2. Secondary Audience research
Baby driver
psychographic
The psychographic for the film baby driver is a
mainstream audience. As the director of the
film, Edgar wright, has created other hit films
such as Sean of the dead and Hot fuzz due to
the production cost of the film and the director
of it, it’s expected to hit the mainstream
audience as well as doing well in the box office.
On the rotten Tomatoes score its rated fresh
with 92% which shows how well received the
film is by critics which appeals to the audience
more as it has good reviews.
Age
The audience age range for the Baby driver
film is directing between the ages 15-28. As
the films age rating is a 15 due to bad
language, violence and the content in the
movie it wouldn’t be appropriate for teenagers
under that age. Due to the action sequences in
the film as well as the style of music they use
its really targeting the younger audience which
is why I don’t believe it would appeal to the
general audience over 28. The character of the
film is also in early 20s, having a protagonist so
young would relate more with the younger
audience and make it more appealing for them
to watch.
Gender
I think Baby driver can appeal to both
genders, as the content involved has a bit for
everyone such as romance and action.
However I think generally the film is more
aimed at the male audience due to the
action, violence and car chases involved.
These elements more appeal to the male
audience than they do female. They have,
however, also included elements in the film
that appeal to the female audience as well so
it’s not just aimed to one gender.
Social class
From research conducted
from cinema audience it
is shown that the
majority of people who
go and watch films at the
cinema is C1- Lower
middle class. This is
conducted by looking at
the population in the UK
and seeing how well the
film does at the box
office depending on what
social class has gone to
see it. This applies to
Baby driver as the
majority will be lower
middle class.
Observation
From my research I have
found that for my project
I will be aiming it to my
audience that is ages 18
to late 20s, mainly to the
male audience and those
who come from the C1
social class
3. Secondary Audience research
Filmento
Psychographic
The psychographic for the YouTube channel Filmento
are for those audiences who want to dive deeper into
a film and know more about it, so more for a film
fanatic audience. The most views the youtuber has
for a video is over 3 million, Depending on what the
focus of the video is about and what film they are
doing the more it appeals to the audience and more
views it will get. The most popular videos they have
done are about the films, Men in black international,
Charlies angles and Aquaman. Most of his videos and
these in particular aim at criticising the film so to get
the video popular he chooses a film that is known to
be bad yet popular and analysis to the audience why
it is bad. Which also helps determine if they want to
watch the film or not.
Age
The audience age range for Filmento’s videos I have
worked out that they’re early 20’s to mid 30’s. I don’t
think these videos would really interest teenagers as
they just want to watch a film for entertainment
however people in mid 20’s are more mature and
want to know and learn about there interests in this
case films. I have also worked this out from the
comment section on the videos, the comments are
more mature and not childish and focus on the video
and their opinions which would suggest a older
audience. It also depend on type of movie they are
doing about from what I’ve seen his videos are more
mature movies ages 12 and above nothing under,
which shows that his videos aren’t suitable for
children.
Filmento’s videos are aimed more for the
male audience. I think stereotypically films
and film analysis videos such as his appeal
more to the male audience than they do
female. I also think it depend on what film
he is doing the video about, however
watching his videos he doesn't cater for
anyone, he just gives his opinion and he
doesn’t really care if he unintentionally
insults a gender when he does. As the
YouTuber is also a male he will watch films
that appeal him and therefore the male
gender so most of his films will be more
appealing to the male audience than they
will female.
Gender Social class
Going off from my Baby Driver
research and finding the social
class for the people who watch
movies, I would say the same
social class applies to Filmento
videos as there videos are
about movies and the majority
of people who go to see the
films are Lower middle class.
The majority of the class who
watches films at least most of
them would want to know
more about them which is why
there would be a higher
percentage of those in the
lower middle class watching
videos like Filmento than there
would be in other classes
Observation
I have found from my research
that the majority of the
audience will be male and
between early 20s to mid 30s.
This will help me with my
project as I now have a
understanding of the kind of
audience I am aiming at as I
would like to do something very
similar to Filmento.
4. Secondary Audience research
Now You See It
Psychographic
The psychographic for the YouTube
Channel Now You See It is pretty similar to
Filmento’s. The audience who watches
these videos have a interest in films and
must watch them a lot. Now You See It
videos highest view count is over 8 million
and they have 917k subscribers. This is
quite a popular YouTube channel the
majority of the audience will be those who
love films and follow their channel,
however other views might come from
people who are only interested in a certain
film they’re doing about.
Age
The audience age range for Now You See It
videos are audiences ages between early
20s to mid 30s. This is because the types of
videos they do are analysis videos which
more appeal to the older audience than
the younger ones. Also the videos they
base the film on can be a mature film not
meant for younger audiences so they
wouldn’t know the film they are talking
about. Audiences in their early 20s and mid
30s seem to be more interested in analysis
film videos.
Gender
Now You See It videos are mainly
aimed at the male audience.
Stereotypically the Male audience
have more interest in films than
Females do. Because Now You See It
videos are mainly based on movies
and analysing them their main
audience would be male. However it
also depends on what type of film
they do, such as if it was a video on
a film that’s more aimed at the
female audience then the female
view rating would go up.
Social Status
Based off my research for the
Baby Driver film I think the
audience social status would
be Lower middle class as they
are the majority of people
who watch films. Based off
this because Now You See It
videos are about movies
more people from the social
class C1 would watch them
type of videos as they are the
ones who take more interest
in them.
Observation
From my research I have
found that the audience for
my project will mainly be
male as well as between the
ages of early 20s and mid
30s. I can appeal to my
audience more by knowing
who exactly I am aiming at so
I can use more topics in my
project that would aim more
to them.
5. Secondary Audience research
Action films
Psychographic
The psychographic for action films are for those who
seek excitement and thrills when they watch a movie.
Action films can mainly aim at reformers, however
because most action films especially superhero movies
are so popular and big at the box office it is also aimed
for the mainstreamers as well, depending on the
content that can be in the film, such as superheroes
which comes under the action genre of film. Action
films are usually very fast paced and filled with chases
and car scenes, some audiences don’t necessarily care
about the story in the film only the fight scenes, such
as the mission impossible films, although good movies
each film is repetitive in storytelling. However the
audience mainly watch the film for the action scenes
which is what the films are known for.
Age
The age that action films mainly target are audiences
ages 15-40. Teenagers have more of a appeal to
action movies due to the burst of adrenaline they get
from watching them, also teenagers mostly watch
them for action packed scenes as it’s considered
“cool” to like those things at that age. This taste in
film genre continues into adulthood and can grow to
be more appreciative of them. However once they
reach the age of 40 the appeal and hype to action
films dies down which is why the primary audience of
action films is mainly aimed at the younger
generation.
Gender
Action films are mainly targeted at the male
audience as stereotypically they like more ‘violent’
and ‘adrenaline enthused’ films. Action films also
cast males as they’re protagonist rather than females
as it appeals to the males audience more as they can
relate to them. When they do have a action film that
has a female protagonist some of them present her
as a ’Mary sue’ making them completely flawless and
unbeatable, which can put the viewer off as it
becomes unrealistic and not as enjoyable to watch.
This is because you want a character to relate to and
have character development and making them
flawless from the get go can be annoying to watch
and you don’t feel any attachment to the character.
Although this can be used on male characters to they
mainly do it to females for ‘female empowerment’
and this is what can put the male audience off action
films that has a female protagonist like that.
Social Status
The social status for the majority who
watch action films are C1- Lower
middle class. 33% out of the UK
population and between the four social
grades watch action movies which is
the majority of the percent. This s a
trend from my other research which is
shown that C1 is the majority who
actually go and watch films at the
cinema. C1 is the most popular class
who watches action films because the
majority of the population in the UK is
from C1.Also the way they spend their
free time the majority most likely go to
the cinema often which increases the
percent who goes.
Observation
From my research I have found that
my target audience will be mainly
male, and I will be aiming for
audiences ages 15-40 years old.
Because I am doing about a action
film, I need to keep my video exciting
for them to watch, as from my
psychographic I have found that my
audience seeks excitement and thrill
so I need to keep them entertained
throughout my video, including action
scenes from my chosen film and
always engaging them.
6. Secondary Research Observation
Similarities/Trends throughout my research
- From my research I have conducted I have found that from my Psychographics most of the product aim at the
mainstream audience as well as reformers.
- I have also found that all my products have a similar audience age range aiming from teenagers ages 15 to adults ages
late 30s. This helps me get a better understanding of who I am targeting my project at as all my product I have
researched are similar to what I am basing my project on.
- The social class has stayed the same throughout all my researched products, with the majority of who takes interest
in them being Middle Lower Class. This helps me know what type of audience I am catering for I my project and what
will appeal to them.
- The main gender that my products appeal to are the male audience, this helps me know what specific parts of my
topic I will include in my project as I want it to appeal to them.
- All my research I have done all the audience responses are pretty much the same which helps me get a clearer look
on who I need to aim my project at, as well as what to include to keep them interested and what I need to talk about.
7. Primary Audience research
Observation
From my survey, the first question I asked was how old my respondents were. The majority of the replies said they were 17 with the exception
of one 18 year old. I have received 7 responses from my audience which will help me get a trend of who exactly I am aiming my project at.
What this says about my audience
From the replies I have received it shows that my audience are teenagers, this relates back to the secondary audience research I have done
with the products mainly aiming at the younger audiences starting at ages 15. This also gives me a better idea as to what my audience
would like and what appeals to them which I can include in my project.
How will your product appeal to this audience?
Because I now know the majority of my audience will be teenagers, I have a better understanding of what to include to appeal to them.
Because I am doing about the film ‘Baby Driver’ which is a action film, from my secondary research I have found that teenagers watch
action films for the adrenaline and excitement. Knowing this I will include lots of scenes from the film that feature action sequences or
tense, exciting scenes that I know will engage my age audience and keep them entertained with the video and focused on it.
8. Primary Audience research
Observation
The second question I asked in my survey was what gender my respondents are, I have found the majority of them are
female with 71.43% and 28.57% being male. I feel like these results won’t be strictly accurate to my audience for my
project as from my secondary research the main audience they aimed their products at were male. As proven by the
results that the main consumer is male for the type of project I am planning. I mainly sent this survey to the female
audience which is why it’s slightly inaccurate to what the audience will be for my project.
What this says about my audience
This says that my audience will be mainly female, however as shown from my secondary audience their main audience is male
which I plan to cater for more than females. However I’m not aiming more project just at males but rather at both genders. I
feel like the audience will like a video that can appeal to both genders taste.
How will your product appeal to the audience?
I plan to include scenes from my chosen film and topics to discus that will appeal to the gender of my audience. Mainly action scenes and I
will also include the films soundtrack in my project as well. I feel like both male and female audiences will like the music involved which will
appeal to them as well as my chosen scenes I will include.
9. Primary Audience research
Observation
For my third question I asked if my audience is interested in movie analysis videos. I have found that they all are
interested in those types of videos with the majority saying yes, however there is 2 who said it depends on what the
analysis video is about such as what film they are analyzing.
What this says about my audience
This shows that all my audience I have sent this survey to are interested in film analysis videos which is what I am
planning to make project on. Some have said it depends on the film so only if it’s a film they have watched or are
interested in which is why for one of my questions on my survey I have asked if they have watched Baby Driver
which is the film I am basing my video on.
How will your product appeal to the audience?
Because I have found that my audience all like film analysis videos, that is the type of video I plan to make. I plan
to choose a scene from the film Baby Driver and analyze that scene showing my audience what’s so great about it
and compare it to other scenes in the film and explain why I have chosen it as my favorite scene
10. Primary Audience research
Observation
For my fourth question I asked my audience if they have seen the film Baby Driver with the majority saying they
have. One person has said they haven't and another has said they have heard of it. This helps me know who
has seen the film and if it’s a popular choice to talk about for my project which from my results it is.
What this says about my audience
This shows that the majority of my audience has seen Baby Driver so when I make a video about it
they will know what I am talking about and what is going on as well as having an understanding
about who the characters are. This helps me knowing that my audience has seen the film and I
have chosen one that appeals to them.
How will your product appeal to audience?
Because I know that the majority of my audience have seen the film, I can choose the best scene from
the movie and talk about it which would hopefully interest them and I have asked them in my next
question what their favorite scene is it can give me a better idea on what scene to choose.
11. Primary Audience research
Observation
For my fifth question I asked my audience if they have watched Baby Driver then what was there favourite scene. I have found
that the majority have said the foot chase scene while others have said the car chases. The most popular answer was the foot
chase, which is the scene I plan on talking about in my video.
What this says about my audience
This shows that my audience all has the same taste in what scenes they like, most of them has said the foot
chase scene which shows that they like fast paced action with a good soundtrack behind it. Knowing that this
is their favorite scene will help me search what makes it appeal to people and why they have chosen that
scene out of all the scenes in the film as their favorite.
How will your product appeal to the audience?
From the majority who have chosen the same scene as their favorite scene in the film I plan on doing my
video specifically about that scene as it’s so popular. I will also include clips of the other scenes mentioned
such as the car chases but the main focus will be on the foot chase scene.
12. Primary audience research
Observation
For my sixth question I asked my audience what appeals to them most in films, the majority have said
that the story is what appeals to them and then one person has said the characters while the others
actors.
What this says about my audience
This shows that most of my audience watches films mainly for story, while some watch for the
characters and actors. This helps me know what appeals to my audience when they watch a film and
it will help me for when I do my video because then I can talk about the story of the film as part of
my analysis.
How will your product appeal to the audience?
It will appeal to my audience because now I know that when they watch a film they mainly do it for the story I can
include talking about the story of Baby Driver as part of my analysis video and explain why it’s a good story and what
techniques they use to make it like it is.
13. Primary audience research
Observation
For my final question I asked my audience what their favorite movie is, this will help me know what type of genre film my audience likes.
All of the answers are different, however most appear to be action films which is what genre my film is in. I do have one person who said
their favorite film is Baby Driver which is what I am doing my project on.
What this says about my audience
This shows that my audience all have different tastes in films, for example one person said avengers while another said the dark knight, these are both
superhero action films yet completely different style. Avengers is a more family fun film to watch and not very serious whereas the dark knight is a much darker
film which is more serious, has much less CGI and feels more realistic. This shows the difference in my audience and what types of films appeal to them
How will your product appeal to the audience?
Knowing my audiences favorite films have helped me figure out what type of genre they like, with most the films mention being
action the film I have chosen is also action. This will help appeal to the audience as they like action films and my focus of the video
is going to be on a action scene.
14. Baby Driver
Soundtrack
The reason they use music so often in Baby Driver is all to do with
Baby. His mother used music as a fantasy escape to get away from
her abusive relationship with Baby’s Dad. Baby uses it similarity to
get away from the bad things in the world which is why when he’s on
a car chase he always listens to music to get away from it all.
Escaping to the music world is a way to get away from the world of
crime for Baby and he tries to rationalize it by escaping. Baby’s music
fantasy allows him to cast himself as the antihero of his own crime
thriller, sound tracked to his own personal songs it allows him to see
his actions as something other than villainous and lets him escape his
life of crime. The use of Baby’s soundtrack in the film is also used to
create a beat and rhythm that matches everything that Baby is doing
from driving to running everything is perfectly in time and in beat.
Theme
Baby Driver is packed with different genres there’s drama, romance
and action all in one film and every genre is executed perfectly and
fits in with movie. However I think the main theme of Baby Driver is
choice. This theme is repeated throughout the film and the theme
focuses on all different characters. For example Baby needs to
make a choice, continue being a getaway driver or get out, hand
himself in or continue to getaway. Doc needs to choose whether he
should help Baby or leave him. Debora needs to choose whether
she should go with Baby or stay at the Diner. All the characters are
faced with choice and it’s a continuous running theme throughout
the film letting each character get faced with a difficult decision.
Cinematography
Baby Driver has some of the best cinematography in film, every scene is
perfectly shot easily matching the pace of each scene making the
audience feel the rush and adrenaline that the characters are feeling.
When there’s a song playing during a scene the film is shot like a music
video each step is matched with the beat of the song, I even think it’s
shot better than actual Music videos are. Not only is the film shot in
beat and rhythm with everything that’s happening in the scene but
there’s small details that if you pay attention the film you will see.
When Baby is walking to go and get coffee, you can see the lyrics of the
song appear subtly in the place Baby is walking, whether its in graffiti or
in a shop window this again makes the scene feel like a music video
without even trying and is masterfully shot.
Editing Story
Baby Driver is heavily influenced by its soundtrack, every piece of action is built
around the chosen song. The editor of the film, Paul Machliss, actually edited
the movie on set which normally editors usually do it in a studio with all the
editing equipment. Throughout the movie Wright (the director) and Machliss
made sure that every time a scene skipped it was always on beat with the song.
Wrights intention was to make the movie feel like a music video however not a
musical. Edgar Wright also has a unique editing style and technique where he
does close-up quick-cuts of action moments. Even when the character isn’t
doing anything exciting he makes sure to make it seem exciting to help to
continuously engage the audience.
The film is about a young get away driver, Baby, who works for a
crime boss called Doc. Baby was stricken with severe tinnitus when
he was young so he uses different soundtracks to aid him in his work
and everyday life. When Baby is asked to help a young thief called
Bats, things begin to fall apart. Struck between a choice to do what’s
right or to continue in the life of crime, the story shows his struggle
to get out of the crime life and run away with his love interest
Debora.
15. Subject Research
Baby driver Foot Chase scene
Soundtrack
The song used in the foot chase scene is called ’Focus’ by Hocus
pocus. Edgar Wright chose to use this track due to it’s stop-start
intervals and its constant change in Tempo. Wright said you can
let the scene dictate itself according to the track. When the fast
guitar is playing, Baby is running. When there’s a yodeling
breakdown, Baby is stopping to catch his breath. Then comes in
another guitar solo, Baby starts running again. Then there’s
another breakdown, so Baby is then hiding in a mall. Then
comes an accordion breakdown so now he’s breaking into a car.
Each section of the song fits in time and beat with what’s
happening in the scene. Usually with chase scenes they create
music to fit with what's happening in the scene, one of the
things that makes this scene so great is that Wright used an
existing track from the 70s and made it fit perfectly with a 21st
century chase scene.Script
The stunts in the foot chase are timed exactly on beat and in
time with ‘Focus’ the song playing throughout the chase. In
the script for Baby driver there is barely any dialogue with the
characters, the majority of the script is actually just the lyrics
to the soundtrack that is going to be used in each scene. In
the foot chase scene he matches all of Baby's stunts in time
with the music, he sections each part of the song such as
‘Guitar builds’ then describes Baby running fast and out of
control. ‘Drum solo’ Baby hides in clumps of trees and stops
to catch his breath. ’Vocal section. Crazy Yodeling. Hammond
Organ. Baby is looking around. This scene is purely based on
what is happening in the song, every action such as Baby
stopping to catch his breath is in time with Yodeling which
shows its him trying to gain his bearings as well as his breath.
Then guitar hits and Baby is back running again matching the
speed and tempo of the song.
Filming
Baby drivers foot chase scene was actually going to be cut from the
film because the studio couldn’t afford the cost of having more
shooting days to do it. However, Edgar Wright was so determined to
make sure that the scene go in the film that he deferred a portion of
hid directing fee to make sure the scene was complete and to get extra
days to do it. After Wright finished the scene he claimed it was his
favorite scene out of the entire film. When filming and editing chase
scenes like this Wright uses lots of quick cuts to improve the pace of
the scene and makes sure when it cuts to a different angle or different
scene in the film that its in time with the music. This makes the scene
more suspenseful and exhilarating to watch making you feel the rush
of adrenaline Baby is feeling in the scene.
16. Subject Research
Hot Fuzz Comparison chase scene
Filming techniques
In the Hot Fuzz chase scene when the chase is built up with low angle
tracking shots, the shots aren’t fixed but they stay focused on the
character while camera is jogging with them. They use different
camera angles when we get more into the chase scene, getting a trio
of shots from the front, side and rear which shows the perspective
between the chaser and the chase. Because the film is a comedy, this
chase scene isn’t necessarily serious as throughout they throw
cliché’s in their such as stereotypical car bonnet slide. The throw
some more slapstick comedy in the chase scene as well such as the
most memorable part of the scene which is when Nicholas jumps
over the fences followed by Danny who rather than jumping falls
through them. This switches the tone of the scene from a quite
serious chase back to comedy and lightheartedness and it fits
perfectly with how it switches between those two tones. When he
falls through the fence as well the guitar that was playing in the
background comes to a sudden stop, which is another example of
slapstick comedy.
Similarities in Chase scenes
Both Baby Driver and Hot fuzz was directed and written by Edgar
Wright, so both chase scenes have some very similar style in the
way they were shot and presented. The way the two scene are
edited together using quick cuts to show the person getting chased
and the chaser are very similar to each other. Wright uses the quick
cut techniques to speed up the pace and tension of the scene,
although the way its done in Hot Fuzz is more for comedic value it
still gives you the same adrenaline rush as it does in Baby Driver.
Another similarity is in both chase scene they have the classic
Bonnet slide where both Baby and the Sargent slide across the
bonnet of a car, this is known as a cliché in chase scene but Wright
fits it in perfectly in both scenes.
Differences in chase scenes
Although both written and directed by the same director, Baby Driver and
Hot Fuzz are two very different films. There is some similarities between
the way things are shot but the chase scenes are also very different. Hot
Fuzz is known more for being more of a slapstick comedy, being very over
the top and exaggerated at times which is what makes the film stand out
for what it is. Baby Driver is much more serious compared to Hot Fuzz
although it has some comedic scenes in the film it still keeps itself serious.
That’s also the case with the two chase scenes Baby Divers chase scene is
much more serious as he is the one being chased and it’s his desperation
to get out of the situation that sets itself apart from Hot Fuzz. With Hot
Fuzz it’s the sergeant chasing a shop lifter and the way its shot doing
exaggerated close ups on their faces as well as being stopped by obstacles
such as mums is so much different in the tone and style as Baby’s. Baby’s
chase is also based off the soundtrack going on in the background, with
Sargent's there’s sound effects going on in the chase such as swooshing
sounds when there heads turn. Which again sets apart the two scenes Hot
Fuzz is very over the top and comedic while Baby's is more of a serious
scramble for a way out.

Find some resources, log them, read them and write something about them.
