David Hume s Theory of Ethics Essay
David Hume is considered to be one of the big three British empiricists, along with Hobbes and
Locke, and lived near the end of the Enlightenment. The Catholic Church was losing its control over
science, politics and philosophy and the Aristotelian world view was being swallowed up by a more
mechanistic viewpoint. Galileo found the theory provided by Copernicus to be correct, that our earth
was not the center of everything, but the celestial bodies including the earth circled the sun.
Mathematicians abounded. Pascal developed the first mechanical calculator and Newtonian physics
was breaking new ground. Not even the arts were immune. Within the same era Mary Shelley
authored Frankenstein: or the Modern Prometheus. The main theme for this ... Show more content on

The latter being the kind that he uses as a naturalist.
David Hume s most famous quote is Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can
never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them. To understand the implications of this
quote as a basis for an ethical theory you need to understand that every other ethical theory attempts to
derive how things ought to be from how things are. The jumps from matters of fact and relations of
ideas perceived by reason, to value judgments perceived by emotions, are made in Hume s opinion
with no logical reason. There is nothing contradictory in the statement the sun will not rise in the
morning, it is not unreasonable. We only feel that it ought to continue rising in the morning. The
scientific method uses inductive reasoning to construct a hypothesis and Hume does not contend that it
should not be used. It has been useful thus far in making predictions and it is the only tool that we
have for understanding the world around us.
David Hume s ethical theory sits between philosophy and modern day psychology. He uses the
empirical method to study the natural tendencies of human beings to engage their emotions, and in our
emotions is where morality could be understood best. One must remember

A Cream Cracker Under the Settee. Alan Bennett
The melancholy of life, death and old age, are one of the many issues dealt with, in Alan Bennett s
heart rending tale. It tells the story of an isolated, fragile, elderly woman, who feels ensnared in a
modernised society in which she strives for her sovereignty and prominence. In a culture where the
old are forgotten, neglected and depicted as useless. A Cream Cracker Under The Settee seems to be
the perfect title of the play as the double entendre epitomizes this remarkably. In addition, another
reason for the dramatic piece being called A Cream Cracker Under The Settee . Is because a cream
cracker was indeed found under a settee in the play, this makes the title rather ironic. As the title in
many ways also symbolises the character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

interferences within her strictly controlled life as an adversary to challenge if possible demolish the
remaining control the protagonist withholds within her life.

Literary Analysis Of The Stranger By Charles Camus
While studying many works of literature, several themes present themselves in in depth readings, such
as the theme of otherness in Albert Camus The Guest . This story centers on a character, an outsider,
who is trying to fit into the society in the story. It may not be the fact that the stranger is different in
looks, culture, or language like it is in this short story, but it is just the fact that they are not the same,
which causes them to be the outsider and fulfill the role of the otherness. As we look through the short
story The Guest , and through the short novel The Stranger , we can see that Albert Camus is working
towards the idea of Otherness and how it can affect societies where the otherness is seen as
undesirable.
Otherness, as defined by Merriam Webster, is the quality or fact of being different. In The Guest and
in The Stranger we are able to see the use of Otherness . The pattern of otherness and trying to find
common ground between the characters is prevalent in Camus works set in Algerian French control.
Daru and the prisoner are the complete opposites of each other culturally, linguistically, and ethnically;
they are set up to be each other s other from the beginning, and yet, they seem to be able to find some
kind of common ground. I am interested in why Camus made it so that these two men, who are
strangers in the beginning, can be seen as comrades near the ending. I will compare these two works
by Camus and find out the purpose of his

Analysis Of Understanding Sam Shepard
Sam Shepard is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated dramatists in American literature.
Characterized by stylized, complex language, lyrical and elaborate dialogue with very little context or
explanations, his style involves revealing secrets, opening hidden areas of one s identity, and a
continuous search for conclusions to satisfy (Author Last name for Understanding Sam Shepard, 1).
The effect of his surreal techniques, open ended structure (where anything can happen) and
exploration of complex worlds and characters makes him one of America s most creative, thoughtful,
and challenging playwrights. In True West, Sam Shepard explores a complex world where
confrontation between brothers, attitudes toward life, and the myth of the ... Show more content on

Shepard uses foreshadowing early on giving us a hint that there will be a role reversal when Lee
comments to Austin saying, I ll just turn myself right inside out. I could be just like you then, huh? and
then a few lines later telling Austin, I always wondered what d be like to be you (P. 886 887). Austin
and Lee s role reversal becomes even clearer in the beginning of scene seven. While Lee is working
on the screenplay, a drunk Austin states that Saul Kimmer thinks Austin and Lee are the same person.
This seems virtually impossible at first as the brothers look nothing alike, but Saul does not mistake
them by their appearance, as he mistakes them based on their function in the creative process. One
thing to note is that Saul Kimmer and the opportunity he represents is the catalyst for this
transformation between Austin and Lee. Thinking about the beginning of this story, Austin was a
confident individual and somewhat accomplished. However, when Kimmer agrees to produce Lee s
projects instead of Austin s, an inward conflict is created. Austin completely loses that sense of
superiority he once showed. We can see Austin s transformation as he loses that connection he had
with his inner self. Austin seems to doubt his abilities when he says, There is nothing real down here,
least of all me (p. 902) After Austin s transformation begins, we see him searching for his identity as
he repeats the personal pronoun I repeatedly

My Beautiful Laundrette By Hanif Kureishi And Directed By...
My Beautiful Laundrette, a 1985 film written by Hanif Kureishi and directed by Stephen Frears, was
heavily shaped by the surrounding social and economic climate taking place under Thatcherism. In the
Thatcher era, an emphasis was put upon the return to Victorian values including the encouragement of
the self made man, meaning that great importance was put upon individual interest as a opposed to
communal ones. The government privatized industries that were formally nationalized. Inevitably, the
gap between the upper and lower class increased.
Under the conservative rule of Thatcher, other morals were encouraged such as the concept of a
nuclear family, the preservation of British culture, ignoring or denouncing homosexuality, and ...

Considered to be social realist films, they reflected and acknowledged issues in present society and
criticized Thatcherism. In 1982, Channel 4 was launched, a network that financed low budget
independent films and encouraged cultural diversity, giving voices to those who had continuously
been ignored. With this in mind, it should be obvious that the majority of these films had an extreme
opposition to Thatcher and the principles encouraged under her influence. My Beautiful Laundrette
was among the numerous films produced by channel 4. Shot with 16mm film, typically used for home
videos or documentaries, this only increased the sense of realism portrayed. The film had been made
so cheaply and quickly and out of love, it was never expected to reach any sort of commercial success
or be viewed amongst a wide audience (Kureishi 1992) Their success helped illustrate that it was
possible to make films about non traditional subjects and reach large audiences (1992). Being
produced by channel 4 and representing minority audiences, one can deduce that the core features of
the film were to challenge ideologies under the rule of Thatcher, which both Stephen Frears and
Krusichi have been critical of. Frears has stated, She has divided the country between north and south,
between the employed and unemployed, between the rich and the poor, between the people who ve got

As you become a registered nurse you can specialized in a variety of fields. One of the many fields
you can choose is to become a Community Health Nurse. As Community Health Nurse you will

one of the eight types of herpes viruses known to cause human infection and it is found all over the
world. Varicella zoster virus infection causes two clinically distinct forms of disease: varicella

Analysis Of The Painting Moving Day
The painting Moving day from 1967 seems to be about a black family who is moving to another
country. When a person who is different moves to another place, with other people, it s harder to
become a part of the people who is already living there. That s because they don t know anybody at
all. In this painting the black kids have a cat, and the white kids have a dog. I think that is a detail with
a lot of meaning. The cat and the dog are different, and they sometimes don t like each other because
of that. Dogs and cats can be friends too, but sometimes the dog can be (avstøtende), and not accept
the cats for who they are. That is exactly the same as black and white people do to each other.

Venomous snakes are known as rich sources of toxins among venomous animal species. Snakes
venoms are complex chemical mixtures of pharmacologically active compounds such as enzymes,

Flannery O Connor s A Good Man
Flannery O Connor has written multiple books about the two topics she knows best, southern living
and the Catholic religion. Most of her writings focus on humanity s biggest question. What is required
to attain salvation? Growing up as a devout Roman Catholic, O Connor is able to shed some light into
a question that even scholars in the Christian faith are unable to answer. Although O Connor has
multiple books, the one that answers the many questions surrounding salvation best, is A Good Man is
Hard to Find. Throughout A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O Connor provides her readers with
multiple allegories that allude to her belief that humans are nothing more than fallen, depraved
creatures capable of redemption and salvation. In the beginning of the story, O Connor introduces a
somewhat typical family preparing for vacation with their grandmother. During their preparation, the
family illustrates just how disjointed and manipulative they truly are. In fact, in an attempt to get her
own way, the grandmother tries to scare the family into going to Tennessee with the news of a killer
who escaped prison. Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and
headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people .(575)
Before the family gets too far in their awkward journey, O Connor tips off her readers of the eventual
future for the family. Foreshadowing is used when the family passes an old burial ground with six,

Bonjour. Aujourd hui je vais expliquer la Révolution Haïtienne et ses complexités. Prior to 1790,
Haitian society was broken up into 3 groups: the slaves, the gens de coleur (or free non whites), and
the whites. The whites were equal in the eyes of the law, but they were divided by class. Meanwhile,
the free non whites, or gens de coleur, faced discrimination both in the law and in society. Despite this,
there was still a wide range of social diversity. Unlike other colonies held by the Spanish and the
British, social status and race were not inherently connected. There certainly were wealthy gens de
coleur and poor whites. The slaves worked in the plantations under both the gens de coleur and the
whites. Following the 1789 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Spanish and French intervention in Haiti thus allowed the slaves to attain their goals. The military
maneuvers in Cap Français were by far the most significant of the war, as they gave the slaves the
independence that they sought and moved the slaves into a prominent position, the whites having fled
and the gens de coleur somewhat weakened by their losses. In addition, the decision of Sonthonax to
free the slaves brough Toussaint L Ouverture to change sides and defeat the Spanish. This cemented
Toussaint s position as leader of the revolution. After the intervention by the French and Spanish, there
was also foreign intervention by Haiti by the British. At the invitation of the white planters of Haiti,
the British invaded the island in the Fifth Great Caribbean War with France. The British king thought
that Haiti would be an easy island to take. The whites turned over the towns and cities that they
controlled in the South and West Provinces and, come June 1794, the British had control of them.
However slave revolts (instigated by French soldiers) on other Caribbean islands prevented the British
from using their full might in acquiring Haiti and the British were eventually defeated by Toussaint in
a war of attrition in 1798. Following the defeat of the British, the whites, gens de coleur, and the
slaves began fighting again. Eventually, the slaves emerged victorious. At this point, Toussaint had
achieved total victory in Haiti. Unfortunately, the wars of

Several researchers suggest that America s foundation was created on racism and discrimination. In
history it shows that racism began with white Anglo Saxons taking over Native American lands, and
then eventually bringing in slavery of African people; which ultimately led to white wealth. White
people have ultimately flourished by making minority groups inferior to them. Joe R. Feagin s (2014)

Unjust enrichment is defined as circumstances that give rise to the obligation of restitution, that is,
receiving and retention of property, money, or benefits which in justice and equality belong together
(11). Black American s were subjected and forced to work so that the wealth would continue to grow
amongst the white population. President Abraham Lincoln suggested in his Second Inaugural Address
in 1865 that the war was caused by the greed and wealth of the white Americans. White American s
taken all of the wealth and prospered as much as possible which led the black Americans to poverty
and oppression that is still seen today. Unjust impoverishment is a way to describe the conditions of
those who suffer such oppression (11). Since the poverty and oppression that was created by white
Americans, black Americans sill struggle today. For instance, Black full time male workers earn less
per week than white full time male workers, in most of the country s major occupational groups (18).
Unjust impoverishment is continuously seen in today s society not only through the wage gap but in
housing and education as well. Many white Americans have succeeded through unjust enrichment not

Land Destruction By Tourist Attractions
Land Destruction by Tourist Attraction Beaches are used as a tourist attraction. Coral reefs are an
example of marine life endangered by this idea. Though coral reefs are beautiful to view, boats on top
of the coral can destroy and hit the reefs. This is a big problem because coral reefs are home to
millions of marine life. According to the book, Destroying the Oceans, coral reefs are home to one
quarter of Earth s marine animals and plants . With that, many habits are also destroyed. Sea turtles are
not only affected by pollution, but they are also affected by tourist attraction. On September 5 in Costa
Rica, a group of tourists prevented sea turtles from nesting along the coastline. The sea turtles are
protected by the Ostional Wildlife Refuge. Due to the high volume of tourists of that day, the refuge
was unable to prevent the disaster from happening. Some tourists touched the turtles, others stood on
top of the nests, and parents placed their children on top of the turtles to take photographs (L. Arias).

The Steady Decline of Salmon Populations
From the San Francisco Bay to streams and rivers of Oregon, salmon populations have been steadily
decreasing over the past two decades but more rapidly within recent years. In general, fish populations
in the Pacific Northwest region have always fluctuated, but the overall trend continues on a downward
slope to extinction. While natural phenomena such as flooding and predators of the food chain do
affect salmon populations, human activity poses the greatest threat by far. The four main reasons of
salmon plummeting are as followed: Harvest, Hatcheries, Hydropower, and Habitat. It s clear that
water ecosystems and management of human activity threaten salmon as a whole. Whether it s a bay,
river or stream whatever body of water that contains salmon should be subject to ethics that guide our
actions as a part of achieving a better overall environment. Salmon have a truly incredible life cycle.
Like all fish, salmon spawn from female eggs and then go on to develop into alevin, which is a term
for newly hatched fish. First off, they derive nourishment from the yolk sac from where the salmon are
born. Once the sac has been absorbed, the fry, or baby fish, then emerges from the river gravel and
starts the search for food. Fry instinctively deal with the river currents and learn to swim together as a
school right away. Anywhere from a couple days to two years old, fry will continue to live in fresh
water until they start the next, smolting, phase. Smolting is a

The Philippine-American War
This was America s first true colonial war as a world power. After defeating Spain in Cuba and in the
Philippines in 1898, the U.S. purchased the Philippines, Puerto Rico and several other islands from the

had no intention of becoming a colony of another imperialist power. In February of 1899, fighting
broke out between the occupying American Army and the Filipino forces. The basic causes of the
Philippine American War can be found in the U.S. government s quest for an overseas empire and the
desire of the Filipino people for freedom.
Following the surrender of the Spanish colonial government in the Philippines to American military

Theodore Roosevelt declared it over in July 1902, even though fighting continued in outlying islands
for another decade. To keep the brutal nature of the war hidden from the American public, the
McKinley and Roosevelt administrations engaged in censorship, official denial, media spin,
impressive generalities, and intimidation of war critics. Many citizens nonetheless challenged the

Manuel Puig
The Kiss of The Spider Woman by Manuel Puig is centered on gender.
The notions of gender are Masculinity, and Femininity. They are argued by Manuel Puig as he
reverses the traditional ideas of male and female using Valentin and Molina, in order argue against the
idea that women were weak and men were strong. With the use of Valentin, a protester who carries all
masculine traits used in order to symbolize the traditional societal ideology of manhood and
masculinity. Also, he creates Molina, a homosexual put in prison for corrupting minors, in order to
portray the traditional female.
However, throughout the novel Puig deconstructs these roles in order to show the true persona of both
Valentin and Molina.
For instance, when Valentin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That being said, he has a feministic view of society. Moreover he views his relationship with Valentin
rather well as he considers himself to be the submissive female that transforms into the manipulator,
that tricks Valentin into eating the prison food, so that he can intentionally take care of him. However
Puig is making the reader realize that Molina is enduring an internal struggle. The struggle is that
Molina is stuck between telling the Warden the information that he is trying to get from Valentin, yet
insisting that Valentin tell him nothing of his political life. These combinations create the angst within
the character and the ultimate suspense of the piece as a whole. Perhaps both Valentin and Molina are
seeking to escape by explaining the movies they recall. The movies that Molina tells Valentin reveals
so much about Molina as he tends to cry each time he goes into the romantic part of the documentaries
because Molina lacks love in his life as he is trapped within himself. However when he offers his
body, so that is he free from this entrapment is when he makes love with Valentin. This shows us how
similar Molina s persona is to that of a woman. The similar trends between Molina and a woman is
best reflected when he talks about the love story of Leni. Leni betrays her own country because she
lacks love from a man. Leni turns into a powerful woman when she backstabs the soldier that was
once on her side.

My Experiences After Attending The Practice Of Public...
Reflective Assignment
This paper discusses my experiences after attending the Practice of Public Health Leadership (PPHL)
subject in 2015, reflecting on important lessons learnt, the relevance to my work and the support
required for my improvement.
When I enrolled in this PPHL, I was not sure that I will get the best out of the subject due to previous
experiences of attending theoretical leadership trainings. However, at the end of the subject, I was
challenged, groomed, humbled and inspired as a leader. The subject has helped more to bring a lot out
of myself, stimulated the urge for personal authenticity and an appreciation of the power of
vulnerability in leadership. Through personal interactions with other students and presenters as well as
the group activities, I have realised that the success of the team depends on recognising each other s
strengths and complementing on the weaknesses. In addition, I have learnt that effective leadership
depends on team work, incorporating people with different skills and abilities. I have learnt the
importance of personal reflection and meditation in leadership. Furthermore, taking time to know
myself or who I am, has been one of the great lessons from this subject. It has enabled me to focus on
the roles of a leader instead of striving to do everything myself as the case before. In addition, learning
the skills of gaining the trust of the people you are leading as well as inspiring them was a remarkable
lesson.

This article covers and extensive over view of Albert Ellis and the creation of Rational Emotive
Behavior therapy. When covering the history of REBT, Daniel David discusses how RBET made Ellis
an originator of the cognitive revolution . David also highlights that the theory has changed since it
was first created in 1957 as Rational Therapy, but still follows the ABC model activating events,
beliefs, and consequences. When explaining the practice of REBT, David highlights that the theory
can be used for individual, group, and family/couple therapy. Finally, David discusses how there are
several different uses for REBT and it s major contributions to the psychological field.

The Release Of India From The British Grip Of Power Seemed
The release of India from the British grip of power seemed to be a historic victory, but it soon posed
problems for the inhabitants the subcontinent. Ever since the formation of Pakistan and India, the East
Pakistani population saw a cultural divide between themselves and their Western counterpart.
Although there were numerous other factors that had contributed to this difference, language was the
one critical catalyst for Bengali self determination. The formation of Bangladeshi nationalism began
with the Bengali Language movement, which was of key significance because it unified the Bengali
people under the banner of nationalism. Historical events leading up to the Bangladesh Liberation
War, such as the Indo Pakistan War and Operation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the goal of avoiding religious bloodbath, what seemed to be a simple, quick fix solution for state
separation posed a series of problems for Pakistan. The problem lay in the fact that there were two
completely different nations that were forced to coalesce into one state. This dilemma can be seen
with the fundamental differences between West and East Pakistan. Although East Pakistan contained a
little over half (54.8%) of the total Pakistani population, it only took up about an eighth (15.1%) of the
total land area. However, the disparities between the East and West do not end with land distribution.
In both foreign aid and per capita income, West Pakistan dominated their Eastern counterpart. This
economic disparity persisted during the ten years of Pakistani independence, and the per capita income
actually worsened over a ten year period (between 1950 1960). The offices of the central Pakistani
government were all located in the west, and recruitment for civil, military, and administrative
positions were predominantly given to West Pakistanis. However, the key difference between West
and East Pakistan lay in culture. Each respective region contained two spheres of peoples that were
vastly different in regards to attitudes and ambitions. The West was a land of mountains and deserts,
and its people mimicked the solidity and stability of its geographic features. The West Pakistanis were
described to be energetic, and had fierce respect for government,

Occupational Therapy And Eating Disorder Recovery
I struggled to find an occupational therapist to interview for this assignment. Without knowing the big
movers in the field of occupational therapy and eating disorder recovery, I felt I was grasping at
nothing. I did actively pursue many authors of papers that focused on OT and ED but received no
response. This was regardless of my mode of communication, zero phone calls back and emails
unresponsive. I decided to change my approach to this and stepped outside of the field of OT. This is
when I found a professional willing to speak with me.
I interviewed Miranda Phelps from Waterville, Maine. Phelps is a clinical psychologist who has been
practicing since 1998. I found the contact information for Phelps through the eating disorder treatment
team directory from the Eating Disorders Association of Maine. We sat down for the interview on
March 2nd at her Waterville office. I chose to pursue this interview with Phelps because I perceived
her to be client centered and she mentioned using various approaches that I am interested in
implementing when I m working with clients that would like to utilize them. These approaches
included reflective listening, narrative therapy and mind body perspectives. Upon arrival I learned that
though Dr. Phelps is on the ED treatment team for the Waterville area, she has not had much
experience in treating individuals with ED but that this was a common thread among all practitioners
in the state of Maine. My first question to Miranda was why

Beauty Pageants Objectify Women
Many people (most of which are women believe that) beauty pageants objectify women . The
definition of objectify is: to present as an object. What s really happening is more similar to
glorification. The definition of glorification is: to make something or someone appear better than it
actually is. Beauty pageants do not objectify women because the contestants are not judged solely on
physical appearance, the contestants are being glorified not objectified and all contestants pass a
screening to make sure they fulfill all criteria beforehand. One of the most common reasons that make
beauty pageants objectifying is that the contestants are judged solely on their physical appearance.

Many people believe that beauty pageants are objectifying since they often give young people the
wrong definition of beauty, however it is just showing them a glorified version. Glorification is still a
problem not it is not as bad as objectification. However some people like to glorify themselves either
in real life, or by using photoshop and other online editors to glorify themselves digitally. Many
people believe thats it is objectifying for each contestant to undergo a screening before they enter to
make sure that they fulfil all criteria beforehand, However this is to make sure that it is fair for all
contestants. It is also to make they all meet the standards for the pageant. This is not objectification
because it is mandatory for all contestants and if they contestants refuse to do the screening they will
not be able to participate. Hopefully after reading this text one will know that beauty pageants do not
objectify women. What people believe to be objectification is more likely to be a case of glorification.

Welcome to Harmony: Population 300;
The sign read as Daryl gently eased the bike up in to the empty pharmacy parking lot and shut off the

a clothing store, a local doctors office, and a post office. That was about it. There wasn t much going
on for the town of Harmony, past or present.
He looked around to make sure walkers hadn t heard him pull in. The last thing he needed was to be

street. It stopped and sniffed the air, spotting him. It began shambling towards him, its arms

He raised his crossbow up to his shoulder, scanning each aisle, taking no chances on a stray walker

He grabbed a plastic bag from the front register and quickly started piling supplies into his bag.
Shockingly, he found everything he needed, except for the antibiotics and the inhaler, in the first aisle.
It seemed when the world had went to hell, no one had been overly concerned with cough syrup and
acetamenophin...at least not in this town.
He was heading towards the back of the pharmacy when a silver and brown wrapper caught his eye.
A Hershey bar.
He grabbed it up and tossed it into the bag.
She would need something to make her feel better when she woke up. Besides, women loved
chocolate didn t they? Or at least, that s what he had always heard.
The next aisle he came to was the health and beauty aid aisle. He quickly went down the shelves,
filling his bag with shampoo, body wash, lotion, and wet wipes... for her. Mainly because he wanted
to. She never got shit and he was tired of it. And it seemed that the woman had a fondness for wet
wipes. He threw one more pack in...for good measure.
He walked to the back of the store and held his flashlight up to scan the shelves.
Vicadin, Darvocet, Loracet, Oxycontin,Tramadol, Azirthomycin...
Bingo.

How Did George Washington Carver Impact The Food Industry
How did George Washington Carver impacted the food industry? Craver was an African American

the creation of peanut butter and using this to make up to 300 products. This includes soap, ink, candy,
etc. In addition to his success in the food industry, he also has an interesting background story.
George Washington Carver had many struggles in his life that had impacted his work ethic and made

Brazilian Culture
II. Characteristics of the Brazilian Culture The culture of Brazil contains many characteristics that

The eight dimensions of communication as pointed out by James Neuliep are present in this culture.
According to Neuliep, the eight dimensions of communication are process, dynamic, interactive
transactive, symbolic, intentional, contextual, ubiquitous, and cultural (Neuliep, 2015, p. 11). The
unique cultural characteristics, contexts, values and codes in the Brazilian culture will be further

Children are often expected to remain living with their parents until marriage, after which they do not
move far away. Remaining close to family members is very important to Brazilians. According to
Margolis, maintaining regular contact with relatives and friends back home through visits and phone
calls has a high priority among Brazilians, (Margolis, 2004, p. 34). Much like in the United States,
frequent family gatherings are expected. In addition, Brazil also scores above average in regards to its
power distance and uncertainty avoidance. According to Hofstede et al., the common Brazilian
societal culture is clearly hierarchical and structured, (Hofstede, Garibaldi de Hilal, Malvezzi, Tanure,
Vinken, 2010, p. 347). In terms of this cultural dimension Brazil fails to identify itself in favor of one
over the other. As a whole, Brazil shows elements of both collectivism and individualism. With this, it
is worth noting that the regions and microcultures within Brazil vary greatly between each other,
which causes the entire nation to be considered very middle of the road. The southern and
southeastern regions of Brazil shows characteristics of individualism while the regions of the north
and northeast lean towards collectivism. One can attribute this to the south being more urban while the
north being more rural

Hormones, Heredity, and Human Behavior

Why do people behave the way they do? What makes us tick? While our environment molds some of
who we are, much more comes from heredity and hormones. Genes passed on to us from our parents
make up heredity, and glands throughout the body produce hormones. As generations progress, new
psychological and behavioral traits are earned and learned. This paper will explain hormones and the
endocrine system, glands associated with the endocrine system, behavior genetics, and evolutionary
psychology.

Hypothyroidism often causes a person to sleep a lot, but the person is still tired. The parathyroids are
located within the thyroid, secrete parathormone, and controls levels of calcium and phosphates in the
body. The parathyroids are also involved with controlling excitability levels (Morris and Maisto,
2002).
The pancreas is located between the stomach and small intestine, and secretes insulin and glucagon to
balance blood sugar levels in the body. When the pancreas does not work properly, a person may be
diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, which is more commonly known simply as Diabetes (Morris and
Maisto, 2002). People with diabetes suffer from extreme thirst, fatigue, lack of or increased appetite,
and a myriad of other symptoms if their condition is not controlled properly with diet, exercise, and
medications (if needed) (Steadman s Concise Medical Dictionary, 2001).
The gonads are the male and female reproductive organs, the testes (males) and ovaries (females). The
testes and ovaries produce androgens (testosterone) and estrogens, these hormones affect
aggressiveness, mood, and sexual interest and behavior. Higher levels of these hormones have been
shown to promote aggressiveness in both sexes (Morris and Maisto, 2002).
The last glands are the adrenal glands, which are located above the kidneys, and have an inner core
and an outer layer. The inner core is called the adrenal medulla, and the outer layer is known as the
adrenal cortex.

The Communication Model Of Interpersonal Communication
Passing another student on the way to class and gesturing with a friendly wave, interacting with a
server in a local restaurant, or discussing ideas and pop culture with a roommate all seem like entirely
unrelated, daily interactions that happen in a typical college student s day. However, each daily
interaction, whether in the life of a college student or other person, follows a specific pattern of order
that helps people to perceive and interact with the environment and other individual around them. This
process, known as the communication model, is an important facet of human interaction that helps to
explain the processes involved in communicating with people and that helps to reveal important
details about effective interpersonal communication.
The communication model consists of eight different parts, which as they apply to every interpersonal
reaction, are often referred to as universals. Perhaps, the first and most important universal of
communication is the message, or the idea one tries to communicate to another in a conversation or
interaction. As every interaction hinges around a central message, all the other elements of the
communication model revolve around the sending and/or receiving of the message itself. Therefore,
the individual who sends a message to another is known as the sender, while the individual who
receives the message is referred to as the receiver. For example, when alarm clock pierces the early
morning silence, it becomes the sender, communicating a message to the person who hears its shrill
tones, the receiver, that he or she should wake up.
However, the communication process does not end with the reception of the message. Oftentimes, the
receiver responds to the sender of the message, which is called feedback, and prompts the continuation
of the communication process. Continuing with the previous example, after a sleeping person hears an
alarm clock, he or she responds to its message most often by letting out an audible gasp of dread or by
forcefully pressing the snooze button, which prompts the alarm to issue a second message, either of
momentary silence or of continued noise. In this way, both the sender and receiver transmit messages
to one another, playing both roles in

  • 2. David Hume s Theory of Ethics Essay David Hume is considered to be one of the big three British empiricists, along with Hobbes and Locke, and lived near the end of the Enlightenment. The Catholic Church was losing its control over science, politics and philosophy and the Aristotelian world view was being swallowed up by a more mechanistic viewpoint. Galileo found the theory provided by Copernicus to be correct, that our earth was not the center of everything, but the celestial bodies including the earth circled the sun. Mathematicians abounded. Pascal developed the first mechanical calculator and Newtonian physics was breaking new ground. Not even the arts were immune. Within the same era Mary Shelley authored Frankenstein: or the Modern Prometheus. The main theme for this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The latter being the kind that he uses as a naturalist. David Hume s most famous quote is Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them. To understand the implications of this quote as a basis for an ethical theory you need to understand that every other ethical theory attempts to derive how things ought to be from how things are. The jumps from matters of fact and relations of ideas perceived by reason, to value judgments perceived by emotions, are made in Hume s opinion with no logical reason. There is nothing contradictory in the statement the sun will not rise in the morning, it is not unreasonable. We only feel that it ought to continue rising in the morning. The scientific method uses inductive reasoning to construct a hypothesis and Hume does not contend that it should not be used. It has been useful thus far in making predictions and it is the only tool that we have for understanding the world around us. David Hume s ethical theory sits between philosophy and modern day psychology. He uses the empirical method to study the natural tendencies of human beings to engage their emotions, and in our emotions is where morality could be understood best. One must remember ... • 3. A Cream Cracker Under the Settee. Alan Bennett The melancholy of life, death and old age, are one of the many issues dealt with, in Alan Bennett s heart rending tale. It tells the story of an isolated, fragile, elderly woman, who feels ensnared in a modernised society in which she strives for her sovereignty and prominence. In a culture where the old are forgotten, neglected and depicted as useless. A Cream Cracker Under The Settee seems to be the perfect title of the play as the double entendre epitomizes this remarkably. In addition, another reason for the dramatic piece being called A Cream Cracker Under The Settee . Is because a cream cracker was indeed found under a settee in the play, this makes the title rather ironic. As the title in many ways also symbolises the character ... Doris initial reminisces of the past, begin with thoughts like many of the elderly, of the golden days through coloured spectacles, in which the protagonist ruefully looks back upon the era where people were clean and the streets were clean and it was all clean. The present for Doris lacks what she values and sees as important, and does not at all appreciate what the present has to offer that is, a home help; Zulema, and the prospect of care in an old people s home. Doris perceives these interferences within her strictly controlled life as an adversary to challenge if possible demolish the remaining control the protagonist withholds within her life. ... • 4. Literary Analysis Of The Stranger By Charles Camus While studying many works of literature, several themes present themselves in in depth readings, such as the theme of otherness in Albert Camus The Guest . This story centers on a character, an outsider, who is trying to fit into the society in the story. It may not be the fact that the stranger is different in looks, culture, or language like it is in this short story, but it is just the fact that they are not the same, which causes them to be the outsider and fulfill the role of the otherness. As we look through the short story The Guest , and through the short novel The Stranger , we can see that Albert Camus is working towards the idea of Otherness and how it can affect societies where the otherness is seen as undesirable. Otherness, as defined by Merriam Webster, is the quality or fact of being different. In The Guest and in The Stranger we are able to see the use of Otherness . The pattern of otherness and trying to find common ground between the characters is prevalent in Camus works set in Algerian French control. Daru and the prisoner are the complete opposites of each other culturally, linguistically, and ethnically; they are set up to be each other s other from the beginning, and yet, they seem to be able to find some kind of common ground. I am interested in why Camus made it so that these two men, who are strangers in the beginning, can be seen as comrades near the ending. I will compare these two works by Camus and find out the purpose of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of Understanding Sam Shepard Sam Shepard is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated dramatists in American literature. Characterized by stylized, complex language, lyrical and elaborate dialogue with very little context or explanations, his style involves revealing secrets, opening hidden areas of one s identity, and a continuous search for conclusions to satisfy (Author Last name for Understanding Sam Shepard, 1). The effect of his surreal techniques, open ended structure (where anything can happen) and exploration of complex worlds and characters makes him one of America s most creative, thoughtful, and challenging playwrights. In True West, Sam Shepard explores a complex world where confrontation between brothers, attitudes toward life, and the myth of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shepard uses foreshadowing early on giving us a hint that there will be a role reversal when Lee comments to Austin saying, I ll just turn myself right inside out. I could be just like you then, huh? and then a few lines later telling Austin, I always wondered what d be like to be you (P. 886 887). Austin and Lee s role reversal becomes even clearer in the beginning of scene seven. While Lee is working on the screenplay, a drunk Austin states that Saul Kimmer thinks Austin and Lee are the same person. This seems virtually impossible at first as the brothers look nothing alike, but Saul does not mistake them by their appearance, as he mistakes them based on their function in the creative process. One thing to note is that Saul Kimmer and the opportunity he represents is the catalyst for this transformation between Austin and Lee. Thinking about the beginning of this story, Austin was a confident individual and somewhat accomplished. However, when Kimmer agrees to produce Lee s projects instead of Austin s, an inward conflict is created. Austin completely loses that sense of superiority he once showed. We can see Austin s transformation as he loses that connection he had with his inner self. Austin seems to doubt his abilities when he says, There is nothing real down here, least of all me (p. 902) After Austin s transformation begins, we see him searching for his identity as he repeats the personal pronoun I repeatedly ... • 6. My Beautiful Laundrette By Hanif Kureishi And Directed By... My Beautiful Laundrette, a 1985 film written by Hanif Kureishi and directed by Stephen Frears, was heavily shaped by the surrounding social and economic climate taking place under Thatcherism. In the Thatcher era, an emphasis was put upon the return to Victorian values including the encouragement of the self made man, meaning that great importance was put upon individual interest as a opposed to communal ones. The government privatized industries that were formally nationalized. Inevitably, the gap between the upper and lower class increased. Under the conservative rule of Thatcher, other morals were encouraged such as the concept of a nuclear family, the preservation of British culture, ignoring or denouncing homosexuality, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Considered to be social realist films, they reflected and acknowledged issues in present society and criticized Thatcherism. In 1982, Channel 4 was launched, a network that financed low budget independent films and encouraged cultural diversity, giving voices to those who had continuously been ignored. With this in mind, it should be obvious that the majority of these films had an extreme opposition to Thatcher and the principles encouraged under her influence. My Beautiful Laundrette was among the numerous films produced by channel 4. Shot with 16mm film, typically used for home videos or documentaries, this only increased the sense of realism portrayed. The film had been made so cheaply and quickly and out of love, it was never expected to reach any sort of commercial success or be viewed amongst a wide audience (Kureishi 1992) Their success helped illustrate that it was possible to make films about non traditional subjects and reach large audiences (1992). Being produced by channel 4 and representing minority audiences, one can deduce that the core features of the film were to challenge ideologies under the rule of Thatcher, which both Stephen Frears and Krusichi have been critical of. Frears has stated, She has divided the country between north and south, between the employed and unemployed, between the rich and the poor, between the people who ve got ... In this painting the black kids have a cat, and the white kids have a dog. I think that is a detail with a lot of meaning. The cat and the dog are different, and they sometimes don t like each other because of that. Most of her writings focus on humanity s biggest question. What is required to attain salvation? Growing up as a devout Roman Catholic, O Connor is able to shed some light into a question that even scholars in the Christian faith are unable to answer. Although O Connor has multiple books, the one that answers the many questions surrounding salvation best, is A Good Man is Hard to Find. Throughout A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O Connor provides her readers with multiple allegories that allude to her belief that humans are nothing more than fallen, depraved creatures capable of redemption and salvation. In the beginning of the story, O Connor introduces a somewhat typical family preparing for vacation with their grandmother. During their preparation, the family illustrates just how disjointed and manipulative they truly are. In fact, in an attempt to get her own way, the grandmother tries to scare the family into going to Tennessee with the news of a killer who escaped prison. The whites were equal in the eyes of the law, but they were divided by class. Meanwhile, the free non whites, or gens de coleur, faced discrimination both in the law and in society. Despite this, there was still a wide range of social diversity. Unlike other colonies held by the Spanish and the British, social status and race were not inherently connected. The military maneuvers in Cap Français were by far the most significant of the war, as they gave the slaves the independence that they sought and moved the slaves into a prominent position, the whites having fled and the gens de coleur somewhat weakened by their losses. In addition, the decision of Sonthonax to free the slaves brough Toussaint L Ouverture to change sides and defeat the Spanish. This cemented Toussaint s position as leader of the revolution. After the intervention by the French and Spanish, there was also foreign intervention by Haiti by the British. At the invitation of the white planters of Haiti, the British invaded the island in the Fifth Great Caribbean War with France. The British king thought that Haiti would be an easy island to take. The whites turned over the towns and cities that they controlled in the South and West Provinces and, come June 1794, the British had control of them. However slave revolts (instigated by French soldiers) on other Caribbean islands prevented the British from using their full might in acquiring Haiti and the British were eventually defeated by Toussaint in a war of attrition in 1798. Following the defeat of the British, the whites, gens de coleur, and the slaves began fighting again. Eventually, the slaves emerged victorious. In general, fish populations in the Pacific Northwest region have always fluctuated, but the overall trend continues on a downward slope to extinction. While natural phenomena such as flooding and predators of the food chain do affect salmon populations, human activity poses the greatest threat by far. The four main reasons of salmon plummeting are as followed: Harvest, Hatcheries, Hydropower, and Habitat. It s clear that water ecosystems and management of human activity threaten salmon as a whole. Whether it s a bay, river or stream whatever body of water that contains salmon should be subject to ethics that guide our actions as a part of achieving a better overall environment. The struggle is that Molina is stuck between telling the Warden the information that he is trying to get from Valentin, yet insisting that Valentin tell him nothing of his political life. With the goal of avoiding religious bloodbath, what seemed to be a simple, quick fix solution for state separation posed a series of problems for Pakistan. The problem lay in the fact that there were two completely different nations that were forced to coalesce into one state. This dilemma can be seen with the fundamental differences between West and East Pakistan. Although East Pakistan contained a little over half (54.8%) of the total Pakistani population, it only took up about an eighth (15.1%) of the total land area. However, the disparities between the East and West do not end with land distribution. In both foreign aid and per capita income, West Pakistan dominated their Eastern counterpart. This economic disparity persisted during the ten years of Pakistani independence, and the per capita income actually worsened over a ten year period (between 1950 1960). The offices of the central Pakistani government were all located in the west, and recruitment for civil, military, and administrative positions were predominantly given to West Pakistanis. From what he could see of the small town he had found, there was a pharmacy, a grocery store, a clothing store, a local doctors office, and a post office. That was about it. There wasn t much going on for the town of Harmony, past or present. He looked around to make sure walkers hadn t heard him pull in. The last thing he needed was to be caught in the middle of a herd. He saw one come around the corner, shuffling aimlessly down the street. It stopped and sniffed the air, spotting him. It began shambling towards him, its arms outstretched, mouth open and growling, sensing fresh meat. Before it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All was clear. He grabbed a plastic bag from the front register and quickly started piling supplies into his bag. Shockingly, he found everything he needed, except for the antibiotics and the inhaler, in the first aisle. It seemed when the world had went to hell, no one had been overly concerned with cough syrup and acetamenophin...at least not in this town. He was heading towards the back of the pharmacy when a silver and brown wrapper caught his eye. A Hershey bar. He grabbed it up and tossed it into the bag. She would need something to make her feel better when she woke up. Besides, women loved chocolate didn t they? Or at least, that s what he had always heard. The next aisle he came to was the health and beauty aid aisle. He quickly went down the shelves, filling his bag with shampoo, body wash, lotion, and wet wipes... for her. Mainly because he wanted to. She never got shit and he was tired of it. And it seemed that the woman had a fondness for wet wipes. He threw one more pack in...for good measure. He walked to the back of the store and held his flashlight up to scan the shelves.

  • 36. Brazilian Culture II. Characteristics of the Brazilian Culture The culture of Brazil contains many characteristics that make it unique throughout the world. Like any culture, Brazilian communication is shaped by culture. The eight dimensions of communication as pointed out by James Neuliep are present in this culture. According to Neuliep, the eight dimensions of communication are process, dynamic, interactive transactive, symbolic, intentional, contextual, ubiquitous, and cultural (Neuliep, 2015, p. 11). The unique cultural characteristics, contexts, values and codes in the Brazilian culture will be further discussed in detail in this analysis. According to Margolis, maintaining regular contact with relatives and friends back home through visits and phone calls has a high priority among Brazilians, (Margolis, 2004, p. 34). Much like in the United States, frequent family gatherings are expected. In addition, Brazil also scores above average in regards to its power distance and uncertainty avoidance. According to Hofstede et al., the common Brazilian societal culture is clearly hierarchical and structured, (Hofstede, Garibaldi de Hilal, Malvezzi, Tanure, Vinken, 2010, p. 347). In terms of this cultural dimension Brazil fails to identify itself in favor of one over the other. As a whole, Brazil shows elements of both collectivism and individualism. With this, it is worth noting that the regions and microcultures within Brazil vary greatly between each other, which causes the entire nation to be considered very middle of the road. The southern and southeastern regions of Brazil shows characteristics of individualism while the regions of the north and northeast lean towards collectivism. One can attribute this to the south being more urban while the north being more rural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While our environment molds some of who we are, much more comes from heredity and hormones. Genes passed on to us from our parents make up heredity, and glands throughout the body produce hormones. As generations progress, new psychological and behavioral traits are earned and learned. This paper will explain hormones and the endocrine system, glands associated with the endocrine system, behavior genetics, and evolutionary psychology. The endocrine system is the system of the body in which releases hormones into the bloodstream. The hormones then cause different reactions within the body, and these reactions shape ... The parathyroids are located within the thyroid, secrete parathormone, and controls levels of calcium and phosphates in the body. The parathyroids are also involved with controlling excitability levels (Morris and Maisto, 2002). The pancreas is located between the stomach and small intestine, and secretes insulin and glucagon to balance blood sugar levels in the body. When the pancreas does not work properly, a person may be diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, which is more commonly known simply as Diabetes (Morris and Maisto, 2002). People with diabetes suffer from extreme thirst, fatigue, lack of or increased appetite, and a myriad of other symptoms if their condition is not controlled properly with diet, exercise, and medications (if needed) (Steadman s Concise Medical Dictionary, 2001). The gonads are the male and female reproductive organs, the testes (males) and ovaries (females). The testes and ovaries produce androgens (testosterone) and estrogens, these hormones affect aggressiveness, mood, and sexual interest and behavior. Higher levels of these hormones have been shown to promote aggressiveness in both sexes (Morris and Maisto, 2002). It is also rewarding to know users are on your website and benefiting from it. Programming increases the knowledge that a developer has and this is likely to help with their confidence within the area. Being able to program has high employability attraction so their knowledge can benefit them and help them earn money. The CPU (central processing unit) in a computer system works by instruction which must be in binary style coding (binary is made up of 1s and 0s). The issue with binary is the complication for humans to comprehend binary and so the programming that takes place in the present day, is carried out using symbolic languages with the use of English like statements. • 39. The Communication Model Of Interpersonal Communication Passing another student on the way to class and gesturing with a friendly wave, interacting with a server in a local restaurant, or discussing ideas and pop culture with a roommate all seem like entirely unrelated, daily interactions that happen in a typical college student s day. However, each daily interaction, whether in the life of a college student or other person, follows a specific pattern of order that helps people to perceive and interact with the environment and other individual around them. This process, known as the communication model, is an important facet of human interaction that helps to explain the processes involved in communicating with people and that helps to reveal important details about effective interpersonal communication. The communication model consists of eight different parts, which as they apply to every interpersonal reaction, are often referred to as universals. Perhaps, the first and most important universal of communication is the message, or the idea one tries to communicate to another in a conversation or interaction. As every interaction hinges around a central message, all the other elements of the communication model revolve around the sending and/or receiving of the message itself. Therefore, the individual who sends a message to another is known as the sender, while the individual who receives the message is referred to as the receiver. For example, when alarm clock pierces the early morning silence, it becomes the sender, communicating a message to the person who hears its shrill tones, the receiver, that he or she should wake up. However, the communication process does not end with the reception of the message. Oftentimes, the receiver responds to the sender of the message, which is called feedback, and prompts the continuation of the communication process. Continuing with the previous example, after a sleeping person hears an alarm clock, he or she responds to its message most often by letting out an audible gasp of dread or by forcefully pressing the snooze button, which prompts the alarm to issue a second message, either of momentary silence or of continued noise. In this way, both the sender and receiver transmit messages to one another, playing both roles in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
