The document analyzes the results of a film review questionnaire given to 15 people aged 15 and older. Key findings include:
- The majority (9 out of 15) read film reviews before watching a film to help inform their decision.
- Over half (8 out of 15) are influenced by the star rating on a review in their decision to see a film.
- Most people access film reviews online via websites or social media rather than print sources like magazines.
- While the main body of text has some impact, viewers are also influenced by other elements like the film poster, trailer, and star rating.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

This questionnaire was handed out to a variety of

questionnaires answered by people from these age
groups

3. 1. Do you read film reviews before you watch a
film?

yes no
This bar chart shows that 9 out of
15 people read film reviews before
watching a film while 6 out of 15 do
not. This suggests that the majority
of people make the effort to learn
more about a film before watching
it, so that they can make a
conscious decision as to whether or
not they feel the film is appropriate
or appealing to them. Therefore it is
important that out film review
accurately represents out film, so
that people can make the best
decision for themselves before
viewing a film.
4. 2. Do you read film reviews after you watch a
film?
6.5

7.5

8.5
Yes No
These results show that some people decide to read film reviews after they have
watched a film rather than before. This could be to get better understanding of
the film, learn more about the production or you may just be interested in other
peoples opinions. Although these results show that the slight majority of people
do not, there is still a great significant amount of people that do. This means that
it is important to include different view points throughout the main body of text
and information about the film, because people also tend to read film reviews for
other reasons. Not just for making a decision about whether to watch a film or
not.
5. 3. Does the star rating of the film influence your
decision?

6

10
12
Yes No
11/15 people are influenced by the star
rating of a film on a film review while only
4/15 aren’t. This suggests that not only
does the main body of text and extra
features play a role in the influence of the
audience, but that the star rating plays an
important role also. This is usually
something that stands out on a film review
and is something that is easy to spot.
Therefore, since the rating is a massive
selling point for the audience, it is
important that our film gains positive
reviews in order to earn the high ratings.
6. 4. How do you access film reviews
Online websites
Social media
Magazines
Newspapers
This pie chart shows that the majority of people access film reviews through the internet,
whether it be through websites (e.g. the guardian website) or social media networks (e.g.
Twitter or Facebook). With the rapid development of technology, especially the internet, it is
very easy to display reviews both through websites and social networks. Social icons are
usually placed on the page of the review so that the reader can then share it themselves onto
their personal network accounts. This spreads the reviews around making it accessible to a
wider range of people. This is probably why the internet has become more popular than print
media such as magazines and newspapers, because the internet is being much more
convenient and easily accessed when ever the audience wants to.
7. 5. Do you share film reviews onto different other
media social networks?
Yes No
7 8
With the development of the internet, in particular social media, it has
become easier for people to share content to their friends via forwarding,
direct messaging, sharing posts etc. This would make the film review
accessible to a wider range of people. Therefore it would be good or the
review to be accessible online rather than print, since there are now more
ways for it to be shared to a variety of people.
8. 6. What do you prefer to see included on a
review?
0

Film

Trailer Actor
The majority of people would prefer to see a film poster or the trailer on a film review. This
could be because they would like to see something they could identify the film with
elsewhere. For example after seeing the poster on a film review they could identify that it
was the same film being advertised on a build board at the tube station. Whereas seeing a
still image from a scene in the film, would make it hard for the audience to match that
image to a film poster as they could be completely different. The trailer would also give the
audience the opportunity to get a feel for the film themselves as they are reading the
review, to help them come to a decision as to whether or not they want to watch the film.
9. 7. On a Scale of 1-5 (1being the lowest) how much does the
main body of text influence your decision of watching a film?

1 2 3 4 5
The results show that the main
body of text may have an impact
on the readers decision however
doesn't always have a huge one.
Although the majority of people
said that it has a 5/5 influence
on them, more people said that
it had under 3/5 impact on
them. This shows that the
answer is varied depending on
the person, however the main
body of text has proven to be
important and therefore it is
crucial that our film has a fairly
good review, in order to draw in
our target audience.
