Social Movement Literature Review
Introduction:
Throughout history, social movement organizations (SMOs) or small groups, loosely connected
by a shared purpose have created transformational change. Charles Tilly defines social movements
as a series of contentious performances, displays and campaigns, by which ordinary people make
collective claims on others (Tilly 2004:3). Examples of these movements are the Women s suffrage,
civil rights and the LGBTQ movement. Similar forces are transforming businesses, military affairs
and religion. SMOs have become an important part of society because these movements provide a
forum for grievances and demands to be heard. These movements also provide citizens an
institution outside of the traditional political system.
The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to better understand the potential connection between the
old and new movements and 2) determine if a certain theory, strategy, method or goal makes a
social movement more or less successful compared to others as it takes more than feelings of
frustration to persuade an individual to sacrifice time, money, relationships on these grievances. As
will be indicated in the literature review, there are several arguments concerning the success of
social movements.
Literature review:
This literature review provides an overview of the major ideas represented in the literature of social
movement theory. McAdam, McCarthy and Zald (1996) offer a framework intended to explain
social movements emergence, development and

Personal Identity Symbols
Each symbol relates to aspects of my personal identity because they represent the things that have
shaped my overall identity. Symbols that represent traditions are the pictures with the family and
the elder and kid. The family represents our tradition of praying before every meal. The elder and
kid symbolize a Filipino gesture called pagmamano which is a sign of respect to someone older,
the person giving the greeting presses his/her forehead on the elder s hand. The symbols that
indicate language are the danger sign and the alphabet. The danger sign represents my first and
second languages, which were Tagalog and English. The alphabet represents the time when I first
came to Canada and began learning English for the first time. Symbols that

Exegesis Of Chapter Three Of The Book Of Job

Exegesis Paper: Job Chapter Three The book of Job is about the incredible life of a man named
Job. He had everything a man could ever need and more. The reason for his prosperity was the fact
that he worshiped God and did everything for Him. So intern God blessed him. Satan then tried to
corrupt Job and make him curse the very person that gave him all of his blessings. God had faith
in Job, He knew he would be able to endure the suffering that was coming his way. The third
chapter of Job we find out that he ends up cursing his own life and wishes he was never born.
However, he never once blames God. In fact he turns to God and praises Him. Chapter three ...

However, the third chapter of Job, and the rest of the book, is written in poetic form. Arend
Remmers says this about Hebrew poetry, Hebrew poetry is not marked by metre and end rhyme
but by pictorial language, parallelisms and partly by rhythm and alliteration or stave rhyme
(compare The Psalms , paragraph 3a Hebrew Poetry ). So, Hebrew poetry was not meant to
rhyme but its main job was to create parallelism and tell a story. Another way parallelism can be
used is by the comparison of Jeremiah and the suffering servant in second Isaiah. The
comparison to the way Jeremiah speaks and the way Job speaks are very similar. They both tell
of death and they actually wish they were never born. So, they use the same type of words to
describe how they are feeling and how they are acting. Another comparison can be made to
second Isaiah with the suffering servant. The servant does everything for others and is a very
good person, but he ends up suffering for the people. This compares to Job very well because Job
was a great man that did good things for others but he ended up losing everything and wishing for
death. They both also remained faithful to God through some pretty tough times. Chapter three
does a very good job of doing this by explaining how Job is feeling about the situation he is

Analysis Of Total Eclipse By Annie Dillard
Description Essay Total Eclipse By Annie Dillard
Annie Dillard s Total Eclipse depicts her own existential crisis while watching the 1979 solar
eclipse. Using metaphors and Stream of Consciousness Writing she details her own dissociative
hallucination.
She begins her work by describing her morning, comparing it to an avalanche, It had been like
dying, She wrote. that sliding down the mountain pass. It had been like the death of someone,
irrational, that sliding down the mountain pass and into the region of dread. IT was like slipping
into fever, or falling down that hole in sleep from which you wake yourself whimpering. Setting the
tone for the essay, death and irrational thoughts filling her mind as it unfolds around her. She
compares the avalanche to death, foreshadowing her own avalanche, an avalanche of the mind. Her
own avalanche happens while she is standing outside on a mountain, watching the eclipse with her
husband. She slips into a dissociative delusion, writing, I looked at Gary; He was in the film.
Everything was lost, He was a platinum print, a dead artist s version of life. I saw on his skull the
darkness of night mixed with the colors of day. My mind was going out; my eyes where receding
the way galaxies recede to the rim of space. Gary was light years away, gesturing inside a circle of
darkness, down the wring end of a telescope. He smiled as if he saw me; the stringy crinkles
around his eyes moved. The sight of him, familiar and wrong,

Literary Analysis Of Absalom And Achiophel By John Dryden
Absalom and Achiophel : the wondrous satirical poem written by John Dryden himself which
features the many different ways of inviting humorous and satirical aspects of the Popish plot to
light. George Villiers, the second duke of Buckingham, was no exception for Dryden. So much so
that the footnotes of the couplets involving George even states that the section on George was The
least political of the satirical portraits in the poem (Noggle, 2226). Claiming that George Villiers, in
Dryden s eyes, was not fit to be a leader in the Popish plotwas an extreme understatement as he
painted an overwhelmingly satirical image of how George was not only incapable of making an
impact in the Popish plot, but is upright a fool to society. Dryden, in the process of painting this
satirical imagery, also uses George as an example of showing consequentialism in action.
In Absalom and AchitophelDryden begins with writing how George Villier only positive
credential of being part of the popish plot is that he comes from his royalty in Buckingham as
his other credentials lack in uniqueness when compared to the other members of society. He
eludes that George Villier became a chief of the Popish plot because he was one of the princes of
the land (543). Ironically, however, this is followed up by Dryden describing him as A man so
various, that he seemed to be / Not one, but all mankind s epitome (545 546). Claiming him to be a
chief in this context is ironic in the sense that he

Persuasive Essay On Driving
On October 6th, 2011 I was scheduled at 8:45 am to take my driver s license exam. I had been
preparing for this day the moment I received my temps six months prior. Instead of my
grandfather drive me to his home from high school every day, I demanded to start driving us
home. When my mom would come home late at night to pick me up from my grandparents
house to take me to my actual home I would drive us too. I was relentless when it came to
practicing driving. On late nights, I would take my future car, a 98 two door ford to a soybean
field behind my house and practice parallel parking. Although this may seem like overkill,
driving was something I wanted more than anything. You see, there were many reasons I
wanted to drive so bad, one, because of the freedom it would give me and two, I wanted to be
able to see something I had put so much time and effort into become a reality. It was not the
same as studying for a test, it was a life skill that would come in handy almost every day of my
life. At this point my life was not how I had pictured it being, and when I compared it to others
in my peer circle I realized how much of my life I had missed out on due to my father s parenting
style, my mother s inability to stand up for herself, and a series of other unfortunate events that
never seemed to let up. Up until the second grade I thought all kids went through what I went
through, dealing with an incarcerated father, who, when out of jail would be drunk for long periods

Effects Of Mr Keating
The relationship between Mr. Keating, and the boys was the basis for many events in this movie,
such as the reformation of the Dead Poets Society or the D.P.S, and the eventual dismissal of Mr.
Keating. Mr. Keating was a very unique teacher that had a unique teaching method, and these facts
contributed to the new way of thinking the boys had decided on. The boys decided to live like
they never had before and this lead to both sad, and happy events through out the movie. The close
connection that Mr. Keating had with his students made him the perfect scape goat for the schoolto

movie were directly connected to Mr. Keating, the D.P.S, and the boys. The analyzing of the

Policy Issues For Improving Monitoring And Evaluation Of...
Policy Issues for Improving Monitoring and Evaluation of Agricultural Programmes
To improve monitoring and evaluation of agricultural programmes in Nigeria, the following policy
issues must be addressed. The questions of what should be monitored or evaluated, when should
monitoring / evaluation be carried out, who should monitor/evaluate and the methodology to be
adopted in any project and the tools for monitoring and evaluation should be included in any
agricultural programmes/policy.
When should monitoring / evaluation be carried out?
Monitoring and Evaluation should be integrated into every activity of the agricultural
programmes. It is essential to develop and establish a habit of doing casual evaluation of the
highest possible quality for almost all processes and products involved in the various segments of
the programme. The time for monitoring and evaluation should be well budget and made part and
parcel of the programme planning process. Systematic evaluation usually requires a greater
expenditure of resources than normal and hence, it should be done when the resources are available
and the use of such evaluation justifies the cost. Most agricultural programmes in Nigeria lack this
important aspect. This is not well stated in most projects/programmes. The few that carried out
monitoring activities do so when they feel like. When proper monitoring / evaluation are carried out
as at when due, it helps in improving the programme.
What should be monitored or

Atticus is his own definition of brave because he ll put others before him and he ll defend
anyone the best he can no matter what race. Atticus shows his bravery through his actions all
throughout the book. Atticus shows his bravery because he ll put others before himself in many
situations. Examples of this are when he agrees to defend Tom even though he knows he has
very slim chances to win the case. He s also a single father in the 1930s with 2 kids. Another
example is when his kids showed up when the lynch mob showed up outside the jail to kill Tom
Robinson, Atticus started to worry because now he had to protect both the kids and Tom

Defining a Hurricane Essay
Defining a Hurricane
A hurricane is a tropical storm that has winds of 74 miles per hour or more. The winds can
sometimes reach up to 155 miles per hour. Another characteristic of hurricanes is their massive size
that measures from 200 to 300 miles in diameter. In the center of each storm there is what is called
the eye of the storm (Image to Right). The eye of the storm is usaually between 20 30 miles and
is the calmest part of the storm. Winds here may only be 74 miles per hour. Some hurricanes can
last for two weeks or more over open water and can run a path across the entire Eastern Seaboard.

Some hurricanes can even develop in the winter time, but that rarely happens, only three have been
recorded since 1886.
Hurricanes are not only very violent storms but they are also very dangerous. The primary
dangers of the storm are the rain/flooding, high winds, the occasional tornado, flying debris from
buildings and nature (i.e. trees), and the storm surges . Storm surges can be between 50 to 100
miles high. These surges may be even more dangerous than any of the other hazards because they
can wipe out an entire community near the ocean. Nine out of ten deaths are caused by such
surges and annually 17 people die from hurricanes in the United States alone. The deadliest
hurricane in United States history was at Galveston Island, called the Texas Storm of 1900. It was
a Category 4 hurricane and there was more than 6,000 deaths occured with this storm.

hurricane originated off the West Coast of Africa in early August, 1992. On August 17, 1992 it

Com Toibin Brooklyn Analysis
In Colm Toibin s Brooklyn, there are many opportunities for the protagonist Eilis Lacey that are
handed to her. Despite these opportunities, the path of least resistance is chosen. Many hardships
are faced every day. Eilis feels that she has no other options but to take what s given to her and be
happy with it. Not only are her options a mess but so is her lovelife. Relationships can be difficult;
but between Eilis and Tony, the much needed effort is not being put in. An unhappy and
unfulfilled life, is led when Eilis realizes that she has not done anything for herself, only to please
others. Eilis was faced with many tough decisions, these were taking without forethought.
Therefore, Eilis s life was not fulfilled in the way it could have been.
Eilis has a problem with speaking her mind; she does not want to make anyone angry with her,
even if this leaves her miserable. Eilis feels extremely silent with some of her opinions She
wished she could think of something smart to say to Miss Kelly without being openly rude.
Instead, she remained silent. (Toibin 6). Remaining silent is a big problem, especially if it puts
personal wants on the back burner. In Eilis s case this is exactly what happens. Eilis takes what
is given to her without question In the United States, he said, There would be plenty of work for

Class Ethics And Values At Jackson State University
When I first entered the field of social work at Southwest Mississippi Community College, I was
clueless as to what the social work profession entailed. At Southwest MS Community College, we
mostly focused on perquisites and a few classes related to family. After, leaving Southwest MS
Community College and entering Jackson State University, I realized my previous college did not
teach me anything relating to the field of social work. However, my entry in my first class Ethics
and Values at Jackson State University taught me about the six core values in social work, such as
service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships,
integrity and competence. Upon, my entry into JSU, Bachelors of Social Work (BSW) program,
I understood that social work was not about assisting only children. There is masses of people
who need, social workers to advocate for better housing, food, medical care and other basic
necessities to survive everyday life.
The question asked what is my understanding of the social work profession , social work is a
field, where people are compassionate about helping others live comfortably within their
environment. By providing them with services needed within that moment. It serves as a guide to
people, who are not aware of resources that is available to them. The social work profession
generates the needs and emotions of other people. I imagine the social work profession as a

and $970 billion in revenue in the year 2006 (Langwith, Renewable Energy is Economically ).
The American Solar Energy Society says by 2030 it could generate up to $4.5 trillion in revenue

Sparta Swot Analysis
Most societies that focus on one specific thing is pretty much setting themselves up to crumble to
the ground. One example is Sparta, Sparta lacked many many things to be a successful society,
which is why they only lasted 300 years. Sparta lacked education, they abused their children, and
took them away to harsh army training at such a young age. Spartabanned all foreign education
from their city state, and they only taught reading and writing for purely practical reasons, they
also never let in any foreign teachers into Sparta to teach. They abused their children too, every
time a child was caught stealing food, which they encouraged and said it was ok, they would whip
them almost to the point of death. The strengths in Sparta never even had a chance at outweighing
the weaknesses for those reasons. To start off, Spartans were never taught formal education, Sparta
focused on their military almost all the time, they were taught practical reading and writing, and
were never allowed foreign teachers and were never allowed to travel to other places. It says in

This is completely wrong and kids starve because of the harsh conditions in the agoge system of

The Division Between Art and Popularity in Television
The lines of traditional art have blurred over the years as new artistic movements have appeared
and transformed the notion of what is considered art. As these movements have revolutionized the
art world, popular culture has branched off from art, causing a shift; art is no longer a
representation of popular culture and visa versa. In contemporary society art doesn t exist to win
any popularity contests, it exists to please the viewer, and is often deemed art by highly acclaimed
art critics who don t speak from a popular culture standpoint. Art highly regarded by critics often
goes against the grain and makes a statement, while popular culture is dictated by what the general
public likes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When this idea is utilized in television, a large divide appears between shows that display artistic
elements and series that become the newest popular sensation. This phenomenon is apparent
when comparing the HBO show Girls, with the ever popular ABC Family drama Pretty Little

abide by social norms. Pretty Little Liars on the other hand follows a generic and predicable
script, complete with plot holes and lackluster characters devoid of diversity. The fact that Pretty
Little Liars reigns more popular than Girls proves that aesthetic appeal is not valued in today s
cultural landscape, uncovering the separation between art and popularity in television. Girls and
Pretty Little Liars represent two different ends of the artistic spectrum; Girls is widely considered
to be art despite its lack of diversity, whereas Pretty Little Liars is more popular yet is associated

Why I Should Take A Shower
Of course Finn hadn t gone in my room, twenty dollars had just dissapeared. Damn, I should

While I was showering I d missed a text from Sky where are you? we re waiting out front
Thankfully the text is only two minutes old, so I have time to hurry a reply, grab my stuff and

The Ideal Household By Xenophon
The purpose of The Ideal Household as told by Xenophon, a student of Socrates, was to show the
reader how an elite Athenian lady lived as well as to show what an ideal marriage looked like.
Xenophon wanted to convey to the readers what he thought an ideal marriage looked like and also
what he generally thought most marriages in Athens were. The overall message of this source is
not explicit in nature, but does offer a subtle yet firm message on how women in Athens were
expected to behave. Wives of elite men were often expected to fully run the household while
dedicating their lives to their husbands and family. The work the women put into their family and
households was a full time job that was usually never noticed or acknowledged outside of the
household. Xenophon conveyed his message of what he thought an ideal marriageand household
was by asking an Athenian gentleman questions about his marriage and life. The man offered
insight into his and his wifes life and he spoke about how he lived a relaxed life while his wife
attended to most if not all the household duties. Xenophon seemed worried about what this man
actually did with his life and the man replied that he does not spend my days indoors, if for no
other reason than because my wife can manage all our domestic affairs without my aid. . ( ) The
man made it very clear that he has in a way trained his wife to run their household while he does
whatever he pleases. Xenophon was very interested by this and wondered

Summary Of Gerald Graff s Hidden Intellectualism
Although many people would agree that Intellectuals are those who stand out academically, Gerald
Graff would think otherwise. Hidden Intellectualism is an essay written by Gerald Graff, where he
shares his beliefs about how the educational system is failing to tap those who are doing
academically poor, yet resembles great potential of intellectualism when it comes to their passion or
interest. Along with this beliefs Patch Adamsis a movie based on a real story, where Hunter Adams
(Patch) who admitted himself on a Psychiatric hospital after trying to commit suicide tries to
redeem himself. After spending a few months in the Psychiatric hospital. Hunter found himself
being hopeless by pills and his counselor. It wasn t until one night he helped his roommate to
conquer his fear, by creating a humor game so he can laugh about his own fears. After that night
he realized that he felt extremely happy helping his roommate that he developed a passion for it,
decides to leave, and go into medical school. However, being in a medical school required a lot of
focused, attention, and memorization, something that Patch didn t do. For Patch being a doctor
required more than just learning and following rules of a book. His belief was to treat patients in a
humanistic way not, comply by the rules of a book.
Gerald Graff s argues that thinking outside the box can also be the new intellectual, which is
supported by the movie Patch Adams by questioning whether the educational system is in a

Sociological Explanations For Gender Differences
Outline and Assess Sociological Explanations for Gender Differences in Crime Rates
Current statistics show that men commit 80% of all crime and women commit only 20%. However
there are arguments to suggest that the statistics highlight an under representation of female
criminality, and there are many sociological arguments to suggest that female criminals are treated
more leniently. On the other hand, some sociologists believe women are treated more harshly when
they commit certain types of crime. This essay aims to assess the reasons for gender differences in
reported crime rates.
Official crime rates are measured by crimes reported and recorded by the police and criminal
justice system, and are collected by the Home Office. Frances Heidensohn (1975) believes that
male criminality is 5 times higher than female criminality, which current data supports. However,
Otto Pollak (1961) was the first sociologist to argue that crime rates for female crime were
inaccurate. He believed that women were treated more leniently by the police and criminal justice
system, which highlighted the under representation of female criminality in the official statistics.
He argued that women were more likely to commit crimes such as petty theft, prostitution and
criminal abortions, which were then likely to be treated more leniently. Pollak s theories have been
widely criticised and may not be relevant today; indeed he failed to take into account the
decriminalisation of abortion in many of the

Civil Litigation Detection Paper
A civil lawsuit involves an individual, business or governmental agency that is seeking relief from
another individual, business or governmental agency. They seek the reimbursement of monetary
damages or equitable relief for harm caused to an individual or group.
Parties to civil suits may choose to have their cases decided by a jury or a judge only. Most cases are
negotiated outside of the courtroom and a settlement agreement between the parties is entered.
When a person, group of people or business entity feels harmed by another usually consults with an
attorney in an effort to resolve the dispute and obtain equitable relief or money damages. The
attorney interviews witnesses and perform legal research. If there is a legitimate cause of action

In criminal cases an individual accused of a serious crime is rarely desirous of arguing a case to
a judge only. An accused and the prosecutor negotiate a mutually satisfactory disposition of the
case without going to trial whereby the defendant usually agrees to plead guilty to a lesser charge

The Aztecs And The Incas
1. Introduction
Imagine living in a world where everything is ruled by how the night sky looked. As the sun starts
to set, the sky starts to get illuminated not by one, but by millions and millions of other stars! This
is what the Aztecs and the Mayas saw every night. Both the Aztec and the Maya were a powerful
and advanced civilization that were created separately from the Western European civilizations and
did an amazing job doing so. Just like many other Ancient Civilizations the night sky plays a
significant role in their society. Astronomy, Religion, culture and architecture are all aligned the
stars.
Both the Aztecs and the Maya originated in what is now the southern part of Mexico and other
parts of Central America. The Maya are the predecessors of the Aztecs and much of their customs
are seen the Aztec culture. But the Maya were not the first; there were the Olmec s, Toltec s, and
the Chichimec s before the Maya and Aztec. Progressively you see that each successive civilization
impacted the next in aspects of the religion and the astronomy.
The astronomy that the Aztecs and the Maya developed was phenomenal. They were both great at
predicting eclipses, as well as being the civilizations with the most accurate synodic periods of the
Moon, Earth, Venus, and Mars at that time period. Clearly these people knew what they were doing
and what they were looking at. Astronomy was such and important piece to their culture that you

Mark Reveal Jesus s Identity in the Gospel of Mark
In the Gospel of Mark, Mark discloses the life of Jesus and his embodiment of God s Kingdom.
Throughout his Gospel, Mark focuses on accurately revealing Jesus identity to his readers, and
explaining why Jesus was destined to die on the Cross. Mark uses his role as an arranger by
employing a diverse array of literary tactics to highlight the lessons of his narrative. One of the
most effective of these devices is intercalation the process of sandwiching one story between the
beginning and ending of a separate story. For most people, this tactic would at first appear as
impractical or senseless; however, through this process Mark is able to convey a deeper meaning
in the lessons he is hoping to share through the life of Jesus, and what it infers about the nature of
God s Kingdom. One of the most notable examples of intercalation in the Gospelof Mark is seen in
Mark 5:21 43: the story of the raising of Jairus twelve year old daughter and the woman who
suffered from hemorrhages. Through the intercalation of these two passages, Mark is able to
express that the boundaries of God s Kingdom expand beyond social status and wealth, and that
faith alone is all that is needed to be a part of His divine realm.
Understanding the significance of several details of Mark 5:21 43 is crucial before fully
understanding the significance of the passage itself. One of these details is location. Throughout
the Gospel of Mark, Jesus spends much of his time traveling to the other side that is,

Students Can Choose More Than One Way
Today, students can choose more than one way to attend school. The ordinary way is by attending
a traditional classroom setting which has been utilized for years. The other option is to attend
school by learning online. This relatively new way of learning is rapidly growing especially with
working adults. Both ways of schooling will allow a studentto earn a degree but there are some
differences between the two.
Learning the traditional way consists of sitting in a classroom for hours on end (Bethel University,
n.d., p.4). A traditional classroom allows the student to correspond with the teacher and classmates
in person. Learning in a traditional classroom setting also means the student will have a physical
text book to transport around and possibly other materials like notebooks, pens, paper, etc. (Bethel
University, (n.d.) The traditional classroom will likely involve class participation, homework,
reading assignments, tests, and possibly a few quizzes.
An online setting allows the student to participate in the course work with more agility. You don t
have to slip into a seat at a particular time of the day or night. (Bethel University, n.d., p. 4). The
student has the ease of completing assignments in the comfort of their own home and must be
disciplined to submit the work before the deadline. It is imperative for an online student to manage
their own schedule because there isn t a set time for the student to login and participate. Online

Renee Descartes Method Of Doubt
Renee Descartes Method of Doubt is an incredibly interesting and mind bending philosophy to
study, in this paper I will be exploring what his method was and the main tool he used for it.
Descartes method begins with a notion that is simple to state but hard to imagine; that
everything around us is not real, it s a scary concept, and a huge one to take hold of so Descartes
introduces a tool that helps to illuminate how much doubt there can be in the world around us.
This tool is that of the evil genius, Descartes proposes that it is entirely possible that our minds
are being controlled by an evil genius that wishes to deceive us into believing that the world
around us is real. Descartes does not say that there is an evil genius; he offers the concept of the

Best Performance Incentive Plan
The best performance incentive plans are the ones that work, of course, but what works for
employees cash or days off might not be what your organization can afford. Incentive plans that are
effective at motivating billers must be affordable and targeted to specific results. Most importantly,
they must be finite that is, not a permanent entitlement.
Put careful thought into the design, goals and timing of any incentive plan big or small. Use these 10
tips to shape your organization s incentives for billers:
1. Recognize that the revenue cycle is a function of many factors

Evaluate annually.
Review your incentive plan s overall results annually against the performance it is supposed to
inspire. In some cases, you may be able to put a cash value on the plan s impact: for example, the
number of reduced denials from practice caused errors times the cost of reworking a denied claim.
Once you reach a goal, such as collecting 100 percent of patient copayments at time of service,
move on to other targets.
10. Consider non monetary awards.
The problem with most financial incentive plans is that they become an expectation, which means
they are no longer motivating better performance but merely maintaining the status quo. Staff may
come to view the additional cash as part of their normal compensation. They may even start
depending on it. After the plan expires, morale (and results) can suffer as staff perceive that you
took something away from them.
You can alleviate many of these issues by sticking to short term plans three to six months. Better
still, consider a non monetary incentive plan. Non monetary awards can work well, and maybe
better than cash awards, because they are perceived as more spontaneous and

The Work Of Art And The Age Of Mechanical Reproduction
According to oxforddictionaries.com the definition of the word media is, The main means of mass

could dispute that they are unnecessary to the development of society. Walter Benjamin argues in,
The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, that with reproducibility of images,

if asked, not many would protest the invention and rise of film, but according to Walter Benjamin,

transformations may seem unnecessary to the development of society, there is a chance that over a

characters in our readings to develop and maintain substance abusehabits and how do these habits
hinder or help their work? One of the most widely known detectives in detective fiction; Sherlock
Holmes has in many of his depictions used drugs, most notably... Show more content on

One could make the argument that it doesn t enhance the genre, that it actually hurts the
productivity of the genre. You could also say that exposing the public to this abuse as depicted
in The Wire and Top of the Lake is a negative thing because it could perpetuate the opioid
epidemic that is killing so many Americans. Another reason why so many writers and producers
may incorporate drug abuse into the genre is that it adds an extra layer the story and it adds to the
overall entertainment factor. Also from my experiences drug abuse scenes can be very graphic and
sad and that can in my case cause the scene or the moment to stick in your head longer and
encourage you to think about the situation

Essay on Psychology Adrian Monk and OCD
Introduction
Adrian Monk, portrayed by actor Tony Shalhoub, is the main character in the USA Network
series MONK. Monk is a former homicide detective for the San Francisco Police Department,
suffering from an anxiety disorder known as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as
numerous phobias. After Monk s wife was murdered, his disorder worsened leading to his
suspension from the police force. When the series opens, Monk works as a private police homicide
consultant and undergoes therapy to overcome his anxiety disorder and phobias. He is assisted by a
private nurse who helps him cope with his disability on the job.
Part One Case Study
Character Background
The episode Happy Birthday Mr. Monk shows that Monk, born October, 17, ... Show more content

These symptoms never emerged in the series; rather, the viewer is led to believe that Mr. Monk
had OCD since he was born. However, the viewer is also informed in conversations with the
police sergeant and with Monk s nurse and therapist that what triggered this disorder was the
murder of his wife. Immediately after his wife died, his disorder worsened.
Outcome of Case
Monk s treatment was to go to Dr. Charles Kroger for psychotherapy that would aid him to cope
with his disorder. In the sessions, Mr. Monk talks about what he did during the day and the goals
he accomplished. The treatment is not entirely effective, but it helps Mr. Monk relax and get all
the stress out. In the long term, Mr. Monk cannot overcome his disorder because he cannot imagine
that he can be cured. In addition, he is not a risk taker, meaning he could never do anything that
would make him uncomfortable. Because of this, there is little hope that he will be able to
completely overcome his disorder. This makes sense because his disorder is inherited, and not
attributed to environmental causes.
Part Two Disease
Diagnostic Criteria
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a pattern of recurring obsessions and compulsions that are
severe enough to be time consuming and interfere with a person s daily functioning. They must
cause marked distress (such as pain or physical harm to the person) or significant impairment.
Usually, they take more than

The Song On Darkness On The Edge Of Town By Bruce Springsteen
Oftentimes musicians draw from their own lives, past and present, to find inspiration for their
music. Sometimes they will pick out past experiences or people to write about, and it makes the
music more personal and interesting. In the case of Bruce Springsteen, he grew up relatively poor
in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and frequently talks about the people he grew up with. Because of
Bruce Springsteens civilian background, he was inspired to write Darkness on the Edge of Town,
a concept album about the struggles of the working class. The first song on Darkness on the
Edge of Town, Badlands , is about the struggles that the working class have to face everyday.
Bruce represents the workingman, the blue collar majority because he grew up in a blue collar
family. This song was a hit because Springsteen s fans felt that they could relate to the lyrics. The
protagonist does not ...give a damn/For the same old played out scenes/Baby, I don t give a
damn/For just the in betweens/Honey, I want the heart, I want the soul/I want control right
now... He is tired of the fact that his life seems to be going nowhere, and at this point he does not
care about the in betweens . All that he wants to do is jump start his life and get some sort of
sense of meaning and power. He wants to be in control of his own life and do what he wants to
do, not what he has to do. Despite the fact that the protagonist wants to be in control of his own
life, there are some setbacks. Talk about a dream, Try

Designing Projects for the Public
Thousands people all over the world share their ideas to create future projects and that project is
in art and animation. It is really wise to start from the very beginning. The process of creating or
even preparing for a big project takes time. In order to make a character or idea come to life one
needs the right tools. This is where the skills in art come in, basically the fun part. Everyone
would like to see their ideas come to life and sharing it with the public. Soon this will lead any
person to create a project that involves gaming and animated television shows. Before starting a
project there are a few things a person may need. A character may be the important thing but there
are other factors that are far more important. What would the character do or what environment
would it be placed in? The Developer also has to think about the storyboard which involves
writing. Every project needs to start with a story (How a Game pg.1). A person can make up their
own story and can also receive help from anyone assisting in the project. Everyone may be
inspired by something they have seen which gives them many ideas for a good story. it is
important for the team to come up with a decision so they can know what fits. Once it is decided
the team will start to work on the storyboard (How a Game pg.2).

  • 2. Social Movement Literature Review Introduction: Throughout history, social movement organizations (SMOs) or small groups, loosely connected by a shared purpose have created transformational change. Charles Tilly defines social movements as a series of contentious performances, displays and campaigns, by which ordinary people make collective claims on others (Tilly 2004:3). Examples of these movements are the Women s suffrage, civil rights and the LGBTQ movement. Similar forces are transforming businesses, military affairs and religion. SMOs have become an important part of society because these movements provide a forum for grievances and demands to be heard. These movements also provide citizens an institution outside of the traditional political system. The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to better understand the potential connection between the old and new movements and 2) determine if a certain theory, strategy, method or goal makes a social movement more or less successful compared to others as it takes more than feelings of frustration to persuade an individual to sacrifice time, money, relationships on these grievances. As will be indicated in the literature review, there are several arguments concerning the success of social movements. Literature review: This literature review provides an overview of the major ideas represented in the literature of social movement theory. Exegesis Of Chapter Three Of The Book Of Job Jake Collinsworth, Joey Filosa, Tyler Maglwy Professor Koors Theology 106 22 May, 2015 Exegesis Paper: Job Chapter Three The book of Job is about the incredible life of a man named Job. He had everything a man could ever need and more. The reason for his prosperity was the fact that he worshiped God and did everything for Him. So intern God blessed him. Satan then tried to corrupt Job and make him curse the very person that gave him all of his blessings. God had faith in Job, He knew he would be able to endure the suffering that was coming his way. The third chapter of Job we find out that he ends up cursing his own life and wishes he was never born. However, he never once blames God. In fact he turns to God and praises Him. Chapter three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the third chapter of Job, and the rest of the book, is written in poetic form. Arend Remmers says this about Hebrew poetry, Hebrew poetry is not marked by metre and end rhyme but by pictorial language, parallelisms and partly by rhythm and alliteration or stave rhyme (compare The Psalms , paragraph 3a Hebrew Poetry ). So, Hebrew poetry was not meant to rhyme but its main job was to create parallelism and tell a story. Another way parallelism can be used is by the comparison of Jeremiah and the suffering servant in second Isaiah. The comparison to the way Jeremiah speaks and the way Job speaks are very similar. They both tell of death and they actually wish they were never born. So, they use the same type of words to describe how they are feeling and how they are acting. Another comparison can be made to second Isaiah with the suffering servant. The servant does everything for others and is a very good person, but he ends up suffering for the people. This compares to Job very well because Job was a great man that did good things for others but he ended up losing everything and wishing for death. They both also remained faithful to God through some pretty tough times. Chapter three does a very good job of doing this by explaining how Job is feeling about the situation he is ... Her own avalanche happens while she is standing outside on a mountain, watching the eclipse with her husband. She slips into a dissociative delusion, writing, I looked at Gary; He was in the film. Everything was lost, He was a platinum print, a dead artist s version of life. I saw on his skull the darkness of night mixed with the colors of day. My mind was going out; my eyes where receding the way galaxies recede to the rim of space. Gary was light years away, gesturing inside a circle of darkness, down the wring end of a telescope. • 6. Literary Analysis Of Absalom And Achiophel By John Dryden Absalom and Achiophel : the wondrous satirical poem written by John Dryden himself which features the many different ways of inviting humorous and satirical aspects of the Popish plot to light. George Villiers, the second duke of Buckingham, was no exception for Dryden. So much so that the footnotes of the couplets involving George even states that the section on George was The least political of the satirical portraits in the poem (Noggle, 2226). Claiming that George Villiers, in Dryden s eyes, was not fit to be a leader in the Popish plotwas an extreme understatement as he painted an overwhelmingly satirical image of how George was not only incapable of making an impact in the Popish plot, but is upright a fool to society. Dryden, in the process of painting this satirical imagery, also uses George as an example of showing consequentialism in action. In Absalom and AchitophelDryden begins with writing how George Villier only positive credential of being part of the popish plot is that he comes from his royalty in Buckingham as his other credentials lack in uniqueness when compared to the other members of society. He eludes that George Villier became a chief of the Popish plot because he was one of the princes of the land (543). Ironically, however, this is followed up by Dryden describing him as A man so various, that he seemed to be / Not one, but all mankind s epitome (545 546). Instead of my grandfather drive me to his home from high school every day, I demanded to start driving us home. When my mom would come home late at night to pick me up from my grandparents house to take me to my actual home I would drive us too. I was relentless when it came to practicing driving. On late nights, I would take my future car, a 98 two door ford to a soybean field behind my house and practice parallel parking. Although this may seem like overkill, driving was something I wanted more than anything. You see, there were many reasons I wanted to drive so bad, one, because of the freedom it would give me and two, I wanted to be able to see something I had put so much time and effort into become a reality. It was not the same as studying for a test, it was a life skill that would come in handy almost every day of my life. At this point my life was not how I had pictured it being, and when I compared it to others in my peer circle I realized how much of my life I had missed out on due to my father s parenting style, my mother s inability to stand up for herself, and a series of other unfortunate events that never seemed to let up. When should monitoring / evaluation be carried out? Monitoring and Evaluation should be integrated into every activity of the agricultural programmes. The Ideal Household By Xenophon The purpose of The Ideal Household as told by Xenophon, a student of Socrates, was to show the reader how an elite Athenian lady lived as well as to show what an ideal marriage looked like. Xenophon wanted to convey to the readers what he thought an ideal marriage looked like and also what he generally thought most marriages in Athens were. The overall message of this source is not explicit in nature, but does offer a subtle yet firm message on how women in Athens were expected to behave. Wives of elite men were often expected to fully run the household while dedicating their lives to their husbands and family. The work the women put into their family and households was a full time job that was usually never noticed or acknowledged outside of the household. The man offered insight into his and his wifes life and he spoke about how he lived a relaxed life while his wife attended to most if not all the household duties. • 25. Sociological Explanations For Gender Differences Outline and Assess Sociological Explanations for Gender Differences in Crime Rates Current statistics show that men commit 80% of all crime and women commit only 20%. However there are arguments to suggest that the statistics highlight an under representation of female criminality, and there are many sociological arguments to suggest that female criminals are treated more leniently. On the other hand, some sociologists believe women are treated more harshly when they commit certain types of crime. This essay aims to assess the reasons for gender differences in reported crime rates. Official crime rates are measured by crimes reported and recorded by the police and criminal justice system, and are collected by the Home Office. Frances Heidensohn (1975) believes that male criminality is 5 times higher than female criminality, which current data supports. However, Otto Pollak (1961) was the first sociologist to argue that crime rates for female crime were inaccurate. He believed that women were treated more leniently by the police and criminal justice system, which highlighted the under representation of female criminality in the official statistics. He argued that women were more likely to commit crimes such as petty theft, prostitution and criminal abortions, which were then likely to be treated more leniently. Pollak s theories have been widely criticised and may not be relevant today; indeed he failed to take into account the decriminalisation of abortion in many of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both the Aztec and the Maya were a powerful and advanced civilization that were created separately from the Western European civilizations and did an amazing job doing so. Throughout his Gospel, Mark focuses on accurately revealing Jesus identity to his readers, and explaining why Jesus was destined to die on the Cross. Mark uses his role as an arranger by employing a diverse array of literary tactics to highlight the lessons of his narrative. One of the most effective of these devices is intercalation the process of sandwiching one story between the beginning and ending of a separate story. For most people, this tactic would at first appear as impractical or senseless; however, through this process Mark is able to convey a deeper meaning in the lessons he is hoping to share through the life of Jesus, and what it infers about the nature of God s Kingdom. One of the most notable examples of intercalation in the Gospelof Mark is seen in Mark 5:21 43: the story of the raising of Jairus twelve year old daughter and the woman who suffered from hemorrhages. Through the intercalation of these two passages, Mark is able to express that the boundaries of God s Kingdom expand beyond social status and wealth, and that faith alone is all that is needed to be a part of His divine realm. Understanding the significance of several details of Mark 5:21 43 is crucial before fully understanding the significance of the passage itself. One of these details is location. This relatively new way of learning is rapidly growing especially with working adults. Both ways of schooling will allow a studentto earn a degree but there are some differences between the two. Learning the traditional way consists of sitting in a classroom for hours on end (Bethel University, n.d., p.4). A traditional classroom allows the student to correspond with the teacher and classmates in person. Learning in a traditional classroom setting also means the student will have a physical text book to transport around and possibly other materials like notebooks, pens, paper, etc. (Bethel University, (n.d.) The traditional classroom will likely involve class participation, homework, reading assignments, tests, and possibly a few quizzes. An online setting allows the student to participate in the course work with more agility. You don t have to slip into a seat at a particular time of the day or night. (Bethel University, n.d., p. 4). Once you reach a goal, such as collecting 100 percent of patient copayments at time of service, move on to other targets. 10. Consider non monetary awards. The problem with most financial incentive plans is that they become an expectation, which means they are no longer motivating better performance but merely maintaining the status quo.
