Unit 1: P1, M1, D1 Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product? • To find out if your target audience would buy your product • To find out how much you could sell your product for • To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience • To find out how to market your product to your target audience Find definitions of the 4 research methods and give your opinions as to advantages/disadvantages for each one. Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage Primary Where you would go out and find the research yourself for your certain film or such this could be such as questionnaires and a phone survey to see what people need in a film. Gets specific information for your certain related target market and something related to what you are doing so it is a niche idea and not a broad one. It would take time to do and to complete when you could be going out and filming. Secondary Where you do internet research to find out about your certain idea. It is very quick and easy to do all you really need is to have a computer and access to internet. It can be broad view of what you are trying to do and also there can be things in the way of the website that can take you time such as surveys. Quantitative Is used for statistical analysis because it produces hard numbers. It is most often used for large scale surveys, like the census. It asks questions like, how, when, where, and how often. Easier to compile the data onto a chart or graph because of the numbers that are made available. The research can be conducted on a large scale and gives a lot more information as far as value and statistics. It is more costly than using qualitative research, is that numbers change often so that you would have to change the chart really often. Qualitative Instead of using surveys to compile and use different types of information, this type of research figures out how often something happens and why ,interviews, focus groups, reviews, and observations Easier to gain a better understanding of the target market because the types of questions that are asked during the research process begin with the word why. You can only gather the information that the small group gave to you and a safe assumption of the rest of the people will not be counted for.

I used Secondary research such as online sources and friends and family, If you didn’t use some of the methods in year 10, would use you them if you were to do your projects again? How and why would you do this? Yes I would use some primary research now and go out and ask the public what they want rather than the internet other Than just friends telling me that is good, I would probably use a survey.
