The beach umbrella, the towels, the chairs, and then the cooler. In the backseat, I
watched as my family finished packing the van with the assortment of items we
had brought with us to the beach. The van was the family tank, a roaring piece of

For the Puritans in the early New England colonies life was by no means easy, but
there was the possibility to expand their beliefs free from the persecution from
Church of England. They had the opportunity to create their ideal society under
God with the bible as their law from which they would define how to live. The
Puritans set out to create their model society which could spread and cull the
impurities from the church. But how did these beliefs and goals ultimately effect

In their society the Puritans based their lives, beliefs, and communities on what they
deemed as God s law and true word, the bible (Barger). Reading the bible was
expected for the members of society, this included women and children, which was
often unheard of (Foner 66) at that time. With their lives being restricted to the
word of the bible this left very little leeway for anything other than what was
deemed acceptable, and this rigid way of life was another straw that led to the

name Nora. Nora and Piper had a loving relationship, but in no way normal, as far
as most relationships go. Nora was in a special business that involved smuggling
drugs into the country, and getting paid big bucks to do so without getting caught.
Piper was asked to perform a small task to help out the business, which then lead
her to her future problem. Ten years later Piper was happily engaged to a man
named Larry, they started out as great friend but then advanced to more. In 1998 it
was to her surprise that two officers by the names of Maloney and Wong, came to
her house in New York to deliver the news that she d been indicted in federal court of

Feelings of Neglect
Neglect by R.T Smith explains the feelings of neglect by using imagery, metaphor,
and connotation. This poem talks about a path of neglect that a man followed that
led to the destruction of his red apple tree. The narrator put too much of his time
and attention on his other marvels to not put it into the apple tree as well.
Therefore his red apple tree, though thought to be inevitable, died and filled the
narrator with regret. A regret that appears to haunt the author, and fills him with
sorrow. One of the literacy devices used in Neglect is imagery. Towards the

A second example of a metaphor is found when the author writes, Smoke is all, ... ,
/ I ve been given to remember (21 22). This is an example of a metaphor because it
is comparing the smoke to death and how he was too blinded by the other
blessings he had received, and now regrets it. It connects with the meaning of the
poem because it shows how if something is neglected too much, it will eventually
disappear and come back to haunt the neglecter, and the only memories that will be
left to remember it by is the smoke that it leaves behind. The third literacy device
that was found throughout the poem is connotation, which the author uses
frequently in the poem. The first quote is, Is the scent of apple boughs smoking in
the woodstove what I will remember... (1 4). The word smoke in this poem is a
connotation because it carries a meaning of sadness and death. In every quote the
author has it in it brings a feeling of sadness and how he was too blind to see that
death was on the verge for his loved apple tree. It connects with the poem with its
ability to change the mood from what seemed to be the author becoming happier,
back to the depressing tone that was throughout the poem. It kept reminding the
reader of the fateful death that the tree went through and the author s sadness. The
