Movie, Troy, By Wolfgang Petersen
Film adaptations often do a less than adequate job of representing the book off of which they are
based. Occasionally, a director with the correct vision and drive will produce a movie that leaves
the audience screaming for more. One must take a step back and decide whether it is more
important for a movie to be entertaining, or follow the plot of the book from which its story is
taken. In the 2004 film Troy, by Wolfgang Petersen, the story, although interesting, fails to correctly
follow the plot of Homer s The Iliadin multiple instances. From the overall timeline of the story
to the main focus and character development, much creative license was taken in the production.
While the movie is certainly fantastic, many differences exist between its main focus and that
of The Iliad. The Iliad opens with the Achaeans approaching the Trojan shore. Speaking to
Agamemnon from across the water is a priest of Apollo. He is asking the lord of men to return
his daughter Chryseis. When Agamemnon refuses, the priest prays to Apollo and asks him to
exchange his tears for arrows. Agamemnon s disrespect for the priest results in massacre for the
Achaean s at the hands of Apollo. He takes his bow and rains plague down on their troops, killing
them in droves, Over against the ships he dropped to a knee, let fly a shaft and a terrifying clash
rang out from the great silver bow [...] launching a piercing shaft at the men themselves (Book 1.

Industrial Development And Population Growth
Industrial development and population growth have created a surge in global demand for energy.
The tension in the Middle East and the sharp rise in oil prices since the 1990 s had Western
countries like the US scrambling to secure alternative energy sources. While solar and wind energy
is flourishing, energy industries have pursued more aggressive means of tapping the earth s
resources. Continued mining, drilling, and especially hydraulic fracturing have been a game
changer for the US. Although industrialized energy developmentis making great strides in
harnessing the earth s energy resources, it is also threatening the natural environment and the
quality of life in many communities.
Fracking refers to hydraulic or hydro fracturing of rock formations to stimulate and extract natural
gas and oil. The process involves drilling down through sedimentary rocks for thousands of feet,
then sideways for miles, pumping millions of gallons of water, sand, and chemicals at high
pressure to open fractures in the rocks, allowing gas and oil to flow. This relatively new
technology is also being used for resource exploration by geothermal developers. Prior to
fracking, it was too expensive to exploit shale gas , but it is now being viewed as a way for the
United States (US) to become independent from foreign oil. Fracking also brings a host of new
public health and environmental concerns; drilling chemicals and fracking fluids are highly toxic
and include known carcinogens.

Edgar Vilhelm Analysis
Edgar Vilhelm. Aspiring author, playwriter, sound mixer, multi instrumentalist, and multi media
artist. As a self described jack of all trades, master of none , Edgar surely doesn t carry the
attitude of master of none at all. Upon first meeting him he seems like a very humble guy, but after
being his friend for some time he reeks of self importance. It s actually very comedic.
Me: First, give me a quick description of who you are.
One of the best minds of our generation. Oft referred to as Edgar the Victorian, I am a 20 year old
white, cis het male atheist, a painter, multi instrumentalist, writer, and soon to be filmmaker. Snarky
as fuck, especially towards alternative facts.

I think the first story I wrote was a Godzilla knock off, which I called Space Monster. I even
made a sequel for it a little while later lol. Next big writing project I remember was in 4th grade,
for science class. Our teacher told us to write a story about the changes between states of matter,
and molecules moving. The first one ended up being a parody of Star Wars, in which my friends
and I turned into Star Wars characters and went to space to battle aliens who destroyed the sun.
When I was in elementary school, I and some friends of mine took the Space Monster concept
and decided to go in sort of an Ultraman direction with it, by trying to make it into a show and
having it be sort of a monster of the week thing, in which every episode, Space Monster would
have to battle new monsters. I tell you, I was drawing kaiju left and right for that. The stories
were really fucking involved as well. Next, around 5th 6th grade, I began getting into anime.
Hence, I started coming up with anime characters, and demons for them to fight, and such. More
recently, I ve shifted the focus onto poetry, and found my style becoming more aligned with the
gritty realists, like Bukowski, Carver, Ginsberg, and Heston. Poetry isn t any more than a hobby
for me self therapy, to put it better. I view it as language unhinged. I use whatever visuals or words
I need to convey exactly how I

Keats Concept Of Ambiguity In Ode To A Nightingale
Negative Capability Keats By MarГa Andrea Moar Ares Essay question: Can an imaginative
engagement with poetry promote one s ability to tolerate ambivalence and uncertainty? In your
response, draw upon Keats s concept of Negative Capability through an analysis of any poem or
poems studied on this module. This essay deals mainly with Keats concept of Negative Capability,
which belongs to the realm of Romantic poetry, and with the question of how Negative Capability,
as one operation of the imagination, can help us to tolerate uncertainty and ambiguity. Hence,
imagination, nature, and self awareness are key points we have to go through before everything
else, since they are fundamental in the Romantic period and are important to understand... Show

The poetic voice feels no envy of the nightingale but admits his pain when observes the excess of
joy that infuses the bird s singing. Here we see the paradoxical relationship between pleasure
and pain. The poet wants to escape from human anguish, gray, sadness: That I might drink, and
leave the world unseen,/ And with thee fade away into the forest dim: (ll. 19 20) by meeting the
bird, by making possible a union with it through death ( hemlock and Lethe suggest decline,
death rather than rapture: hemlock is a poison when taken in larger quantities, and Lethe is a
river of the underworld). Because he did not succeed in that union as we see in the very
response of the poet to the song of the nightingale, which is based on images of decline, the
poetic voice is going to try to compensate or neutralize the death related draughts of the opening
lines by replacing them with draughts of a different kind: hard drinks. It seems the poetic voice
wanted to escape the world he was living in by getting drunk with vintage ; the image of a kind
of burial, of the deep delved earth, is still there but here it is turned into a positive image that
evokes a kind of pastoral atmosphere. He suggest, also, that wine is the true, the blushful
Hippocrene which may lead us to think his aim is not getting drunk, but getting poetic inspiration
(Hippocrene is the name of a fountain on Mount Helicon sacred to the Muses but it also allusively
means poetic inspiration). He aims to get pleasure by leaving this world with the wings of Poetry to
find the Beauty, here represented by the song of the nightingale which, like the Nightingale, is
immortal: Fade far

Why Death Is Accepted As A Natural Part Of The Process Essay
Similarly, a study taken from the International Journal of Older People Nursing shows that that in
one third of the cases, nursing staff members who were caring for residents who died with dementia
reported that they experienced what they perceived as a high emotional burden (Albers, Block,
Stichele 2013). Healthcare workers in another study reported feelings of guilt and moral dilemma
regarding patient deaths (Dwyer, Hansebo, Andershed, and Ternestedt 2009). In this same study it
is important to note that the participants acknowledged that deathis accepted as a natural part of the
process, however it was the circumstances under which the residents died and the employees
employee s feelings of personal responsibility for meeting individualized needs of the residents that
upset the employees the most. Most caretakers enter enters the profession due to a desire help
others, and it is inevitable that they form bonds with the residents they care for. This feeling of
responsibility coupled with the sheer frequency of experiencing the death of residents they care for
can in turn generate depressive symptoms.
What Is Not Currently Known About Depression and Healthcare Workers
Though studies have been done regarding the prevalence of depression among nursing home and
palliative care residents, little has been formed on the healthcare workers that come in contact with

Liturgical Dance In Modern Times

RESEARCH PAPER
Liturgical Dance (Ancient Times to the Modern Times)
In the world that we live in today there are many things that has been passed down from year to
year. In the years such as 1400 and 1440 B.C. dancing in which we refer to now as liturgical
dancing was first introduced. Liturgical dance has as its purpose the deepening and focusing of the
worship experience; it is not merely ornamental or decorative. (Branigan). Liturgical dance is a
very uplifting form of art; starting from the biblical times and even up until now. The history of
liturgical dance begins in the Bible. The Bible doesn t mention much about dance. But, it does
mention dances of celebration during two important historical events. The first event was the
crossing of the Red Sea. Miriam, prophetess and sister of Moses brought together several women
in song and in praise after the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20, 21). The
second event occurs when David brings back the arc of the covenant to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6).
Both major events showed the significance of praise dancing in rejoicing and thankfulness for what
the Lord have done, even for your triumphs. (DavenPort). Although the times has changed, the style
of liturgical dancing has changed in some ways, but has also remained the same in other ways.
There are many different attributes that allows this form of art to be so uplifting. The types of
attributes that causes this type of dance

Cause And Effect Of Pollution
The earth is 4.543 billion years old. Our ancestors have been estimated to date back to six million
years, with modern human life dating to 200,000 years ago (Reed). The effects of humanity on
earth can be exhibited by the increase of pollution within our world. As our population begins to
grow, so does our carbon footprint upon the earth. On a more localized scale, the Central Valley is a
mecca to poor air quality and elevating pollution levels. An assortment of environmental factors
increases pollution levels. The central Valley is a mecca for the climate, natural, industrial, mobile
and agricultural components that equate to this growing problem.
Pollution, otherwise known as PM, or particulate matter, is essentially any substance that is not
made up of water. PM is most commonly made of dust, ash, smoke, fumes, vapors and mists,
emitted from a source and absorbed into the ozone. Particulate matter that is emitted directly
from a source, is called primary PM. Particulate matter that is formed in the atmosphere by gas is
called secondary PM. There are two certified health based standards classifying particulate
matter: PM10, for particles smaller than 10 microns, and PM2.5, for particles smaller than 2.5.
PM10 is made up of course dust particles. Common PM10 sources include: crushing or grinding
operations, as well as soil stirred up in our valley s vast fields, or dirt roads. PM2.5 is composed of
finer particles. Elements most commonly produced by combustion, motor

Islam And Western Imperialism In Islam
Although the Islamic world has faced many challenges throughout history, Islam s encounter with
Western imperialism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has had the greatest impact on
contemporary Islam. These encounters with Western powers influenced and shaped the Muslim
world by introducing Islamto modernity. The Islamic world s varied reaction to these challenges of
modernity affects a wide range of issues in Islam today. To understand how the Muslim world
reacted to Western influence, we must understand what they were reacting to. With the fall of the
Ottoman Empire, European political ideas permeated the Middle East. Muslims were forced to
respond to ideas of nationhood, nationalism, democracy, and sovereignty.... Show more content on

Modernists claimed these institutions were not foreign to Islam and could coexist within an Islamic
state. Rashid al Rida argued Islam was democratic and representative because Islamic leadership is
determined through consensus of the community. According to Rida, an Islamic state requires
Islamic legal systems, where the uluma are representatives of the people. Other Islamic modernists
such as Muhammad Abduh and Muhammad Iqbal also attempted to balance Western ideologies
with the Islamic faith. According to Abduh, reason and science were complementary to Islam.
Iqbal also believed some Western ideas were compatible with Islam. Iqbal applied reasoning to
help understand Islamic female inheritance laws. One interpretation of these laws is that a
woman is worth half a man. Iqbal argued the share of female inheritance is not based on a
woman s value, but rather on social context specific to a certain period. He claimed these laws
applied to a time when women had less financial responsibility than men. This type of logic and
reasoning still exists in contemporary Pakistani law. Both Abduh and Iqbal believed certain aspects
of Western influence could be applied to Islamic society, as long as those ideas did not contradict
Islam. Other movements within Islam have directly challenged the Islamic modernists ideas on
Western influence. Unlike Islamic

Omelas Moral Dilemma
Omelas Moral Dilemma In The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas Ursula LeGuin is raising
the moral dilemma of justice vs. happiness. The happiness of the citizens in Omelas depends on
the suffering of a child locked in a closet. She briefly describes the contrast between the child s
situation and the citizens position, portraying a moral dilemma, which is when you have to
choose to do one of two equally unpleasant things. LeGuin portrays an ideal life boats in the
harbor sparkled with flags, women carrying their babies and chatting as they walked and streets
filled with music and dancing (1311). The morning air was clear, the peaks wear crowning with

Men and women walk the streets, and weep at the fact of the child in the cellar. The child in the
cellar is the existence of why the Omelas treat their children gentle but yet full of compassion
and joyful love for happiness. The tearless rage, treatment, freedom, and acceptance of the
Omelas to the child have long ever to be free and fearful. Therefore, happiness seems to be at the
expense of justice. The folks were not simple folk, though they were happy (1312). They would
not use the word cheer anymore because they weren t cheerful (1312), but yet all smiles would
become archaic (1312). They didn t have slaves or swords nor did they use their people as
barbarians (1312). Yet their society, rules, and laws were especially less complex, but the people
of Omelas were not less complex than us (1312). The trouble was encouraged by sophisticates
considering happiness rather than being stupid (1312). Their children were happy, mature and
intelligent; perhaps happiness is based on what is neither necessary nor destructive. Omelas
strikes some as all smiles and good people. The people of the Omelas have guilt, and the joy they
have is built on successful slaughter. What swells the hearts of Omelas is the boundless, generous
and magnanimous triumph in souls of all men and against some other enemy. The people of
Omelas often stray away from the village

When China Ruled the Seas by Levathes
In the book, When China Ruled the Seas, Levathes tells us about seven voyages made by junk
armadas during the Chinese emperor Zhu Di s reign. Treasure ships as they were called, were
under the command of admiral Zheng He, these ships traded silk, porcelain, and many other fine
objects of value. They sailed from India to East Africa, throughout Korea and Japan, and possibly
as far as Australia. She believes that China might have been able to create a great colonial realm

Feuds between Siam and Malacca were also alleviated because of Chinese involvement.
The voyages of the treasure fleet were not to inhabit foreign lands, but to open up foreign dealings
and international relations. Zheng He managed this and even established trading posts in many of
the places he stopped at. These trading posts were also used as warehouses to store goods until
they could be sold. He also built a chain of dispatch stations the merchants could stop and rest at.
The dispatch stations were spaced out so that overnight stays would be easier for travelers and
traders. All of this also helped China?s economy by making trades easier for merchants. Chinese
authority also spread around the world because many Chinese traders moved out of the country to
work in the warehouses.
Many consequences were brought about as a result of these voyages, some were good and some
were bad. The most apparent good consequence is that trade with the world was opened up to
China. China was also at the summit of its global power, and practically every country paid China
homage. However because of China?s newfound trading routes, the people became too self
sufficient on overseas goods and this brought about piracy and corrupt trade. Some important
government officials would even desert their official decrees to

How Has Social Class Made In My Life
The difference that social class has made in my life is that it leaves no aspect of life untouched.
If I had to rank my families social class, I would consider us as the lower middle class. My husband

The Vertebrate Kidney
1.1 Introduction
The vertebrate kidney is an important organ that serves vital roles in waste excretion,
osmoregulation, metabolites reabsorption, maintenance of acid base balance and even hormone
secretion. Nephron is the basic functional unit of a kidney which consists of a blood filter (the
glomerulus) and renal tubules that joins to a collecting duct. Nephron filters blood plasma and the
filtrate is further modified and refined in the tubules via selective solute reabsorption and secretion.
The consequential unwanted waste is drained into collecting ducts and excreted (Reilly 2000;
Jacobsen, 1981).
Through the course of mammalian development, a series of three kidney structures arises
sequentially from the intermediate mesoderm (IM). These include the pronephros, the mesonephros
and the metanephros. The pronephros is the first embryonic kidney. Degeneration of the pronephros
is accompanied by the formation of a second kidney, the mesonephros. The mesonephros functions
transiently until the development of the metanephros, after which it will rapidly degenerate leaving
the metanephros to serve as the adult kidney in higher vertebrates including birds, reptiles, and
mammals. Lower vertebrates like fish never form a metanephros and instead utilize the
mesonephros during adult life. Despite this difference, each kidney form is comprised of nephrons
that exhibit a similar composition (Wingert Davidson, 2008; Dressler, 2006).
Extensive study in mammalian model has

Heartbreaker vrs. Sweetheart Essay
Heartbreaker vrs. Sweetheart From my dating experiences in the past, I have come to realize that

other is the sweetheart. This observation, that I have made, is not based on appearance, and it is
mostly based on my own opinion.

thought it was the best thing that could happen... until I got to know him. This guy was very

they are, and acting conceited. This in turn forces them to put others down to boost themselves up.
This heartbreaker guy is not respectful of the girls he dates. Some of these guys think of girls as
being just another name on their list of sexual accomplishments. I always try to avoid this kind of
guy, but sometimes it s hard to spot them out because they are very manipulative and deceitful.
Not all guys fall into that category, though. I have a loving boyfriend who is never selfish,
hateful, or uncaring. He is very trustworthy and I can count on him as my best friend as well as
my partner in our relationship. He is the kind of guy I call the sweetheart. This caring individual
is honest, passive, gentle, and most always trustworthy. You don t have to worry about this guy
cheating on you, because he is a one girl type of guy. The sweetheart doesn t rush into a
relationship or into physical closeness. This guy is a good listener and cares about his dating
partner s life. You will find the parents of girls who date this guy tend to always approve of him
and even like him because he is respectful and has good morals as well as good intentions. All

Voltaire And Conflict Essay
In answering the question, How could the ideas of the enlightenment lead to conflict? I wanted to
show that Voltaire believed that the enlightenment was the time where religious superstitions and
ignorance was to be replaced with rational thinking, and tolerance. Voltaire was well known for
believing religious tolerance and that is his legacy but also his main source of conflict with the
Catholic church. My best piece of evidence that highlights his conflicts with the church is that, he
developed a writing called, Lettres philosophiques, which focused quite a bit on intolerance and
superstition which was publicly burned and banned, because it was considered a strike against the
Catholic Church, (Voltaire, Stanford). I chose to use this piece... Show more content on

Another reason why this evidence is relevant to the claim I made is, because it shows how
Voltaire really did have conflict with the catholic church, because where he disproved of their
ideas and voiced it, the church also disapproved of his ideas and made that just as clear by
burning his writing. I received this piece of evidence from the Stanford encyclopedia of philosophy,
which I found was a credible source, because it is in fact an educational website, that was
incredibly well written, and went into great detail about all the different aspects of Voltaire s life.
The source was valuable, because it s purpose was educational, and written for students, it was
rich and detailed in content, it was overall very factual and useful. Although a limitation to this
source is that it is a secondary source so I do have to question its liability, because the writers
where not there when Voltaire s writings where publicly burned, but although this is a secondary
source it s facts are consistent with the other sources I used, so that does make it more

Persuasive Essay On Hairstyles
At the moment I ask myself, why are these schools dictating these kids hairstyles? Why can t a
boy dye his hair pink or have his hair over his collar, there is no real reason for this. You should
not be able to dictate these different hairstyles for the exact reason that we have our amendments

their hair long and you call that a violation, there is nothing wrong with a boy having his hair long.

Elf Buddy from the movie Elf is an archetypal hero because his story follows the hero s journey.

he fell on the ground and started to crawl towards Santa Clause gift sack. Buddy starts his journey
once he got into Santa s gift sack. Santa did not realize that a toddler snuck into his gift sack. Santa

Bush And Clinton Comparison
While this was largely due to the similarity on their views regarding Russia and China, the two
also bonded over topics as disparate as NAFTA and the line item veto to an assassination attempt

Their relationship had an unchallenging beginning due in large part to the similarity in their
upbringings and political affiliations. Despite temporary fallouts, the two collaborate on major
foreign policy conflicts in North Korea and Haiti. Both ventures were risky and unstable, yet
ultimately successful all due to Carter. During another risky time, the Monica Lewinsky scandal,

Bush was revived when he found his place in politics. Unlike his more methodical father, W.
Bush was instinctive; moreover, he appealed to the very Evangelical voters which his father had

eight, when my dad took me to the barn in our neighborhood. I had initially just went to pet the

The Best Kind Of Judge
Socrates once stated there were four qualities that belong to a judge and those were to hear
courteously, answer wisely, consider soberly, and to decide impartially. The highest legal court, the
Supreme Court has nine justices sworn to always provide the people who come before them with
good governance and equal justiceunder law. The best kind of judgeis a qualified and qualitative
judge who renders to its community to sharpen a nation despite the complexity of the court s
procedures. A judge who reaches their policy conclusions based on the support given by the
administration can sometimes be the kind of a judge who may or may not be functioning
properly as the guardian and interpreter of the Constitution. In a selection of a nominee, six
elements that are vital to consider and are all top priorities are their political ideology, policy
position, method of constitutional interpretation, judicial temperament, the existence of a clear
paper trail, and lastly the diversity. All six elements contribute in selecting a judge that will help
others have a better understanding of all major aspects and decision making of the Court. A
judge is entitled just as a citizen to have their own version of ideals, principles, and social
movements that explain how they see society would function best in accordance to the law. A
judge can also offer a political blueprint for how the law and its policies could be carried out by
society. The difference between what makes a good judge as

Effects Of Advertising Cause Low Self-Esteem
Advertising is an over 100 billion dollar a year industry and affects all of us throughout our lives.
We are each exposed to over 2,000 ads a day, constituting perhaps the most powerful educational
force in society. The average American will spend one and one half years of his or her life
watching television commercials. The ads sell a great deal more than products. They sell images,
makeup, skin and hair care, diet pills, and cosmetic surgery as a means of normalcy.
In this paper, I will argue how the effects of advertisements on a person s identity can cause low
self esteem and lead to health issues. First, I will explain what a person s identity means. A person
s identity is who you are, the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world
and the characteristics that define you.
Media portrayals of women through advertising and characters who are then, airbrushed and
perfect, contribute to norms that reinforce this unattainable image of beauty. According to Maggie
Vlazny, a mental health professional, Self esteem is a core identity issue, essential to personal
validation and our ability to experience joy. Once achieved, it comes from the inside out. But it is
assaulted or stunted from the outside in. A woman with low self esteem does not feel good about
herself because she has absorbed negative messages about women from the culture and/or
relationships.
Based on the images seen in advertising, women often feel they should be thin and

their lives. A major contributor to a person s perspective of themselves is their personal
appearance, so when they look fit they see themselves more positively. CrossFit burns fat, builds
muscle, and improves endurance, which in effect enhances people s physique. This
transformation is just the beginning and sets off a chain reaction. Like any hobby, when one is
able to finally see progress in their ability it motivates them to try even harder and apply
themselves even more. This is most true with CrossFit. As one looks in the mirror and sees results
of their hard work, they become driven to stay committed and give even more effort. This new
sense of motivation then leaks over into every other aspect of life and makes people more
confident in everything they do, which leads to success. When others see the transformation of

Marriage is the union of two people, traditionally husband and wife. Traditional also are the roles
that women play when confined in a marriage. When a woman has had the opportunity to educate
herself pass tradition and has been use to a fast paced modern lifestyle, this role of the wife might
prove to be quite onerous to mold to. Usually a time of joy, celebration, and adulation, marriage

Being strong and independent women no longer matters as the men that they will call their
husbands enter their lives. Lesego and Kegoletile both represent the male figures and the change
that Life and Neo must endure as they conquer marriage. Lesego represents the authoritative male
that is respected by all the people of the rural village for his wealth and judgment. Life is attracted to
his power and control, but clearly underestimates them. It is with this man that Life decides to

His purpose is to marry Life and turn her into a proper village wife, one who does not throw loud

Life, because of her nature is willing to try new things, welcomes the challenges that marriage

Internet Security Metrics
Security Metrics
As the Internet becomes ubiquitous due to wireless technologies including 3G and pervasive Wi
Fi Hotspots, there is the need to continually improve security technologies. One of the most
effective approaches to doing this is to define a series of metrics for measuring security levels
attained (Idika, Bhargava, 2012). The following is a listing of security metrics and their definitions:
In the area of Incident Management the following metrics apply:
Mean Cost per Incident This the average cost per security incident from a dollars and time
perspective. The cost per incident is often measured in terms of opportunity cost of how the time
could have been invested in other tasks instead of solving the security incident (Shari, 2009).
Mean Time Between Security Incidents This is the aggregated measurement of how much time
elapses between security incidents over a given time period. The mean time between security
incidents is often measured in monthly increments and charted to compare the impact of security
strategies over time (Wang, Guo, Wang, Zhou, 2012).
Number of Incidents a very fundamental measure of security that all security platforms, even
those available for free via vendors websites, report. This is the baseline of many security
programs and measurement platforms today. This figure is often tracked over years to determine
how well investment sin security pay off over time as well.

Social Problems
According to Ferreira (2005:86), four elements may be discerned when attempting to define a

Taking these four elements as building blocks the following definition of a social problem may be
arrived at: A social condition, known to a pressure group as posing a threat to current values and
norms, that requires collective action to rectify (Pretorius, Le Roux, Lesufi, Liebenberg, Martin

Today, Africas rate of urbanization is second to none (Tibaijuka in de Beer, du Plessis,
Liebenberg Moloi 2005:116). At the eve of independence, during the 60 s for a handful of African
countries, urbanization, in most cases, was well sought after (social condition). Western powers had
developed following paths of industrialization and urbanization and the same was thought possible
in Africa (pressure groups). The basic tenants of this assumption went as follows: Capital
distributed from the West to Africa was to be invested in industrial enterprises in centers that
wielded political power. This newly found industry would promote manufacturing and encourage
domestic savings. Jobs would be created and the capital accumulated reinvested in development
projects (de Beer et al 2005: 115 125). And thus, by following this path Africa would become self
sufficient (values and norms).
However, five decades later Africa has failed to develop as rapidly or to the extent to which the
West has. Urban poverty escalates daily. A handful of problems face the African city: insufficient
provision of jobs, poorly delivered public services, a weakening revenue base, and escalating
pollution levels. According to de Beer et al. (2005:116 117), it is projected that by 2030 half of
Africa s population will have become urbanized, most of whom will live in poverty (social
problem).
There are some solutions on offer. Urban agriculture, albeit somewhat controversial, has

Saint Teresa was a mystic nun who had an experience in which an angel came down and pierced
her with the flaming arrow of divine love. She experienced a great pain but brought her great

in the painting Judith Beheading Holofernes that clearly depicts the actions taking place in a mid

What Are Xerxes Attitudes Towards The Spartans

Today when people talk about the Spartans they think about the movie 300 that was created that

actual real accounts that happened during the time of this particular Persian invasion. When
Herodotus wrote the Histories he mentions this battle in great detail. His thirst for knowledge

When Xerxes sent his men through the hidden path around the mountain Leonidas still stood his
ground with his Spartans even though he allowed most of the troops to return home. This shows in
Spartan culture a man would rather die in battle than run and be dishonored. Leonidas was
superstitious about the oracle that determined a king shall fall from Sparta or Sparta itself will be
destroyed. The people of Sparta must have had much intelligence to understand how to create this
choke point of the other army. Many of the different battles even after Thermopylae show that the
Spartans were versatile toward warfare.
Honor is shown throughout this narrative. Demaratus warns Xerxes about facing the Greeks in
battle and talks about the men being free. No matter what number of enemies they face to either

their society. When Xerxes sends heralds to each town for earth and water the perception of this

Mr Bean Character Analysis
In the excerpt of the television show, Merry Christmas Mr Bean , directed by John Brinkin with the
actors Rowan Atteinson, who plays Mr Bean and Matilda Zieglar, who plays Irma Gobb. The
episode features and consists of inter linked sketches, based upon an excerpt when Mr Bean is
preparing a Christmas lunch. In this assessment task this comic excerpt is to be analysed, and
individually in essay format, analyse its use of the elements of drama, stage craft and comic style to
determine the creation of comic meaning. The elements used within the excerpt are all contributed
to create and draw a larger focus to the comedic impact trying to be pursued; this is done
successfully due to the use of human context (roles and relationships), tension (tension of the task,
relationship, mystery, and surprise) and movement (e.g. physical actions, gestures and facial
expressions). Human context is displayed within the excerpt when displaying dimensions of the

Summary Of The NARCP And NAACP
2. Compare and contrast the activities, strategies, and tactics the SCLC, the NAACP, and SNCC
were involved in during the civil rights movement. In what ways did these organizations differ in
their programs, philosophies, goals and tactics? In what ways were they similar? Cite specific
examples of events/times when these organizations complimented each other (explain how), as well
as when they conflicted (against, specific examples and explain how).
As the oldest of the three organizations, the NAACP was founded in 1909 and in its early years
petitioned for anti lynching laws and Civil Rights legislation. Comprised of blacks as well as
whites the NAACP held a firm belief in the constitution and sought to bring about change by
using the legal system to garner African Americans the equality they deserved. The NAACP
established its own legal fund and went on to win Brown vs Board under the leadership of
Thurgood Marshall. They also worked on the local level supporting things such as the
Montgomery Bus boycott as well as providing lawyers and paying legal costs.
SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) was formed at Shaw University in Raleigh,
North Carolina in 1960. Formulated by young activists, whose primary focus intended for the
movement to rely on local organization and leadership rather than adopting the leadership model
that was employed by the NAACP and the SCLC. In its inception, they were committed to non
violent direct action beloved community .

Should Student Athletes Get Paid Essay
The crackle of pads and the sounds of whistles. Flags flying everywhere and bodies crashing each
other. Football players these days put their bodies and their lives on the line when they go out on
the field everyday. This being said, is it time for college athletes to get paid to play. As a result of
sports, universities are receiving hundreds of millions of dollars of profit and coaches and staff are
getting paid millions, yet the athletes that bring the university and coaches the wins and the success
are getting no additional funds. I believe that it is time that student athletes get paid for their
contributions to the success that they bring to their universities. One reason why student athletes
should get paid is because of the unfair financial gains that universities are making at the expense
of the athletes. College sports now is a billion dollar industry, with universities making hundreds of
millions of dollars every year from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Is it right for college coaches to be making millions of dollars and the athletes that help bring
success to these coaches make nothing but receive an academic scholarship? Is it right for
universities to keep the NCAA and amateur enterprise in order to exploit athletes and the
economic system to avoid taxes and maximize profits? The answer to these questions is a
precarious no. Some may say, Why mess with a system that has been working for ages and give
money to athletes that already are receiving a free education? And although this may be true,
maybe it is time to help the athletes that help make this business a very profitable enterprise by
sharing the billions of dollars that college sports brings into universities and the NCAA to those that

Spunk Zora Neale Hurston
Spunk Zora Neale Hurston s short story Spunk was a short story that immediately held my interest
from beginning to end. Hurston provided a gateway to life in her hometown that people could relate
to all over the country and has been able to not disconnect from an audience through the test of
time. I thought that it was interesting that Hurston decided to write a story using the dialect of a
small southern town rather than than proper english grammar and pronunciation. Hurston s
decision to use dialect to enhance her story and for me it brought the story to life. I could picture
the characters talking as it switched from the narrator to each individual , which gave more
personality to the person talking. Zora Neale HurstonWrote Spunk in a very similar setting as the
one that she grew up in, Southern dialect is different and has a certain charm to it that could not

Hurston is believed to be born in Eatonville Florida, where her two parents who were former
slaves raised her. I could tell how this might have shaped a story like Spunk because many black
people like Joe in the story felt like small and had no chance against such colossal opponents such
as Spunk himself or the white power that was still very strong at the time the story was written.
Zora Hurston also showed the depth of a community that might have been similar to the one she
grew up in. This not only made the story interesting because you were a spectator alongside other
townspeople in the story, but you could see how a black community was also very similar to many
communities back then and even

The Play Oppenheimer Follows The Story Of J Robert...
The play Oppenheimer follows the story of J Robert Oppenheimer and his colleagues on their
journey to discover and invent the atomic bomb. As the book is about the creation of this atomic
weapon, the entirety of it relates to morals in some shape or form. Throughout the reading of the
play I kept thinking about the moral implications of the work they were doing and what might
each individual character be thinking of it. There were two parts of the play that made me really
come up with this question in particular. The first was in chapter 22 Hiroshima, when it was
talking about the bombing of Hiroshima. That whole page was very eye opening to think how so
many people died, even though it helped many more in the end, for those people... Show more

I can agree with the idea that basing actions on morals can help to ensure that people are not
being irrational in their thought processes and that people s needs are more likely put ahead of
individual wants. If morals were not involved, then decisions would most likely be made
depending on what would advance the position of that person the most or on other selfish wants.
At the same time, without morals being looked at, many lives could be lost because there is no
clear way to judge things and come up with an agreement. Without morals, it can be extremely
tough to figure out right from wrong and how a group or individual should act. Conversely, by
looking at it from the perspective that morals should not be the basis of decision making, you can
see that if we don t use them, then many people can get hurt as a result. If people make choices
without thinking of the consequences or about what is important to them and the people around
them, the wrong choice may be made. While morals shouldn t be the only thing considered, they
must be taken into account to ensure the right things are being done. If we only base our actions
on morals, then some very important past discoveries may not have been made. If people only
consider morals than not only will decisions be biased as each person has different morals, but
many things in history may not have been accomplished. For example, the nuclear bomb may not
have been invented or people might

The Legend Of Turnus By Aeneas Summary
Deadly Resurrection
As Aeneas stood over the corpse of Turnus, his conscience was split in two. Half of his mind
rejoiced with the death of such a malicious man who had caused so much strife. The other half
lurched at the sight of bloodshed. Aeneas sighed with confusion as he slowly walked away from
the scene. Unlike most of his countrymen, he would never become comfortable with taking life,
even if it were for a just cause. While engaged in such controversial thoughts, his guard relaxed and
his gaze flitted about inattentively. With his mind elsewhere, Aeneasfailed to notice the wind
picking up speed at an alarming pace. Sand was flying about all around him, compromising his
vision. Suddenly, through the howling of the wind, Aeneas heard the words I will be back .
Instantaneously, the storm abated. Aeneas whirled around; apprehensive about the sight he was
about to face... the body of Turnus was gone. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He devised a plan. He gathered his men. They hastily constructed a fort. Aeneas and his men
remained there a fortnight. At the end of the two weeks, his captains began doubting whether
Turnus really had mysteriously disappeared. After all, the surviving adversaries had buried their
dead, so their leader could well have been accounted for among those. Of course, Aeneas refused to
entertain their doubts. This infuriated the captains. While Aeneas was bathing one night, they
gathered the men together and informed them of their suspicions. Only two of his followers
remained loyal to Aeneas, the rest conspired to mutiny. The mutineers seized Aeneas and his two
faithful followers and left them to die in the

Descriptive Essay About Early Birthday
Early Birthday Present It was a beautiful morning on July 5th, 2015. Outside the birds were
chirping and the sun was beaming through my window. I had just woken up as both of my
parents came into my room, and told me to come downstairs for a surprise. In my mind, I
thought something had arrived from Amazon and they decided to give it to me now as an early
birthday present. After lying in bed for a little while on my phone, I decided to get up. I got
dressed, brushed my teeth, and went downstairs to see what this was all about. Right when I
turned the corner into the kitchen, I saw a poster board that said SURPRISE! HAPPY

Four Aphorism Analysis
Every person capable of thinking and processing has a different set of guidelines and mindsets
for his or her life. These guidelines tend to be words or mottos designed to help guide each
individual through life and/or hardship that may arise. In the short time i ve had in this world, i
ve been able to narrow my thoughts down to four basic principles. One: I believe i am here to
learn about and experience everything this life has to offer. Two: It is important to approach new
information openly, but with some skepticism. Not every piece of information presented to me will
be true. Three: harm no one; there is no reason is good enough to cause suffering of any kind. Four:

This is a reminder I like to call Comforting Nihilism. Nihilism is believe that meaningless, but
there is another less dreary way to regard it that i find reassuring. Essentially, it is the idea that
nothing matters, so life is limitless. Gandhi sums this up by saying, almost everything you do in
life will be insignificant. But it is very important that you do it. In comparison to the infinity of
stars and space forever expanding in every direction, I am very small. This also means I am
small enough that universe does not hinge on my decisions. I can eat an entire cake, or fail a
test, or move to Canada, or rob a bank. The world will not end if I do something that makes me
happy, or make a mistake. At same time, there is so much I could change so much in my own life.
Eating a cake, moving to Canada, robbing a bank, failing a test. All of these actions could affect
my life in a monumental way, and at the same time, they are completely meaningless. Everyone is
both an insignificant speck, a blink in the history of the universe, and a great powerful being,
capable of changing everything with one

Analysis Of The Movie Stagecoach
Despite my childhood love for westerns, particularly those starring John Wayne, I had never
seen Stagecoach in its entirety. Therefore, I highly anticipated watching this movie in my class.
While not one of my favorite westerns, I enjoyed Stagecoach and appreciated it for how it
helped define the genre. This film follows a group of people aboard the titular mode of
transportation as they travel from one town, through Apache territory, to another. The passengers
include a prostitute run out of town (Claire Trevor), the driver (Andy Devine), a gambler who
fought for the confederacy (John Carradine), an alcoholic doctor (Thomas Mitchell), a wife of a
solider (Louise Platt), a Marshal escorting an outlaw (George Bancroft), a whiskey salesman
(Donald Meek), a corrupt banker (Berton Churchill) and an outlaw out for revenge (John Wayne).
This ensemble cast worked perfectly together. Each actor brought believability and depth to their
role, while also crafting a memorable character. With that being said, a few performers stand out.
Wayne, in his first major role, is already incredibly charismatic as Ringo Kid. Trevor excels at
making her character more human and relatable, an essential aspect of the film. Mitchell, who won
an Oscar for best supporting actor, is great. He s funny and brings depth and humanity to his
character. Lastly, Bancroft impresses with his portrayal of a level headed, though not entirely pure,
lawman. Although I very much liked the acting, my favorite

Moral Courage In Roger Rosenblatt s The Man In The Water
People have moral courage whether they realized it or not. It is in our everyday lives and we
used it. Moral courage could be something small or big in different cases. The Man in the Water
is a Formal essay written by Roger Rosenblatt. It is about a plane crash in Washington D.C. and
an unknown man risked his life to save others. In The Man in the Water , Roger Rosenblatt:
moral courage is developed through the use of symbolism and conflict. Moral Courage is
developed through conflict which the main character goes against the opposing force. When the
plane crashed in the water, there were only a few survivors. Several people were surrounding the
plane crash site with news reporters and the police. The rescue helicopter came and tried to save
other people in the plane. When the helicopter came, the unknown man went around trying to
save the survivors. He came back in forth rescuing one people at a time knowing that he risked
his life. Every time they lowered a lifeline and flotation ring to him, he passed it on to another of
passengers (Rosenblatt). The man in the water fought against nature to save the people and he
put his fear a side. His enemy was nature and nature tried to took the survivor s lives away. He
put nature into a hold for a long moment to save other people. Near the end, he saved all of the
people except himself. He purposely sacrifice himself which he knew from the start. He knew that

A Comparison Of George Sand And Frederic Chopin s The...
In nineteenth century France power and success relied greatly on your gender. If you were a
man you were supposed to be powerful and be a womanizer. If you were a woman you were
supposed to be dependent on men and act properly when in public. Sand was an independent
woman who wanted to be an acclaimed writer based on her writings rather than her looks. Chopin
wanted to be successful without causing an uproar of emotions. George Sand and Frederic Chopin
defied these social conventions for the way genders were supposed to act in the nineteenth century.
George Sand broke the social conventions in the nineteenth century in a wild way. She was a woman
that assumed the name of a man. Her birth name was Aurore Lucile Dupin. She took the name of ...

They would step out of their gender roles to create masterpieces. It seemed back in the nineteenth
century that both of them were out of their minds. Now a days, they would be praised for being
pioneers. Pioneers that did not let anything stop them. That lesson could be applied to life now.
Sand did not let the fact that she was a woman stop her from taking many lovers and becoming a
coveted writer in France. Lessons could also be learned from Chopin. Like how a man should
not be afraid to be with a successful woman. He should also be man enough to now that he does
not have to be the dominant one in the relationship. As much as their works of literature and
music should be coveted; Their passion for being the selves unapologetically should be coveted
as much if not more. I know that after watching this film and learning how they were, I feel more
confident being myself. Much like nowadays with the revolution being created by Caitlynn
Jenner and how we perceive people. Instead, of looking at the exterior we should look at the
emotional make up of a person. And take each person as an individual. Not a group of people like
being associated as just a female or male. Both Sand and Chopin thought of the person within rather
than the person people saw on the

Essay Religion in American Politics
The United States of America has the most diverse religious population in the world. In places like
Iraq, Syria, Israel, Afghanistan, Yemen, and other countries too numerous to mention, countless
lives are lost over religious differences. In America, a Protestant can live happily next door to a
Jew, who might live across the street from a Muslim, or a Catholic, or a Sikh, or even a Humanist!
This is in no small way attributed to the fact that the US Constitution s First Amendment includes
what is known as the establishment clause, which states that Congress shall make no law respecting
an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, effectively separating affairs of
religious institutions from secular,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was starting to look as if politics were beginning to become more secular. As it is well known,
after Kennedy s assassination, Lyndon B. Johnson carried out the rest of Kennedy s term, and then
ran for reelection in 1964. Johnson, a left leaning Democrat found himself up against Barry
Goldwater from the right minded Republican Party. Early on in the 20th century, many of
Protestant denominations had adopted progressive, social reformist doctrines, that many people
still value to this day. Despite being Protestant, Goldwater s platform took a much more
conservative approach. This ended up backfiring on him, however, as many Christian publications
stated that they opposed Goldwater s policies. He was further stigmatized by the religious
publication The Christian Century as turning his patriotic rhetoric into religious nationalism. To
make matters worse for Goldwater, in October of 1964, less than a month before the general
election, 725 Episcopalian clergy and laymen from forty one states signed a resolution accusing
him of a transparent exploitation of racialism. Richard Nixon, a Republican and ex Vice President
at the time, claimed that these allegations were the most vicious in political history. As a result,
Lyndon Johnson won the 1964 election in an unprecedented landslide victory, with Barry
Goldwater only winning six states: his native Arizona, and five states in the heart of the Bible Belt
(Kosmin 1993:174 5). While religious leaders in the end

Implementing A Sustainable Society Out Of Our Own Country
For my sustainable society I redesigned the central United States and set up new rules,
regulations and a code of responsibility for U.S citizens to start abiding by in order to become
sustainable by reducing carbon emissions and becoming more of a community based society. I
choose to do the U.S because I thought I was an interesting task to think about what it would take
to make a sustainable society out of our own country. The U.S is the second top producer of CO2
emissions in the world and it directly correlates without dependency on fossil fuels for producing
energy. (EPA, 2008). This is why my first thought about creating a sustainable society out of the
U.S then we would have to greatly reduce, and if not that, totally abolish natural gasproduction in
the U.S. Obviously in a real life setting this would seem that it would tear the country apart however
I think the solution would be to start encouraging and rewarding those individuals and organizations
that a using renewable energyand give them things such as take breaks and government funding.
At the same time we would need to stop subsidizing gas slowly over time in order to make it
more appealing to the average American to switch from natural gas. Renewable energy companies
would be able to create enough jobs to replace those in the natural gas industry. According to the
International Renewable Energy Association renewable energy has already created over 7.7
million jobs worldwide (IRENA, 2016). The U.S gas and oil

  • 2. Movie, Troy, By Wolfgang Petersen Film adaptations often do a less than adequate job of representing the book off of which they are based. Occasionally, a director with the correct vision and drive will produce a movie that leaves the audience screaming for more. One must take a step back and decide whether it is more important for a movie to be entertaining, or follow the plot of the book from which its story is taken. In the 2004 film Troy, by Wolfgang Petersen, the story, although interesting, fails to correctly follow the plot of Homer s The Iliadin multiple instances. From the overall timeline of the story to the main focus and character development, much creative license was taken in the production. While the movie is certainly fantastic, many differences exist between its main focus and that of The Iliad. The Iliad opens with the Achaeans approaching the Trojan shore. Speaking to Agamemnon from across the water is a priest of Apollo. He is asking the lord of men to return his daughter Chryseis. When Agamemnon refuses, the priest prays to Apollo and asks him to exchange his tears for arrows. Agamemnon s disrespect for the priest results in massacre for the Achaean s at the hands of Apollo. He takes his bow and rains plague down on their troops, killing them in droves, Over against the ships he dropped to a knee, let fly a shaft and a terrifying clash rang out from the great silver bow [...] launching a piercing shaft at the men themselves (Book 1. ll,55 58). This clearly shows a great example of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Industrial Development And Population Growth Industrial development and population growth have created a surge in global demand for energy. The tension in the Middle East and the sharp rise in oil prices since the 1990 s had Western countries like the US scrambling to secure alternative energy sources. While solar and wind energy is flourishing, energy industries have pursued more aggressive means of tapping the earth s resources. Continued mining, drilling, and especially hydraulic fracturing have been a game changer for the US. Although industrialized energy developmentis making great strides in harnessing the earth s energy resources, it is also threatening the natural environment and the quality of life in many communities. Fracking refers to hydraulic or hydro fracturing of rock formations to stimulate and extract natural gas and oil. The process involves drilling down through sedimentary rocks for thousands of feet, then sideways for miles, pumping millions of gallons of water, sand, and chemicals at high pressure to open fractures in the rocks, allowing gas and oil to flow. This relatively new technology is also being used for resource exploration by geothermal developers. Prior to fracking, it was too expensive to exploit shale gas , but it is now being viewed as a way for the United States (US) to become independent from foreign oil. Fracking also brings a host of new public health and environmental concerns; drilling chemicals and fracking fluids are highly toxic and include known carcinogens. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Edgar Vilhelm Analysis Edgar Vilhelm. Aspiring author, playwriter, sound mixer, multi instrumentalist, and multi media artist. As a self described jack of all trades, master of none , Edgar surely doesn t carry the attitude of master of none at all. Upon first meeting him he seems like a very humble guy, but after being his friend for some time he reeks of self importance. It s actually very comedic. Me: First, give me a quick description of who you are. One of the best minds of our generation. Oft referred to as Edgar the Victorian, I am a 20 year old white, cis het male atheist, a painter, multi instrumentalist, writer, and soon to be filmmaker. I think the first story I wrote was a Godzilla knock off, which I called Space Monster. I even made a sequel for it a little while later lol. Next big writing project I remember was in 4th grade, for science class. Our teacher told us to write a story about the changes between states of matter, and molecules moving. The first one ended up being a parody of Star Wars, in which my friends and I turned into Star Wars characters and went to space to battle aliens who destroyed the sun. When I was in elementary school, I and some friends of mine took the Space Monster concept and decided to go in sort of an Ultraman direction with it, by trying to make it into a show and having it be sort of a monster of the week thing, in which every episode, Space Monster would have to battle new monsters. I tell you, I was drawing kaiju left and right for that. The stories were really fucking involved as well. Next, around 5th 6th grade, I began getting into anime. Hence, I started coming up with anime characters, and demons for them to fight, and such. More recently, I ve shifted the focus onto poetry, and found my style becoming more aligned with the gritty realists, like Bukowski, Carver, Ginsberg, and Heston. Poetry isn t any more than a hobby for me self therapy, to put it better. I view it as language unhinged. I use whatever visuals or words I need to convey exactly how I ... • 7. Keats Concept Of Ambiguity In Ode To A Nightingale Negative Capability Keats By MarГa Andrea Moar Ares Essay question: Can an imaginative engagement with poetry promote one s ability to tolerate ambivalence and uncertainty? In your response, draw upon Keats s concept of Negative Capability through an analysis of any poem or poems studied on this module. This essay deals mainly with Keats concept of Negative Capability, which belongs to the realm of Romantic poetry, and with the question of how Negative Capability, as one operation of the imagination, can help us to tolerate uncertainty and ambiguity. Hence, imagination, nature, and self awareness are key points we have to go through before everything else, since they are fundamental in the Romantic period and are important to understand... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The poetic voice feels no envy of the nightingale but admits his pain when observes the excess of joy that infuses the bird s singing. Here we see the paradoxical relationship between pleasure and pain. The poet wants to escape from human anguish, gray, sadness: That I might drink, and leave the world unseen,/ And with thee fade away into the forest dim: (ll. 19 20) by meeting the bird, by making possible a union with it through death ( hemlock and Lethe suggest decline, death rather than rapture: hemlock is a poison when taken in larger quantities, and Lethe is a river of the underworld). Because he did not succeed in that union as we see in the very response of the poet to the song of the nightingale, which is based on images of decline, the poetic voice is going to try to compensate or neutralize the death related draughts of the opening lines by replacing them with draughts of a different kind: hard drinks. It seems the poetic voice wanted to escape the world he was living in by getting drunk with vintage ; the image of a kind of burial, of the deep delved earth, is still there but here it is turned into a positive image that evokes a kind of pastoral atmosphere. He suggest, also, that wine is the true, the blushful Hippocrene which may lead us to think his aim is not getting drunk, but getting poetic inspiration (Hippocrene is the name of a fountain on Mount Helicon sacred to the Muses but it also allusively means poetic inspiration). He aims to get pleasure by leaving this world with the wings of Poetry to find the Beauty, here represented by the song of the nightingale which, like the Nightingale, is immortal: Fade far ... • 8. Why Death Is Accepted As A Natural Part Of The Process Essay Similarly, a study taken from the International Journal of Older People Nursing shows that that in one third of the cases, nursing staff members who were caring for residents who died with dementia reported that they experienced what they perceived as a high emotional burden (Albers, Block, Stichele 2013). Healthcare workers in another study reported feelings of guilt and moral dilemma regarding patient deaths (Dwyer, Hansebo, Andershed, and Ternestedt 2009). In this same study it is important to note that the participants acknowledged that deathis accepted as a natural part of the process, however it was the circumstances under which the residents died and the employees employee s feelings of personal responsibility for meeting individualized needs of the residents that upset the employees the most. Most caretakers enter enters the profession due to a desire help others, and it is inevitable that they form bonds with the residents they care for. This feeling of responsibility coupled with the sheer frequency of experiencing the death of residents they care for can in turn generate depressive symptoms. What Is Not Currently Known About Depression and Healthcare Workers Though studies have been done regarding the prevalence of depression among nursing home and palliative care residents, little has been formed on the healthcare workers that come in contact with them. As the above referenced study from the journal Palliative Medicine puts it, There has been a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Liturgical Dance In Modern Times LAQUISHA WILLIAMS HUMN 1101 MRS. FOWLER RESEARCH PAPER Liturgical Dance (Ancient Times to the Modern Times) In the world that we live in today there are many things that has been passed down from year to year. In the years such as 1400 and 1440 B.C. dancing in which we refer to now as liturgical dancing was first introduced. Liturgical dance has as its purpose the deepening and focusing of the worship experience; it is not merely ornamental or decorative. (Branigan). Liturgical dance is a very uplifting form of art; starting from the biblical times and even up until now. The history of liturgical dance begins in the Bible. The Bible doesn t mention much about dance. But, it does mention dances of celebration during two important historical events. The first event was the crossing of the Red Sea. Miriam, prophetess and sister of Moses brought together several women in song and in praise after the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20, 21). The second event occurs when David brings back the arc of the covenant to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6). Both major events showed the significance of praise dancing in rejoicing and thankfulness for what the Lord have done, even for your triumphs. (DavenPort). Although the times has changed, the style of liturgical dancing has changed in some ways, but has also remained the same in other ways. There are many different attributes that allows this form of art to be so uplifting. The types of attributes that causes this type of dance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Cause And Effect Of Pollution The earth is 4.543 billion years old. Our ancestors have been estimated to date back to six million years, with modern human life dating to 200,000 years ago (Reed). The effects of humanity on earth can be exhibited by the increase of pollution within our world. As our population begins to grow, so does our carbon footprint upon the earth. On a more localized scale, the Central Valley is a mecca to poor air quality and elevating pollution levels. An assortment of environmental factors increases pollution levels. The central Valley is a mecca for the climate, natural, industrial, mobile and agricultural components that equate to this growing problem. Pollution, otherwise known as PM, or particulate matter, is essentially any substance that is not made up of water. PM is most commonly made of dust, ash, smoke, fumes, vapors and mists, emitted from a source and absorbed into the ozone. Particulate matter that is emitted directly from a source, is called primary PM. Particulate matter that is formed in the atmosphere by gas is called secondary PM. There are two certified health based standards classifying particulate matter: PM10, for particles smaller than 10 microns, and PM2.5, for particles smaller than 2.5. PM10 is made up of course dust particles. Common PM10 sources include: crushing or grinding operations, as well as soil stirred up in our valley s vast fields, or dirt roads. PM2.5 is composed of finer particles. Elements most commonly produced by combustion, motor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Islam And Western Imperialism In Islam Although the Islamic world has faced many challenges throughout history, Islam s encounter with Western imperialism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has had the greatest impact on contemporary Islam. These encounters with Western powers influenced and shaped the Muslim world by introducing Islamto modernity. The Islamic world s varied reaction to these challenges of modernity affects a wide range of issues in Islam today. To understand how the Muslim world reacted to Western influence, we must understand what they were reacting to. With the fall of the Ottoman Empire, European political ideas permeated the Middle East. Muslims were forced to respond to ideas of nationhood, nationalism, democracy, and sovereignty.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Modernists claimed these institutions were not foreign to Islam and could coexist within an Islamic state. Rashid al Rida argued Islam was democratic and representative because Islamic leadership is determined through consensus of the community. According to Rida, an Islamic state requires Islamic legal systems, where the uluma are representatives of the people. Other Islamic modernists such as Muhammad Abduh and Muhammad Iqbal also attempted to balance Western ideologies with the Islamic faith. According to Abduh, reason and science were complementary to Islam. Iqbal also believed some Western ideas were compatible with Islam. Iqbal applied reasoning to help understand Islamic female inheritance laws. One interpretation of these laws is that a woman is worth half a man. Iqbal argued the share of female inheritance is not based on a woman s value, but rather on social context specific to a certain period. He claimed these laws applied to a time when women had less financial responsibility than men. This type of logic and reasoning still exists in contemporary Pakistani law. Both Abduh and Iqbal believed certain aspects of Western influence could be applied to Islamic society, as long as those ideas did not contradict Islam. Other movements within Islam have directly challenged the Islamic modernists ideas on Western influence. Unlike Islamic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The happiness of the citizens in Omelas depends on the suffering of a child locked in a closet. She briefly describes the contrast between the child s situation and the citizens position, portraying a moral dilemma, which is when you have to choose to do one of two equally unpleasant things. The folks were not simple folk, though they were happy (1312). They would not use the word cheer anymore because they weren t cheerful (1312), but yet all smiles would become archaic (1312). They didn t have slaves or swords nor did they use their people as barbarians (1312). Their children were happy, mature and intelligent; perhaps happiness is based on what is neither necessary nor destructive. Omelas strikes some as all smiles and good people. Feuds between Siam and Malacca were also alleviated because of Chinese involvement. The voyages of the treasure fleet were not to inhabit foreign lands, but to open up foreign dealings and international relations. Zheng He managed this and even established trading posts in many of the places he stopped at. These trading posts were also used as warehouses to store goods until they could be sold. He also built a chain of dispatch stations the merchants could stop and rest at. The dispatch stations were spaced out so that overnight stays would be easier for travelers and traders. All of this also helped China?s economy by making trades easier for merchants. Chinese authority also spread around the world because many Chinese traders moved out of the country to work in the warehouses. Many consequences were brought about as a result of these voyages, some were good and some were bad. The most apparent good consequence is that trade with the world was opened up to China. China was also at the summit of its global power, and practically every country paid China homage. However because of China?s newfound trading routes, the people became too self sufficient on overseas goods and this brought about piracy and corrupt trade. • 18. The Vertebrate Kidney 1.1 Introduction The vertebrate kidney is an important organ that serves vital roles in waste excretion, osmoregulation, metabolites reabsorption, maintenance of acid base balance and even hormone secretion. Nephron is the basic functional unit of a kidney which consists of a blood filter (the glomerulus) and renal tubules that joins to a collecting duct. Nephron filters blood plasma and the filtrate is further modified and refined in the tubules via selective solute reabsorption and secretion. The consequential unwanted waste is drained into collecting ducts and excreted (Reilly 2000; Jacobsen, 1981). Through the course of mammalian development, a series of three kidney structures arises sequentially from the intermediate mesoderm (IM). These include the pronephros, the mesonephros and the metanephros. The pronephros is the first embryonic kidney. Degeneration of the pronephros is accompanied by the formation of a second kidney, the mesonephros. The mesonephros functions transiently until the development of the metanephros, after which it will rapidly degenerate leaving the metanephros to serve as the adult kidney in higher vertebrates including birds, reptiles, and mammals. Lower vertebrates like fish never form a metanephros and instead utilize the mesonephros during adult life. Despite this difference, each kidney form is comprised of nephrons that exhibit a similar composition (Wingert Davidson, 2008; Dressler, 2006). Extensive study in mammalian model has ... I wanted to show that Voltaire believed that the enlightenment was the time where religious superstitions and ignorance was to be replaced with rational thinking, and tolerance. The highest legal court, the Supreme Court has nine justices sworn to always provide the people who come before them with good governance and equal justiceunder law. The best kind of judgeis a qualified and qualitative judge who renders to its community to sharpen a nation despite the complexity of the court s procedures. We are each exposed to over 2,000 ads a day, constituting perhaps the most powerful educational force in society. The average American will spend one and one half years of his or her life watching television commercials. The ads sell a great deal more than products. They sell images, makeup, skin and hair care, diet pills, and cosmetic surgery as a means of normalcy. In this paper, I will argue how the effects of advertisements on a person s identity can cause low self esteem and lead to health issues. First, I will explain what a person s identity means. A person s identity is who you are, the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define you. Media portrayals of women through advertising and characters who are then, airbrushed and perfect, contribute to norms that reinforce this unattainable image of beauty. According to Maggie Vlazny, a mental health professional, Self esteem is a core identity issue, essential to personal validation and our ability to experience joy. Once achieved, it comes from the inside out. But it is assaulted or stunted from the outside in. The following is a listing of security metrics and their definitions: In the area of Incident Management the following metrics apply: Mean Cost per Incident This the average cost per security incident from a dollars and time perspective. The cost per incident is often measured in terms of opportunity cost of how the time could have been invested in other tasks instead of solving the security incident (Shari, 2009). The grade itself was higher than that of the previous assignment which made me feel good as it shows I am slowly improving in certain aspects of my writing. I still need to work on my comma usage, review subject verb agreement and review topic sentences for a summary paragraph. Next, I would like to talk about sentence variety, which I mentioned in my last post. This time, I used a variety of sentences in my writing and it really made a difference in the tone and flow of the paragraph, so I believe I ve grasped how to use sentence variety effectively. I would also like to talk about MLA formatting, which I also mentioned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The four elements are: a pressure (influential) group; a social condition; a set of values and norms; and collective action. Taking these four elements as building blocks the following definition of a social problem may be arrived at: A social condition, known to a pressure group as posing a threat to current values and norms, that requires collective action to rectify (Pretorius, Le Roux, Lesufi, Liebenberg, Martin Rautenbach Zegeye in Ferreira 2005:87). At the eve of independence, during the 60 s for a handful of African countries, urbanization, in most cases, was well sought after (social condition). Western powers had developed following paths of industrialization and urbanization and the same was thought possible in Africa (pressure groups). The basic tenants of this assumption went as follows: Capital distributed from the West to Africa was to be invested in industrial enterprises in centers that wielded political power. This newly found industry would promote manufacturing and encourage domestic savings. Jobs would be created and the capital accumulated reinvested in development projects (de Beer et al 2005: 115 125). And thus, by following this path Africa would become self sufficient (values and norms). However, five decades later Africa has failed to develop as rapidly or to the extent to which the West has. Urban poverty escalates daily. A handful of problems face the African city: insufficient provision of jobs, poorly delivered public services, a weakening revenue base, and escalating pollution levels. According to de Beer et al. (2005:116 117), it is projected that by 2030 half of Africa s population will have become urbanized, most of whom will live in poverty (social problem). There are some solutions on offer. Within Baroque artworks, a high sense of contrast was employed which were absent in Renaissance art pieces. This is evident in the painting Judith Beheading Holofernes that clearly depicts the actions taking place in a mid motion capture in a gory and theatrical depiction. The painting also takes place in front of a black background emphasising this contrast. What Are Xerxes Attitudes Towards The Spartans Primary Source Essay #1 Today when people talk about the Spartans they think about the movie 300 that was created that shows 300 Spartan warriors facing Xerxes army of 150,000 men. What they do not know are the actual real accounts that happened during the time of this particular Persian invasion. When Herodotus wrote the Histories he mentions this battle in great detail. His thirst for knowledge gives us a better perspective of Spartans and Persians since his writings have lasted since they were written. In the Histories Herodotus gives pure examples of Xerxes attitudes towards the Greeks along with his superstitious and tyrannical behavior. Leonidas was superstitious about the oracle that determined a king shall fall from Sparta or Sparta itself will be destroyed. The people of Sparta must have had much intelligence to understand how to create this choke point of the other army. Many of the different battles even after Thermopylae show that the Spartans were versatile toward warfare. Honor is shown throughout this narrative. Demaratus warns Xerxes about facing the Greeks in battle and talks about the men being free. No matter what number of enemies they face to either conquer them or die trying. The elements used within the excerpt are all contributed to create and draw a larger focus to the comedic impact trying to be pursued; this is done successfully due to the use of human context (roles and relationships), tension (tension of the task, relationship, mystery, and surprise) and movement (e.g. physical actions, gestures and facial expressions). As the book is about the creation of this atomic weapon, the entirety of it relates to morals in some shape or form. Throughout the reading of the play I kept thinking about the moral implications of the work they were doing and what might each individual character be thinking of it. There were two parts of the play that made me really come up with this question in particular. The first was in chapter 22 Hiroshima, when it was talking about the bombing of Hiroshima. I can agree with the idea that basing actions on morals can help to ensure that people are not being irrational in their thought processes and that people s needs are more likely put ahead of individual wants. If morals were not involved, then decisions would most likely be made depending on what would advance the position of that person the most or on other selfish wants. At the same time, without morals being looked at, many lives could be lost because there is no clear way to judge things and come up with an agreement. Without morals, it can be extremely tough to figure out right from wrong and how a group or individual should act. Conversely, by looking at it from the perspective that morals should not be the basis of decision making, you can see that if we don t use them, then many people can get hurt as a result. If people make choices without thinking of the consequences or about what is important to them and the people around them, the wrong choice may be made. While morals shouldn t be the only thing considered, they must be taken into account to ensure the right things are being done. If we only base our actions on morals, then some very important past discoveries may not have been made. If people only consider morals than not only will decisions be biased as each person has different morals, but many things in history may not have been accomplished. Therefore, I highly anticipated watching this movie in my class. While not one of my favorite westerns, I enjoyed Stagecoach and appreciated it for how it helped define the genre. This film follows a group of people aboard the titular mode of transportation as they travel from one town, through Apache territory, to another. The passengers include a prostitute run out of town (Claire Trevor), the driver (Andy Devine), a gambler who fought for the confederacy (John Carradine), an alcoholic doctor (Thomas Mitchell), a wife of a solider (Louise Platt), a Marshal escorting an outlaw (George Bancroft), a whiskey salesman (Donald Meek), a corrupt banker (Berton Churchill) and an outlaw out for revenge (John Wayne). This ensemble cast worked perfectly together. Each actor brought believability and depth to their role, while also crafting a memorable character. With that being said, a few performers stand out. Wayne, in his first major role, is already incredibly charismatic as Ringo Kid. Trevor excels at making her character more human and relatable, an essential aspect of the film. This is in no small way attributed to the fact that the US Constitution s First Amendment includes what is known as the establishment clause, which states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, effectively separating affairs of religious institutions from secular,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was starting to look as if politics were beginning to become more secular. As it is well known, after Kennedy s assassination, Lyndon B. Johnson carried out the rest of Kennedy s term, and then ran for reelection in 1964. Johnson, a left leaning Democrat found himself up against Barry Goldwater from the right minded Republican Party. Early on in the 20th century, many of Protestant denominations had adopted progressive, social reformist doctrines, that many people still value to this day. Despite being Protestant, Goldwater s platform took a much more conservative approach. This ended up backfiring on him, however, as many Christian publications stated that they opposed Goldwater s policies. He was further stigmatized by the religious publication The Christian Century as turning his patriotic rhetoric into religious nationalism. To make matters worse for Goldwater, in October of 1964, less than a month before the general election, 725 Episcopalian clergy and laymen from forty one states signed a resolution accusing him of a transparent exploitation of racialism. Richard Nixon, a Republican and ex Vice President at the time, claimed that these allegations were the most vicious in political history. As a result, Lyndon Johnson won the 1964 election in an unprecedented landslide victory, with Barry Goldwater only winning six states: his native Arizona, and five states in the heart of the Bible Belt (Kosmin 1993:174 5). • 55. Implementing A Sustainable Society Out Of Our Own Country For my sustainable society I redesigned the central United States and set up new rules, regulations and a code of responsibility for U.S citizens to start abiding by in order to become sustainable by reducing carbon emissions and becoming more of a community based society. I choose to do the U.S because I thought I was an interesting task to think about what it would take to make a sustainable society out of our own country. The U.S is the second top producer of CO2 emissions in the world and it directly correlates without dependency on fossil fuels for producing energy. (EPA, 2008). This is why my first thought about creating a sustainable society out of the U.S then we would have to greatly reduce, and if not that, totally abolish natural gasproduction in the U.S. Obviously in a real life setting this would seem that it would tear the country apart however I think the solution would be to start encouraging and rewarding those individuals and organizations that a using renewable energyand give them things such as take breaks and government funding. At the same time we would need to stop subsidizing gas slowly over time in order to make it more appealing to the average American to switch from natural gas. Renewable energy companies would be able to create enough jobs to replace those in the natural gas industry. According to the International Renewable Energy Association renewable energy has already created over 7.7 million jobs worldwide (IRENA, 2016). The U.S gas and oil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Leishmaniasis Outline Outline Scientific name: Leishmania in humans called Leishmaniasis Common name: Leishmania Spp. Taxonomic Classification: Genus of trypanosomes Complete life cycle: Human stages: 1) Sand fly injects promastigotes into the skin during a blood meal. Promastigotes are phagocytized by neutrophils that are rapidly recruited to the bite site 3) Infected neutrophils release the parasites which are then consumed by macrophages .4) Promastigotes transform into amastigotes inside macrophages. 5) Amastigotes multiply in cells (including macrophages) of various tissues. Sand Fly Stages 6) Sand fly ingests infected macrophages when it takes a blood meal 7) Ingestion of parasitized cell 8) Amastigotes transform into promastigotes in midgut 9) Promastigotes divide and migrate to the anterior midgut and foregut 10) Sand fly injects promastigotes into the skin during a blood meal. Zoonotic potential: found in parts of the tropics, subtropics, and southern Europe, starting to see some cases in usa. transmission by bite of sand fly that has fed off an infected mammalian host. Treatment should be undertaken on an outpatient basis. Due to the chronic wasting that can occur with leishmaniasis, it is important to provide a good high quality protein diet or a diet appropriate for renal insufficiency if this manifestation. Due to trouble obtaining certain drugs in the United States, treatment is recommended to begin with allopurinol (ZyloricВ®). This drug is efficient and relatively non toxic when used as a maintenance drug. Clinical decrease is often achieved when used alone. Relapses are common when treatment stops. Complete cures are rare but survival occurs in 80% of cases over 4 years if renal failure is not present when treatment is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
