Monkey Beach Analysis
Throughout Monkey Beach, Identity is a constant and important theme. Lisa is
trying to define herself in a world which does not appreciate indigenous traditions.
Ma ma oo says that Gladys once had the same gift and that she could know who
was going to die next (Robinson 98), but Gladys gave it up as she grew older. In
the same way, Gladys is portrayed as fun loving and adventurous in her youth. We
are told of her having made enough snow angels while drunk that, the whole front
yard was covered with them (Robinson 65). However, Gladys is a flat character
who now believes the little man is merely a reoccurring dream. She has not just lost
the gift, she has lost part of her cultureand belief in the supernatural. Lisa s
resistance to the dismissal of her gift is how she differs from her mother, and is a
very important part of Lisa s character. Lisa s identitythroughout the book is
complex, but most importantly, she is underdeveloped as a person. It is important to

philosophy. The reader can choose to believe Jimmy is dead because he is seen as a

agree on either side, but no one can definitively say whether he has died.
The fate of jimmy is ambiguous because Lisa cannot communicate effectively with

My argument is that, though Lisa is not dead, her gift has certainly killed her sense
of identity. As a person, Lisa is unsociable and does not understand the issues behind
her questions. She communicates as effectively with the dead as she does the living,
she frequently misunderstands social queues and even when she does recognize her

film, Andy was acted out by Tim Robbins. There is a narrator in the movie (which,

As seen in Table 2, fuel consumption in kg/hr increases with an increase in the
percent load. However, the specific fuel consumption in g/kW hr follows a
different trend i.e. the minimum BSFC is obtained at 75% prime power. The
reason being that for constant speed diesel engines, the mechanical efficiency goes
down significantly at higher loads, which has a negative impact on the BSFC.
Furthermore, as expected, the highest fuel conversion efficiency is obtained at the
point where lowest BSFC is achieved (As sfc=1/ (QLHV*О·f). Lastly, the calculated
BSFC matches very closely with the value of 190 g/kW hr specified in Table 2.1 of
Heywood for 4 stroke locomotive engines. Please refer to the Appendix for the
Matlab calculation details.
Table 3 provides a summary of the mean piston speed, BMEP and specific power
for three different engines. Due to resistance to flow or inertial stresses of moving
parts, mean piston speed is limited within 8 15 m/s. Automobile engines usually
operate at the higher end of this range, whereas marine engines typically have
lower piston speeds (as evident below). In addition, as expected, the BMEP for the

I think transitioning over to ICD 10 CM will make coding easier by being more
specific with the descriptions. I think that the biggest challenge is going to be just
learning the different sections of the ICD 10 CM. Some other challenges may
include training in ICD 10 CM, the cost of the transition, and maintaining two
coding systems because some private insurance like workman compensation
insurance are not required to switch over to ICD 10 CM. I believe that we have
