The name Ruthenium comes from the Latin word Ruthenia, meaning
Russia.
Ruthenium was discoveredin 1827 by Gottfried W. Osann(below left)
in residues of platinum ore. Karl Klauss isolated the metal in 1844 from the
impure oxide and got all the credit.

USES:
The demand for Ruthenium is rising. It’s used in the electronic industry and
chemical industry with smaller amounts being used in alloying.

It is found in North and South America and in South Africa.

Extraction:
4. It is complex to extract because it exists in ores with other metals. The final
