1. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
• To find out if your target audience would buy your product
• To find out how much you could sell your product for
• To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
• To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Find definitions of the 4 research methods and give your opinions as to advantages/disadvantages for each one.
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
Primary Is the original
materials that have not been
edited/filtered or changed yet.
You hold proof of your pre
edited footage for say
Takes up a lot of memory and
is not always needed after
production and editing.
Secondary
Secondary Is the use of
discussion to produce a
product that is used sociably
or seen my million e.g. the
news
Easy to obtain and is often
used as a successful method
There are products that
produced with the same
information that are used
more often today.
Quantitative
Quantitative is the use of
questions to gather
information that aids your
business e.g. question airs
Gathers a lot of useful and
precise information on the
chosen topics that are needed.
People would rather not do
surveys unless offered or
forced
Qualitative
Qualitative Is used to gather
data about people and the
science behind their actions
and expressions.
Once you have discovered
what your test subject most
enjoys then the producers of a
product can pitch ideas that
best suit them.
Intrudes on personal
information and can be
considered immoral.
2. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
What research methods (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative) did you use when completing the
assignments in year 11 for Unit 9 (Photography Techniques) and Unit 18 (Advertising) ?
For both units I used secondary and qualitative research methods as they both gave good results for my research. I used the
secondary method when researching for unit 18 because when designing something that will be used for advertisement, you
need other peoples insights so you can modify your product, slogan, colour etc. to create a product that will look good on the
eye. I chose the quantitative method specially for unit 9 photography as photography is a more personal concept on how
artistically you want to perceive the image. So more personal and individual ideas are needed.
How did you collate, store and use the information when researching for your year 11 units?
(e.g. did you book mark key websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?)
I put most of my research either onto a word document or PowerPoint as this was the best way to organise all the usefull
photos and bullet points that I needed to create my work. I have a BTEC Media folder in my documents were there is
more folders inside labelling all the units needed. I also kept any handwritten or drawn sheets were kept in a folder in my
media room so I couldn’t lose it.
What research techniques (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises,
plans etc) did you use when completing the assignments in year 11 for Unit 9 (Photography Techniques) and Unit
18 (Advertising) ?
For my research I used the internet to look into photography techniques and what works well. There are hundreds of
websites that have the best information scattered throughout them so it takes a lot of time to search through all the
information until you find what is useful. I also watched videos and adverts to build up my research for unit 18 as the best
way to learn about advertising is to find which ones work well on you. I then did practises for both units to create more
depth in my knowledge about the two units.
If you didn’t use some of the methods in year 11, would use you them if you were to do your projects again?
How and why would you do this?
I think that If I had a project were I had to create a new concept for a hit TV show or film I would use the Qualitative
research method as this would give accurate ideas as to what your target audience would like to watch. It would also be
easier to create a highly popular TV show as if you do multiple researches you can find the results that come up most
often so you could choose an idea that will be liked and watched by the majority.
