Working With Non Compliant Students
1) Give the student positive teacher recognition.
2) Monitor the classroom frequently and intervene
proactively, at the earliest indication of misbehavior.
3) Speak calmly and respectfully.
4) Convey the message to the student that you will not
tolerate the misbehavior.
5) Teach the student more positive ways of behaving.
6) Develop a classroom crisis response plan.

Strategies for addressing behaviors:
• Allow the student a Cool-Down Break.
• Ask open-ended questions.
• Assign a reflective processing essay after misbehavior.
• Emphasize the positive in teacher requests (“Do X”
instead of “Don’t do Y”)
• Expand the range of classroom behavior interventions.
• Give praise that is specific and does not embarrass the
student.

• Have the student participate in creating a behavior plan.
• Keep responses calm, brief and businesslike.
• Listen actively.
• Offer the student a face-saving out.
• Project calmness when approaching an escalating
student.
• Reward alternative (positive) behaviors.
• State teacher directives as two-part choice statements.
“You can choose to do X or choose to do Y. What is
your choice?”

In-Seat Activity
• Break into groups of 3 to 4.
• Discuss other strategies for working with not
compliant students.
• You should have at least three.
• Provide a detailed process for meeting students needs.

Working With Non Compliant Students 1) Give the student positive teacher recognition. 2) Monitor the classroom frequently and intervene proactively, at the earliest indication of misbehavior. 3) Speak calmly and respectfully. 4) Convey the message to the student that you will not tolerate the misbehavior. 5) Teach the student more positive ways of behaving. 6) Develop a classroom crisis response plan. Strategies for addressing behaviors: • Allow the student a Cool-Down Break. • Ask open-ended questions. • Assign a reflective processing essay after misbehavior. • Emphasize the positive in teacher requests (“Do X” instead of “Don’t do Y”) • Expand the range of classroom behavior interventions. • Give praise that is specific and does not embarrass the student.   • 4. • Have the student participate in creating a behavior plan. • Keep responses calm, brief and businesslike. • Listen actively. • Offer the student a face-saving out. • Project calmness when approaching an escalating student. • Reward alternative (positive) behaviors. • State teacher directives as two-part choice statements. “You can choose to do X or choose to do Y.
