Two pearl millet varieties with 7.0% and 5.4% higher green forage yields as compared to national check Giant Bajra, were released for cultivation in five south India states. These have significantly higher dry fodder yield and superior/or at par forage quality compared to checks. The release is significant given that India has a shortage of 284 million tons of green fodder and 122 million tons of dry fodder. This demand is likely to grow further and India would require 400 and 117 million tons of green and dry fodder, respectively, by 2025.

Two pearl millet varieties with 7.0% and 5.4% higher
green forage yields as compared to national check
Giant Bajra, were released for cultivation in five south
India states. These have significantly higher dry fodder
yield and superior/or at par forage quality compared to
checks. The release is significant given that India has a
shortage of 284 million tons of green fodder and 122
million tons of dry fodder. This demand is likely to grow

Farmers in the states of Telangana, Tamil Nadu,
Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry can now cultivate
these high-forage pearl millet cultivars to ensure feed
security of their livestock. These varieties are also
resistant to leaf spot and blight diseases.
Driven by feedback from partners that lack of sufficient
fodder is the major constraint to livestock production in
smaller farming communities in the arid and semi-arid
regions of India, the ICRISAT pearl millet team worked
on the development of promising multi-cut forage
varieties in association with Professor Jayashankar
Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU),
Hyderabad. This resulted in the release and notification
in 2020 of two forage pearl millet varieties – TSFB 15-4
and TSFB 15-8. The two varieties can be cultivated as
rainfed crops in the rainy season and as irrigated dry
crops during summer.
The varieties were developed through recurrent
selection breeding methodology in association with
Dr T Shashikala, Forage Breeder from PJTSAU.
Dr SK Gupta, Pearl Millet Breeder at ICRISAT, informed
that based on three-year (2016-2018) multilocation
evaluations in the south zone, TSFB 15-4 and TSFB 15-8
were released for their superior performance over
national and zonal checks.

An ICRISAT groundnut variety called ICGV 91114 resists drought and diseases, has good fodder quality, and replaces varieties grown for over 60 years in India. ICGV 91114 yields 23% higher than previous varieties, with 30% less variability in yields and 36% higher incomes for farmers. It is estimated that full adoption of ICGV 91114 by 2020 could generate over $500 million annually for farmers in the drought-prone Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India, where it has already been planted on 25,000 hectares. ICGV 91114 provides hope for millions of poor farmers in drought-prone areas.

1) Pearl millet is an important crop in Africa and South Asia that is vulnerable to downy mildew disease. The hybrid HHB 67 was widely grown but started succumbing to downy mildew with losses of up to 30%. 2) Researchers used marker-assisted backcrossing and conventional breeding to transfer resistance genes from a donor parent into the parental lines of HHB 67. This took 9 years to transfer genes into one parent and 2 years to transfer into the other. 3) Testing of the improved hybrids showed farmers preferred one that had slightly higher yields and resistance to downy mildew, which was then approved for release.

Soybean grain yield responses to integrated soil fertility management

The present investigation entitled “effect of application of “Grinophyll” on growth and yield of rice was carried out during kharif season of the year 2021 on the field of ASPEE, Agricultural Research and Development Foundation, Tansa farm, At-Nare, Tal-Wada, Dist- Palghar, Maharashtra. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design. The three treatments (Control, Grinophyll @ 4ml, and Grinophyll @6ml per 15 liters of water) were replicated twice times on four varieties of rice namely Dandi, Gurjari, Jaya, and GAR-13. The plant population per meter square (34.5), plant height (105.9 cm), number of tillers per plant (13.7), number of panicles per plant (13), number of panicles per square meter (442) and length of panicle (25.8 cm) was recorded maximum with application of Grinophyll @ 6 ml /15 liters of water on rice cv. “GAR-13”. The highest number of seeds per panicle (203.5), test weight (34.1 g), grain yield (57.45 q/ha) and straw yield (85.08 q/ha) was found with application of Grinophyll @ 6 ml / 15 liters of water.The data clearly revealed that, the yield obtained with treatment Grinophyll @ 6 ml / 15 liters of water on rice cv. “GAR 13” was significantly higher than all other treatments and also for growth parameters.

The study explored fodder value chains in Bihar, India. It found that paddy straw and wheat straw account for 95% of marketed fodder. Four supply chain types were identified, with 10% of fodder traded directly between producers and consumers. Traders at different levels facilitate trading. Fodder gains up to 240% in value from producers to consumers. Transportation is a major cost, accounting for 36% of added costs. Lack of storage, policies, and credit were identified as constraints.

Assessment of losses of jackfruit as perceived by the farmers

Nigerian farmers beat high temperatures with dry-season groundnut varieties.

- Farmers in northern Nigeria are increasingly growing groundnut during the dry season using improved varieties that can tolerate the hot temperatures. Over 5,000 farmers are now involved in dry season groundnut production. - One farmer, Mr. Abdulahi Abubakar, has expanded his dry season groundnut farming from 42 hectares to 100 hectares and plans to mechanize the farming. He encourages other farmers, especially youth, to also take up groundnut farming during the dry season. - Scientists have sequenced the genome of the wild ancestor of cultivated groundnut. This breakthrough will help breeders develop improved varieties with traits like higher yields, drought tolerance, disease resistance, and no aflatoxin contamination.

Three new chickpea varieties have been developed with enhanced drought tolerance, disease resistance, and increased yield. These varieties were created using genomics-assisted breeding by ICRISAT and ICAR. The new varieties are awaiting approval for cultivation by Indian farmers. Genomics-assisted breeding has delivered six high-yielding chickpea varieties to India in the last three years. Improved chickpea varieties are needed due to drought threats in chickpea growing regions, as drought can cause up to 60% yield losses annually. Mr Arun Baral, CEO, HarvestPlus, and Dr Jacqueline d’Arros Hughes, Director General, ICRISAT, signed the Memorandum of Understanding, which is made and entered into by IFPRI on behalf of its HarvestPlus Program. On the occasion, Dr Hughes said, After 17 years of fruitful collaboration on biofortification research, we have now decided to elevate this partnership. ICRISAT and HarvestPlus will work together more closely, making available micronutrient-rich varieties, high-quality seed and related technologies to the farming communities and consumers.
