Chicago’s architecture is famous throughout the world and one style is referred to as the Chicago school.
In the history of architecture the first Chicago school was a school of architects . active in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century .
They were among the first to promote the new technologies of steel-frame construction in commercial Buildings.
A “second Chicago school” with a modernist aesthetic emerged in the 1940’s through 1970’s.
Which pioneered new buildings technologies and structural system such as the tube-frame structure.
The Kanchanjunga Apartments, designed by Charles Correa, are a direct response to the present culture, the escalating urbanization, and the climatic conditions for the region. They pay homage to the vernacular architecture that once stood on the site before the development in a number of ways. More on Kanchanjunga Apartments after the break.

Regional Differences in Innovation and Economic PerformanceRyan MacNeil
My paper from the 2011 Atlantic Schools of Business conference:
Innovation is a key mechanism for improving economic productivity. The literature suggests approaches to innovation are socially embedded, and protean industrial cultures outperform autarkic ones. This study reports on differences in innovation culture across Canada’s provincial ICT industries, and the impact of those differences on employment growth and decline.

2. Meritz Office Building
B u s a n K o r e a
Located at a unique intersection near the port of
Busan, this tower will be the dominant building in
a newly developing region. Deriving its form from
the shape of the property which, in turn, is created
by being at the apex of the diagonal intersection
of two primary streets, and located adjacent to a
memorial park, this tower will emerge from the
mature trees of the park as a sentinel object in the
city.

3. Its typical floor plates are both column free and
extraordinary in their efficiency for office layout.
The penthouse floors can be configured for special
uses or functions, and below the lobby level is a
gathering space that will serve as a wedding chapel.
The wedding chapel has its own motor court and
lobby adjacent to the park.
The general architectural character of the building
seeks to represent the professionalism of the Meritz
Securities Business and its affiliated tenants while
providing its employees a rich environment and a
efficient and satisfying work place. The tower will
be a statement to the city of Busan representing
the 21st Century in form, materials and energy
consumption.
5. The imposing 120 story tower overlooking Huandai
Beach and the South China Sea is a monumental
beacon for living at the ultimate beach in Korea.
Designed as a sophisticated structure able to
withstand typhoon winds as well as affording views
from every unit, this tower serves also as a sentinel
for the water park, and public amenities at its base.
Beyond the primary use as tower condominiums,
the program includes a luxury hotel at the top of
the tower, as well as time shared condominiums,
retail, and a business hotel. The public amenities
are integrated into the retail and water
entertainment facilities including underwater hotel
rooms, spa, restaurants, aquarium and boating.
7. At the point where the city meets the ocean and
the sky is the intersection of Ocean Avenue and San
Vicente in Santa Monica. In this unique location a
design is required to not only meet the program for
very high end condominiums with ocean views, but
also a contribution to the architecture of the city
that emanates from the uniqueness of the site. Like
a bird taking off in the wind or a fan spread against
the sky beyond, this building radiates from the
block by block housing along San Vicente towards
the horizon beyond the Pacific.
Each unit along the street will have commanding
views of the Malibu Headlands as well as the
Pacific Ocean. The vehicular entry is by means of
an elegant motor court and individual elevators
to each town house from the parking level below.
Guests can park in the motor court or in the
visitor parking at the first level of parking near the
sunlit filled atrium. Within each unit is a light well
that brings sunlight into all areas of the unit and
to each floor. While most of the units are town
homes there are also two duplex units on the east
end, penthouse units on the roof and six medium
income units on the other side of the courtyard.
8. Century Plaza Towers Lobby Renovation
L o s A n g e l e s , C a l i f o r n i a
Built originally as one of the most important
iconographic buildings in the Westside of Los
Angeles and designed by Minoru Yamasaki, the
Century Plaza Towers had evolved over time to a
condition in which new requirements needed to be
met as well as a general refurbishing of materials
and details. Our work has at its basis a deep respect
for the quality of the original building. We have
sought in each decision to enhance that design
intent while altering the functions where necessary.
Vehicular access has evolved to where a valet motor
court is now designed for the East Side of the
Towers. This new drop off required a substantial re-
grading of the plaza which necessitated a means to
turn back onto a single point of entry and egress.
2 0 0 7
9. While the project owners had initiated another new office building to the
west and joined the two with a new park, our direction and understanding
was to achieve an integration between the old and the new. Accordingly,
similar details and materials have been used throughout the project and
while enclosing the base of the building to the“drip line”, we have used the
clearest of glass available along with mullion-less support so that the view to
the new park can remain as open as the building originally was with no glass.
The interior functions of the lobby have everything to do with orientation,
security and quality suitable to the level of tenants both existing and in the
future of the project. A single point of elevator access with views to the
garden and reachable from the valet area is on the western side of the core. A
black granite floor will enhance the white marble wall that exists as well as the
stainless metal paneled ceiling.
The re design of these important towers in our city will provide a level of
finesse and quality that they will be associated with that is in turn suitable
for the investment in the property and the quality of the tenants and rental
return.
10. Beverlywest Condominiums
L o s A n g e l e s , C a l i f o r n i a
Timelessness and dignity are the underlying
concepts to the design of this tower. This city
is one of many images, architectural styles and
periods, so it has been our desire to seek an
architecture design that remains quiet from
the standpoint of form, and achieves its visual
richness through detailing, materials and the
play of light across the texture of the building.
The plan of the building has been derived by
creating two sets of exterior walls with one
pair more solid than the other. The more solid
walls face the nearby buildings and extend
above the roof line to form a strong verticality.
The more open walls are oriented towards the
long views over the club to the city and ocean
beyond. These walls are capped by a cantilever
at the helipad on the roof providing a strong
horizontal cornice to the building seen from
the south and east. By featuring these two
attitudes of composition in counterpoint to
one another, a visual complexity is created from
forms derived from the surrounding context.
This means of designing is not based on
fashion or trends, and tends to provide lasting
values to the investment and the building. The
strong shadow beneath the cornice becomes a
beacon of subtle lighting at night. The texture
on the walls of the building is derived from a
detail in the windows that creates a modern
version of a bay window as the glass wraps
back into a setback on the building façade.
From the interior, this provides a greater view,
and from the exterior the shade and shadow
will animate the facade throughout the day.
The windows vary from this pattern by means
of a curtain wall at certain points which
provides a scale and a variety to the facade.

12. 3161 Michelson
I r v i n e , C a l i f o r n i a
The diffuse and sub urban nature of Orange
County is inexorably becoming more and more
of an urban experience. Centers of education,
air travel, shopping, and recreation have been
emerging from the pastoral beauty of the
former Irvine Ranch in the recent past and will
continue to do so in the future. Centers of work
have been diverse and scattered until now.
Park Place and its new premier office tower
at 3161 Michelson will provide a center like
no other. Located conveniently at the 405
and Jamboree and immediately adjacent to
the open space leading to the single most
important natural amenity, the Back Bay, this
development of the old Fluor Headquarters site
will become what Bunker Hill has become to
downtown Los Angeles, the business address
of note.
2 0 0 7
13. The building lobby, while functional in
providing clear circulation towards the two
elevator banks is also a part of the California
tradition of visually engaging the inside with
outside. A full wall of mullion-less super-clear
glass extends along the western façade of the
lobby. With plant material and paving material
that begin inside and extend through the
glass to the landscape beyond, the impression
will be that of dissolution of enclosure and
a great deal about the beautiful landscape
and weather. To further this concept, a major
painting done in the tradition of the great
“pleinaire”movement of the early 20th century
which was so prevalent in nearby Laguna,
will be featured at the terminus of the lobby.
The architect has also designed three unique
chairs that hold the scale required of a large
lobby, yet provide seating groups within the
rhythm of the planting material. Made of a
semi translucent fabric and free flowing in
character these chairs will provide a sculptural
counterpoint to the otherwise precise
angularity of the space.
14. Lear Corporation
S o u t h f i e l d , M i c h i g a n
Set in a park-like environment of 36 acres, the Lear Corporation
enjoys a new Headquarters office building of 103,000 square feet
as well as a new vision works addition. The Master Plan provides
for multiple other facilities in the future while still maintaining
the park setting. The material of the site wall is a terra-cotta rain-
screen and the primary building materials are coated aluminum
and low-e glass. Facing the street and hovering over the site wall
is a textured glass panel screen. The facades oriented towards
the garden are fully glass to take advantage of the private view.
The lobby features a three-story glass enclosed communicating
stair, and is adjacent to a 300 seat auditorium and a dining facility,
which, in turn, extends outside to the garden. The executive
floor also maintains a strong orientation to the garden with both
a balcony and a tall sky lighted space at the periphery of each
office.
2 0 0 6
15. The design objective for Lear was to integrate an
addition of a new headquarters office building on
newly acquired adjacent land to existing buildings
and facilities. With the new property, the frontage
along Telegraph Road is almost 1000 feet long. A
major site wall was utilized to integrate the new
headquarters at the north with the remodeled
“vision works”building at the south. The character
of the wall while modern in spirit is derived from
the nearby Saarinen site walls at Cranbrook.
Utilizing a terra-cotta masonry applied to a more
modern form, the wall not only unifies the campus,
but also provides security and identity.
16. First American at Solana
W e s t l a k e , T e x a s
To achieve a campus that would be understood as
that of First American’s within the Solana Project,
our proposal is to use the existing architectural
character of the development. Starting with a
separate roadway and entry signage, one comes to
a new wall, not unlike others on the campus that
surrounds the First American parking area. Within
this parking area there is a major entry element at
the bridge leading to the First American cluster of
four buildings. With the lobby extending the full
length of the Building and a completely enclosed
glass link bridge to each of the four buildings at
each level, First American will have over 100,000
square feet of floor space at each level as well as a
natural expansion capability to the other nearby
buildings of the campus.

18. Del Norte Community Wellness Center
C r e s c e n t C i t y , C a l i f o r n i a
2 0 0 3
The site is a wonderful example of indigenous
landscape and all new development will be
carefully considered with regard to grading,
drainage and most importantly, existing trees.
We envisage the buildings set in a natural
landscape and placed in a manner that creates a
central space into which as much light as is possible
will penetrate within our objective of minimizing
tree felling will allow. The visual intrusion of
parking should be minimized.
19. With these broad goals we sought to bring to the
design a reference to the community of Crescent
City. We have used the Health Center and Del Norte
County Department of Health and Social Services
to form a gentle crescent shape with a south facing
orientation to create the main central place –
Crescent Place. To the west, the Family Resource
Center creates an important defining edge to
the space. We have placed the College of the
Redwoods Nursing Lab on the south east corner to
be a convenient walk to the main College campus
but also as a focal point in isolation from the main
complex much as the Battery Point Lighthouse is
isolated from Crescent City – in this case a beacon
representing education.
Crescent Place will provide the ideal setting for
community activities with health care and family as
a focus. Landscaping will be totally indigenous with
natural and formal zones.
Vehicular access would be from either end of the
site direct to drop off zones at the eastern and
western ends of Crescent Place. From the drop
off vehicles would proceed to two main parking
areas to the east and west. A roadway on the south
would connect these parking areas. The north or
Washington Boulevard face would be car-free.
The site plan illustrates our natural approach
to the site, building placement, vehicular and
pedestrian circulation. The character concept
images represent a crisp modern approach to the
design. This would be consistent with maintaining
a tight budget. Materials are proposed to be a mix
of timber and stucco with appropriate glazing.
Verticals are expressed representing the trees with
the strong roof forms introducing a canopy as a
metaphor for the existing tree canopy.
21. This building located in the heart of Sunset
Boulevard is influenced by the Case Study House
Program. Known for open living plans and extensive
glass use, the projects introduced a new type of
living to Los Angeles residents. The project takes
these concepts and applies them to muti-unit living
by emphasizing the connection between interior
and exterior, and focusing on a modern aesthetic.
The design is sensitive to the height restrictions of
the site. By stacking the units on the street, a higher
density is achieved on this highly developed street,
while maintaining a low component in the rear. This
configuration allows more units to take advantage
of the spectacular views that define the Los Angeles
experience.
