The document discusses different research methods that could be used when creating a new media product, including primary, secondary, quantitative, and qualitative research. It provides definitions and examples of each method, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Primary research involves collecting one's own data through methods like questionnaires and is more accurate but time-consuming, while secondary research uses already existing data which is quicker but could be outdated. Quantitative research uses statistical data to understand perspectives, but lacks depth, whereas qualitative research explores how people think and feel in more detail but is harder to analyze.

Research methods worksheet (unit 1)
1. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
• To find out if your target audience would buy your product
• To find out how much you could sell your product for
• To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
• To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
Primary research is research
that you have carried out
yourself, it is first hand. One
form of Primary research
would be to create a
questionnaire to hand out to
the public.
Primary research tends to be
more accurate because you
have done the research
yourself and it would not be
out of date.
A disadvantage of Primary
research would be that it is
very time consuming.
Secondary
Secondary research is where
the research has already been
completed, all you need to do
is look for it. One example of
secondary research would be
to look on the internet or
through books.
Secondary research does not
consume as much time and
effort as it has already been
completed.
Secondary research may not
be as accurate as primary
research because it may be
out of date. It may also not
suit the needs of your
product.
Quantitative
Quantitative research is more
logical and data-led approach.
This will then provide what
people think from a statistical
and numerical point of view.
Quantitative research can
gather a large amount
of data that can be easily
organised and manipulated
into reports for analysis.
Quantitative research
methods have a lack of depth
and opinion to their answers,
this means that it is not a
strong source of information.
Qualitative
Qualitative research is based
around how people think and
feel towards your product and
less on numbers and
statistics.
Because this kind of research
is based around people’s
feelings towards your product,
there will be more in depth and
detailed information that is
produced.
Because there are so many
mixed opinions from this
research it is much harder to
generalise and order the
answers, this will make it hard
to find out the bigger
downfalls of your product.
2. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
What research methods did you use when completing the assignments in year 11 (Unit 18 Advertising and Unit
21 Media Project? (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative)
I mainly used secondary research when completing my assignments in year 11, this is because I did not have the
amount of time needed to complete the more time consuming yet more accurate primary research. Some
problems I came across when using this kind of research was that I found out that most of my research was out
of date and therefore wrong, this meant that I had to re-complete my research in order to receive the accurate
results I needed. There were some positive points I came across when completing my research, for example it
was very easy to come across, therefore it was very quick to complete, this meant that I could start to
concentrate on complete various other parts of my project.
What research techniques did you use when completing the assignments in year 11 (Unit 18 Advertising and Unit
21 Media Project? (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises, plans etc)
When completing the assignments I was using the internet for most of the time if not all of the time, I used the
internet to watch videos of how to complete different tasks that were involved in my project, for example I was
watching videos that were telling me how to produce different types of photos that looked the best that they
could, these videos included the camera settings, the positions of the people that were in the shot, and the
location that the photo would be taken. This helped me a lot as I didn’t really know how to produce the photos
that I was hoping to produce so this really gave me an insight of how to do them in the best ways possible.
3. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
How did you collate, store and use the information trail for Units 18 and 21? (e.g. did you book mark key
websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?)
As I was mainly viewing videos on YouTube, I saved the links of the videos into a word document so I could view
them whenever I wanted to recap on certain subjects for my project. This was effective in speeding up the
process of completing my project because I knew where all the links where and didn’t have to waste time and
search for them over and over again.
How and why might you use the four research methods in a real life situation? For example if you worked for the
BBC and were tasked with creating a new reality TV show how might you use the four research methods to help?
PRIMARY RESEARCH:
I would use primary research to find out what time people watch TV during the day, this would help me to decide
what time would be best to air my TV show to gain the most viewers, therefore increasing popularity.
SECONDARY RESEARCH:
I would use secondary research to look into other existing and popular reality TV shows and try and find out how
that programme became so popular, this would help me to decide what my Reality TV programme would include
to obtain the best outcome.
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH:
I would use this kind of research to determine the most popular/well known TV channel, this will help me to
decide the best channel to air my programme, gain the most viewers and positive reviews.
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH:
I would use this kind of research to see what people would think my TV programme should be based on and what
should take place in it. This would help me gain popularity in my programme.
