Rizal volunteered as a military doctor in Cuba during their revolution and yellow fever epidemic. The governor general accepted his offer and instructed him to acquire permission to travel from Manila to Dapitan. Upon receiving acceptance, Rizal wrote the poem "El Canto del Viajero." He then left Dapitan on a steamer accompanied by family and pupils, bidding farewell as the funeral march was played.
