Calcium is a metallic element with an atomic number of 20. It has a silver-white color and melting point of 838.8°C. 99% of calcium in the human body is found in bones and teeth, where it forms the biominerals necessary for structural integrity. Calcium plays important roles in muscle contraction, blood clotting, gluconeogenesis, and acting as a messenger for hormonal activation through the parathyroid hormone and calcitonin systems. Deficiencies can lead to diseases like rickets and osteoporosis, while too much calcium can cause hypercalcemia.
