Barium is a silvery-white metal that is extracted from barite ore. It was discovered in 1774 in Europe and named after the Greek word for heavy. Barium has several applications including use as a getter in vacuum tubes to remove gas, in spark plug wires as an alloy with nickel, and as barium sulfate for drilling mud weighting and medical imaging contrast. Its main properties are a melting point of 727°C, boiling point of 1897°C, and density of 3.51 g/cm3.
