3. • Store the bearings in their original packing to avoid any contamination or corrosion
• Place large and heavier bearings on a flat surface with complete support at the bottom.
• Never store the bearings in upright position
• Store bearings in cool and dry rooms away from direct sunlight
• Avoid contact with aggressive media like chemicals, gases, acidic fumes etc. during storage
• Open bearings can be stored up to five years. Greased bearings needs regular attention
Importance of bearing maintenance
Importance of proper bearing storage
4. • Ensure safety of the equipment and the operator
• Simplified and faster process
• Maximizing the use of load carrying capacity
• Enhance the bearing life
• Prevent creeping of rings from turning on or in their seats under load
Importance of bearing maintenance
Importance of proper bearing installation
5. • Ensure the work area is clean and free of dust, dirt and moisture to avoid bearing contamination
• Wipe any surface where the bearing will be placed to avoid contamination
• Use hardened manual drivers to dismount the old bearings. Avoid softer material rods like aluminum or brass
• Softer material can give away chips which can enter bearings.
• Use clean kerosene, diesel or mineral turpentine oil (MTO) to clean the bearings
• Avoid drying the washed bearing with compressed air. It can contaminate with dirt or moisture
• Avoid washing new bearings
• Remove the bearing from the original carton only when the bearing is ready for mounting
Importance of bearing maintenance
Clean Work Area – First essential step
6. Avoid direct hammer blows on the bearings while mounting. Follow recommended mounting methods
• Different mounting methods
• Mechanical method
• Hydraulic method
• Thermal method
Importance of bearing maintenance
Mechanical Method Hydraulic Method Thermal Method
Bearing mounting methods
7. Importance of bearing maintenance
Mechanical Method
• Suitable for small size bearings
• Use proper sleeves
• Apply even mounting force
Hydraulic Method
• Suitable for medium & large size bearings
• Use proper sleeves and support plates
Thermal Method
• Suitable for higher interference fits
• Induction heaters are in extensive use
• Equipped with temperature sensor
& demagnetizer
• Avoid bearing heating beyond 120
0
C
• Use safety glows to handle hot bearings

10. Importance of bearing maintenance
Avoid damaged parts.
• Ensure all parts are free of burrs or sharp edges
• Check bearing seating area. Ensure correct size as per the recommended fit level
11. Importance of bearing maintenance
• Apply mounting force on the correct ring
• Push inner ring when mounting on to the shaft
• Push outer ring when mounting in to the housing
• Follow recommended mounting method; Mechanical, Hydraulic or thermal depending on the size & fit level of the bearing
Avoid mounting damages
Wrong mounting method Correct mounting method
