the
younger man. Secondly, Pausanias shows the moral aspects are important within homoerotic love
because they are a guide to the right and wrong ways to satisfy desire. Lastly, when you find you re

A Dream About Final Exams in Wislawa Szymborsk s Poem...
Wislawa Szymborska poem Brueghel s Two Monkeys starts out in a strange way. It begins out by
what the author dreams about final exams (1). Oddly, what she sees in her dream is two monkeys,
chained to the floor (2). The poem is about the human conditions in different settings of mankind. The
monkeys are the things that of the poets dream about the exam. The monkeys are a symbol of the
suffering of mankind based on the chains through the unpredictable events. As said in the last stanza,
One monkey stares and listens with a mocking disdain (7), while the other seems to be dreaming away
(8). The poem is full of metaphors that get the reader thinking about what it means in respect to what
the author is addressing. Reality has junctions in which one is peaceful while the other is harsh. In the
poem Brueghel s Two Monkeys by Wislawa Szymborska, we will look at representation of human
condition in a certain event. We will examine the human conditions through exams, history, and
solution.
In the poem, when it comes to exams it shows a great deal of decision making. In the first stanza of
the poem it show a significantly note of assessment. The part where the two monkeys were chained to
the floor, sit on the windowsill (2), the line after states the sky behind them flutters (3). The monkeys
are being assessed in beginning of the poem. The part of where the monkeys sit on the windowsill (2)
illustrates the idea of whether one should stay in the position of where

The Democrats from the Northern states were against slavery or at least the expansion of slavery in the new territories while the Democrats from the Southern states wanted to preserve slavery in their states and were for extending it in the new territories. On April 23, 1860, the Democrats met in Charleston, South Carolina with the goals of finalizing their platform and nominating a presidential candidate. In the North the Democratic candidate was the moderate Stephen Douglas. Voters in the South chose John Breckenridge, a defender of Southern rights . The Southern Democrats hated Douglas, although he was not completely opposed to slavery in the West, he wanted to limit the institution s use in the territories, by initiating popular sovereignty. A key play by Lincoln in the Lincoln Douglas Debates in 1858 helped the Southerners realize this. Because the Democrats were split between different candidates and the Republican Party was united behind Abraham Lincoln, they won more electoral votes. Therefore, Lincoln became president. Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president. It was his election that convinced South Carolina to secede from the Union. Though not an abolitionist, Lincoln was an opponent of slavery and determined to use all means at his disposal to stop its spread. The psychoanalytical theory focuses on the development of personality, the stages of development and the emotional problems reflecting some unconscious aspects of one s psychological functioning. Second, Behavior and unconscious motives are intertwined, and their interaction must be unraveled if we are to understand criminality. Third, Criminality is essentially a representation of psychological conflict (p. 86). Freud believes that criminality has a lot to do with the structural model of the mind. He breaks the mind down into three categories; the Id, Ego, and the Superego. The Influence Of The Hippie Subculture A new Identity for American Youth An essay on how the teenage ideology was influenced by the Hippie subculture Born from the social turmoil, and the differing opinions of people during the Vietnam War. Managed care conglomerates provide health coverage for increasing numbers of Americans. Many critics question whether these businesses provide care dutifully. At the very least, the present managed care system requires health care providers and recipients to reexamine established principles underling physician patient interaction. Unlike fee for service reimbursement which was normative previous to managed care, HMO s usually pay doctors and hospitals massive sums up front. These payments are arranged per diem, by capitation, or sometimes by fixed salary. Many critics of managed care believe that these compensation packages are immoral. What Health Care Is Now In order to ascertain the merit of managed health care, ethical presuppositions guiding our health care system require consideration. In the United States, four main principles undergird the way health care is practiced. These principles are: beneficence, nommaleficence, autonomy and justice. Beneficence is the obligation of health care providers to render help to people in need. Just as health care workers are called to provide care, they also have a duty to do no harm. This principle is commonly called nonmaleficence. At times, the possibility of doing good may result in injury. Therefore, the principle of beneficence and nonmaleficence do not always concur. Thirdly, the principle of autonomy allows patients to make choices regarding their health care. In other words, health care providers should allow patients to make the final decision regarding their treatment plan. Finally, justice refers to the ethical concept of treating everyone in a ... The body may come to define the character, emphasize a certain motif of the story, or symbolize the author s or society s mindset. The representation of the body becomes significant for the story. In the representation of their body in the works of Marie de France s lais Lanval and Yonec, the body is represented in opposing views. In Lanval, France clearly emphasizes the pure beauty of the body and the power the ideal beauty holds, which Lanval s Fairy Queen portrays. Baker Sperry and Grauerholz state that, women willingly engage in beauty rituals and perceive being (or becoming) beautiful as empowering, not oppressive (712). Baker Sperry and Grauerholz argue that in children s fairy tales, the female characters see their beauty as their most useful tool and would undergo beauty rituals to attain this beauty. By being beautiful, the Fairy Queen is able to win the attention and loyalty of Lanval. Not only does the Fairy Queen receive power in this bond, but also Lanval himself finds good fortune in the form of physical wealth. To further emphasize the Fairy Queen s beauty and the power she holds over the court, France uses the series of girls prior to the Fairy Queen s entrance. This builds a sense of suspense and the fact that the Fairy Queen easily trumps the girls in beauty further emphasizes her superiority. These poems were written during the Elizabethan era, which was an era mainly characterized by love and colonialism, on separate terms of course. These principles often influenced poets who lived during this period. Their poetry acts as testimonies of their underlying thoughts and desires. Furthermore, metaphysical poets deliver a more divine and profound perspective to their poetry. Within their conceits, they manage to engage and delight themselves in deeper movements. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eternal life thus defeats death and throughout the poem, John s strong background of Christianity allows him to associate death with temporary entities as he refers to death as a state of much pleasure (7). Death is conceptualized as a phase rather than an element which represents finality. Death is personified and therefore has no greater power over human beings. Death losses its fearful connotation and achieves a new meaning that makes it less intimidating and less powerful. The central theme, introduced quite early within the poem, is the helplessness of death. Throughout the poem the speaker belittles death and approaches it with such bravery and poise. Donne confronts death by saying it is not in any regard mighty and dreadful (2), but rather brings much pleasure (7). Death is personified in the poem, and in this regard, possess no greater power over man. The speaker of the poem is Donne himself. He uses his literary tools of rhetoric and poetic devices to belittle death. Throughout the poem, the speaker comes across as being slightly arrogant, but he refuses to show weakness. His arrogance shows that he is not afraid of death as he demands death not to be proud. Donne takes the association of death and sleep, and reinvents this comparison to a greater effect. He describes sleep as being pictures (5) of death and death is no more different or more frightening. He extends this metaphor throughout the poem. In the second last line of the poem he ... The mentality that roundabouts would attract tourists is the wrong one to have. They would not earn back the money that they cost the city. And while they lessen the impact of car accidents on the road, they cause more accidents as people are unfamiliar on how to enter or go through a roundabout. Bottom line, we all believe we don t know how to do it nor feel confident enough to interject our own opinion. What we don t realize is we actually can. It is the power within the words that lends significance to the inspirational speeches and songs held so dearly in the hearts of many. • 27. Sorry Not Sorry By Rowan Blanchard Summary As evidenced by Rookie s article Sorry, Not Sorry, and Rowan Blanchard s essay about white feminism, Rowan Blanchard is both ambitious and honorable in her ways of learning to stop apologizing when she does not live up to societal norms for a teenage girl and starting to slowly become a young feminist icon. Rowan is a 14 year old actress in the Disney Channel show Girl Meets World , in addition, she is also a writer and activist. Yet from reading any of her writing, she is far beyond her years and sounds like a woman with college level knowledge. She is an intersectional feminist, i.e., feminism that includes women of all colors, races, sexuality, and gender spectrum identities and the oppression they face in society. For such a small girl, she is not afraid to voice her opinions and educate others on important women s rights topics, shying away from the white feminism becoming more mainstream daily. In Rookie s article Sorry, Not Sorry, Blanchard wrote In order to quit apologizing to other people, you must first and foremost learn to stop apologizing for being yourself to yourself. [..] You can only do your best YOU. (Blanchard 1). I believe, the concept of loving yourself unapologetically is one of the truest forms of ambition a person can have. • 28. Literary Devices In The Lottery Have you ever heard of the saying, ¨never judge a book by its cover?¨ Or even been deceived by what may look like the truth? In Shirley Jackson s short story, ¨The Lottery¨, a normal, average village from the 1940´s has a tradition of playing the lottery, but in reality it is not about winning but about losing in order to live. In her other short story, ¨The Possibility of Evil¨, the protagonist, Miss Strangeworth, ends up being the antagonist of her town, causing the ¨evil¨ she believes she is ridding her people of. In order to make these unpredictable truths hidden in these societies, Jackson uses literary devices such as diction and irony in the same way to sense the realization of how different the material image turns into the concealed truth under it all. Foreshadowing, however, reveals differently of how these stories could end in a not so expected way. Both short stories convince the reader that they are learning about these towns that are well kept and prospering. Diction is one of the keys to setting the mood of the story. Words like ¨clear¨, ¨warmth¨, ¨boisterous¨, and ¨blossoming¨ from ¨The Lottery¨ allow one to assume that the setting of this story is someplace that is untroubled, nonviolent community(The Lottery). What the reader doesn t know is that the people are only gathered together to find out who will be this year s sacrifice to their god for a good year of farming. Similarly, in ¨The Possibility of Evil¨, Jackson uses descriptive words like ¨daintily¨, ¨fresh¨, ¨bright¨, and ¨delicately¨ in the same way as in her other short story to assure the audience that this town is completely ordinary. Yet, in the end, both stories have words like nervously , humorously , sharply , and breathless from The Lottery , and harsh , wickedness , and silently from The Possibility of Evil that turn the story into what was really the veracity of the story(The Lottery, The Possibility of Evil). The mood changes through the story due to the diction the author chooses. Authors will think of certain connotative diction that they know will make the reader start to have a deeper relationship/connection with the work. Another factor in Jackson s short stories that help display the realization of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Investigating The Effect Of Temperature On Enzyme Activity INTRODUCTION Aim: To investigate how temperature affect enzyme activity. Background information: Enzymes are globular proteins (see figure 1) that can be found in all the living cells. They can be used as biological catalysts by lowering the energy that the chemical reaction requires to occur. Certain enzymes only catalyze certain biochemical reactions and this property is known as enzyme substrate specificity. Living organisms can produce many different enzymes. In order to further explain enzyme substrate specificity, a basic knowledge about active sites on enzymes is required. An active site is where substrates can be bind to the enzymes and where the biochemical reactions are catalyzed. Active sites can be found on all enzymes. They are on the surface of enzymes and once the substrate fits into the active site successfully the biochemical reaction is catalyzed. After the products are released from the active site, the enzyme can be used again. As has been said above Certain enzymes only catalyze certain biochemical reactions . However, some enzymes can catalyze more than one biochemical reaction. This happens when the substrate is closed to the enzyme, and the enzyme changes the shape of the active site to fit the substrate. Figure 1(the shape of enzymes) Enzymes only work within certain temperature and pH ranges as they can be denatured at certain temperatures and pHs. When the enzyme is denatured, the shape of the active site on the enzyme will change. Once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Gender Bias In Sports In society, we see that women and minorities are negatively biased. For women, people are biased against them because people think that women cannot do a job that is considered a man`s job, or they aren`t strong enough to do specific tasks. Women are judged when they are playing sports like soccer because reporters would ask them how is it like playing with other girls? It s as their almost saying, Are you ok with girls that might be lesbian? There is also a bias for minorities as well because of there is a society filled with the same race or gender, and then people from all over the world start to accumulate, some people might fear that their jobs are at stake because the minority are trying to assimilate to society and are trying to find jobs that are worthy for them to succeed in. Even though for minorities, you see them areas of work, they are starting to expand their horizon and make a name for themselves not just limited to specific jobs. Letting this go entirely probably won`t happen but if society learns to corporate with different cultures and backgrounds, they are small steps to be made but society has to start somewhere. The idea that I will be focusing on is sports and how the industry has the power to dictate who will likely win in the sport based on the culture of the specific game. Even though sports have come a long way from how it was observed in the past, the players who are in a higher class than other players usually have the upper hand and win. ... • 35. Plato Homosexual Love Essay deal with concepts of homosexual love. Sappho, the only ancient Greek female author whose work survived, talks from the female point of observation, whereas Plato s work concentrates on the idea of love among males. Though both of their perspectives are similar in ways such as their ideas of physical attraction and desire, Plato s work creates a better understanding of the nature of love then Sappho s ideas. This understanding will be shown with three arguments and counter arguments in order to demonstrate the dominance of Plato over Sappho. It will than be concluded with an overview of the main idea and a recap of the three arguments made for Plato. In the symposium, Pausanias (Greek geographer) conveys the second part which talks about a few of the societal standards representing gay (homoerotic) relationships. The way that a companion (an older man) and his lover ( a younger man) may act towards each other is largely based on society s ethical code. It is shown that the tradition of this relationship is pursuer to the pursued; the older man takes the initiative in the relationship and is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Plato s work can be summarized by that the goal is essentially intellectual satisfaction, while Sappho s objectives are directly linked with physical beauty and desire for physical attraction. Plato s work provides a better understanding of love because the homoerotic relationship between an older man and younger man creates positivity because it expands the virtue in the older man and the wisdom in the younger man. Secondly, Pausanias shows the moral aspects are important within homoerotic love because they are a guide to the right and wrong ways to satisfy desire.
