Within this quote lies an underlying theme that connects all of the novels we have
read as a class this semester the concept of destiny. Destiny plays a different role in
each of the individual novels, however one question remains the same: is destiny a
matter of choice or rather one of chance? In other words, could any one of the
various protagonists we read about whether it be Edna, Jude, Huck, Frankenstein, the
creation, or even Jay Gatsby have made different choices in their life to ultimately
lead more successful lifestyles? The answer is yes. As William Jennings Bryan once
said, Destinyis no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be
waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. All of the protagonists in the novels could
have made different choices in order to create a better destiny for themselves, but...
Destiny can be identified as a prevalent theme in the story of Frankenstein, as
Victor relays his life as one with a predetermined wicked destiny, rejecting and
deserting his own creation, who in turn responds with rebellion and murder. As he
tells Walton of the events leading up to their encounter, he often mentions how key
events were predetermined and unavoidable. Frankenstein believed destiny had

A Reflection On My Values Speech
By reflecting upon my Values Speech, I will be more aware of what skills I have
already accomplished and what skills I need to improve on in order to prepare
myself better for the next big speech as well as to further improve my public
speaking skills. Now that I look back at the recording of my presentation, I clearly
saw strengths that were shown, but there were also weaknesses that I revealed,
diminishing the overall powerful effect that my speechshould have gave. As I
watched Amy Cuddy s TED talk called Your body languageshapes who you are , I
learned more about body language and what I should ve done when I presented my
Values Speech. Throughout my reflection, I will discuss my strengths that I portrayed
during my speech such as pacing and eye contact as well as the limitations, for
instance, stuttering and abruptly finishing my sentences, and then I will finish off my
reflection with the levels of confidence and body language I portrayed.
First off, there were many strengths that I believed were demonstrated within my
Values Speech such as pacing and eye contact with my fellow classmates, but
despite the strengths that were seen, the weaknesses of stuttering and finishing
sentences abruptly created a weak feeling at the end of my presentation. As I
watched the recording of my presentation on repeat, I noticed that my pacing was
very well executed. I didn t speak too fast nor did I speak too slow, which is good
because my classmates were able to follow along with what I was saying. Not only
that, but I also provided eye contact to my classmates, showing that I was well
prepared and did not need to read my note cards as much. Of course, with strengths,
there were also weaknesses portrayed. I often stuttered at a couple of phrases
because of my anxiety and I would also finish some of my sentences abruptly,
leaving a poor execution. I realized that once I began saying a certain sentence and
mess up mid way through, I would end the sentence with words that wouldn t be as
clear. Now knowing my weaknesses and strengths, I will better prepare myself for
my next upcoming speech by practicing my speeches with more word choices when I
say it verbally, allowing myself to become more aware of the variety of

Bullying is a growing problem in American schools; an increase in bullying over a
period of time can lead to suicide or negative impacts on health. Although some
believe that students should not be formally charged for bullying, they should be
because that is a cruel act and could lead to negative things. Opponents suggest that
students should not be formally charged with bullying. They argue that students do
not have the capacity to understand the consequences of their actions. For example, if
a student bullies another student, they have no way of knowing that their actions
could lead to that student harming themselves. Opponents of bullying believes that
