Geoffrey Chaucer s Influence On The 19th Century
Geoffrey Chaucer was one of the most acclaimed writers of the 14th century. It was
not exactly certain when Geoffrey Chaucer was, born but it was known to be
around 1340 to 1344. He was the son of John Chaucer and Agnes Copton. John
Chaucer was a very successful London wine merchant, but soon died in 1366. His
wife Agnes got remarried to another Chaucer, said to be a cousin of her late
husband John. Just where the boy got his schooling is not known; he may have
been at either Oxford or Cambridge, or neither. (Kunitz Haycraft 98). Not much was
known about his early life, but through his various pieces of work we can conclude
that he was able fluently read French, Latin, and Italian. Although there was proof
that Chaucer could read and write before he went to school
(historylearningsite.co.uk). He was taught by one of his father s clerks who
enlarged his income by teaching as one of his side jobs. His family home was
known to be in the area of St. Martin, on Thames Street. John Chaucer was raised
up in a well to do family environment, the family not being too rich or too poor.
Most of the work positions that John had were all made possible through the
various connections his father had. Chaucer was taken prisoner in 1359 after
joining the English army s invasion of France which was all taken place during the
Hundred Years War, his ransom was paid on the first day of March in 1360 by King
Edward. In 1366 many assumed that Chaucer was an administrator for Prince

A) What is the possible meaning of the changes in stock price for GEICO and
Berkshire Hathaway on the day of the acquisition announcement?
Specifically, what does the $718 million gain in Berkshire s market value of equity
imply about the intrinsic value of GEICO?
Valuation of GEICO

In August up to the announcement, the Berkshire Hathaway had been closing at an
average of $24,753. This shows that the announcement had a direct impact of the
stock price.
The reason for the increase in the stock price in Berkshire Hathaway was
dependant on several factors. With the GEICO stock rising with $12.875 to $68.625
on the New York Stock Exchange, Geico Hathaway gained approximately $440
million on their 34.25 million shares in GEICO. With the gain from the upcoming
deal with Walt Disney Company, as well as the publication of the Value Line
Forecast for GEICO, it is understandable that the Berkshire Hathaway stock rose.
Another factor that also comes into play in this case is the famous track record of
Warren Buffett when it comes to investing.
Conclusion: The increase in Berkshire Hathaway was a response from the markets
valuation of GEICO Company to increase, the reinvestments of the money that would
be gained on the future sales of Capital Cities/ABC, as well as the markets trust in
Warren Buffett s investments to be successful.
B) How well has Berkshire Hathaway performed? In the aggregate? In its investment
in Scott amp; Fetzer? In its investments in earlier purchases of GEICO stock? In its
investments in convertible preferred securities?
Berkshire Hathaway has a very good proven track record, due to the investments in

An Essay About Michelangelo
Michelangelo was born in March, 1475 in Caprese. He was an Italian painter,
sculptor, architect, and poet. He is one of the biggest contributors to the
development of Western art today. He was also called the divine one and The
Renaissance Man . Michelangelo s ancestors before that were small time bankers.
The bank that his family was working with failed and his father had to get a
temporary governmental job. A couple of months after Michelangelowas born, his
family moved back to Florence, Italy. His mother was ill for a long time and died in
1481 when Michelangelo was just six. He then went to go live his nanny and her
husband who was a stonecutter in Settignano. Michelangelo began to admire marble
in Settignano because his father owned a marble quarry there. Michelangelo was later
sent to study grammar with Francesco da Urbino who was a Humanist.... Show more

When the year 1505 hit, Michelangelo was then invited by the newly invited pope,
Julius II back to Rome. When he arrived he was commissioned to build the tomb of
the Pope, this tomb had forty statues and was planned to be finished in five years.
While working on this huge tomb Michelangelo was constantly distracted by other
tasks. This caused Michelangelo to go from finishing it in five years to him taking a
whole forty years. Michelangelo was never satisfied with it though, and he never did
get to finish it to his full satisfaction. The tomb is mostly known for its statue of
Moses which was completed in 1516.
Around the same time Michelangelo also painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel,
this one took four years to complete and started in 1508 to be finished in 1512. Now
a man named Bramante hated the fact that the Pope Julius commissioned
Michelangelo and manipulated the Pope to make Michelangelo create the tomb in a
medium that he was not good with so that Michelangelo did a bad job with the
Long Hair Should Be Allowed In The Laboratory
In the laboratory, all students, as well as laboratory instructors, are required to
follow a specific and serious list of instructions in order to ensure the safety of
themselves and their classmates. Students are expected to wear the appropriate attire
at all times. This includes but is not limited to long pants, closed toed shoes, such as
boots or tennis shoes, and safetygoggles with a fully sealed rim. These measures are
not to be taken lightly otherwise a student may be harmed by a chemical burn if a
spill were to happen. Students with long hair are also responsible for tying back their
hair so it doesn t accidentally burn from the experimental substances. Gloves are to be
worn whenever the instructor tells the students they are required.

Comparing Robert Frost s Out Out and Seamus Heany s Mid Term Break
Works Cited Missing
The subject of both poems is the untimely death of young people in tragic accidents
rather than sickness. Strangely both boys are killed by machinery, the boy in Out,
Out by a mechanical saw and the boy in Mid Term Break by a car. Both poems
describe the reactions of the families to the deaths each of the families reacting quite
differently. Both poems talk about the deaths of young boys who have older or
younger siblings; one has at least one sister, while the other has an elder brother and
a younger sibling.
Mid Term Break is written in the first person and is a far more personal poem

Both titles are highly symbolic. In my opinion Out, Out has the most intriguing title,
being an extract taken from Macbeth . In the play the line reads Out, out brief
candle and the line is said by Macbeth upon hearing of his wife s death. The candle, a
symbol of life and its fragility, relates to the sudden death of the young boy.
Candles make an appearance in Mid Term Break too when candles soothed the
bedside of the body of the dead child. The title Mid Term Break is a misleading
one, suggesting fun and holidays and a break from school. In reality, the term
referred to in the title symbolises life, with term s end meaning death. The break
(the boy s death) was before the term s end and therefore an untimely death before
the boy has matured and is ready to die.
The settings of both poems are quite different; the poet, Robert Frost, is an
American writer and chooses to set his poem in his native country. Out, Out
provides the reader with an image of picturesque mountain ranges, five mountain
ranges one behind the other , and an idyllic rural setting under sunset far into
Vermont and is clearly set in North America. The saw mills and heavily wooded
areas, the sawing work the boy is doing all hints at an isolated, rural existence. The
close family appears to be working together at
Essay On The Perfect Pearl
The Perfect Pearl
The Pearl in Steinbeck s story of the same symbolizes the corrupting power of
materialism which recently destroys everything worthwhile in Kino s life. In this
book, it takes place in a little town in Mexico called La Paz. This book begins with a
description of the loving family s life of Kino and his wife Juana and there infant son
Coyotito.
One early morning on coast of Mexico, Kinos family was getting ready for
breakfast. When Kino went to check on Coyotito, he loves how sweet his baby boy
looks when he sleeps, but as he began to get closer he was shocked with fear! There
was a scorpion crawling down the splintery wooden rope that held the baby s cradle.
Then a million thought went through Kinos head and he sprung ... Show more content

This was very odd but that s what happens when you have money, people want to
know you so you give them money because your friends. But the worst part is that
they will now be able to make there son s life not just okay but great. This shows that
money changes people, just like drugs do now. When you become wealthy your mind
thinks money, money, money where is the time for family and fun?Kino s neighbors
wonder what they would do if they had found the pearl, and suggest giving it as a
present to the Pope, buying Masses for the souls of his family, and distributing it
among the poor of La Paz. Kino goes to sell his pearl, accompanied by his
neighbors, but the pearl dealer only offers a thousand pesos when Kino believes
that he deserves fifty thousand. Although other dealers inspect the pearl and give
similar prices, Kino refuses their offer and decides to go to the capital to sell it
there. That night, Kino is attacked by more thieves, and Juana once again reminds
Kino that the pearl is evil. However, Kino vows that he will not be cheated, for he is
a man.
Later that night, Juana attempts to take the pearl and throw it into the ocean, but
Kino finds her and beats her for doing so. While outside, a group of men accost
Kino and knock the pearl from his hand. Juana watches from a distance, and sees
Kino approach her, limping with another man whose throat Kino has slit. Juana finds
the pearl, and they decide that they must go away even if the murder was in self
defense.
The Sweetheart Of Song Tra Bong Character Analysis
Even though we may not realize it, the environments we live in have a big effect on
our personality and character. People are reflections of the interactions they make
with the people and institutions surrounding them, and when this is changed the
people themselves change too. This is prevalent in both The Lord of The Flies by
William Goldberg and The Sweetheart of Song Tra Bong by Tim O brien, as both
stories cause the characters introduced in their isolated settings to adapt in a way that
reflect their new surroundings. These characters start out as normal individuals, but
as time passes, they accustom themselves to the new circumstances they face. As
demonstrated by Mary Anne from The Sweetheart of Song Tra Bong and Jack from
The Lord of the Flies a severe change in environment results in an extreme, yet
gradual change in character, and goals which are marked by symbols used... Show

blonde and blue eyed American girl, with a bubbly personality and a sense of
curiosity. At this point she hasn t been exposed to the current state of Vietnam,
and all she knows is her home, the United States. Her personality and goals reflect
the environment she has been living in for the majority of her life and the
interactions she has with others. This is similar to how Jack is near the beginning
of The Lord Of the Flies as he is depicted as a chapter chorister and head boy. Jack
is shown to be a character who is a arrogant and authoritative, yet innocent and
civilized. He has a mutual respect for Ralph who is also another born leader , who
have a common understanding of what needs to be done on the island to ensure a
working society: a rescue fire and hunting. These images of both Mary Anne and Jack

The Psychology Behind the Serial Killer Essay
The Psychology Behind the Serial Killer Creeping around the shadowy house, the
predator found its prey waking to strange sounds. The victim lay facedown, with a
sweating forehead pressed fearfully into the pillow, silently praying the noises
would just go away. Suddenly the victim found himself straddled and pinned to the
bed. He was unable to scream for help due to the pressure of the handle of a pick
axe against his throat, preventing any breath from escaping, much less any sound.
The victim struggled beneath the weight of the assailant. The scant light from the

room, projecting an image that looked oddly like that of a cowboy saddled upon...

Definition: What What is a serial killer? Retired Special Agent Robert Ressler, a
twenty two year veteran of the FBI s Behavioral Sciences Unit in Quantico,
Virginia, is responsible for creating the term serial killer. He defines this person as
one who commits a series of murders, usually three or more, the victims most often
being strangers, and usually with a cooling off period in between each kill
(Kelleher Kelleher, 1998; Pearson, 1998; Ressler and Shactman, 1997). This
precise definition is necessary to distinguish this type of predator from the mass
murderer (who kills many simultaneously), mercenaries, war criminals, or mafia hit
men. Profiling: Who and How Though serial killer may have a fairly specific
definition, there is no single precise profile for the serial killer. Each has a unique
identity, set of motives and methods, and a unique psychopathology that would
attempt to explain the mens rea, that is, the purpose or intent of the murder.
Psychological profiling is an investigative tool used strictly to answer the how of
the crime, not the why (Severence et al, 1992; Lanier and Henry, 1998). By
examining the psychological make up of the serial killer, it is often possible to
explain the behavior, which might make it a useful tool in solving crimes. Theories

The Gospels Of Christian Beliefs In The Gospel Of John
The Gospel of John reflects a Christian tradition that is different from that of the other
gospels. Many individuals and groups within the early Christian movement rejected it
as heresy. However, it was ultimately accepted into the official canon, over many
objections. It is now the favorite gospel of many conservative Christians, and the
gospelleast referred to by many liberal Christians. The Gospel of Johnis noticeably
different from the other three Gospels in content, and the structure of the content.
The first chapter of John is very similar to the beginning of the Book of Genesis,
where it talks about the beginning of the world and creation. Another difference
between the Gospel of John and the other Synoptics is the lack of a certain miracle
Jesusperformed found in the book. Unlike the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, and Luke,
John has no record of Jesus performing exorcisms. While John does talk about
healing the sick and blind, nowhere in the Gospel do we find Jesus exorcising
demons. One of the main talking points within the Gospels is the ministry of Jesus.
From what we can determine, upon reading the four Gospels, we can see that of the
four, John tells us Jesus ministry lasted longer than a year. According to John, the
span of Jesus ministry lasted three years instead of one year (as depicted by the other
three Synoptics).
Unlike Matthew, Mark, and Luke, John primarily emphasized Jesus divinity instead
of humanity. A verse that supports John s focus of divinity
Mommy Makeover Essay
A mommy makeover is a plastic surgery trend that helps to reverse the effect
pregnancy has on your body. After one pregnancy, some women naturally return to
their pre pregnancy figure, but many women don t especially after two or three
children. Breasts begin to lose volume and sag, the abdomen that is stretched during
pregnancybecomes loose and doesn t tighten even after rigorous exercise. Some fat
deposits are also very difficult to get rid of even with strict dieting and exercise. The
remedy for all of the above is a mommy makeover.
There are five main treatments included in a typical mommy makeover, including an
abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, breast enhancement or augmentation, liposuction to
remove fat, skin tightening and cellulite removal. During your consultation with our
specialist, you can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A tummy tuck tightens the muscles in your abdomen and removes excess skin.
There are several levels of tummy tuck, including a full abdominoplasty, a belt
lipectomy, a small incision abdominoplasty and a reverse abdominoplasty. Our
specialist will help you choose the one that will give you the best results.
Breast augmentation may be a breast lift or breast implants. For some women, a
breast lift is all it takes to restore their breasts to their original position. It involves
raising the breast and repositioning the nipple. For other women, breast implants are
the best way to restore volume and make the breasts look younger and fuller.
Implants may be recommended to restore the original size and firmness or to make
the breasts a little larger than they were before pregnancy.
Liposuction can remove fat, but it does not treat loose or stretched skin that may be
left behind after the fat is removed. This is the main reason liposuction is typically
used along with a tummy tuck. The combination of these procedures is the most
effective way to make the abdomen and waist line tight and
The Malthusian Population Theory
Introduction In 1798, Thomas Malthus wrote an essay about population growth that
reflects a pessimistic view to future economic development. This essay was a result
of his discussion with positivists that tend to praise perfectibility of the man and
knowledge diffusion as a source of prosperity for future generations. Malthus essay
about populationgrowth based on observing 17th and 18th century US population
data. The general idea of the essay that when food is enough, population grows at a
geometric rate and food production just arithmetically. (Malthusian and Neo
Malthusian Theories/ Ran Abramitzky and Fabio Braggion, 2003) Essay, An Essay
on the Principle of Population, is an excellent example of mathematical modeling.
The Malthus model was a surprisingly good for prediction of population growthover
short time intervals, but as it was discovered later, it does not work for long time
intervals.
This paper has the following structure: the first chapter Model description contains
general assumptions that were made for the model. In the chapter, Model
Composition the formula of the Malthusian population growth model introduced and
the production function will be defined. In the third chapter, the Low of Diminish

On one hand, the model conflicts with the fact that in modern economics, per capita
incomes exhibit a tendency to growth over time. On the other hand its prediction
regarding the relationship between population growth and per capita income no

general role in the society development. Nonetheless, as it was shown in the chapter
Empirical Support for the Malthusian Theory it is quite precisely describes tendencies
that characterized dynamics in humans population growth before the industrial
revolution and it still works for short term

Labeling theory is also to deterministic; it says that once you re negatively labeled
that s it, you ll fail this isn t always the case. Some sociologist may argue that even
though working class students are often labeled and streamed into low achieving
section, they are far from discouraging students, it often makes students more likely
to want to work hard to prove their teachers wrong. This was proved in research in
which black young girls were streamed into lower ability classes, and were then
determined to do better than they would have if they were labeled as high achievers.
Negative labelling and putting students into different streams or bands can cause
some pupils to rebel against school values. As a response to negative labelling and
frustration with low status, pupils may form antmaxine hingstoni school subcultures
or vice versa and create a pro school subculture.
Hargreaves said there were two distinctive subcultures emerged within the school;
conformist and non conformist delinquents. Hargreaves found that those in bottom
setting and streaming groups were more maxine hingstonlikely to be non conformist.
Woods responded by saying that there are lots of different reactions to school, but
non conformist reactions were more likely to come from working class student.

The Popularity Of Malaysian Architecture
For many centuries, Malay houses were almost exclusively built using wood.
Though these intricately designed wooden houses are disappearing fast, quite a few
of the kampung residences still bear its proof. Many of the stilt houses of the country
are still built using tree trunks and rattan as well.
Malaysia has an abundance of premium quality teak which partly explains its
preference for wooden homes. Even such regal structures as Malacca Sultanate Palace
were built using high quality wood.
Advantages and disadvantages of using timber
There are some very good reasons for such widespread popularity of timber. Properly
seasoned high quality timber can be extremely durable. It is highly conducive for
modular structures, which is another reason of its popularity in Malaysian
architecture. Most the earliest buildings of the country used to be highly modular in
nature and sometimes no nails were used in the construction process.
It has great insulating capabilities. Wooden houses remain cool in the summer
months and comfortably warm in the winter. It is a sustainable construction material
and as suited for the classical structures as the contemporary ones. It also boasts of
an exceptional versatility. No other material can be so successfully utilised for
forming the basic structure of any residence as well as designing highly detailed
furniture and decorative features.

The Republic Of Rwand A Nation Of Middle East Africa
The Republic of Rwanda is a sovereign nation in Middle East Africa that is filled
with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Kingship in Rwanda started
well before Germany s colonization in 1897. The indigenous state was governed
through a central monarchy, and relied heavily on the kings predecessors of one of
the three royal dynasties and spiritual protection from havoc and misfortune. The
king, also, ruled alongside the Queen Mother , who served an important role in
carrying out executive orders. The kings descendants were referred to as Tutsi; and
people of non royal descent were called Hutu. Rwandan rulers carried out multiple

German, Belgian, and French colonialists along with Christian missionaries
orchestrated and perpetrated both the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 and the Rwandan
Revolution of 1959. The church was thriving and working alongside the state,
promoting tribalism and ethnic distinction. The Hamitic hypothesis was the states
and church s ideology about Rwanda s history at the time, but many people until this
day blame the church for not offering moral and spiritual support. Christian
missionaries, especially the Roman Catholic Church, were the brain and hands of the
colonial state. The church was involved politically, socially, and economically and
situated themselves deep within the backbone of the country. It was not until 1900
when the first mission arrived and settled in Rwanda. The mission was established by
the Society of Our Lady of Africa, commonly known as the White Fathers. Monsignor
Lavigerie, the founder of the order, promoted the idea that to implant Christianity
successfully in a society, missionaries should focus their efforts at conversion first
and foremost on political authorities. If chiefs and kings could be convinced to adopt
Christianity, Lavigerie argued, their subjects would naturally follow (Longman 7).
Although this may be true, Yuhi Musinga, refused to be baptized a Roman Catholic.

Mesopotamia Changes
Mesopotamia is one of the oldest places where civilizations blossomed. In Greek,
the word mesopotamia means the land between the rivers (Leick, 2003, p. xii) .
Mesopotamia was located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now
known as modern day Iraq. This land was home to many civilizations dating as far
back as 10,000 B.C. (Leick, 2003). Each civilization used the different type of
resources available to them between the two rivers. In the beginning, civilizations
relied mostly on hunting and gathering near the Levantine Coast (Leick, 2003).
However, there was a change from hunting and gathering to cultivating and
domesticating animals. According to Van De Mieroop, the transition was not sudden
but rather a slow process
The Invent Of The Cotton Gin By Eli Whitney
slavery and the plantation During the era of slavery in the United States, not all
blacks were slaves. There were a many number of free blacks, consisting of those
had been freed or those in fact that were never slave. Nor did all slave work on
plantations. There were nearly five hundred thousand that worked in the cities as
domestic, skilled artisans and factory hands (Green, 13). But they were exceptions to
the general rule. Most blacks in America were slaveson plantation sized unitsin the
seven states of the South. And with the invent of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney, more
slaves were needed to work the ever growing cotton game (Frazier, 14). The size of

In most cases, however, slaves were expected to cook the evening meal in their
cabins. The food, which was issued once a week, was generally coarse and lacking
in variety. The usual allocation was a peck of corn and three of four pounds of
bacon or salt pork. They were also given milk, potatoes, peas and beans, molasses,
and fish. Fractional amounts, usually one half, were allotted to each child in the
family. Most slaves supplemented this meager fare by trapping coons and
opossums in the fields or by stealing corn from the master s corncribs and chickens
from his chicken coops. Slaves made a distinction between taking and stealing. It
was considered right to take anything that belonged to white folk but it was wrong to
steal the property of other slaves (Olmsted 69 72).
While the diet provided to the slave kept them alive and functioning, it lacked many
important nutrients, and diet related diseases plagued slave communities. The
diseases and other inflictions that befell slave include hernia, pneumonia, and
lockjaw. Because of the lack of proper sanitation, slaves also suffered from dysentery
and cholera more severely than the whites (Berkin, 266 267).
Twice a year the slave was issued a clothes ration. A South Carolina planter
described a typical allowance in his plantation manual: Each man gets in the fall two

have the highest college graduation rate. In Michelle Obama s speech, Remarks by
the First Lady at Education Event with DC High School Sophomores, she speaks to
students at Bell High school. These high school sophomores come from many
different social and economics backgrounds. Many of these students do not live
privileged lives and cannot afford higher education. Obama discusses the importance
of college education and how students should prepare for it during high school, even
with limited resources. She tells the students her own personal experiences as well as
inspiring and calling them to pursue a higher education. Michelle Obama s speech
appeals to the student s hopes and dreams for the future, exhorting them to set
themselves up for success. The use of parallelism, a rhetorical device in which the
writer repeats the same sentence structure or part of speech, in Michelle Obama s
speech makes every student feel like they can relate to what Obama is saying as
well as understand where others come from. One example of parallelism is seen
when Obama talks about student s possible backgrounds. Maybe you ve had
problems at home ... Maybe you ve come from a tough neighborhood ... Maybe one
of your parents has lost a job and you ve had to struggle just to make it here today
(Obama). She repeats the sentence structure of maybe .... you ve ..., giving her
speech a rhythmic flow to link her ideas and
Wernher Von Braun Accomplishments
Wernher Von Braun was born in March 23, 1912 in Wirsitz, Prussia, Germany.
Today, he is known as the aerospace engineer behind many of NASA s rocket
designs, including, most notably, the Saturn V rockets that took astronauts to the
Moon. However, as a child, his interests varied and he had changing career
ambitions. Though he was always interested in astronomy and rocketry, he did not
perform well in his math and science classes. However, after acquiring an aerospace
engineering and astronomy book, he began to take his studies more seriously.
Initially, Von Braun designed military rockets for the Nazi s, the most infamous of
which was the V 2 rocket. While there is some uncertainty as to whether or not he
believed in Nazi ideology, he worked... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He and his colleagues got academics, civilian engineers, and military engineers up
to speed on how to design rockets and guidance systems. They also performed tests
on V 2 rockets that the US military captured during the war. Von Braun led the effort
in making making the Redstone rocket, which was utilized as a missile platform for
the US military s first ballistic nuclear missile. Later, he modified his initial Redstone
rocket design to make the Jupiter C rocket, which propelled the United States
Explorer 1 satellite to space. During this time, he created very detailed plans for
different space missions. Specifically, he designed a mission to put a space station
that generated artificial gravity into orbit that would serve a platform for astronauts
to then be sent to the Moon. He also had detailed plans on making a lunar base
where astronauts could use the base as another launch point to other places in the
solar system and to perform scientific experiments on the Moon s low gravity
environment. He even had plans to send astronauts to Mars using his space station as
a launchpad, which was something that no one at the time was talking about or even
considering. In fact, he was the first person to perform a detailed analysis of traveling
to Mars. Although he had designed these missions with great detail and accounting
for much of the logistics of these missions, the US military was not interested in them
since they did not believe it was necessary to focus on such things at that time.
However, when the Russians sent the Sputnik satellite into space, the United States
created NASA in 1958 in order to compete with the Russians with the aim of beating
them in the space race. When the Marshall Space Flight Center was opened, Wernher
Von Braunbecame the director of the facility. There he further worked on different
rocket designs which included the Saturn V rocket. The Saturn V
Golden Dart Frog Lab Report
Golden Dart Frogs and Sexual Conditioning Experiment The bright and welcoming
golden yellow colored skin of the Phyllobates terribilis should not be mistaken.
Secreted with a vicious poison, the golden yellow color does not reflect sunshine
rays or happiness but rather a crucial survival skill of these golden dart frogs. A
vacation to the Amazonian rainforest should be done in caution, avoiding these
brightly colored frogs. Because this speciesof frogs has become endangered, an
experiment involving sexual conditioning was conducted to increase the reproduction
rate of these frogs (Gaalema 5). The experiment involved pairs of the dart frogs and
two experimental groups and a control group (Gaalema 5). The two experimental
groups were exposed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gaalema performed the experiment Sexual Conditioning in the Dyeing Poison Dart
Frog to increase the rate of reproduction among these endangered frogs. 38 dart
frogs including 19 males and 19 females were put into pairs and separated into
three different groups (Gaalema 8). The three groups included a control group that
received no conditioning, an experimental group that received an active control
conditioning, and another experimental group that received experimental
conditioning (Gaalema 8). In the experimental condition, a green LED light would
flash for approximately 90 second intervals followed by a 120 second interval of
interaction between the opposite sex paired frogs (Gaalema 9). The LED lights
were used as a conditional stimulus and the presentation of the opposite sex frog
was used as an unconditional stimulus (Gaalema 9). The active control group was
not consistently exposed to the green LED light and the opposite sex frogs, as was
the experimental group (Gaalema 9). The frogs were being trained to see the
unconditional stimulus and then know that it is time to breed upon arrival of the
opposite sex frog (Gaalema 9). After the training period, the experimenter did
testing trials to see if the frogs had been conditioned to the stimuli (Gaalema 9). The
training period consisted of both the experimental groups receiving the green LED
light (conditional stimulus) for 90 seconds followed by presentation of opposite sex
frogs that remained for five days instead of 120 seconds (Gaalema 9). The control
group testing was identical to that of the experimental groups but no flashing green
LED lights were used in the control group (no conditional stimulus) (Gaalema 9).
Throughout the testing time period, the frogs tank was checked for the production of
eggs twice a day (Gaalema
Rhetorical Devices In Fearless Of Taylor Swift
As the result declares Rhetorical as the top most used figure of speech, it can be
inferred that the album Fearless of Taylor Swift, mainly indicates lyrics that are in
a question form. Proof to this are lyrics found on You Belong With Me Song which
is a part of the Album stating Can t you see that I m the one who understands you?
and Why can t you see you belong with me? . The album also indicated lyrics that
are to represent something which is not directly stated and these are based on the
result that Metonymy had garnered the most used type of figurative language. An
example to this is a line found from the song You re Not Sorry which states This is
the last straw . In modern time s straw is used to connect things like when we can t
reach the soda inside its bottle. But in this case, Metonymy of figurative language
is applied as it is used to represent chance or to be direct this is the last chance .
Meanwhile, it has also been discovered that a series of lines falls under
understatement. Evidence to this is a line from the song White Horsewhich states You
had to fight to have the upper hand .... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Masstige Brand Positioning
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this study is to verify the positioning of the new luxury brands in
relation to traditional luxury brands and middle range brands, and to draw
implications for both academics and practitioners. In other words, to show that in
terms of perceived prestige new luxury brands are substantially closer to traditional
prestige brands than middle range brands. In terms of price, however, they are
substantially closer to middle range brands than traditional luxury brands.
INTRODUCTION:
A masstige positioning strategy is viewed as very innovative and effective because it
combines a successful prestige positioning with a broad appeal but with little or no ...

In the case of Pond s, the attempt is to elevate the ubiquitous brand from talc and
powder to a premium skin care brand.
Thus, Pond s is being positioned across platforms such as anti ageing, skin
lightening lotion and also day cream, with a slight premium on price. The price
points range from Rs 50 to Rs 650. It s expensive yet not unaffordable. Suddenly,
from a simple cold cream, Pond s is on a range of platforms reaching the target
audience across different formats. We want Pond s to be the face care expert and
we can t do that if we are at the bottom of the pile, Paranjpe explains. Similarly,
Lakme was always considered a premium brand and in the last 12 months, efforts are
on to significantly upgrade the way it is perceived by the masstige audience.
Nowhere is the phenomenon more visible than in consumer durables and mobile
handsets. Masstige is a differentiated strategy across various product lines, explains
Ravinder Zutshi, deputy MD, and Samsung India. Zutshi s betting big on the LCD
market which will show exponential growth in time to come. He estimates the
market to be around 150,000 units this year, which will jump to 400,000 units by
2007. This is in line with the global market, which has risen to 40 million units this
year, from 20 million last year, he says.

ADHD In Childhood
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder has a complicated and interesting history
and because of that it is important to understands this disorders implications and
comorbidity to better treat and diagnose it. Research done by the Centers of
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that 11% of the US population
between the ages of 4 17 are affected with ADHD; that s 6.4 million children and
the prevalence of diagnosis is only increasing (2016). It was generally assumed that
ADHD was something children would grow out of but new studies show that
approximately 4% of the adult population in the US are still suffering from ADHD
or have developed ADHD (Breyer, J. L., Lee, S., Winters, K. C., August, G. J.,

In a study published by Hung Pollock and Karalunas, they created an experiment
that tested children with and without ADHD s working memory (WM) to better
understand how their executive functioning (EF) developed (2010). In order for an
individual to use and learn an executive function, that individual must first use WM
to remember and practice that function until it becomes automatic. Hung Pollock
and Karalunas used two types of test to measure reaction time (RT) and apply that
data to WM. The first test was alphabet arithmetic (AA), a computer program that
would present a question with a number and a letter (i.e A+1=?) (Hung Pollock C.
L., Karalunas S. L. 2010). Children were expected to replace the letter with the
number associated with its position in the alphabet (i.e. A=1, B=2, C=3) and solve.
The children were told to press that enter button with would record their RT and then
say their answer aloud to the research assistant who then recorded answers (Hung
Pollock C. L., Karalunas S. L. 2010). The second test, called finger math (FM), was
another computer program that presented children with the same math problems as
the AA (Hung Pollock C. L., Karalunas S. L.
Moms Reports
Hello Students and Moms,
I have a few things I d like to chat about this morning. Make sure to read through
everything, please.
NOVELS
It s very important each student bring a hard copy of the novel we re discussing to
class. Students should be marking vocabulary, literary techniques, etc. right in the
book as they re reading through it, and be prepared to share. Students are not
permitted to use their phones as their text during class.
PROGRESS REPORTS
Next week, 10/18, I will issue an informal report to students highlighting
assignments they are missing, and noting grades they ve received for assignments.
They will have until 11/1 to submit all missing assignments from Les 1 6. On 11/18
I will issue an official progress report. Moms, please review these reports with your
students.

The Woods Essay
Jack was steaming mad. He had just had yet another fight with his mom about
wasting food and was heading to the old tree house in the woods. They were
always fighting about wasting food. He saw where she was coming from. They
were pretty tight on cash, but if she was so intent on not wasting food why didn t she
eat it. He was sitting at the footof the abandoned tree house, drawing a dragon in the
sand, when he suddenly felt the overwhelming need to go deeper into the woods.
He knew he shouldn t go. There were dangerous animals like wolves and bears in
the woods, but he had to. Some hidden force was calling to him. He had to go
regardless of the dangers. The force was too strong. Resistance was futile. He got up
and went. He went deeper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He went to cross the rotting rope bridge. As soon as he got to the middle the bridge
fell. Jack was plunged into the ice cold water and pulled downstream.
He struggled to get out of the water but the current was too strong. He sensed an
upcoming waterfall and used the last of his strength but it was not enough to pull
himself out of the stream. He flew over the water fall and passed out. He had no
idea how long he was out but when he woke up it was daytime and he was on dry
land. It looked as if someone or something had dragged him out of the water. Then
he realized that he was in a completely different world than before. There were little
fairies flying around his head. He wondered where he was for a while just laying
there. Then he realized he must be dreaming. In a little while he would wake up in
his own bed, but if he was dreaming then why did he hurt so much. Some of the little
fairies had grouped around his head.
He tried to wave them away and one of them bit him. A searing pain went all the
way through his left arm from his finger tips to his shoulder. He decided it was
definitely not a dream. The fairies helped him up and told him to go and defeat the
beast. He asked them what beast but they would not tell him. He left fearing if he
stayed too long they would bite him again. His left arm was already half paralyzed
and swelling up. He got out of the meadow and was standing up agenst a tree looking
at the bite. Then an arrow went into the tree right above
The Role Of Suicides In The Virgin Suicides
The concepts of honour and loyalty appear to be intrinsically linked, packaged
together under the overarching category of general chivalry. However, a closer
look through the lens of Jeffrey Eugenides novel The Virgin Suicides reveals this
to be a misconception. One can exist without the other. In fact, none of the Lisbon
girls peers display both. Interactions with other girls are almost nonexistent within
the novel, and while the neighbourhood boys may be loyal, they are not
honourable. Furthermore, Trip Fontaine, who stands apart from the collective
conscience of the other boys, can be considered the opposite. By examining this
juxtaposition of vastly different approaches to interacting with the Lisbon girls,
the falsity of both methods can be revealed. Understanding this, further insight into
the four older girls enigmatic motivation for their suicides can be gained. To begin,
it is necessary to establish how the boys and Trip are able to act in a way which
affects the girls so severely. Maslow, a pioneer of humanistic psychology, argues
that one must satisfy their physical and emotional needs in a particular order, and
only those who reach the fifth and final tier will be ultimately happy (382). Dubbed
the love needs , the third tier can only be satisfied by the creation of strong friendly
or romantic bonds with others. Because the girls have been rejected by their own
community after their sister s suicide, and their own parents have shut the house in
Sexism As A Scientist Or Engineer
In the long history of sexism in science, technology, engineer and mathematics
(STEM), women have been discrimination of being unfit or not apprehensiveness
enough for being a scientist or engineer by men who have high doubtful on women or
mocking women working as an engineer that they would destroy something.
Determining or judging the action of the genderin different position and the thinking
of discrimination from the superior race or gender to the lesser is what it called sexism
. Sexism is most common in science and engineer especially women is the most
affected.
In my desired job position in the world of Biotechnology, I have an inferior
knowledge in my brain about women in the lab. In the past of my experiences with
my brother, I went to visit his college called California State University, Fresno or
Fresno State for short. I used my experience in this essay because it is related to
my job position and the case that I will explain henceforth in this essay. I entered
Fresno State to explore several buildings on campus. The first building I went into
is College of Science and Mathematics. As you see, I love to learn about
microorganisms, so I went to see the lab. As I peeked in the lab, I noticed
something that seems not right. I don t see any women in the lab, just men. I asked
someone in the lab why is there no women in the lab. That person told me those
women is not good enough to be scientist. Did I just hear sexism from his voice?
That is when I realized I
The Lightning Thief Percy Jackson Quotes
The Lightning Thief is a fictional book that is in the point of view of the
protagonist, Percy Jackson. In the beginning of the book, Percy discovers that he
is a half blood, a half human half God. After an encounter with a Minotaur and his
mother mysteriously disappearing, Percy is sent to Camp Half Blood. At Camp
Half Blood, Percy meets many kids just like him. Percy also discovers many more
things about himself. For instance, he finds out that his father is Poseidon, and that
his best friend Grover is a satyr. He also finds out that his father Poseidon is accused
of stealing his brother Zeus s master bolt, but Poseidon refused to accept that he had
taken the bolt. Percy, Grover, and Annabeth; Percy s other friend, set off on a quest to

school for more than a year without being expelled. This is shown on page 10,
where the narrator says, ..this was my sixth school in six years, and (I) was
probably going to be kicked out again. This quote shows that Percy does not have
much confidence, and is expelled from school a lot. Also towards the beginning of
the book, on page 44, Percy begins to recall multiple instances where something
creepy had happened in a school, before he got expelled. Percy is beginning to
understand that he is different, in a special way. In the middle of the book, Percy
is introduced to new beliefs, a change in character, and he starts to develop a new
attitude. He learns that he is a half blood, which explains why he has ADHD and
dyslexia, and also explains why he had to transfer schools so frequently. This is
shown on page 93. Annabeth, Percy s new half blood friend, explains to Percy that
most half bloods move from school to school constantly, and are diagnosed with
ADHD and dyslexia. Percy began to finally realize that he wasn t just some strange
kid, who had problems with reading and staying still. He was a half blood, and
there were tons of other kids just like him. He was more confident, brave, and more
willing to take risks.

The Amazing Things That Books Can Do Analysis
Amazing Things Paper At the beginning of the year I would read the book, The
Amazing Things That Books Can Do, By Ryan Joiner. This book would allow the
class to have a great discussion about what books can do for them. My class would
discuss when the perfect time to read, where to read, and who to read to. As a
teacher I would point out that it is great to read when a student is feeling down
because books can brighten their day. Books can allow students to increase their
motivation, imagination, and determination. Books can develop students talent or
help them find theirs. I would clarify all the statements I have listed above with my
students, after I read the book to them. After the discussion I would assign my

I plan to read one page a week and hang up the quote in my classroom. After reading
the page I would open up a class discussion by asking them if they agree or disagree
with the statement. Afterwards we would explore other books or book that fit the
page. If we explored more than one book, my students would read them
independently. Otherwise, I would read the book aloud and then we would
deliberate. For younger aged children I would only chose one book that fit the
page and would read it two or three times throughout the week. The first and second
reading, the students would answer comprehension question but on the third read
we would speculate on why the characters are making those choices. Also, we
would analyze what would happen if the character did something different. For
older students, it would allow me, as a teacher, to be more flexible. If there was
only one book that fitted with the page then I would do the same process as I did
with the younger students. But if there was multiple books, I could have students
working independently or collaborating with groups. It all would depend on the topic

A State s Natural Resources Wealth Influence Its Economic...
How does a state s natural resource wealth influence its economic development? For
the past fifty years, versions of this question have figured prominently in debates
over dependency theory, economic dualism, a proposed New International Economic
Order, East Asia s success, and Africa s collapse. Since the late 1980s, economists
and political scientists have produced a flood of new research that bears witness to
this question. There is now strong evidence that states with abundant resource wealth
perform less well than their resource poor counterparts, but there is little agreement
on why this occurs.
Natural resources undoubtedly play an important role in the economy of many
countries. Whether their contribution to development is beneficial or detrimental is a
contested and difficult question to answer. Arguably countries like Australia, U.A.E.
and Norway have gained enormously over long periods from their natural resources,
others like Iran and Russia have gained in economic growth terms but maybe at the
expense of institutional development, while in some countries, such as Angola and
Sierra Leone, natural resources have been at the heart of violent conflicts with
devastating effects for society. With many developing countries being highly resource
dependent, a deeper understanding of the sources and solutions to the potential
problem of natural resources is highly relevant.
The disappointing performance of resource rich economies, especially those with a

Social Judgment Theory Essay
Abstract
The best theory to addresses how people s attitudes change as situations and
involvement change is social judgment theory. A review of the literature on social
judgment theory (SJT) improves understanding of one s own judgment process and
of one s work, marital and interpersonal relationship. The social judgment theory of
attitude change was first presented by the U.S. based Turkish psychologist Muzafer
Sherif (1906 88) and the U.S. psychologist Carl I(vor) Hovland (1912 61) in Social
Judgment (1961). SJT attempted to explain how attitude change is influenced by
judgmental processes. The focus of SJT was about attitude change on a specific issue
that results from judgments on related issues. This study provides insight literature ...

However, Carl Hovland died before completing the book Social Judgment in 1961,
thus Sherif carried on their study and published the book after Hovland s death
(Sherif Hovland, 1961). Carolyn W. Sherif, Muzafer Sherif s wife, is one of primary
theorist of social judgment theory (Sherif et al., 1965). Carolyn W. Sherif and
Muzafer integrated the social judgment involvement approach into the study of
individual attitude and behavior within the patterned interaction of such groups in
Attitude and Attitude Change: The Social Judgment Involvement Approach (1965),
the book in which the social judgment involvement theory is detailed.
Fundamental Theoretical Ideas
The focus of SJT is that an attitude change on a specific issue will result from
judgments on related issues. Because we cannot observe a person s attitude using
traditional research methods, therefore the social judgment theory was developed
(Sherif Sherif, 1968). Based on Muzafer Sherif and Carl Hovland s research (1961),
they establish the ordered alternative questionnaire to measure the judgments. The
questionnaire requires that the participant rate a list of statements as being
acceptable, objectionable, or non commitment (neither acceptable nor objectionable).
An individual s latitudes of acceptance, rejection, and non commitment represent an
individual s feelings about the topics. According to Sherif et al.
The Forces Removal of Children from their Parents in Ayn...
There are just over fifty countries in the world that are currently run by dictators and
the severity of the dictatorship varies from country to country. Some dictators can be
relatively kind in their rule where others can be very harsh. One thing that happens in
these harsh dictatorships is that children are removed from their parents at birth.
Though the reasons for this differ in many ways, three of the most prominent are that
children learn from their parents, it focuses the children on their job or goal assigned
to them, and that there will be favoritism between the parents and the children over
other people.
Passed on knowledge can be a real problem to a fearful dictator. There is a saying,
knowledge is power . This statement is very true because knowledge has the ability
to open the eyes of people to things unseen. It allows for exploration and sometimes
rebellion. The rebellion factor of this is what scares dictators. If children are allowed
to live with their parents, the parents have the opportunity to let the children know
things about the past and what is wrong with the world. If the children knew of this
they might have the ability to stand together and rebel against the government.
The only benefit to removing a child from its home with the parents, is that it allows
the child to become focused on the duty they are given by the ruler. When the child
is taken from the home, they lose the distraction of having a family. They may
become a more productive

was. As i passed the corner I realized I forgot to stop and wave good bye to me. As
we were few steps from the crossing guard to go onto campus, I see the clouds
darkening and air . I left the girl walk with her friends I quickly try to run as fast as I
can too not be late for my first day of school, but I heard a noise in the corner where I
was suppose to turn and then I found myself in an alleyway between a Home Depot
and Stater Bros. I looked at the sewer lid then boom! Lighting hit the the stop sign
nearby seeing it burn up. As I looked back at the lid It was open with the lid on the
side of the road. Then I felt a slight touch on my shoulder. I turn back and see me. He
said You are my ticket to the good life What I said, what do you mean? Then he
pushed me into the sewer as I held my nose and closed my mouth. I look up and see
me closed the lid and the darkness filled the sewer. After I woke up choking on a
large piece of wood the size of a door floating in the water. As I clear the water from
my eyes I see a fall in the water as I try to paddle the board
Analysis Of The Grizzly Man By Werner Herzog
Grizzly Man
Werner Herzog directed a documentary film called Grizzly Man to show viewers how
much interest Timothy Treadwell demonstrated towards human nature and how he
demonstrates human nature through himself. Timothy Treadwell spent thirteen long
summers in Alaskan Peninsula. He went to go portray his love and protection to the
wild life and grizzly bears, which lead him to his miserable death. Herzog creates a
sequence of scenes, comments, and interviews from people who is well connected
directly or indirectly with Treadwell. His purpose of directing the Grizzly Man
documentary through Treadwell s own film was to convey the viewers the
difference of human beings and the wild life animals. Herzog s main effective
argument was to convey how courageous and how insane Treadwell was to spend
thirteen summers in the wild life of grizzly bears. Werner Herzog created this
documentary of Treadwell s films because he was not your ordinary type of guy. He
was very bold, brave, adventurous. Herzog introduces Treadwell with one of
Treadwell s shots that he films during his grizzly bear journey. Treadwell states,
I m out in the prime of big green. Behind me are Ed and Rowdy, members of an up
and coming sub adult gang. They are challenging everything, including me. Goes
with the territory. If I show weakness, if I retreat, I may be hurt. I may be killed. I
Must hold my own if I m stay within this land. For once there is weakness they will
exploit it. They will take me out. They will
Example Of Alcaeus As An Epic Hero
An epic poem takes readers into the world of ancient civilizations and reflects the
ideals of the culture where the epic s origins lay. An example is the epic Alcaeus ,
which demonstrates the ideals of the Ancient Greece culture. Alcaeus, a young and
powerful warrior, lives in Sparta with his wife Alecto. King Vorise asks him to
persuade the King of Thebes to give Sparta their Ancient Lands back. The King of
Thebes claims to him that he has to accomplish two quests before getting the lands.
Alcaeus, while trying to accomplish the first task, gets stuck in the Underworld for
five years and then is rescued by Hermes. On his way to Sparta, Alcaeus is attacked
by the monster Androniclus. Alcaeus defeats the monster, comes back to his house
and understands what his only weakness was. The author represented the culture of
Ancient Greece and explained how her poem fits into the characteristics of an Epic....

Alcaeus is very good at fighting and larger than life strong, similar to Odysseus in the
Odyssey . He has a journey that he succeeds with and achieves his goal, because he
is very talented and brave: he fights a monster, and gets the stone of immortality from
Hades. Alcaeus has a flaw like every hero does: he makes impulsive decisions, does
not listen to others advices and thinks that he is always right in everything. For
example, when his friend Aiden warns Alcaeus not to touch the cursed fruit, Alcaeus
doesn t listen and regrets his rash decision later. The author of the poem demonstrates
the ideal qualities of Ancient Greece through Alcaeus: strength, talent, bravery,
courage and succeeding in battles and
Paediatric Ultrasound
Although emergency physicians have been utilising PoCUS since the 1990 s its use
by emergency medicine paediatricians is relatively recent with a collaborative

In some areas there is good evidence that adequately trained emergency physicians
can perform and interpret limited ultrasound scan, in other areas larger multicentre
studies are still required. For clinical governance adequate training of all users is
essential as is audit of their performance. Ultrasound has largely replaced CT
scanning and plain radiology as well as invasive procedures with their inherent risks
as the first line investigation in many medical emergencies As technology continues
to advance it is likely that ultrasound will have an increasing role to play in
emergency medicine both in hospital and prehospital settings. It is essential that
training and evaluation through well conducted research keep pace with these
advances to ensure they are to be to the benefit not detriment of patient

##ism Of Modernism In Virginia Woolf s Modern Fiction
In her essay Modern Fiction Virginia Woolf provides an abstract analogy, in order to
explain human existence, Life is not a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged;
life is a luminous halo . Despite Woolf s intentions being fixed in addressing the
centric qualities of life, her comment unintentionally summons a suitable definition
for the modernist movement. Modernismis comprehensive it is a halo. A halo,
comprised of many different sub genres such as, Expressionism, Dadaism, and
Vorticism, to mention but a few. This makes defining the movement, in short;
arduous. However, Woolf s metaphor of life as a halo mirrors modernism as her
statement is as all encompassing and open to interpretation as the movement itself.
In addition to this, her comment also presents the reality of the modernist
movement, for if her employment of life were to be replaced with modernism in
her statement, it would still hold true. Modernism is not a series of gig lamps
symmetrically arranged. It is instead a fluid movement which begs for symbolic
interpretation. A necessity, provided by Woolf in her halo analogy. Despite the range
of the movement and the diversity of its sub genres, there are some discernible traits
in the classic modernist text. The aim of this essay is to explore one of the primary
traits of the modernist movement; symbolism. Modernist writers, T.S Eliot and
Virginia Woolfboth employed the practice of symbolism. Furthermore, the
fundamental question of this essay with the

employee wages by 10% leading for the workers to go on a violent strike...Hayes

After the railroad successes, many Chinese men decided to leave back for China

The immigration of the Chinese in American Society angered many other immigrants

Denis Kearney led the violent abuses of the Chinese using his Kearneyites in San
Francisco because the Chinese were a source of cheaper labor compared to the other
immigrants
Chinese were Rice eaters and the Irish were Beef eaters
Chinese coolies were terrorized by Kearneyites (would cut of their pigtails and

The Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 was an act passed by Congress that stopped
Chinese immigrant laborers from coming to the U.S.
Supreme Court Case: U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark stated that according to the 14th

The Role Of The Handkerchief In Othello
Consider the role of the handkerchief. How in the world can a small piece of cloth
cause so much trouble?
Othello has a special connection for the handkerchief he gave Desdemona. He
believed that Desdemona s virginity was still within her as long as she kept the
handkerchief. Because of the story Othello told Desdemona about the handkerchief
marks a great importance in Othello s past life. He claims that he got the
handkerchief from his mother, who in turn got it form an Egyptian charmer, that told
her that so long as she kept it, a strong bond between her and her husband would be
maintained. Othello believes the white cloth, with strawberries demonstrates a pure

  • 2. Geoffrey Chaucer s Influence On The 19th Century Geoffrey Chaucer was one of the most acclaimed writers of the 14th century. It was not exactly certain when Geoffrey Chaucer was, born but it was known to be around 1340 to 1344. He was the son of John Chaucer and Agnes Copton. John Chaucer was a very successful London wine merchant, but soon died in 1366. His wife Agnes got remarried to another Chaucer, said to be a cousin of her late husband John. Just where the boy got his schooling is not known; he may have been at either Oxford or Cambridge, or neither. (Kunitz Haycraft 98). Not much was known about his early life, but through his various pieces of work we can conclude that he was able fluently read French, Latin, and Italian. Although there was proof that Chaucer could read and write before he went to school (historylearningsite.co.uk). He was taught by one of his father s clerks who enlarged his income by teaching as one of his side jobs. His family home was known to be in the area of St. Martin, on Thames Street. John Chaucer was raised up in a well to do family environment, the family not being too rich or too poor. Most of the work positions that John had were all made possible through the various connections his father had. Chaucer was taken prisoner in 1359 after joining the English army s invasion of France which was all taken place during the Hundred Years War, his ransom was paid on the first day of March in 1360 by King Edward. In 1366 many assumed that Chaucer was an administrator for Prince

Specifically, what does the $718 million gain in Berkshire s market value of equity imply about the intrinsic value of GEICO? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In August up to the announcement, the Berkshire Hathaway had been closing at an average of $24,753. This shows that the announcement had a direct impact of the stock price. The reason for the increase in the stock price in Berkshire Hathaway was dependant on several factors. With the GEICO stock rising with $12.875 to $68.625 on the New York Stock Exchange, Geico Hathaway gained approximately $440 million on their 34.25 million shares in GEICO. With the gain from the upcoming deal with Walt Disney Company, as well as the publication of the Value Line Forecast for GEICO, it is understandable that the Berkshire Hathaway stock rose. Another factor that also comes into play in this case is the famous track record of Warren Buffett when it comes to investing. Conclusion: The increase in Berkshire Hathaway was a response from the markets valuation of GEICO Company to increase, the reinvestments of the money that would be gained on the future sales of Capital Cities/ABC, as well as the markets trust in Warren Buffett s investments to be successful. B) How well has Berkshire Hathaway performed? In the aggregate? In its investment in Scott amp; Fetzer? In its investments in earlier purchases of GEICO stock? In its investments in convertible preferred securities? Berkshire Hathaway has a very good proven track record, due to the investments in

He is one of the biggest contributors to the development of Western art today. He was also called the divine one and The Renaissance Man . Michelangelo s ancestors before that were small time bankers. The bank that his family was working with failed and his father had to get a temporary governmental job. A couple of months after Michelangelowas born, his family moved back to Florence, Italy. His mother was ill for a long time and died in 1481 when Michelangelo was just six. Comparing Robert Frost s Out Out and Seamus Heany s Mid Term Break Works Cited Missing The subject of both poems is the untimely death of young people in tragic accidents rather than sickness. Strangely both boys are killed by machinery, the boy in Out, Out by a mechanical saw and the boy in Mid Term Break by a car. Both poems describe the reactions of the families to the deaths each of the families reacting quite differently. In my opinion Out, Out has the most intriguing title, being an extract taken from Macbeth . In the play the line reads Out, out brief candle and the line is said by Macbeth upon hearing of his wife s death. The candle, a symbol of life and its fragility, relates to the sudden death of the young boy. Candles make an appearance in Mid Term Break too when candles soothed the bedside of the body of the dead child. The title Mid Term Break is a misleading one, suggesting fun and holidays and a break from school. In reality, the term referred to in the title symbolises life, with term s end meaning death. The break (the boy s death) was before the term s end and therefore an untimely death before the boy has matured and is ready to die. The settings of both poems are quite different; the poet, Robert Frost, is an American writer and chooses to set his poem in his native country. Out, Out provides the reader with an image of picturesque mountain ranges, five mountain ranges one behind the other , and an idyllic rural setting under sunset far into Vermont and is clearly set in North America. The saw mills and heavily wooded areas, the sawing work the boy is doing all hints at an isolated, rural existence. The close family appears to be working together at

People are reflections of the interactions they make with the people and institutions surrounding them, and when this is changed the people themselves change too. This is prevalent in both The Lord of The Flies by William Goldberg and The Sweetheart of Song Tra Bong by Tim O brien, as both stories cause the characters introduced in their isolated settings to adapt in a way that reflect their new surroundings. These characters start out as normal individuals, but as time passes, they accustom themselves to the new circumstances they face. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Definition: What What is a serial killer? Retired Special Agent Robert Ressler, a twenty two year veteran of the FBI s Behavioral Sciences Unit in Quantico, Virginia, is responsible for creating the term serial killer. He defines this person as one who commits a series of murders, usually three or more, the victims most often being strangers, and usually with a cooling off period in between each kill (Kelleher Kelleher, 1998; Pearson, 1998; Ressler and Shactman, 1997). This precise definition is necessary to distinguish this type of predator from the mass murderer (who kills many simultaneously), mercenaries, war criminals, or mafia hit men. Profiling: Who and How Though serial killer may have a fairly specific definition, there is no single precise profile for the serial killer. Each has a unique identity, set of motives and methods, and a unique psychopathology that would attempt to explain the mens rea, that is, the purpose or intent of the murder. Psychological profiling is an investigative tool used strictly to answer the how of the crime, not the why (Severence et al, 1992; Lanier and Henry, 1998). By examining the psychological make up of the serial killer, it is often possible to explain the behavior, which might make it a useful tool in solving crimes. Theories of Criminal Behavior Many theories have been

Many individuals and groups within the early Christian movement rejected it as heresy. However, it was ultimately accepted into the official canon, over many objections. It is now the favorite gospel of many conservative Christians, and the gospelleast referred to by many liberal Christians. The Gospel of Johnis noticeably different from the other three Gospels in content, and the structure of the content. The first chapter of John is very similar to the beginning of the Book of Genesis, where it talks about the beginning of the world and creation. Another difference between the Gospel of John and the other Synoptics is the lack of a certain miracle Jesusperformed found in the book. Unlike the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, John has no record of Jesus performing exorcisms. While John does talk about healing the sick and blind, nowhere in the Gospel do we find Jesus exorcising demons. One of the main talking points within the Gospels is the ministry of Jesus. From what we can determine, upon reading the four Gospels, we can see that of the four, John tells us Jesus ministry lasted longer than a year. According to John, the span of Jesus ministry lasted three years instead of one year (as depicted by the other three Synoptics). Unlike Matthew, Mark, and Luke, John primarily emphasized Jesus divinity instead of humanity. A verse that supports John s focus of divinity

In a study published by Hung Pollock and Karalunas, they created an experiment that tested children with and without ADHD s working memory (WM) to better understand how their executive functioning (EF) developed (2010). In order for an individual to use and learn an executive function, that individual must first use WM to remember and practice that function until it becomes automatic. Hung Pollock and Karalunas used two types of test to measure reaction time (RT) and apply that data to WM. The first test was alphabet arithmetic (AA), a computer program that would present a question with a number and a letter (i.e A+1=?) (Hung Pollock C. L., Karalunas S. L. 2010). Children were expected to replace the letter with the number associated with its position in the alphabet (i.e. A=1, B=2, C=3) and solve. The children were told to press that enter button with would record their RT and then say their answer aloud to the research assistant who then recorded answers (Hung Pollock C. L., Karalunas S. The fairies helped him up and told him to go and defeat the beast. He asked them what beast but they would not tell him. He left fearing if he stayed too long they would bite him again. • 34. The Role Of Suicides In The Virgin Suicides The concepts of honour and loyalty appear to be intrinsically linked, packaged together under the overarching category of general chivalry. However, a closer look through the lens of Jeffrey Eugenides novel The Virgin Suicides reveals this to be a misconception. One can exist without the other. In fact, none of the Lisbon girls peers display both. Interactions with other girls are almost nonexistent within the novel, and while the neighbourhood boys may be loyal, they are not honourable. Furthermore, Trip Fontaine, who stands apart from the collective conscience of the other boys, can be considered the opposite. By examining this juxtaposition of vastly different approaches to interacting with the Lisbon girls, the falsity of both methods can be revealed. Understanding this, further insight into the four older girls enigmatic motivation for their suicides can be gained. To begin, it is necessary to establish how the boys and Trip are able to act in a way which affects the girls so severely. Maslow, a pioneer of humanistic psychology, argues that one must satisfy their physical and emotional needs in a particular order, and only those who reach the fifth and final tier will be ultimately happy (382). Dubbed the love needs , the third tier can only be satisfied by the creation of strong friendly or romantic bonds with others. Because the girls have been rejected by their own community after their sister s suicide, and their own parents have shut the house in

  • 41. A State s Natural Resources Wealth Influence Its Economic... How does a state s natural resource wealth influence its economic development? For the past fifty years, versions of this question have figured prominently in debates over dependency theory, economic dualism, a proposed New International Economic Order, East Asia s success, and Africa s collapse. Since the late 1980s, economists and political scientists have produced a flood of new research that bears witness to this question. There is now strong evidence that states with abundant resource wealth perform less well than their resource poor counterparts, but there is little agreement on why this occurs. Natural resources undoubtedly play an important role in the economy of many countries. Whether their contribution to development is beneficial or detrimental is a contested and difficult question to answer. Arguably countries like Australia, U.A.E. and Norway have gained enormously over long periods from their natural resources, others like Iran and Russia have gained in economic growth terms but maybe at the expense of institutional development, while in some countries, such as Angola and Sierra Leone, natural resources have been at the heart of violent conflicts with devastating effects for society. With many developing countries being highly resource dependent, a deeper understanding of the sources and solutions to the potential problem of natural resources is highly relevant. The disappointing performance of resource rich economies, especially those with a point

A review of the literature on social judgment theory (SJT) improves understanding of one s own judgment process and of one s work, marital and interpersonal relationship. The social judgment theory of attitude change was first presented by the U.S. based Turkish psychologist Muzafer Sherif (1906 88) and the U.S. psychologist Carl I(vor) Hovland (1912 61) in Social Judgment (1961). Sherif and Muzafer integrated the social judgment involvement approach into the study of individual attitude and behavior within the patterned interaction of such groups in Attitude and Attitude Change: The Social Judgment Involvement Approach (1965), the book in which the social judgment involvement theory is detailed. Fundamental Theoretical Ideas The focus of SJT is that an attitude change on a specific issue will result from judgments on related issues. Because we cannot observe a person s attitude using traditional research methods, therefore the social judgment theory was developed (Sherif Sherif, 1968). Based on Muzafer Sherif and Carl Hovland s research (1961), they establish the ordered alternative questionnaire to measure the judgments. The questionnaire requires that the participant rate a list of statements as being acceptable, objectionable, or non commitment (neither acceptable nor objectionable). An individual s latitudes of acceptance, rejection, and non commitment represent an individual s feelings about the topics. According to Sherif et al.
  • 43. The Forces Removal of Children from their Parents in Ayn... There are just over fifty countries in the world that are currently run by dictators and the severity of the dictatorship varies from country to country. Some dictators can be relatively kind in their rule where others can be very harsh. One thing that happens in these harsh dictatorships is that children are removed from their parents at birth. Though the reasons for this differ in many ways, three of the most prominent are that children learn from their parents, it focuses the children on their job or goal assigned to them, and that there will be favoritism between the parents and the children over other people. Passed on knowledge can be a real problem to a fearful dictator. There is a saying, knowledge is power . This statement is very true because knowledge has the ability to open the eyes of people to things unseen. It allows for exploration and sometimes rebellion. The rebellion factor of this is what scares dictators. If children are allowed to live with their parents, the parents have the opportunity to let the children know things about the past and what is wrong with the world. If the children knew of this they might have the ability to stand together and rebel against the government. The only benefit to removing a child from its home with the parents, is that it allows the child to become focused on the duty they are given by the ruler. When the child is taken from the home, they lose the distraction of having a family. They may become a more productive

Despite Woolf s intentions being fixed in addressing the centric qualities of life, her comment unintentionally summons a suitable definition for the modernist movement. Modernismis comprehensive it is a halo. A halo, comprised of many different sub genres such as, Expressionism, Dadaism, and Vorticism, to mention but a few. This makes defining the movement, in short; arduous. However, Woolf s metaphor of life as a halo mirrors modernism as her statement is as all encompassing and open to interpretation as the movement itself. In addition to this, her comment also presents the reality of the modernist movement, for if her employment of life were to be replaced with modernism in her statement, it would still hold true. Modernism is not a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged. It is instead a fluid movement which begs for symbolic interpretation. A necessity, provided by Woolf in her halo analogy. Despite the range of the movement and the diversity of its sub genres, there are some discernible traits in the classic modernist text.
