The Roman Republic was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus. It was originally ruled by 7 kings but the republic was established in 500 BC after overthrowing the Etruscan kings. The republican government was ruled by the senate and assemblies with consuls elected annually and tribunes representing the plebeians. The military adopted organizational reforms that improved flexibility and coordination. Over the next 200 years Rome expanded across Italy through conquest and establishing colonies to develop loyalty in conquered territories.
