Because of the temporary nature of construction work, it is safe to assume that it would not disturb the
entire community. Economically, Riverdale seems to be an affluent community. The assets to the
neighborhood would be the private schools, colleges, banks and various religious centers. As for
liabilities, none was present on our tour of the neighborhood. There aren t much large chain stores like
K Mart or Old Navy in Riverdale and the only ones we saw were CVS and Eckerd. There aren t any
fast food chain restaurants like McDonalds, Burger King, White Castle, etc. The shopping area is
composed of ice cream parlors, art galleries, wine stores, pet shops, flower shops, Korean stores for
your Caribbean products, jewelry stores, pizza shops, pharmacies, gift shops, etc. We saw just 2
laundromats in the area. It can be assumed that residents here do their own laundry at their homes. We
also saw a few dry cleaners on the main road. For recreation, Riverdale residents don t have much of a
variety of activities. Nearby Riverdale is Van Courtlandt Park. Located here is a Riverdale Equestrian
Centre where people can go horseback riding. There are parks in the area such as Spuyten Duyvil
Playground and Riverdale Playground but in general, there are no recreational centers. Similar to

Jacob Portman s grandpa was probably the most interesting person in his life. Grandpa Portman would
always regale Jacob with stories about his life in an orphanage. However, that wasn t the most
interesting part. This orphanage was home to many peculiar children. Some of these children could lift
massive boulders, while others could fly, make instant fireballs, or were even invisible. Grandpa
Portman stated that with the help of all these peculiar children, they would defeat monsters. For a six
year old, these stories sounded pretty believable, especially because Grandpa Portman had photos.
However, as he grew older, Jacob stopped believing these far fetched tales. The photos were obviously
some kind of photoshop and according to Jacob s dad, the monsters were people that took all of his
family s lives. One day Grandpa Portman starts acting all weird. He thinks that the monsters are
coming for him again and all he has left to defend himself against the monsters is a box cutter. As
Jacob visits to check up on him, his grandpa was not lying. He was standing face to face with a
monster that killed Grandpa Portman. As the monster disappears, Grandpa Portman is left dying only
before muttering his last words. Nobody believes Jacob when he says that he saw a monster, of course.

Summary Of Faint Hints Of Tranquility
Reflecting on all the stories I have read in class so far, I would have to say that my two favorite pieces
of literature are, Faint Hints of Tranquility, by Adania Shibi and, The Uses of English, by Akinwumi
Isola. Faint Hints of Tranquility, is a mind challenging story with its many moments of symbolism
throughout. For instance, when the Israeli reporter goes to talk with a Palestinian woman in the
Balatah refugee camp, Shibi teaches the reader about how respect looks in her culture. While the
reporter talks with the woman, she accidently steps on the woman s headscarf and she feels beyond
embarrassed about her action; as a reader, you can tell she has a little panic attack at this moment.
Before reading this piece, I didn t know that in many Middle Eastern countries touching an object or a
person with human feet is one the worst insults. Another example of symbolism, would be when the
reporter changes her password to Arafat. Arafat is the name of a Palestinian leader who was a
