 A literature review discusses published information in a
particular subject area, and sometimes information in a
particular subject area within a certain time period.
 A literature review can be just a simple summary of the
sources, but it usually has an organizational pattern and
combines both summary and synthesis.

 A summary is a recap of the important information of the
source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling,
of that information.
 It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine
new with old interpretations.
 Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the field,
including major debates.
 And depending on the situation, the literature review may
evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most
pertinent or relevant.

 The format of a review of literature may vary from discipline
to discipline and from assignment to assignment.
 A review may be a self-contained unit -- an end in itself -- or
a preface to and rationale for engaging in primary research.
A review is a required part of grant and research proposals
and often a chapter in theses and dissertations.
 Generally, the purpose of a review is to analyze critically a
segment of a published body of knowledge through
summary, classification, and comparison of prior research
studies, reviews of literature, and theoretical articles.

 A literature review is the effective evaluation of selected
documents on a research topic.
 A review may form an essential part of the research
process or may constitute a research project in itself.
 In the context of a research paper or thesis the literature
review is a critical synthesis of previous research.
 The evaluation of the literature leads logically to the
research question.

Literature reviews provide you with a handy
guide to a particular topic. If you have limited
time to conduct research, literature reviews
can give you an overview or act as a stepping
stone.
Literature reviews also provide a solid
background for a research paper's
investigation. Comprehensive knowledge of
the literature of the field is essential to most
research papers.

For professionals, they are useful reports that
keep them up to date with what is current in
the field.
For scholars, the depth and breadth of the
literature review emphasizes the credibility of
the writer in his or her field

 The purpose of a literature review is for you to take a
critical look at the literature (facts and views) that already
exists in the area you are researching.
 A literature review is not a shopping list of everything that
exists, but a critical analysis that shows an evaluation of
the existing literature and a relationship between the
different works.
 It demonstrates the relevance of the research.

 Literature can include books, journal articles, internet (electronic
journals), newspapers, magazines, theses and dissertations,
conference proceedings, reports, and documentaries.
 Literature reviews are written occasionally in the humanities, but
mostly in the sciences and social sciences; in experiment and lab
reports, they constitute a section of the paper.
 Sometimes a literature review is written as a paper in itself.

 In the context of a research paper on a thesis, the literature review
provides a background to the study being proposed.
 The background may consider one or more of the following
aspects depending on the research question being posed:
 Theoretical background – past, present or future
 Clinical practice – previous or contemporary
 Methodology and/or research methods
 Previous findings
 Rationale and/or relevance of the current study

In a broader context Hart (1998) lists the
following purposes of a review:
 Distinguishing what has been done from what needs to be
done;
 Discovering important variables relevant to the topic;
 Synthesising and gaining a new perspective;
 Identifying relationships between ideas and practice;
 Establishing the context of the topic or problem;

Rationalizing the significance of the problem;
Enhancing and acquiring the subject vocabulary;
Understanding the structure of the subject;
Relating ideas and theory to applications;
Identifying methodologies and techniques that
have been used;
Placing the research in a historical context to
show familiarity with state-of-the-art
developments.

 Its purpose is to:
Place each work in the context of its contribution to the
understanding of the subject under review
Describe the relationship of each work to the others under
consideration
Identify new ways to interpret, and shed light on any gaps in,
previous research
Resolve conflicts amongst seemingly contradictory previous
studies
Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort
Point the way forward for further research
Place one's original work (in the case of theses or dissertations)
in the context of existing literature

 Show that the researcher is aware of existing
work in the chosen topic / area.
 Place the researcher’s work in the context of
what has already been published.
 Point to strengths, weaknesses, omissions or
bias in the previous work.
 Identify key issues or crucial questions that
are troubling the research community.
 Point to gaps that have not previously been
identified or addressed by researchers.
 Identify theories that the researcher will test
or explore by gathering data from the field.
 Suggest theories that might explain data the
researcher has gathered from the field.
 Identify theories, genres, methods or
algorithms that will be incorporated in the
development of a computer application.
 Identify research methods or strategies that
the researcher will use in the research.
 Enable subsequent researchers to understand
the field and the researcher’s work within
that field.
 Textbooks -Introductory source
 Explain a field and main approaches within

 May get outdated.
 Manuals -valuable source of information,
particularly for design and creation projects
where you will often need to use the relevant
technical manuals to use particular software
packages or computer systems.
 However, useful as they are, they are not
refereed academic works giving insight into
current thinking in the field.
 They are not often cited in a literature review.
 Academic journal articles gives information on
your area with latest updates in the field.
 Your final literature review will probably contain
mostly journal articles.
 They can be difficult to read at first, so you
might find it best to gain an understanding of
the area through books before exploring journal
articles for the latest developments.
 Also useful when you first start are journal
articles that are themselves a survey of the
literature on a particular topic.
 journals containing refereed articles are rated
more highly than those with non-refereed
articles.
 ‘Refereed’ means that articles have been
‘peer reviewed’: academics unknown to an
article’s authors assess its suitability and
quality before a decision is taken on whether
to publish it in the journal.

 The researchers will present their work
initially via a paper at a conference or
workshop before writing and submitting a
more detailed journal article.

 Standard / quality of the conference
 Getting the copies of published paper is difficult.
 This includes market research reports.
 These reports may be conducted by
government agency or any organization.
 Not easily available. Need to buy.
 Use the reports cautiously.

 Newspapers, magazines and broadcast
programmes can be a valuable resource for
up-to-date information.
 FinancialTimes orWall Street Journal, the
Economist orTime magazines, and the BBC
or CNN.
 Those researching into computers and art find art
exhibitor. catalogues useful. Here artists often offer
personal statements or essays on their aims and their
artistic process.
 Such catalogues often also contain critical reviews by
art critics, who analyse the work and place it in a
broader historical context.
 such essays are not peer reviewed as in most
academic research — they reflect the personal,
subjective views of the artist or art critic.

articles and papers that have been published
or presented at conferences.
 Your library might probably subscribe to a
number of them.

 We can break a literature review down into
seven different activities,
 searching,
 obtaining,
 assessing,
 reading,
 critically evaluating and writing a critical review.

 walk along the shelves in your university
library
 use a catalogue, an online database or a
search engine.
 Define some key words or search terms and
then use them methodically to produce a list
of potentially useful references.
 Need to obtain the potentially useful
resources.
 If present in your library..find the location and
grab it.
 Inter-library connections
 Use search engines for further research
 Don’t go for face value of the book
 Is the author someone eminent in the field?
 Have you heard of the publisher before?
 Is the publisher a university press (for example, Oxford
University Press)?
 This might reassure you about the academic quality of the
work.
 Is the book in a second or subsequent edition, or has it been
reprinted?
 You can find this out from the page that gives the publishing
date, usually between the title and contents pages. If there has
been more than one edition or reprint,
 This suggests that there has been a high demand for the book,
implying others think it has something worthwhile to say.
 For journal article,
 Is it aimed at academics or practitioners?
 How long has the journal existed? You can tell this by
looking at the volume number: the higher it is, the
longer the journal has existed.
 One that has existed for a long time is likely to have
established itself as a respectable journal.
 However, the converse is not true. IS and computing
are rapidly evolving fields, so new journals appear
regularly. It is not valid to infer that a journal that has
not existed for long cannot be a respectable source.
 Does the journal provide a list of its editorial
board and advisors, and do these people
seem to be of high standing? If they are, then
the journal is probably an acceptable
resource.
 Does the journal state clearly its policy for
reviewing articles?Are all articles peer
reviewed, some, or none at all?
 You should concentrate on those articles that
are peer reviewed.
 For conferences and workshops, you need to ask:
 Is it an academic conference or one aimed solely at
practitioners?
 Is the conference/workshop well established? As with
journals, conferences that have been held annually for
many years are likely to be respected, but the converse
 is not necessarily true.
 Does the conference/workshop give details of its
programme committee? Do they appear to be scholars of
high standing?
 Does it make clear its reviewing policy, or were all papers
accepted for presentation:
 Internet Resources:
 Does the site make clear who owns it and
provide contact details if you want tc
 query something?
 Does it seem to be authoritative, for example,
one owned by a university or government rather
than a private individual?
 Does it make clear its purpose, including any
disclaimers?
 Does it show when it was last updated? Is it up-
to-date?
 Reading for academic purpose is different
from reading in leisure.
 Look for abstract, conclusion, references etc.
 Critical evaluation of reference material for
its relevance to your research.
 Need to find out the flaws or omission.
 Disagreement in some context
 Is the literature unbiased?
 All researchers eventually realize they must
devise a system to keep track of the material
they are reading and evaluating.
 a brief summary of the content — to act as an
aid to your memory;
 A brief summary of your evaluation — again to
aid your memory;
 Bibliographic details of literature source, so that
you, your examiners and anyone else who reads
your paper or thesis can find the text again
 Need to write the literature review
 This might be one chapter in your thesis
 Literature review is : gathering and presenting
evidence to support your claim that you have
created some new knowledge, specifically that:
 The topic is worthwhile;
 The research does not merely repeat the work of
others (or if it does, there is a deliberate reason for
this);
 You have created some new knowledge that was not
known before.
 Focused -The topic should be narrow.You should only present ideas and
only report on studies that are closely related to topic.
 Concise - Ideas should be presented economically. Don’t take any more
space than you need to present your ideas.
 Logical -The flow within and among paragraphs should be a smooth,
logical progression from one idea to the next
 Developed - Don’t leave the story half told.
 Integrative -Your paper should stress how the ideas in the studies are
related. Focus on the big picture. What commonality do all the studies
share? How are some studies different than others? Your paper should
stress how all the studies reviewed contribute to your topic.
 Current -Your review should focus on work being done on the cutting
edge of your topic.

 plagiansm means that you have used
someone else’s words or ideas without giving
them credit.
 It is a serious offense, and if found guilty of it
research students will probably be failed.
 A good test for whether you are in danger of
plagiarizing another author’s words is
whether you are able to write your discussion
of a paper without having to refer frequently
to the author’s original.

  • 4.  A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, and sometimes information in a particular subject area within a certain time period.  A literature review can be just a simple summary of the sources, but it usually has an organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis.   • 5.  A summary is a recap of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling, of that information.  It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with old interpretations.  Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the field, including major debates.  And depending on the situation, the literature review may evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most pertinent or relevant.   • 6.  The format of a review of literature may vary from discipline to discipline and from assignment to assignment.  A review may be a self-contained unit -- an end in itself -- or a preface to and rationale for engaging in primary research. A review is a required part of grant and research proposals and often a chapter in theses and dissertations.  Generally, the purpose of a review is to analyze critically a segment of a published body of knowledge through summary, classification, and comparison of prior research studies, reviews of literature, and theoretical articles.   • 7.  A literature review is the effective evaluation of selected documents on a research topic.  A review may form an essential part of the research process or may constitute a research project in itself.  In the context of a research paper or thesis the literature review is a critical synthesis of previous research.  The evaluation of the literature leads logically to the research question.   • 11.  The purpose of a literature review is for you to take a critical look at the literature (facts and views) that already exists in the area you are researching.  A literature review is not a shopping list of everything that exists, but a critical analysis that shows an evaluation of the existing literature and a relationship between the different works.  It demonstrates the relevance of the research.   • 12.  Literature can include books, journal articles, internet (electronic journals), newspapers, magazines, theses and dissertations, conference proceedings, reports, and documentaries.  Literature reviews are written occasionally in the humanities, but mostly in the sciences and social sciences; in experiment and lab reports, they constitute a section of the paper.  Sometimes a literature review is written as a paper in itself.   • 17.  Show that the researcher is aware of existing work in the chosen topic / area.  Place the researcher’s work in the context of what has already been published.  Point to strengths, weaknesses, omissions or bias in the previous work.
  • 18.  Identify key issues or crucial questions that are troubling the research community.  Point to gaps that have not previously been identified or addressed by researchers.  Identify theories that the researcher will test or explore by gathering data from the field.  Suggest theories that might explain data the researcher has gathered from the field.
  • 19.  Identify theories, genres, methods or algorithms that will be incorporated in the development of a computer application.  Identify research methods or strategies that the researcher will use in the research.  Enable subsequent researchers to understand the field and the researcher’s work within that field.

Here artists often offer personal statements or essays on their aims and their artistic process.  Such catalogues often also contain critical reviews by art critics, who analyse the work and place it in a broader historical context.  such essays are not peer reviewed as in most academic research — they reflect the personal, subjective views of the artist or art critic.

  • 36.  Don’t go for face value of the book  Is the author someone eminent in the field?  Have you heard of the publisher before?  Is the publisher a university press (for example, Oxford University Press)?  This might reassure you about the academic quality of the work.  Is the book in a second or subsequent edition, or has it been reprinted?  You can find this out from the page that gives the publishing date, usually between the title and contents pages. If there has been more than one edition or reprint,  This suggests that there has been a high demand for the book, implying others think it has something worthwhile to say.
  • 37.  For journal article,  Is it aimed at academics or practitioners?  How long has the journal existed? You can tell this by looking at the volume number: the higher it is, the longer the journal has existed.  One that has existed for a long time is likely to have established itself as a respectable journal.  However, the converse is not true. IS and computing are rapidly evolving fields, so new journals appear regularly. It is not valid to infer that a journal that has not existed for long cannot be a respectable source.
  • 38.  Does the journal provide a list of its editorial board and advisors, and do these people seem to be of high standing? If they are, then the journal is probably an acceptable resource.  Does the journal state clearly its policy for reviewing articles?Are all articles peer reviewed, some, or none at all?  You should concentrate on those articles that are peer reviewed.
  • 39.  For conferences and workshops, you need to ask:  Is it an academic conference or one aimed solely at practitioners?  Is the conference/workshop well established? As with journals, conferences that have been held annually for many years are likely to be respected, but the converse  is not necessarily true.  Does the conference/workshop give details of its programme committee? Do they appear to be scholars of high standing?  Does it make clear its reviewing policy, or were all papers accepted for presentation:
  • 40.  Internet Resources:  Does the site make clear who owns it and provide contact details if you want tc  query something?  Does it seem to be authoritative, for example, one owned by a university or government rather than a private individual?  Does it make clear its purpose, including any disclaimers?  Does it show when it was last updated? Is it up- to-date?
  • 41.  Reading for academic purpose is different from reading in leisure.  Look for abstract, conclusion, references etc.

  • 46.  Focused -The topic should be narrow.You should only present ideas and only report on studies that are closely related to topic.  Concise - Ideas should be presented economically. Don’t take any more space than you need to present your ideas.  Logical -The flow within and among paragraphs should be a smooth, logical progression from one idea to the next  Developed - Don’t leave the story half told.  Integrative -Your paper should stress how the ideas in the studies are related. Focus on the big picture. What commonality do all the studies share? How are some studies different than others? Your paper should stress how all the studies reviewed contribute to your topic.  Current -Your review should focus on work being done on the cutting edge of your topic. 46
  • 47.  plagiansm means that you have used someone else’s words or ideas without giving them credit.  It is a serious offense, and if found guilty of it research students will probably be failed.  A good test for whether you are in danger of plagiarizing another author’s words is whether you are able to write your discussion of a paper without having to refer frequently to the author’s original.
