In the classic mid century tale this always seemed to be the knight having to slay the dragon.
Young Jim Hawkins had some dragons to slay of his own. Throughout the journey he has to
endure the shenanigans of the pirates. He hears about the mutiny that was going to rise, and the
fights back against them. He uses his wits to avoid being captured, and has to fear for his life.
When aboard the ship he is attacked and is almost murdered by Israel Hands, but he kills him in
self defense. He warns, One more step, Mr. Hands, said I, and I ll blow your brains out! Dead
men don t bite, you know, (113). He does not regret killing him, he knew that Israel Hands was a
diseased man. He would have killed Jim just as he killed one of his shipmates. This endeavor
changed him into a more rugged and hardened person. Not only is he changed from the killing of
Hands, but from the journey itself. He experienced the adventure of sailing, but also witnessed the
rotten life of a pirate. Once he returned he had no interest for any more adventures or treasure.
Although the story is told through the eyes of Jim Hawkins, the story is more about the adventure.
The journey is what changes the character, and the audience gets to witness it. Stevenson wrote
