Recognition and Reward Paper
CORPORATE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL® MARCH 2006 www.clc.executiveboard.com
LITERATURE KEY FINDINGS Creating an Effective Reward and Recognition Program Key
Finding 1: Approximately 90% of companies maintain some type of reward and recognition program.
The majority of companies use these programs to create a positive work environment, improve
employee morale, and motivate high performance. Research suggests that when designed and
implemented properly, reward and recognition positively affects an organization s bottom line. The

Recently published literature reveals that there are several key components of any effective reward
and recognition program. Multiple authors argue that programs missing any one of these key
components will, at best, fail to engage employees, and at worst alienate employees. In fact, according
to Bob Nelson, the author of 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, some forms of awards can hurt
organizations by promoting a culture of entitlement. Additional research reveals that programs that are
impersonal or reward too few people may alienate employees. These key 14,15,16 components and
case examples of their influence are detailed below: 17 SSMART REWARDS Jim Brintnall, author of

Company Strategies and Goals Reward and recognition programs must connect the needs and
expectations of the workforce with the company s overall goals and strategies. A program that
reinforces important company values and goals will encourage employees to act in line with such
goals and emphasize the importance of achieving these goals. Alternatively, rewards which do not
connect with organizational goals may convey a misleading message and encourage employees to act
in a manner that does not facilitate the

Understanding The Underdog Archetype
The year was 2000 and the Patriots, a team that was 5 11, seemed hopeless in 2001, Their Quarterback
was out and it was looking like another losing season was coming. A scrub came off the bench, a
nobody, a dude that looked weaker then my grandpa. He stepped on the field after a heartbreaking
injury. Then this scrub started doing pretty good, then really good and even leading his team to the
playoffs with a 11 5 record. He somehow made it to the to the Super bowl against one of the greatest
teams and quarterbacks ever. They only lost one game that season. But somehow, some way, they won
by one man. A man who had 198 people picked over him. A backup to a sub par backup. He just won
the super bowl, Tom Brady won the super bowl, and now is one of the greats. At this point in his
career he is the definition of an underdog. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Underdog is a character that is not expected to win but beats someone who s way better than them
or overcomes amazing obstacles. Like in the movie Rudy, Rudy is told time and time again that he
couldn t do it. He has one goal; to play football for Notre Dame but he sucks no matter how much he
tries. By some miracle he makes it and still doesn t play until his last home game at Notre Dame. So
he overcame many obstacles, beat the odds, and played over those who were supposed too be better.
This is another example of the underdog. This is one example of many. The underdog is trying to get
to a point, or beat something that seems almost impossible to beat. By going through training and
obstacles, they beat the crazy goal like Rudy

Antisocial Persoanlity Disorder
Individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) are characterized as being deceitful,
egocentric, and having little regard for rules or the feelings of others (Duggan, 2009). Individuals with
ASPD have been found to be unable to correctly interpret emotional situations; they also experience
negative feelings more often than positive feelings. They are also more likely to experience anger than
fear, which can trigger violent behavior. Individuals with ASPD have a tendency to employ defense
mechanisms that can lead to charm and narcissism (Gawda, 2013). The combination of lack of
emotional insight with these psychopathic qualities can create a dangerous individual. It also makes
psychologists ambivalent about treating these individuals and it can make the treatment process for
even the most dedicated psychologist very challenging. As such, many of these individuals run into
trouble with law enforcement. Half of the population diagnosed with ASPD have arrest records and
half of all male inmates could be diagnosed with ASPD (Duggan, 2009). Duggan determined that 1
6% of the general male population can be diagnosed with ASPD and co morbidity with substance use
is high. He also determined that ASPD is a disorder that is not commonly studied properly; recent
reviews of studies performed on ASPD populations could only identify five experiments that met the
Cochrane criteria for an acceptable randomized controlled trial. Duggan examined whether or not
preventive measures

The Picture Of Dorian Gray Analysis
In the Victorian prose, The Portrait of Dorian Gray explores the idea of duality. The divided self
within the character of Dorian Gray begins with his misunderstanding of his self image, because of the
influence of a portrait. Dorian s fate and transformation connect to the painting, which leads to his
downfall. The painting contains Dorian s moral decline as changes to the picture affects his life.
Through the portrait, he gains an image of himself as an independent individual compared to his
previous characteristics where he followed traditional Victorian standards. The sinful actions of
Dorian Gray demonstrate duality, because of the self image he gains from a portrait allowing him to
live morally free until he redeems himself by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Motivation for Divided Self The motivation for the duality of self in The Portrait of Dorian Gray is the
image of Dorian. The said image in the painting becomes influential to his transformation. The portrait
molds Dorian as each character influences his self identification and destruction. The role of Lord
Henry, for instance, is to establish negative connections to the self image Dorian gains from the
portrait. Inspired by Lord Henry s theories of hedonism and sensual pleasure Dorian begins to
misrecognize his identity and alienates himself from society through sin. The idea of self is a false
illusion, however, and Dorian starts to live a life inspired by sensual pleasure. It is not until the deaths
of the siblings James and Sybil Vane that Dorian realizes the falsity of his beliefs and attempts to
destroy the illusion he created. Control over Duality The portrait changes Dorian s views of his self
image, as he seeks control over his duality depicted through James Vane s death. James death shatters
his self absorbed beliefs as Dorian decides to reform himself by becoming a respectable person, only
to end in failure, as the portrait containing his sinful deeds remains unchanged. The brother to Sybil,
James Vane is a protector of his sibling and in revenge for hurting her, he goes after Dorian, only to
result in deception. Later, James Vane comes back to kill Dorian but is accidently shot by a hunter
during a hunting game. The death of James

The Godfather Comparison
The past few years have been rough for Johnny Depp. In the beginning people absolutely adored Depp
s off the wall, zany performances in films like Edward Scissorhands and Pirates of the Caribbean , but
as time passed audiences grew increasingly weary of a goofy Depp performance. Films like Dark
Shadows , Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , Alice in Wonderland , The Lone Ranger , and most
recently Mortdecai were met with disappointed and backlash. With the dread of his films snowballing
Depp seems to want to return to true performances, and that s precisely what he does in Black Mass .
That is without a doubt going to be the big takeaway from this film, Johnny Depp s hauntingly
diabolical performance as James Whitey Bulger. Although, this isn t as far a departure as some might
believe, he s still got lots of prosthetics on his face and they cause him to be virtually ... Show more

Obviously, people are going to compare this film to either The Godfather or a Martin Scorsese film,
both comparisons are out of place here. Not once does this film feel grand or sleek enough to be a
Scorsese film, and The Godfather is simply an unfair comparison. Does this film measure up to the
greatest gangster film of all time? Of course not, but it does manage to bring a new and refreshing
vitality to the genre, and that s ultimately all that matter.
Director Scott Cooper instantly engulfs the audience in an atmosphere that oozes tension and
suspense. I felt that at any moment someone could snap and kill someone, it s that on the edge feeling
is what a good gangster film should do. You re supposed to feel that way because that s probably how
it really feels in that environment, you never know when you re going to get wacked for saying the

In 1962, the article The Incredible Laser predicts the development of a laser canon and stated that all
lasers are dangerous. This is one of many misconception the public has made of the ideal purpose of
the laser. Most misconception the public has makes on laser is that all lasers, masers, and particle
beam weapons are dangerous. He describes the Ray Gun Myth as purely the stuff of fiction meaning
this is the concept of a beam weapon being small enough to be used as a hand held weapon is not
possible as of right now. The technology is not advanced enough for it to be possible for now. If a so

The song Vincent by Don McLean makes the best connection to van Gogh and his artwork thanks to
several key observations. The other poetic responses to van Gogh s The Starry Night all lacked
enough evidence to convey a well supported message to the reader and were more poorly developed
than Vincent. A careful analysis of van Gogh and Vincent is necessary to see the various literary tools
McLean used to give an accurate and encompassing description of van Gogh and The

On April 26, 2016, a study was performed on van Gogh s The Starry Night based on the similarity

Victor Frankenstein As A Hero
Although some critics view Victor Frankenstein as a Tragic Hero because of his one essential flaw, his
overambitious desire to discover what cannot be known, he is truly a Byronic Hero by definition.
Although Victor is of a higher social class than the average person and his essential flaw triumphs all
of his others, he has a deeply troubled past, struggles with integrity, secludes himself away from
society, and is a willful individual who seeks redemption by carving out his own path. Victor s many,
deep flaws, which often induce the reader to believe that he is actually the antagonist and the Monster
the hero, and ultimate redemption in telling Robert Walton his life s story make him a Byronic Hero.
Although Victor s family was one of the most distinguished of the republic of Geneva and his parents
were possessed by the very spirit of kindness / And indulgence, (Shelley 39) his days were not filled
with happiness. His troubled past started the day Elizabeth caught scarlet fever, delaying his departure
for Ingolstadt. Although Victor s mother, Caroline, was able to cure her, she died in her place. The
destruction of a dear bond by an irreparable evil surely would have caused anyone to suffer, but as
time came, Caroline s death became rather an / Indulgence than a necessity (Shelley 45) to Victor; it
was nothing more than something that delayed his departure for Ingolstadt. Because Victor is in a
situation where he no longer has control, his psyche must carry the burden

Technology Architecture Designed For Safety Related Systems
Author
Weihang Wu and Tim Kelly
Article Summary:
The article highlights an approach to software architecture designed for safety related systems. It talks
about the importance of safety strategy in software architecture design. It addresses three issues to
improve the architecture designs for safety related systems.
Design Techniques: There have been a lot of advancements in software design techniques. There are
many design techniques available but choosing the right for the system is absolute critical. Therefore
this approach fails in demonstrating which design technique needs to be chosen to increase the
protection against failures.
Architectural Patterns: Architectural Patterns or styles consist of components and connectors, which
connect these components based on a set of restrictions, which describe how the components of a
particular kind can be connected. There are a lot of architectural patterns available, which display
different safety patterns. It is recommended to understand the basic design patterns and for creating a
good architecture.
Safety Analysis: There are a number of safety analysis techniques for software design, but there has
been very little analysis on architectural level to support software architecture design. Therefore a
safety analysis approach is needed for software with hardware to characterize the architectural
elements at various architectural levels.
The article talks about strategic tactic to address the above three issues which

Opportunities For Sustainable Building Practices...
Opportunities in renewable energy in tourism Our initial assessment for The Birchwood Hotel down
town St. Petersburg focused on examining key areas for sustainable building practices consistent with
Green Key guidelines. The areas assessed were corporate environmental management, housekeeping,
conference and meeting spaces, food and beverage, engineering and maintenance. Summing up the
condition of each system served as a target for the property owners to make improvements for their
short and long term needs that will align the property s mission and goals to be more in line with
Energy Conservation and Sustainable Business practices. The refurbished property has been able to
achieve its own décor and exclusive identity, but after the assessment was graded, it was only able to
earn one Green Key certification.
Problems Boutique hotels and resorts are independently branded and operated often creating a difficult
situation to achieve the required economies of scale; and in these present hostile economic and
political problems it results in fierce competition amongst other hotels. All give you similar options,
almost identical pricing, and one of a kind experience. This property has been able to achieve adequate
performance when the market was good, but now that things are tougher, they are suffering due to

Digital Credit And Debit Card Fraud Essay
The Problem:
Worldwide credit and debit card fraud resulted in losses amounting to $16.31 billion during the year
2014. The United States has been disproportionately affected by this fraud, due to their lack of
adoption of the EMV Chip security measure. According to the 2012 Nilson Report, American card
issuers lost $3.4 billion and merchants lost another $1.9 billion. America makes credit card fraud easy
for fraudsters, by still relying on cards with magnetic strips which are less secure than EMV Chip
enabled transactions.
Consumer Value
The main sources of value that EMV Chip transactions will provide consumers are their new anti
fraud security features. These features will give the consumer piece of mind that their money, the
banking institution, and the merchant accepting payment are all secure.
An additional value to the consumer of EMV Chip transactions is the ease of enrollment. There is no
difference in enrollment for an EMV Chip card compared to the magnetic stripe card, though new
cards will need to be issued. There is a considerable difference on the individual transaction level
when completing an EMV transaction as the device is now inserted into a reader, as opposed to just
swiped in a machine. The new insertion process is not difficult, but could have a behavioral and
learning curve.
Consumer Reduction in Net Value
When the EMV Chip is inserted into the reader, the card should not be moved or wiggled as this could
greatly reduce the success of

Volkswagen dirties it s hands in emissions scandal
A car is spewing deadly carbon dioxide, forty times more than the car next to you. Piling onto many
recent scandals in Europe, Germany s Volkswagen has cheated emissions tests. The scandal has
sparked enormous stifle across the world and turmoil in the company. The Volkswagen company
started when Adolf Hitler gave the order to have the small middle class car to be produced. VW
produced the Beetle in the 1930s to much of Germany s population. After the end of the third Reich,
Volkswagen spread and became a large job creator in Germany as well as an international brand
(Morning Edition). Volkswagen prioritization of the European market, led them to bet their future on
green tech chips and diesel engines. This is in contrary to the moves of many other car makers, who
are pursuing electric cars in the American market. The American market thought of diesel engines as
secondary and insignificant (Ziegler). The Environmental Protection Agency s Tier ii emissions
standards had high bars for diesel emissions that would be extremely difficult to reach. There was a
heavy burden for Volkswagen s engineers to create a quantum leap in the diesel engine in terms of
emissions and fuel economy. To cut these emissions Volkswagen would need to use an effective but
bulky and expensive system in its cars. However cheating the emissions tests would be fairly easy due
to the lack of

Capital Structure theories
Capital Structure Theories
Capital Structure
Capital Structure is the proportion of debt, preference and equity capitals in the total financing of the
firm s assets. The main objective of financial management is to maximize the value of the equity
shares of the firm. Given this objective, the firm has to choose that financing mix/capital structure that
results in maximizing the wealth of the equity shareholders. Such a capital structure is called as the
optimum capital structure. At the optimum capital structure, the weighted average cost of capital
would be the minimum. The capital structure decision influences the value of the firm through its cost
of capital and can affect the share of the earnings that pertain to the equity ... Show more content on

This approach also says that the overall cost of capital is independent of the degree of leverage.
Features of NOI approach:
1. At all degrees of leverage (debt), the overall capitalization rate would remain constant. For a given
level of Earnings before Interest and Taxes (EBIT), the value of a firm would be equal to EBIT/overall
capitalization rate.
2. The value of equity of a firm can be determined by subtracting the value of debt from the total value
of the firm. This can be denoted as follows:
Value of Equity = Total value of the firm Value of debt
3. Cost of equity increases with every increase in debt and the weighted average cost of capital
(WACC) remains constant. When the debt content in the capital structure increases, it increases the
risk of the firm as well as its shareholders. To compensate for the higher risk involved in investing in
highly levered company, equity holders naturally expect higher returns which in turn increases the cost
of equity capital.
Example:
Let us assume that a firm has an EBIT level of $50,000, cost of debt 10%, the total value of debt
$200,000 and the WACC is 12.5%. Let us find out the total value of the firm and the cost of equity
capital (the equity capitalization rate).

The Shape Memory Effect And Super Elasticity
INTRODUCTION
The Shape Memory Alloys are quite fascinating materials characterised by a Shape Memory effect and
Super elasticity, which ordinary metals and alloys do not have. This unique behaviour was first found
in Au 47.5%Cd alloy in 1951, and was publicised by its discovery in a Ti Ni alloy in 1963. After much
research and development thereafter, shape memory alloys are now being practically used as new
functional alloys for pipe couplings, antennae for cellular phones and various actuators in electrical
appliances, etc. Furthermore, they have attracted keen attention as promising candidate for smart
materials since they function as sensors as well as actuators.
The shape memory effect and super elasticity are based on the diffusion less transformation called
martensitic transformation. The Shape memory effect is a unique property of certain alloys exhibiting
martensitic transformations. Even though the alloy is deformed in low temperature phase, it recovers
its original shape by reverse transformation upon heating to a critical temperature called reverse
transformation temperature. Many other alloys such as In T1, 3, 4 Cu Zn and Cu Al Ni were also
found. The same alloys have another unique property called Super elasticity at a higher temperature,
which is associated with a large (18%) nonlinear recoverable strain upon loading and unloading. Since
these alloys have a unique property in remembering the original shape, having an actuator function
and having

Merchandising
As the Beatles gained momentum throughout Britain, the first hint of merchandising was awakened!
Epstein agreed to let his cousin who ran Weldons of Peckham produce Beatles sweaters with
embrodered badges (basically to fan club members). This partnership helped this firm sell thousands
and thousands of these items. With this success, they established on October 14, 1963 an idea that
NEMS Enterprises Ltd. (authorized by their attorneys Jacobs Sons) would attempt to distribute official
merchandising licenses on the band s behalf.
With the growing interest in the band, Epstein had companies lining up to use The Beatles name and
images on almost everything imaginable. Items discussed ranged from plastic guitars, drums, disc
racks, dolls, scarves, mugs, bath water, wigs, t shirts, and bubble gum. Licorice, empty cans
containing Beatle Breath, badges, kitchen aprons, jigsaw puzzles, crockery, egg cups, plates, clothing
(from John Lennon caps to Ringo Starr socks), chewing gum, baked goods, wallpaper, caps, furniture,
belts and a vast variety of other assorted merchandise was also being dreamed up.
Epstein had an unwritten rule that the band would not directly endorse any product, but through
NEMS Enterprises he would allow licenses to companies who could produce a quality product at a
reasonable price (additionally affixing either a Seltaeb, Stramsact, or NEMS trademark to them). The
truth was that many companies were already selling products without a license (some even with the
misleading word Beetles attached to the items). Ringo said in 1965, anytime you spell beetle with an a
in it we get some money.
The dramatic rise of The Beatles meant that some business deals were hurried along and proper
records weren t always kept, if at all. There were no precise records of which companies were
officially licensed to create Beatles merchandise (Stramsact and Seltaeb granted licenses to pretty
much anybody), and the relaxed nature in which permits were allotted meant that almost every
conceivable product was labeled with The Beatles name or likeness.
Epstein tried the best he could, however, as a band manager he was inexperienced; some say lacked

Analysis Of The Garden Party By Mansfield
The main idea for an interpretation of a deeper meaning of the story, The Garden Party by Mansfield,
is relating life, and death to be held hand in hand. In other words, one day I can live happy and think I
can be eternal but death is always near. I don t usually like to think about death because it can be
something scary and overwhelming. Although in this story, I can see that Mrs. Sheridan is a woman
from a high class society. A family that is concerned about with what other people think and the fact of
just having a blast every time they are able to. When Mrs. Sheridan heard about the death of Mr. Scott
she felt pity for a moment, but continued her party arrangements. In contrast, her daughter, Laura,
seemed more humane because when her mother thought about giving the party s leftovers to her
neighbors, she felt that it was rude. Therefore, I can see that she feels empathy with the death of Mr.
Scott.
One of the themes that I can constantly see in society is economic division. Those divisions can
sometimes be harmful directly and indirectly to society. People from high class society tend to
segregate those who do not compare to them, but not all of high class people can act for pettiness. One
of the specific characteristics which is imparted to a character in this story is humility and empathy. I
believe that in this specific story, Laura has changed along the story in the eyes of the reader since at
the beginning, she was in charge of the set up of the Garden Party,

The Foster Family Character Analysis
Living with family can make life rather complex, especially when dealing with problems, because this
group of people are so close to each other emotionally. It s hard to keep secrets or keep things behind
doors because there s not really a door that can t be opened by everyone. This is especially true with
children and teens going through the ropes of high school. Finding the balance of when a child needs
to be disciplined by the parents and when to let the child be more independent with their problem
solving or even finding a way to have everyone connect to each other while also providing a
comfortable space or bit of a distance from each other can be a hard task for everyone, especially if
there are multiple individuals within the family. This example of a family s interesting dynamics that
come about can be seen in a show called, The Fosters. In this show, the Foster family lives in San
Diego where Stef Foster and Lena Adams (in later seasons being Lena Adams Foster) parent five
children, four of them being foster children and one coming from a previous marriage. The children s
names are Brandon (17yrs old), who is the oldest, Mariana (16) and Jesus (16), who are twins that
were adopted after Stef and Lena got together, and Callie (17) and Jude (13) who are siblings that both
got adopted. Stef is the birth mother of Brandon, coming from a previous relationship with another
charater named Mike. Just like any typical American family with children, Stef and Lena deal

Beyond Lies The Wub Essay
Greatness is a road leading toward the unknown (Charles de Gaulle). This melodramatic, cheesy quote
perfectly describes author, Philip K. Dick s writing in his short story Beyond Lies the Wub. Philip K.
Dick was a unique author that explored an unknown part of science fiction and ultimately created
many award winning and interactive short stories. Beyond Lies the Wub was written in 1952, the same
era of the Cold War. Similar to men who were setting off to fight stalked up on food, clothes and
machinery, Franco, a pragmatic captain in this short story loaded up on live animals before their
departure to Mars. One of the animals is an enormous pig creature known by the natives as a Wub.
The crew later finds out this creature is so intelligent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since Beyond Lies The Wub has multiple unclear meanings and messages, readers may be left
unpleased. However, Dick may have intentionally created this confusion so that each reader has a
unique experience in how they discern the text. One interpretation of Beyond Lies the Wub is that
Franco may have been punished for his wrongdoings. Even though the crew was not fully supportive
and the Wub warned him about killing him, he still slaughtered the innocent animal. Another
interpretation of the text could be hinting that Philip K. Dick was vegetarian and thinks those who
consume meat should be punished. However, Dick s multiple comments throughout the story about
the concern of the crews starvation suggest Franco s intention was to feed the deprived crew. Dick s
common tactic of ending his mysterious, vague short stories is by implementing an adjacent character
who is just as confused as the audience. The story ends very abruptly leaving Peterson torn between
two sides: whether his captain was just trying to feed his crew or was the innocent animal who
deemed himself worthy of living through his knowledge living through the Captain as a punishment.
By Dick ending the story before the audience receives any more information about how Franco is now
the wub and how Peterson reacts, allows the audience to interpret it for themselves. Ultimately we
must ask ourselves, is all the confusion and lack of clarity making Dick s stories truly effective? I
think

Comment: Will there be resources to bring in people from outside the state? This should be discussed
with the hiring manager when creating the hiring plan.

Comment: One person stated that search committee ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Almost no one had the search committee looking for the minimum requirements. There might be a
problem in terms of the experience waiver.
Ella: They look at the job description/org chart and the screening questions. Why can t we have a 90
positing starting from mid August.
Interviewing and Selection:
Candidate and interviews need to be tracked in TAM. Anne has a list of disposition codes that can be
shared.
Anne: Reference checks can be done before selecting finalist. We can use Degreeverify to conduct
credential checking.
Alternate plan: A professional recruiter will replace the search committee and some of the CDO roles
for lower position aHEO and HEa. This plan has not been implemented but may happen in the future.
Michael: Said that the recruiter might be more efficient but bias. He said the committee is there to stop
bias.
Arlene?: The CDO will still certify the pool and there is a lot of diversity among the lower
appointments.
ORD needs to know the human and financial resources of the CDO office if it were to move to this
model.
We probably will not be able to use the recruiter for faculty searches since search committee members
need to look at publications and are more involved in the

The Disasters The Days Of Grace Analysis
In this passage, the author encourages writers to use memories from their childhoods, specifically
from holidays, as material for their writing. Holidays are a good place to start when remembering your
childhood. They are often memorable. People often take pictures, which can also trigger memories.
Remembering a detail about someone or seeing a picture of them can lead to even more memories.
This can help the writer recall another event that is harder to remember, but had a greater impact on
them.
Holidays are often joyful, but can sometimes lead to anger or embarrassment. This is shown by the
quote the disasters, the days of grace . The bittersweetness of the holidays makes good material for
writing. The author mentions those terrible petaled swim caps, the men s awful trunks . This shows
disappointment in her own family. She believes that her family members are clueless and is
embarrassed by them. Additionally, she draws a contrast between her cousins Brownie uniforms and
her own. This exemplifies her belief that people are constantly judging her. Something as minor as an
untidy uniform can set off her low self esteem.
The author says to write down what the grown ups said and did after they d had a couple of dozen
drinks . After drinking, people say things that they usually would have kept to themselves. This can

This sentiment creates pleasant memories and can inspire beautiful pieces of writing (such as The Gift
of the Magi). On the other hand, if something was wrong, for example, if the writer s family was
having financial troubles and couldn t afford a good present, the memory could be bittersweet. The joy
of Christmas combined with the sadness of being unable to afford a good present could also inspire
some very heartfelt

20th Century American Politics
Over the course of the 20th century, the people located in what is now modern day Slovakia
experienced immense political transformation. Before the end of World War I, the Slovakian people
were part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. When the empire dissolved, two republics were formed
creating Czechoslovakia until it too was dismantled by political demonstrations in the 1970s and
1980s. However, this volatile nature settled down when Slovakia became its own independent state in
1993. Though the state is relatively young, it is still an imperative component of the European Union
today and this democracy is seen as functioning tremendously well nowadays. Slovakia s main
political policy tends to focus around cultural issues, which has negatively impacted the nation state
with periods of corruption and minority rights violations. However, since 2002, these concerns started
to turn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Politics is usually characterized by contests for and shifts of power signifying the desire of the people
to place their sovereignty in the hands of responsible leaders. Such leaders devise political manifestos
and promises of institutions to implement the ideal governance that is the people s craving. This
underlies the diversity of political parties, opinions, institutions and other avenues that together define
the longitudinal political climate of a state. Moreover, the differences constitute the myriad of systems
that allow for comparison between countries based on the similarity or distinction of design systems.
This comparison of Intra and inter country systems is the concept of comparative politics. The intra
country comparison uses political calculation elements such as the effective number of political parties
in the nation. In this light, this research presents the comparative politics of

The Party System, Republican Vs. Federalist
Final Exam Part 2 _QC There are several reasons why the two party system, Republican vs.
Federalist, worked so well in the 1790 s. First, when the political parties emerged in the 1790 s it was
evident that their ideologies were vastly different. The Republican Party wanted a representative form
of government that functioned in the interest of the people. This party, led by Thomas Jefferson,
supported a limited central government, with individual states retaining a majority of the control.
Jefferson s vision was for a nation of farmers, and farmers do not need big government to survive.
They feared a large central government would take away the rights of the people. On the other hand,
the Federalist Party, led by Alexander Hamilton, supported a strong central government that would
pursue policies in support of economic growth, which in turn would provide the freedom the people
wanted. Hamilton s followers also supported a diverse economy.1 It is important to note here however,
that both parties knew they would have to become national parties in order to win any elections and
both parties had followers in the north and in the south. There was no sectional divide in the parties.
Second, the Constitution played an important role in the why the two party system worked so well
during this period. The Constitution created a system of government, which distributed power across
three levels of government, so that no one political body had ultimate power. The people

Internment Camps In The Broken Road
The Navajo and Hopi tribes have long lived in an area by the region known as the four corners.
Uranium, oil, gas, and coal all very valuable resources can be found under the grounds where these
tribes have lived. When the white men realized this, they passed a law forcing the relocation of the
Indians. In the film, Broken Road, Florio and Mudd (1985) the narrator stated, The government spent
500 million dollars to partition the land between the Navajo and Hopi tribes. 8,000 Indians were
herded from fort Defiance to Fort Sumner, across the New Mexico border. During this trip, many
would die and the ones who survived found themselves in an internment camp . This lasted until the
tax payers realized they were paying over one million a year to keep these camps going (Florio and
Mudd, 1985). After they realized this, the Indians were released. These people were released with only
two sheep and little compensation (Florio and Mudd, 1985).
This horrific treatment of individuals was brutal and unforgivable. This relates very heavily to another
group of disempowered people, when the Nazis invaded and took all the Jews to concentration camps.
These Nazi camps were based off the Indians internment camps where they were killed or held
hostage in terrible, unlivable environments with little food and forced to do work. In this Broken Road
directed by Florio and Mudd(1985), the narrator Martin Sheenan had mentioned, The Nazi s studied
these Indian internment camps and used them as

Male Hysteria In The 1800s
When the male doctors of the 1800s first introduced the idea of male hysteria, they made great
concessions. The attitudes, actions, and personality traits associated with males during that time period
were so vastly different from the present day. They were thought to be the sole provider, protector,
strong, and self reliant no displays of weakness or submissiveness were allowed. Contradictions
between established physicians and neurologists debated in the medical world whether or not it
existed.
In Hystories: Hysterical Epidemics and Modern Media by Elaine Showalter, she writes that Jean
Martin Charcot, who was also known as the founder of modern neurology , stated that hysteria was
determined by hereditary determinants. By researching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willis, who was known for his part in neurology and psychiatry in the 1600s, focused on a different
body part of the human body the brain. Mind and body met somehow and interacted in and through
the brain and the nervous system, and the animal spirits that Willis viewed as commanding and
controlling the body were powerful agents whose derangement could be invoked to explain all manner
of illness and pathology (Scull 25). The animal spirits would be considered in contemporary day, the
nerve impulses; Willis essentially distances himself from the uterus idea touches on the contemporary
function of the brain. However, as history tends to repeat and cycle around itself and we are led from a
logic explanation to an irrational one. Cecilia Tasca, Mariangela Rapetti, Mauro Giovanni Carta, and
Bianca Fadda who authored Women And Hysteria In The History Of Mental Health wrote about
Joseph Raulin. Roughly translated, Raulin wrote a book in the 1700s titled Vaporus Sex Disorder that
described hysteria as a disease caused by foul air of big cities and unruly social life ; furthermore, he
states that men and women can suffer from this disease, but women are further predisposed for their
natural condition of being lazy and irritable (Cecilia et al. 4). By writing this piece, Raulin further
perpetuates the sexism, stereotypes, gender roles, and classism.

Observation Of Gfrann Zfran Zafar s Murder Trial
The Judge then asked if any panel members had trouble reading, writing, or speaking English. He also
asked if anyone was affected by or taking care of someone with a chronic health issue that interfered
with their ability to serve on a jury, and two members had family undergoing treatment that they cared
for. The doctor previously mentioned was scheduled to be in the Operating room during the trial. After
that, he continued to ask if anyone had nonrefundable travel plans, which several people did, and after
that he asked if anyone had childcare conflicts. There were three single dads in the room unable to
serve for that reason. Lastly, he asked if there was anything that impacted someone s ability to be an
impartial juror that had not been previously discussed. When no one ... Show more content on

Malala Yousafzai (Pashto: ‫یوسفزۍ‬ ‫مالله‬‎

is a Pakistani school pupil and education activist from the town of Mingora in the Swat District of
Pakistan s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. She is known for her education andwomen s
rights activism in the Swat Valley, where the Taliban had at times banned girls from attending school.
In early 2009, at the age of 11 12, Yousafzai wrote a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC detailing
her life under Taliban rule, their attempts to take control of the valley, and her views on promoting
education for girls. The following summer, a New York Times documentary was filmed about her life

Corporation to film a documentary with Malala, to further raise awareness of the situation to the
world. In 2011 and 2012, she secretly wrote articles for the British Broadcasting Corporation detailing
life in an area which was constantly a daily battle between the Taliban and the Pakistani army,
specifically how difficult life was for women just to get education because of the Taliban. The New
York Times saw the stories and were given permission by the British Broadcasting Corporation to film
a documentary with Malala, to further raise awareness of the situation to the world. By this time, the
British government decided to intervene. The British Prime Minister offered and ordered a military
medical evacuation of Malala from Pakistan to the United Kingdom, so she can receive proper
medical treatment for her injuries. The United Arab Emirates also helped by clearing their runway at
Dubai Airport and invited the British convoy to a priority landing there, so they could refuel fully for a
quicker home journey. When she fully recovered, the Taliban said that they would still target her until
they were successful. So, the British government offered her asylum in the United Kingdom, where
she remained under protection of the British government to complete her education. Completing her
education was her strongest wish. She has now founded an organisation called District

Multiple authors argue that programs missing any one of these key components will, at best, fail to engage employees, and at worst alienate employees. In fact, according to Bob Nelson, the author of 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, some forms of awards can hurt organizations by promoting a culture of entitlement. Additional research reveals that programs that are impersonal or reward too few people may alienate employees. Then this scrub started doing pretty good, then really good and even leading his team to the playoffs with a 11 5 record. He somehow made it to the to the Super bowl against one of the greatest teams and quarterbacks ever. They only lost one game that season. But somehow, some way, they won by one man. A man who had 198 people picked over him. A backup to a sub par backup. He just won the super bowl, Tom Brady won the super bowl, and now is one of the greats. At this point in his career he is the definition of an underdog. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Antisocial Persoanlity Disorder Individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) are characterized as being deceitful, egocentric, and having little regard for rules or the feelings of others (Duggan, 2009). Individuals with ASPD have been found to be unable to correctly interpret emotional situations; they also experience negative feelings more often than positive feelings. They are also more likely to experience anger than fear, which can trigger violent behavior. Individuals with ASPD have a tendency to employ defense mechanisms that can lead to charm and narcissism (Gawda, 2013). The combination of lack of emotional insight with these psychopathic qualities can create a dangerous individual. It also makes psychologists ambivalent about treating these individuals and it can make the treatment process for even the most dedicated psychologist very challenging. As such, many of these individuals run into trouble with law enforcement. Half of the population diagnosed with ASPD have arrest records and half of all male inmates could be diagnosed with ASPD (Duggan, 2009). Duggan determined that 1 6% of the general male population can be diagnosed with ASPD and co morbidity with substance use is high. He also determined that ASPD is a disorder that is not commonly studied properly; recent reviews of studies performed on ASPD populations could only identify five experiments that met the Cochrane criteria for an acceptable randomized controlled trial. The divided self within the character of Dorian Gray begins with his misunderstanding of his self image, because of the influence of a portrait. Dorian s fate and transformation connect to the painting, which leads to his downfall. The painting contains Dorian s moral decline as changes to the picture affects his life. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Motivation for Divided Self The motivation for the duality of self in The Portrait of Dorian Gray is the image of Dorian. The said image in the painting becomes influential to his transformation. The portrait molds Dorian as each character influences his self identification and destruction. The role of Lord Henry, for instance, is to establish negative connections to the self image Dorian gains from the portrait. Inspired by Lord Henry s theories of hedonism and sensual pleasure Dorian begins to misrecognize his identity and alienates himself from society through sin. The idea of self is a false illusion, however, and Dorian starts to live a life inspired by sensual pleasure. It is not until the deaths of the siblings James and Sybil Vane that Dorian realizes the falsity of his beliefs and attempts to destroy the illusion he created. Control over Duality The portrait changes Dorian s views of his self image, as he seeks control over his duality depicted through James Vane s death. James death shatters his self absorbed beliefs as Dorian decides to reform himself by becoming a respectable person, only to end in failure, as the portrait containing his sinful deeds remains unchanged. The United States has been disproportionately affected by this fraud, due to their lack of adoption of the EMV Chip security measure. According to the 2012 Nilson Report, American card issuers lost $3.4 billion and merchants lost another $1.9 billion. America makes credit card fraud easy for fraudsters, by still relying on cards with magnetic strips which are less secure than EMV Chip enabled transactions. Consumer Value The main sources of value that EMV Chip transactions will provide consumers are their new anti fraud security features. These features will give the consumer piece of mind that their money, the banking institution, and the merchant accepting payment are all secure. An additional value to the consumer of EMV Chip transactions is the ease of enrollment. There is no difference in enrollment for an EMV Chip card compared to the magnetic stripe card, though new cards will need to be issued. There is a considerable difference on the individual transaction level when completing an EMV transaction as the device is now inserted into a reader, as opposed to just swiped in a machine. Volkswagen Dirties It s Hands Nikhil Kanamarla Mrs. Benzing English 1 Period E May 1st, 2016 Volkswagen dirties it s hands in emissions scandal A car is spewing deadly carbon dioxide, forty times more than the car next to you. Piling onto many recent scandals in Europe, Germany s Volkswagen has cheated emissions tests. The scandal has sparked enormous stifle across the world and turmoil in the company. The Volkswagen company started when Adolf Hitler gave the order to have the small middle class car to be produced. VW produced the Beetle in the 1930s to much of Germany s population. After the end of the third Reich, Volkswagen spread and became a large job creator in Germany as well as an international brand (Morning Edition). Volkswagen prioritization of the European market, led them to bet their future on green tech chips and diesel engines. This is in contrary to the moves of many other car makers, who are pursuing electric cars in the American market. The American market thought of diesel engines as secondary and insignificant (Ziegler). The Environmental Protection Agency s Tier ii emissions standards had high bars for diesel emissions that would be extremely difficult to reach. There was a heavy burden for Volkswagen s engineers to create a quantum leap in the diesel engine in terms of emissions and fuel economy. To cut these emissions Volkswagen would need to use an effective but bulky and expensive system in its cars. However cheating the emissions tests would be fairly easy due to the lack of ... Capital Structure theories Capital Structure Theories Capital Structure Capital Structure is the proportion of debt, preference and equity capitals in the total financing of the firm s assets. The main objective of financial management is to maximize the value of the equity shares of the firm. Given this objective, the firm has to choose that financing mix/capital structure that results in maximizing the wealth of the equity shareholders. Such a capital structure is called as the optimum capital structure. At the optimum capital structure, the weighted average cost of capital would be the minimum. The capital structure decision influences the value of the firm through its cost of capital and can affect the share of the earnings that pertain to the equity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This approach also says that the overall cost of capital is independent of the degree of leverage. Features of NOI approach: 1. At all degrees of leverage (debt), the overall capitalization rate would remain constant. For a given level of Earnings before Interest and Taxes (EBIT), the value of a firm would be equal to EBIT/overall capitalization rate. 2. The value of equity of a firm can be determined by subtracting the value of debt from the total value of the firm. This can be denoted as follows: Value of Equity = Total value of the firm Value of debt 3. Cost of equity increases with every increase in debt and the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) remains constant. When the debt content in the capital structure increases, it increases the risk of the firm as well as its shareholders. To compensate for the higher risk involved in investing in highly levered company, equity holders naturally expect higher returns which in turn increases the cost of equity capital. Example: Let us assume that a firm has an EBIT level of $50,000, cost of debt 10%, the total value of debt $200,000 and the WACC is 12.5%. Let us find out the total value of the firm and the cost of equity capital (the equity capitalization rate). Solution: EBIT ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Shape Memory Effect And Super Elasticity INTRODUCTION The Shape Memory Alloys are quite fascinating materials characterised by a Shape Memory effect and Super elasticity, which ordinary metals and alloys do not have. This unique behaviour was first found in Au 47.5%Cd alloy in 1951, and was publicised by its discovery in a Ti Ni alloy in 1963. After much research and development thereafter, shape memory alloys are now being practically used as new functional alloys for pipe couplings, antennae for cellular phones and various actuators in electrical appliances, etc. Furthermore, they have attracted keen attention as promising candidate for smart materials since they function as sensors as well as actuators. The shape memory effect and super elasticity are based on the diffusion less transformation called martensitic transformation. The Shape memory effect is a unique property of certain alloys exhibiting martensitic transformations. Even though the alloy is deformed in low temperature phase, it recovers its original shape by reverse transformation upon heating to a critical temperature called reverse transformation temperature. Many other alloys such as In T1, 3, 4 Cu Zn and Cu Al Ni were also found. The same alloys have another unique property called Super elasticity at a higher temperature, which is associated with a large (18%) nonlinear recoverable strain upon loading and unloading. Since these alloys have a unique property in remembering the original shape, having an actuator function and having ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Epstein agreed to let his cousin who ran Weldons of Peckham produce Beatles sweaters with embrodered badges (basically to fan club members). This partnership helped this firm sell thousands and thousands of these items. With this success, they established on October 14, 1963 an idea that NEMS Enterprises Ltd. (authorized by their attorneys Jacobs Sons) would attempt to distribute official merchandising licenses on the band s behalf. With the growing interest in the band, Epstein had companies lining up to use The Beatles name and images on almost everything imaginable. Items discussed ranged from plastic guitars, drums, disc racks, dolls, scarves, mugs, bath water, wigs, t shirts, and bubble gum. Licorice, empty cans containing Beatle Breath, badges, kitchen aprons, jigsaw puzzles, crockery, egg cups, plates, clothing (from John Lennon caps to Ringo Starr socks), chewing gum, baked goods, wallpaper, caps, furniture, belts and a vast variety of other assorted merchandise was also being dreamed up. Epstein had an unwritten rule that the band would not directly endorse any product, but through NEMS Enterprises he would allow licenses to companies who could produce a quality product at a reasonable price (additionally affixing either a Seltaeb, Stramsact, or NEMS trademark to them). The truth was that many companies were already selling products without a license (some even with the misleading word Beetles attached to the items). Ringo said in 1965, anytime you spell beetle with an a in it we get some money. The dramatic rise of The Beatles meant that some business deals were hurried along and proper records weren t always kept, if at all. There were no precise records of which companies were officially licensed to create Beatles merchandise (Stramsact and Seltaeb granted licenses to pretty much anybody), and the relaxed nature in which permits were allotted meant that almost every conceivable product was labeled with The Beatles name or likeness. Analysis Of The Garden Party By Mansfield The main idea for an interpretation of a deeper meaning of the story, The Garden Party by Mansfield, is relating life, and death to be held hand in hand. In other words, one day I can live happy and think I can be eternal but death is always near. I don t usually like to think about death because it can be something scary and overwhelming. Although in this story, I can see that Mrs. Sheridan is a woman from a high class society. A family that is concerned about with what other people think and the fact of just having a blast every time they are able to. When Mrs. Sheridan heard about the death of Mr. Scott she felt pity for a moment, but continued her party arrangements. In contrast, her daughter, Laura, seemed more humane because when her mother thought about giving the party s leftovers to her neighbors, she felt that it was rude. Therefore, I can see that she feels empathy with the death of Mr. Scott. One of the themes that I can constantly see in society is economic division. Those divisions can sometimes be harmful directly and indirectly to society. People from high class society tend to segregate those who do not compare to them, but not all of high class people can act for pettiness. One of the specific characteristics which is imparted to a character in this story is humility and empathy. Since Beyond Lies The Wub has multiple unclear meanings and messages, readers may be left unpleased. One interpretation of Beyond Lies the Wub is that Franco may have been punished for his wrongdoings. Even though the crew was not fully supportive and the Wub warned him about killing him, he still slaughtered the innocent animal. Another interpretation of the text could be hinting that Philip K. Dick was vegetarian and thinks those who consume meat should be punished. However, Dick s multiple comments throughout the story about the concern of the crews starvation suggest Franco s intention was to feed the deprived crew. Dick s common tactic of ending his mysterious, vague short stories is by implementing an adjacent character who is just as confused as the audience. The story ends very abruptly leaving Peterson torn between two sides: whether his captain was just trying to feed his crew or was the innocent animal who deemed himself worthy of living through his knowledge living through the Captain as a punishment. By Dick ending the story before the audience receives any more information about how Franco is now the wub and how Peterson reacts, allows the audience to interpret it for themselves. • 26. The Party System, Republican Vs. Federalist Final Exam Part 2 _QC There are several reasons why the two party system, Republican vs. Federalist, worked so well in the 1790 s. First, when the political parties emerged in the 1790 s it was evident that their ideologies were vastly different. The Republican Party wanted a representative form of government that functioned in the interest of the people. This party, led by Thomas Jefferson, supported a limited central government, with individual states retaining a majority of the control. Jefferson s vision was for a nation of farmers, and farmers do not need big government to survive. They feared a large central government would take away the rights of the people. On the other hand, the Federalist Party, led by Alexander Hamilton, supported a strong central government that would pursue policies in support of economic growth, which in turn would provide the freedom the people wanted. Hamilton s followers also supported a diverse economy.1 It is important to note here however, that both parties knew they would have to become national parties in order to win any elections and both parties had followers in the north and in the south. There was no sectional divide in the parties. Second, the Constitution played an important role in the why the two party system worked so well during this period. The Constitution created a system of government, which distributed power across three levels of government, so that no one political body had ultimate power. The people ... • 27. Internment Camps In The Broken Road The Navajo and Hopi tribes have long lived in an area by the region known as the four corners. Uranium, oil, gas, and coal all very valuable resources can be found under the grounds where these tribes have lived. When the white men realized this, they passed a law forcing the relocation of the Indians. In the film, Broken Road, Florio and Mudd (1985) the narrator stated, The government spent 500 million dollars to partition the land between the Navajo and Hopi tribes. 8,000 Indians were herded from fort Defiance to Fort Sumner, across the New Mexico border. During this trip, many would die and the ones who survived found themselves in an internment camp . This lasted until the tax payers realized they were paying over one million a year to keep these camps going (Florio and Mudd, 1985). After they realized this, the Indians were released. These people were released with only two sheep and little compensation (Florio and Mudd, 1985). This horrific treatment of individuals was brutal and unforgivable. This relates very heavily to another group of disempowered people, when the Nazis invaded and took all the Jews to concentration camps. These Nazi camps were based off the Indians internment camps where they were killed or held hostage in terrible, unlivable environments with little food and forced to do work. In this Broken Road directed by Florio and Mudd(1985), the narrator Martin Sheenan had mentioned, The Nazi s studied these Indian internment camps and used them as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Male Hysteria In The 1800s When the male doctors of the 1800s first introduced the idea of male hysteria, they made great concessions. The attitudes, actions, and personality traits associated with males during that time period were so vastly different from the present day. They were thought to be the sole provider, protector, strong, and self reliant no displays of weakness or submissiveness were allowed. Contradictions between established physicians and neurologists debated in the medical world whether or not it existed. In Hystories: Hysterical Epidemics and Modern Media by Elaine Showalter, she writes that Jean Martin Charcot, who was also known as the founder of modern neurology , stated that hysteria was determined by hereditary determinants. By researching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Willis, who was known for his part in neurology and psychiatry in the 1600s, focused on a different body part of the human body the brain. Mind and body met somehow and interacted in and through the brain and the nervous system, and the animal spirits that Willis viewed as commanding and controlling the body were powerful agents whose derangement could be invoked to explain all manner of illness and pathology (Scull 25). The animal spirits would be considered in contemporary day, the nerve impulses; Willis essentially distances himself from the uterus idea touches on the contemporary function of the brain. However, as history tends to repeat and cycle around itself and we are led from a logic explanation to an irrational one. Cecilia Tasca, Mariangela Rapetti, Mauro Giovanni Carta, and Bianca Fadda who authored Women And Hysteria In The History Of Mental Health wrote about Joseph Raulin. Roughly translated, Raulin wrote a book in the 1700s titled Vaporus Sex Disorder that described hysteria as a disease caused by foul air of big cities and unruly social life ; furthermore, he states that men and women can suffer from this disease, but women are further predisposed for their natural condition of being lazy and irritable (Cecilia et al. 4). By writing this piece, Raulin further perpetuates the sexism, stereotypes, gender roles, and classism. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Observation Of Gfrann Zfran Zafar s Murder Trial The Judge then asked if any panel members had trouble reading, writing, or speaking English. He also asked if anyone was affected by or taking care of someone with a chronic health issue that interfered with their ability to serve on a jury, and two members had family undergoing treatment that they cared for. The doctor previously mentioned was scheduled to be in the Operating room during the trial. After that, he continued to ask if anyone had nonrefundable travel plans, which several people did, and after that he asked if anyone had childcare conflicts. There were three single dads in the room unable to serve for that reason. Lastly, he asked if there was anything that impacted someone s ability to be an impartial juror that had not been previously discussed. When no one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
