Basic Types Of Rolling Bearings
There are four basic types of rolling bearings: deep groove ball bearings, taper roller bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, and spherical roller bearings. Each type has a distinct design and is suited for different load characteristics. Deep groove ball bearings are the most common and can handle radial and axial loads. Taper roller bearings can handle both radial and axial loads. Cylindrical roller bearings are designed primarily for radial loads. Spherical roller bearings can handle misalignment and high speeds/loads. Rolling bearings are identified using designation systems which indicate type, dimensions, and other specifications.

5. Design Features
• Deep Groove Ball Bearing(DGBB) are the simplest and most widely used bearings
• Available in various sizes and unique features
• The bearing is made of four basic components; Inner ring / Outer ring / Balls / Cages
• They are non-separable by design and are suitable for high speeds
• They can carry mainly radial load and also axial loads in both directions
• Available in Open type / Pre-greased with metallic shields or rubber seals
Deep Groove Ball Bearing
6. Applications
• They are most widely used bearings
Deep Groove Ball Bearing
• Ceiling fans
• Home appliances
• Pumps & motors
• Power tools
• Small engines
• Small gearboxes
• 2W/3W/4W
7. Bearing Sealing
• Bearings are to be protected against contamination like dust, dirt or moisture
• Sealed bearings are pre-greased and fitted with either metallic shields or rubber seals
• Medium temperature grease is being used for general applications
• Standard pre-greased bearings are filled with normal fill grade; up to 35% of the free space
• However, special greases are available for specific applications; High temperature/ Wide temperature / Low noise

8. Bearing Sealing
Deep Groove Ball Bearing
Metallic Shielded Bearing
• Pre-greased with metallic shield
• Non-contact type
• Low friction; Higher speed
• Fair protection against dust
Rubber Sealed Bearing
• Pre-greased with rubber seals
• Contact type
• Fair friction; Fair speed
• Very good protection against moisture/water
10. Design Features
• TRB is a unique bearing designed to take combined load
• The bearing is made of four basic components; Inner ring (Cone) / Outer ring (Cup) / Taper rollers / Cage
• They can carry both radial and axial loads referred as combined load
• Available in various sizes in single row, double row, four row and cartridge type
• Available in Open type / Paired type / Integrated with grease & seals

11. Taper Roller Bearing
True Rolling Motion
• When the lines from cup, cone and rollers are extended, they meet at point on the axis. It is called apex
• This is achieved through precision grinding and super finishing process
• True rolling motion helps to have a perfect rotation of all the components with least friction
• This is a unique feature of TRB , helping to have least or no slippage of rollers
Apex
True Rolling Motion
When a perfectly ground taper roller is made to roll
on a surface, it comes back to its original position
without slippage.

12. Applications
• TRB is a versatile bearing capable of taking both radial and axial load efficiently
Taper Roller Bearing
• Automotive hub assembly • Industrial gearbox
• Small gearbox
• Differential gearbox
• Transmission box
• Railway wagon wheels
14. Design Features
• Cylindrical Roller Bearings (CRB) are designed to take mainly radial loads used in many industrial applications
• They are known as separable bearings. Inner and outer rings can be separated for ease of mounting
• The bearing is made of four basic components; Inner ring / Outer ring / Cylindrical rollers / Cages
• Bearings with many different cross sections are available; N / NU / NUP /NJ /NH types
• They are available in single , double and four row design.
• Bearings without cage are called as Full Complement bearings with higher load carrying capacity

15. Different cross section designs;
• Different cross section design is achieved by selectively providing ribs on inner or outer rings
• These CRBs can be used as
• Locating bearing ( also known as fixed bearing)
• Bearing location is fixed on shaft and in the housing. Takes both radial and axial loads
• Non-locating bearing (also known as floating bearing)
• Allows to float during thermal expansion. Takes only radial load.
• Semi locating bearing
• Takes radial load and axial load only in one direction. Allows expansion only one direction.
Cylindrical Roller Bearing
16. Applications
• CRBs are designed to take heavy radial loads with moderately high speed capability
Cylindrical Roller Bearing
• Heavy duty industrial motors • Industrial gearbox• Heavy duty equipment • Railway axle boxes
18. Design Features
• Spherical Roller Bearings (SRB) are equipped with two rows of spherical rollers
• They are designed to take misalignment in the application with self aligning feature
• The bearing is made of four basic components; Inner ring / Outer ring / Spherical rollers / Cages
• They are non-separable by design and are suitable for high radial loads and high speeds
• Thrust SRBs are designed to take axial loads
Spherical Roller Bearing

19. Design Features
• Spherical Roller Bearings (SRB) are available with straight bore and taper bore
• Taper bore bearings helps in easy mounting and dismounting
• Adaptor sleeves or Withdrawal sleeves are used to mount taper bore bearings

22. General guidelines
Bearing Designation System
• Every bearing is marked with Alpha numeric number known as designation. It is to identify the type, bore, clearance and
other special features
• Typically the bearing designation comprises of three, four or five digit numbers with prefix and suffixes
• The first number or letter represent the bearing type.
• The last two numbers give information about the bore of the bearing
• The second and third number refers to the dimensional series.
