In Barry Levinson s 1990 film Avalon, we meet a young Russian Jewish Immigrant named Sam
Krichinsky who arrives in America on July 4th, 1914. He is mesmerized by the streaming, bright and
colorful lights of the fireworks that night as he walks through his new neighborhood in Baltimore, an
area called Avalon. Though he does not say it, you can tell by the wonder in his eyes and sense of awe
