How does our media piece represent different social groups?
The main character of our sequence is played by Sonny Southwell, he was the only character
in the sequence apart from the zombie. He is 17 years old, and is represented as capable of
looking after himself but also he is not officially an adult, so he could be seen as not fully
responsible. His costume was a pair of green jeans and a black coat with trainers, which is a
typical outfit for a teenager to wear.
The target audience of our sequence is 15-35, the main character’s age helps our sequence
because they can relate to him. In the survey I conducted, I found if the main character of a
film was close to the age of the audience they found they could relate to the character
better. This means they can form a relationship and feel more involved with the plot and
therefore hopefully will enjoy it more.
The character is male and from the survey conducted, over half of the respondents
answered that most horror films have a male main character, which shows our film has
conformed to typical horror conventions. However, I also found that it would not matter
what gender the main character was because the results of the survey shows it does not
make a difference of their opinion of the film overall.
Sonny is white British, the ethnicity of a character would not make a difference to whether
people would watch the film, this was found by the survey I constructed:
We didn’t think that the class of the character would make a difference to people’s opinions
of the film so we did not take it into consideration. The character lives in a middle class area,
which means people from similar backgrounds can relate to him more.
