From February 28 to April 13, 1888, Rizal traveled to Japan, meeting key figures like Juan Perez Caballero and O-sei-san, a samurai's daughter. He accepted Caballero's invitation to stay at the Spanish legation, partly to cut living expenses and avoid scrutiny from Spanish authorities. Rizal was impressed by Japan's scenic beauty, cleanliness, and the politeness of its people, while his romantic connection with O-sei-san helped him cope with past heartbreak.
