OSC Serials crisis
Publisher produces a journal & sells subscriptions
Subscriptions cancellations lead to higher prices
Higher prices = more libraries cancel = cost
increases
Eventually journals are not
financially viable for publishers
OSC The BIG Deal
Bundle of journals from one publisher sold to
libraries as a single subscription
Initial advantages for both libraries
and publishers
Costs have risen hugely causing a
backlash from libraries & researchers

Work needs to be
accessible to be

OSC Time for a change?
Research community contributes more than just

  • 28. OSC Serials crisis Publisher produces a journal & sells subscriptions Subscriptions cancellations lead to higher prices Higher prices = more libraries cancel = cost increases Eventually journals are not financially viable for publishers
  • 29. OSC The BIG Deal Bundle of journals from one publisher sold to libraries as a single subscription Initial advantages for both libraries and publishers Costs have risen hugely causing a backlash from libraries & researchers

Editor's Notes

  1. Everyone will get access to the slides
  2. What is SC?
  3. Post It Note exercise – what does scholarly communication mean to you? Write down everything you can think of – one idea per Post It. Gather all Post-Its, categorise and keyword. Possible discussion points: Is it a process or a service? What is the crossover with research support? Or are they the same thing?
  4. OSC definition: the process of academics, scholars and researchers sharing and publishing their research findings so that they are available to the wider academic community and beyond Display definition and highlight different sections
  5. OSC definition: the process of academics, scholars and researchers sharing and publishing their research findings so that they are available to the wider academic community and beyond Display definition and highlight different sections
  6. 21st century researcher What do we mean by the term researcher? – who are these people and why are we trying to help them? What qualifications will they need? VERY simplified version What do they typically do with their day? – link to blog post via Moodle Handout – research proposal checklist Likely to be very mobile – moving between institutions (especially in early part of their career) Career routes open = research, teaching and research, outside of academia (increasing option) Facing increased competition for research posts Bids for resources for a project to answer a research question, investigates answer to question, creates outputs to answer the question and shares with the wider academic community and beyond Researchers facing increased pressures to publish – publish or perish? – which can lead to less robust academic practices
  7. Stages of a research career – very simplistic! How will a typical research career progress? – Research Associate, Junior Research Fellowship, Senior Research Fellow, Principal Investigator Complicated and defined differently at different institutions. Varies by discipline People with research degrees don’t always follow this process – many branch off into alternative careers. Some just do research and others take a more active role in teaching
  8. Sharing your work properly takes time and effort – this is one example of a list of things to do once a paper has been published. Because there are so many platforms this ensures that you get the widest reach for your work
  9. Creating outputs and promoting them is just one part of a wider lifecycle Talk through cycle
  10. Research lifecycle exercise
  11. List the types of output that a researcher could produce. Are these popular or academic?
  12. List the types of output that a researcher could produce. Are these popular or academic? Outputs obviously vary across disciplines
  13. Reasons for increased focus = perfect storm of circumstance Changing nature of the academic library (and jobs in the academic library) Increased external pressures Increased pressure on researchers that we saw earlier Serials crisis Call for a change in the reward system – lots of this work is done for free REF
  14. Why is this important? Library is moving away from providing access to knowledge and towards helping people to create it More and more academic libraries are focusing on research support – MIT Library report New services or a new approach to services which puts the researcher at the heart of what we do
  15. External pressures – funder mandates, changing tech, OA
  16. Timeline
  17. Timeline
  18. Timeline
  19. Serials crisis Other considerations – people won’t publish due to low circulations, library budgets decrease
  20. Serials crisis Other considerations – people won’t publish due to low circulations, library budgets decrease
  21. Serials crisis Other considerations – people won’t publish due to low circulations, library budgets decrease
  22. Serials crisis Other considerations – people won’t publish due to low circulations, library budgets decrease
  23. Big Deals = result of the serials crisis
  24. REF HEFCE policy states that in order for work to be included for assessment in the REF peer reviewed versions of all publications need to be deposited in an institutional or subject repository. All research outputs post 1 April 2016
  25. With all of this going on there are calls for a change in the reward system – lots of pressures for researchers!
  26. Support services for scholarly communication at the OSC - spider diagram Contact cards
  27. Introduction to the Programme Need to post your answer to one discussion question and reply to someone else’s posting Quiz to test knowledge - optional
  28. No formal assessment Aim to complete discussions and quizzes by 5pm on the Friday of the week but everything needs to be completed by 5pm Friday 22nd September
  29. Outcomes of the programme for participants
  30. Lots of elements which make up scholarly communication but we are going to concentrate on those covered at Cambridge and what we consider to be the most important areas. Reflects the basic research lifecycle Will be a catch up week built in – Bank Holiday but also to give people a chance to catch up on the first two weeks
