What is propulsive Device?
 A Propulsion system is a machine that produces thrust to push an
object forward .
 All the phenomenon of propulsive devices are based on Newton’
second and third law.
 In these devices a change in momentum of mass of propellant
imparts its energy due to combustion and the reaction of
accelerating fluid mass results in a propulsive force or thrust.

What is ATHODYD?
 Athodyd is nothing but an AERO-THERMODYNAMIC DUCT.
 Athodyd is a straight duct type of engine without a compressor and
a turbine wheels.
 The entire compression is obtained by a ram, eliminating the need
of turbine.
 Athodyd’s are used for pilot less aircrafts and missiles.
 The Ramjet, Scramjet and Pulse jet are the examples for athodyd
engines.
Some Basic Terminologies
Supersonic Combusting RAM Jet
 Scramjet is an variant of Ramjet air breathing engine, in
which combustion takes place in supersonic air flow.
 The scramjet provides the most integrated engine vehicle
design for air craft and missile.
Before we look into SCARMJET it is necessary
to understand the working of RAMJET engine.
Since SCRAMJET is an advanced version of a RAMJET
RAMJET ENGINE
Ramjet works most efficiently at supersonic speeds around Mach3.
This type of engines can operate up to speed of Mach 7
APPLICATIONS: Extensively used in missile technology and space
research.
Now what is SCRAMJET?
 A scramjet is a variant of a ramjet air breathing jet engine in
which combustion takes place in supersonic airflow.
 By contrast, the air flow in a pure scramjet remains supersonic
throughout the combustion process and does not require a
choking mechanism, which provides optimal performance over a
wide operating range of Mach number.
 The propulsion system consists of five major engine and two
vehicle components, which is very much simple and light weight
compared to conventional jet engines.
 Modern scramjet can work as both a ramjet and a scramjet and
seamlessly make the transition between the both.
 Scramjet engine seems to be the future hope of modern fighter
jet and missile engine. There is a range of possible application for
scramjet, including missile propulsion, hypersonic cruiser
propulsion, and a part of a staged space access propulsion
system.
About SCRAMJET Engine Design
The propulsion system consists of five major engine and two vehicle components:
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Scramjet starts to operate when the speed of the craft reaches
Mach6.
The speed of the air in combustion chamber remains supersonic .
The operating range of scramjet is from Mach6 to Mach
10,12,14,?

Comparison of Propulsive Devices
APPLICATIONS
HYPERSONIC MISSILE ROCKET PROPULSION
MILITARY APPLICATION CIVIL AIRCRAFT
ADVANTAGES
NO OXIDIZER HIGH SPEED NO MOVING PARTS
ACCESS TO OUTER SPACE HYPERSONIC SPEED
DISADVANTAGES
EXPENSIVE INITIAL PROPULSION REQUIREMENT
TESTING DIFFICULTIES
CONCLUSION
The scramjet is the most effective solution to the problem of achieving
hypersonic speeds with aircraft using an air breathing engine. In
experimental flight tests and ground test scramjet has exceeded
expectations . Although there is more testing to be done before it is put
into production , these engines are the propulsion systems of the
future. They are capable of achieving speeds up to Mach 15.
Implementing scramjet technology in military and aerospace
applications will keep the Indian air force (IAF) and ISRO on the
cutting edge of aviation technology .
With continued research and understanding not only scramjet engines
change the way we reach outer space and fight our wars , they could
change the way we travel and interact with other forms around the
world.
