The document discusses different perspectives on imagining cities and their futures. It presents two dominant imaginations of the future - one of apocalypse and one of high-tech utopia. Both imaginations view urbanization in a problematic light and see the city as a "project" to be fixed. The document then examines the city of Mumbai and identifies different areas within it. It argues that every condition in a city has multiple possible futures, depending on who is imagining it and how. It provides examples of potential futures for different areas of Mumbai, emphasizing that the future is not predetermined or singular.

Charles Correa was an Indian architect known for his sensitivity to the needs of the urban poor. He developed master plans for cities like Navi Mumbai that focused on decentralization into self-sufficient townships with residential neighborhoods organized by income level. At the micro level, his designs for low-income housing emphasized open-to-sky spaces, courtyards, and terraces to accommodate community needs within a limited footprint. His works show an adaptation of modernism to local culture through vernacular influences like tiled roofs, brick walls, and operable wooden louvers.

The study area saw tremendous growth due to establishment of educational institutes and implementation of development plans after independence.
Charles Correa is an Indian architect known for adapting modernism to non-Western cultures through an emphasis on local vernacular styles, resources, climate and open spaces like courtyards. Some of his notable works discussed include the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya memorial in Ahmedabad using modular units, the high-rise Kanchanjunga Apartments in Mumbai with garden terraces, and low-cost housing projects in India and Peru organized around courtyards for ventilation.
The document summarizes Charles Correa's incremental housing project in CBD Belapur, India. It describes the project's low-cost housing typologies designed around communal courtyards. Housing was organized into clusters of 7-12 pairs of freestanding homes arranged around shared spaces. This allowed residents to independently modify their own homes over time. While many original structures have been replaced, the hierarchy of community spaces remains intact decades later. The project demonstrated high-density affordable housing built at a human scale with simple materials. However, maintaining common spaces and adapting to changing aspirations have presented challenges over time.

The effects of this climate change are described as threats to health, water resources, polar regions, forests and more.
Ecommerce Provides A New Thrust To Shipping IndustryeTailing India
The rise of e-commerce has significantly increased global parcel delivery and led shipping to become a critical factor for online sales. To accommodate more complex shipping needs, parcel software providers have developed hybrid on-premise and cloud-based solutions that integrate with e-commerce platforms and allow for multi-carrier shipping. Automated sorting systems help capture more market share by increasing efficiency, accuracy, speed and reducing costs compared to manual sorting. As e-commerce volumes continue rising, technologies like automated sorting and cloud-based shipping platforms will be important to help businesses optimize operations and deliver good customer experiences.
This document provides an overview and table of contents for a thesis titled "The Gloss on the Mill: A Speculation on Mumbai's Emerging Landscape" by Akshara Verma. The mayor redesigned the city to be more pedestrian-friendly and implemented an innovative bus rapid transit system. It also discusses Curitiba's social programs helping street children and implementing an innovative garbage collection-for-food program with local farmers. The document argues Curitiba provides an example of more sustainable and equitable urban planning compared to typical automobile-focused redevelopment in many cities.
Vision for a World Class Delhi, Jan2009Paromita Roy
What becoming a World Class City could mean for people of Delhi......
A world class Delhi is not about building bigger highways and flyovers, and continually "cleaning" the city's poor out of visibility of the rich.....
Being a World Class City could mean a win-win situation for all the inhabitants and decision makers of the city..... be it rich poor - young old - male female.... making it a truly democratic capital city.
The document discusses the potential impacts of emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, and 3D printing on business models and the economy. It envisions a future with a decentralized "gig economy" where online learning and sharing rather than ownership are common. New platforms and business models like Uber and Airbnb that leverage these technologies have seen explosive growth compared to traditional firms. The future may see more localized economies and self-sufficient communities powered by distributed technologies like microgrids and circular supply chains utilizing recycled materials. Boundary spanners who build diverse networks and challenge assumptions will be key to success in this changing environment.
This document discusses branding and design in a changing world. It provides several case studies on how companies like Wired magazine, IBM, and street gangs have adapted their branding over time. It also examines shifts from centralized to decentralized brand control, and retina-controlled to network-controlled brands. New approaches are needed where branding engages through experiences using signs, visuals, narratives and relationships. Emerging trends include interface design, on-demand products/services, debranding, and peer experiences. The document advocates for decentralized, network-driven branding that tells stories through immersive experiences.
The Sustainable Neighbourhoods in the Digital AgeDavid Rudlin
A presentation given at Ecobuild in March 2014 in the Future Cities Strand. This was part of a seminar entitled The Sustainable Neighbourhoods in the Digital Age that was chaired by Chris Brown of igloo. The aim of the presentation is to explore the potential effect of smart technology on the design of cities drawing on the experience of what happened in previous technological revolutions from the railway to the telephone and the car.

This document discusses several perspectives on why modern science and technology did not emerge in China like they did in Western Europe. It mentions the views of Joseph Needham, Albert Einstein, and analyses differences in the development of geometry and experimentation between Chinese and European thinkers from the 16th-17th centuries. Scholars discussed include Hong Xiuquan, Joseph Needham, Marcel Granet, François Jullien, Jacques Derrida, André Leroi-Gourhan, and Watsuji Tetsuro.
The document appears to contain statistical data from 2004 and various percentages ranging from 6% to 69% alongside dates from 2011 relating to the creation and version history of something, including milestones like reaching over 200,000 of something and the release of versions 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.
This single-word document is about architecture. Architecture is defined as "arkhi tekton", which is Greek for "chief builder" or "master builder". The document provides the Greek origin and definition of the word "architecture" in a very concise manner using only two words and their meaning.

2. Ideas of cities have been dominated by two imaginations:, one of a technological utopia
supported by super infrastructure and a robust information system
3. or the opposite, a city engendered by catastrophes of environment, poverty, and
deterioration.
Inherent in both these imaginations of coherence and catastrophes, is the idea of time as a
singular linear rhythm, of space as an entity with fixed coordinates and of people as
homogenous and inert mass.
4. Both these imaginations have led to the city being imagined as a project – A Mission
Impossible to be undertaken. Government and Civil society alike have taken it upon
themselves to fix the problems of the city. The city is now a mission.

HISTORY OF URBAN HOUSING
(2 years)
Through a compilation of
different types of housing, this
project aims at building a
narrative on different
dimensions of urban housing
in India including a spatial
history, a technological history,
a policy history, a history of
the delivery system and a
cultural history.
The project is conceived in two
parts:
a. History of Housing in
Mumbai
b. History of Urban Housing
in India
ARCHITECTURE AND THE CITY
(2 years)
While the primary aim of this
project is to develop
conceptual frameworks to
understand urban architecture
in India, it aims at compiling a
systematic analysis of urban
form.
REPAIR / RETROFITTING /
IMPROVEMENT (3 years)
This project is conceived with
twin agenda:
a. first, to compile existing
practices of repair /
retrofitting /
improvement; and
b. Second, to develop
techniques on actual
undertaking of repair /
retrofitting /
improvement.
The aim of the project is to fill
the current gap that exists in
architecture and engineering
academia regarding the issue.
